- It is, and you're not going
to get it till tomorrow.

- Where are you boys going?

- Over to Pete's house
to play some records.

Then we're going to a show.

Hey, Pop, would you time

it takes me to get downstairs?
- Oh, yes.

- Now, what's the idea of that?

- I'm just trying to find out
if it has a sweep second hand.

Come up with me, Pete?

- Well, no thanks.

I think I'll stay down here
and take a look at your watch.

- Holy smokes, the watch was
supposed to be a surprise.

- Does it have a
luminous dial, Pop?

- Go on upstairs
and get your record,

or whatever you're going to do.

- I'll be right down, Pete.

- Uh, can I speak
to you for a minute,

Mr. Nelson, Mrs. Nelson?

- Sure, what's on your mind?

- Well, I was talking
to some of the fellas,

and we'd like to give Ricky a
surprise party tomorrow night.

- Oh, well, gee, that sounds
like a wonderful idea.

Don't you think so?

- Well, it might
not be easy, though.

It'd take some pretty
careful planning.

- Well, I thought maybe
Dave could take him bowling,

and I could run
into him over there

accidentally and then invite
him to my house for supper.

- Yeah, that ought to
keep him out of the way

until things get organized.

- Well, I was going to
bake a small birthday cake,

but I can bake a big
one just as easily.

- That'd be swell.
- Shh.

- Well, does it have
a luminous dial?

- Uh, Rick, we've
been thinking this

over, and as long as
you know what you're

going to get anyway, here.

- Oh, gee, thanks, Pop!

- Oh, I've got that right here.

I'll give that to you tomorrow.

- Anybody home?

- Oh, hi, Sally.
Come on in.

- I just stopped by to see
if you wanted to go downtown

with me, Harriet.
- Oh, I'm sorry.

I can't right now.

We're planning a party
for Ricky tomorrow night,

and I'm trying to get
the thing organized.

- Oh, what's the occasion?

- His birthday.

- I just thought I'd ask.

You know, kids are getting
engaged so young nowadays.

- No, it's his 17th birthday.

- That has a wonderful
sound to it, doesn't it?

- It sure does.

- Sure does.

- It's a little
frightening, too,

when you consider this
is your younger son.

Would you stay and have
a cup of tea with us?

- No thanks, Harriet.
I don't have time.

You go ahead with
what you're doing.

- Oh, I was just
trying to figure out

what I was going to need for
the party tomorrow night.

- Say, speaking of
the party, there's

a wonderful place
downtown that specializes

in birthday parties.

They bring all the
food and the favors.

They even clean up afterwards.

You don't have to do a thing.

- Hey, that sounds
like a real good idea.

- They did a terrific job
at my little niece's party.

If you want me to, I
can stop by and arrange

the whole thing for you.

I'm going downtown anyway.

- Oh, well, that'd be fine,
if you're sure you don't mind.

- Oh, no, I'd love to do it.

I got to know the
woman real well.

They take care of everything.

You can just enjoy yourself.

- Of course, I'm afraid I'm
going to feel kind of useless.

- Oh, well, don't

I felt the same way

- Well, it's a little

- You still haven't
given it the acid test.

- What's that?

- Well, tonight when
you're taking your bath,

let some water run
in the bathtub,

and then turn out the lights
and drop your watch in the tub

and see if it lights
up under water.

Ozzie, when's Dave going to
take him to the bowling alley?

- Well, gee, I don't know.
- I hope it's pretty soon.

I've got to change.

- Oh, no, you look fine.

I can't budge Ricky.

He's waiting for dinner.

He thinks we're
going to eat here.

And it's pretty dark up here.

- We're leaving now, dear!

I'm sorry we can't
go bowling with you.

- Oh, that's OK.

Where are you going?

- Uh, we're just
going out for a while.

- When are they going to leave?

I'm freezing.

- Here they come out
of the driveway now.

hour, I imagine.

boys are coming back!

- They're my bowling shoes.

- All right, I'm getting them!

I'm Mrs. Neely from
the party service.

I parked my truck
in the driveway.

Would you like me to drive
it around in the back

and unload it?

- Oh, yes, that'd be fine.

- Did Mr. Johnson get here?

- Yes, he's upstairs changing.

myself into a sad clown.

But I think you'll find
that most children prefer

a happy clown, especially
at birthday parties.

- You see what I mean?

A happy clown will
get them every time.

- Kathleen, will you please put
these up in the living room?

- Certainly.

- [laughs]

The kiddies just love him.

And then we have the puppets
and the Punch and Judy show.

but this is Ricky 17th birthday.

Don't you think he's a little
too old for puppets and clowns?

- Do you really think so?

Why, I think everybody
loves clowns.

- Oh, well, uh,

wouldn't want Ricky
to be embarrassed

in front of his friends.

Oh, I'm sorry, Mr Johnson.

- The tear gag always gets them.

We've been calling
your house all night.

- Just a second, Oz!

Can you turn the
phonograph down a little?

- What's going on
over there, Doc?

- What do you mean
what's going on here?

It's Ricky's surprise party.

Too bad you weren't here, Oz.

He sure was surprised.

- Wait a minute.

You mean the surprise party
is over at your house?

- Yeah.

We should have held
it at your house.

Boy, what a racket!

- What's the matter?

- There's been a
misunderstanding.

The party's at Doc's house.

- At Doc's house?

- Well, we thought it was
going to be here, Doc.

We've got everything here--
food, a cake, ice cream,

a clown, puppets, decorations.

- A clown?

- Yeah, the party
service misunder--

See, well, uh, they've got
us all prepared for a kiddies

party here.

- Kiddies party?

Well, hey, how about
inviting us over?

- Well, sure.

Hey, look, why don't you round
up the whole gang, you know,

the Randolphs and the Darbys?

- Yeah, and the Van Skylers.

I just talked to
Van on the phone.

- Well, gee, that'd be swell.

Hey, wait a minute.

Uh, who's going to chaperone
the kids over there?

- Oh, that's easy, Oz.

My wife's mother's here, and
she doesn't hear very well.

In fact, I think
she's enjoying it.

- Well, look, Doc, you round
up the gang and tell them

there's a big party
going on at the Nelson's.

We'll see in a
little while then.

Well, it's all set.

- Well, if your friends are
coming over, you won't need me.

- Oh, sure, you
folks are invited.

Wouldn't you like to stay?

- In this?

- Hey, here's an idea.

Do you mind if I borrow
the clown outfit?

- Well, not at all.

- Well, I just thought
I'd kind of surprise them.

Hey, we'll have a surprise
party over here after all.

- I love surprise parties.

- Oh, you look just
wonderful, dear.

- I think it'll add a little
gaiety and color to the party,

thanks to Mr. Johnson here.

- Mr. Nelson's a natural clown.

Oh, I mean that as a
compliment, Mr. Nelson.

- [chuckles] Harriet, I'll
wait at the top of the stairs.

And when everybody's here,
just give me a signal,

and I'll pop out
and surprise them.

- OK.

Oh, I think I hear a car.

- Don't tell anybody, now.

I want to surprise them.

- Hey, get back up the stairs.

They're coming up the walk.

- I just got a better idea.

I'll stand right here.

When you yank the door
open, I'll yell, "Surprise!"

Wait till you see the
looks on their faces.

- Hello, lady!

Is this where the
kiddies party is?

- Oh, Doc!

- I want a lollipop!

If I don't get one, I'll scream!

- Hi, Harriet.

- Oh, it's just wonderful.

- What a bunch of hams.
