- I'm glad to hear that, Oz.

Say, the reason I stopped
over is my wife tells me you

and Harriet are going
to dance tomorrow night.

I thought maybe we
could go over together.

- Yeah, sounds great.

Frankly, I'll be glad when
the darn dance is over.

Harriet's on the decorating
committee, you know?

She's been over there at the
Women's Club every afternoon

this week.

In fact, she's not home yet.

- Who says I'm not?

- Oh.
[laughs]

- Hi, Harriet.
Hello, dear.

- Hi, Doc.

- Doc was just saying he
and Shirley are going over

to the dance tomorrow night,
and they thought we might all

go over there together.

- Well, it sounds
like a wonderful idea.

- Fine.

- The way the tickets are
going, it looks like a sellout.

- Well, that's good.

I imagine a lot of the
kids will be there, too.

You know, with Tommy
Jackson's band.

- Oh, yeah.
It's a wonderful orchestra.

They've got some great
records out, too, you know.

- So I understand.

Well, we'll pick you up
tomorrow night about 9:00, OK?

- OK.

- Oh, hi, boys.
- We aren't late, are we, Mom?

- Oh, no, dear.
I just got home myself.

I was down at the Women's Club
helping with the decorations.

- Well, see you tomorrow night.
- OK, Doc.

- OK, Doc.

- Glad you stopped by.

- Gee, nearly
everybody I talked to

is going to the
dance tomorrow night.

- Well, that's good.

The committee's
worked real hard.

- We stopped off
at the record shop

and got some Tommy
Jackson records.

- Oh, I understand he's got
some real good ones out.

- Yeah, he sure has.

Hey, Mom, will you give me
a yell when dinner's ready?

I'll be up in my room.
I want to play these records.

- Oh, Rick, why don't you
play them here in the den?

We've got a good player.

- Well, I kind of like to play
along with them on my drums.

Who knows?

The drummer might get
sick tomorrow night.

- Heh-- well, now, that's
a fine thing to say.

- Oh, I don't mean
anything serious.

I just mean temporarily
indisposed, just

long enough for me to sit
in for a couple numbers.

- Close the windows now.

We don't want to blast the
neighbors off the block.

- You know, Harriet, that's
not as far-fetched as you might

think, about the
drummer taken sick.

I remember one time when our
band was playing a one-night

stand-- it was a pretty
important dance, too--

and our first trumpet
player was taken sick.

And the kids from
the local high school

sat in and did a great job.

- Well, Rick's really been
playing the drums pretty good,

Pop.
Have you heard him recently?

I mean, with the door open?

- Well, no, but he
seeps through the wall

well enough for me
to get the message.

- There he goes.

Tommy Jackson with Ricky

[music playing, loud drumming]

- You know, Dave's right.

He whips up a pretty
good storm there.

[music playing]

- I must say, Harriet, you girls
on the decorating committee

have certainly done
a wonderful job.

- Oh, thanks a lot, Junie.

Everybody pitched
in so willingly,

it was really a lot of fun.

Say, I wonder if the
flowers have come yet.

- Do you want me to
check on it, Harriet?

- Yeah, thanks a lot, Shirley.
- Mrs. Nelson?

- Yes, Tony?

- Mrs. Rogers was
looking for you.

I just heard her
talking to the manager

of Tommy Jackson's band.

Somebody got sick or
something, and they want

Ricky to play drums tonight.

- Oh.

- Yeah, Mrs. Rogers said
they'd better ask you first.

- Oh, well, thanks a lot, Tony.

- Harriet?

- Oh, hi, Sally.

- I want you to meet Mr. Martin,
the manager of Tommy Jackson's

band.
This is Mrs. Nelson.

- How do you do?
- How do you do, Mrs. Nelson?

- I just got the news
by special messenger,

and I know Ricky's going
to be thrilled to death.

- Oh, that's fine.

- When Mr. Martin said he
needed somebody for the drums,

naturally, I thought
of Ricky right away.

- Well, I hope the regular
man isn't seriously ill.

- Oh, no, he's not sick at all.

He just went home to visit his
folks for a couple of days.

- Oh, that's good.

Well, I hope Ricky
does all right.

He's only 16, you know.

- No, I'm sure he'll do fine.

- Is there any special way
you want him to be dressed?

- Oh, no, just whatever
he wants to wear.

- And what time do you
want him to be here?

- Well, the band's coming in
by a special bus about 7:30.

If he could be here by
then, that'll be fine.

- OK, I'll tell him.

I know he'll be
thrilled to death.

He's just crazy about music.

In fact, he has nearly all
of Tommy Jackson's records.

- Well, good for him.

Mrs. Rogers tells me you
have practically a sellout

for tonight.
We're sure glad to hear that.

- Well, thank you.
So are we.

Well, I'll see you both later.

I can't wait to get home
and tell Rick the news.

- Bye.

[music playing]

- I can't believe it.

Imagine me playing with
Tommy Jackson's orchestra.

- Oh, quiet down, Rick, will
you, and eat your dinner.

You haven't touched a thing.

- Gee, who can eat at
a time like this, Pop?

- You'd better get started.

You're due there at 7:30.

- Lucky you've been
practicing with those records.

- Yeah, at least I'll
be familiar with some

of the library.

- Don't try to do too
much tonight, Rick.

The important thing is just
keep a good, steady beat.

- Oh, I will.

- Oh, and don't play
the bass drum too loud.

If there's anything that
makes a band sound soggy,

it's a heavy foot
on the bass drum.

- I know that, Pop.

- See, listen for the
notes on the string bass.

If you can't hear
those, then you

know you're playing too loud.

- Well, I wouldn't make
too many suggestions, dear.

Maybe a lot of things that have
changed since you had a band.

- Well, sure, but the
basic principles of dance

music never change.

- What's he supposed to wear?

- Well, a tuxedo,
I guess, isn't he?

- Well, Mr. Martin
didn't say so.

He said for him to wear
whatever he wanted.

- Well, he probably figured
he didn't have a tuxedo,

and didn't want
to embarrass him.

- Well, not many bands
wear tuxedos anymore, Pop.

- Well, maybe not
the local bands.

But the name bands
do, don't they?

- Oh, I'm not sure.

- You know, I wish I had a
suit with big, broad shoulders

and a long coat.

- You mean a zoot suit?

- Oh, they don't call
them that anymore, Pop.

I'm sure those guys will
be dressed pretty sharp.

- Look, the important
thing, son, is to play well.

- I know, but this is
a pretty hip outfit.

I don't want those big cats
to start laughing at me

when I walk in.

- [chuckles]

- I'm sure they'll be
very nice to you, dear.

- Besides, jazz men don't
wear those mad suits anymore.

They wear those
three-button suits

with no padding
in the shoulders.

- Come on, dear,
finish your dinner.

- Oh, OK.

I wish they'd let me
know about a week ago.

I could have grown a mustache,
or sideburns, at least.

- Rick, this is a modern dance
band, not a hillbilly outfit.

- You can wear my tuxedo
if you want, Rick.

- Yeah, that sounds
like a good idea.

- The dance isn't
formal, you know.

- Well, I know, but
the band will probably

be wearing tuxedos
or band uniforms.

- At least a tuxedo
will make me look older.

What time is it, Mom?

- About a quarter to seven.

You'd better hurry.

- Gee, I really don't
think I can eat any more.

I'm too excited.

- Me, either.

I'll help you get the tuxedo on.

- Yeah, I think I'll make
a couple of phone calls.

- OK, dear.

It's a lucky thing this
doesn't happen every night.

We'd all starve to death.

- Little guy playing drums
with Tommy Jackson's band.

- Yeah, I hope he
doesn't get nervous.

- Oh, don't worry about him.

He'll be solid as a rock.

You and Shirley are going to

Well, I got some news for you.

Yeah, listen to this--

Ricky's going to play drums with
Tommy Jackson's band tonight.

[laughs] I don't
know what happened.

The band manager spoke
to Harriet about it.

That's a wonderful
break, isn't it?

looks kind of familiar,
don't be surprised.

It's Ricky.

That's right.

Oh, that sure is.

Well, he's a good kid.

Yeah.

- I believe the

that is, for a kid his age.

How's everything?

Say, I've got some interesting
news to tell you about Ricky.

You know, our younger son.

- I wonder if I'm supposed to
take my drums down there or use

the other guy's.

- Didn't Mom say?

- She didn't say
much about anything,

just that I was supposed
to be down there at 7:30.

- Well, I'm sure they'll
have drums down there.

They usually have a band
truck and a guy that sets up

the instruments and stuff.

- Come on, dear,
it's after 7:00.

- Hey, Mom, would you
tie this tie for me?

- What's the matter?

Don't you like the
way I'm doing it?

- Well, you're choking me.

- Come on, let me handle this.

- Hello, Tom?

This is Ozzie Nelson.

Ozzie Nelson.

You probably don't remember me.

We went to high school together.

- Well, here goes nothing.

- Let me take a look at you.

Oh, you look fine.

- I hope I don't get nervous.

- Oh, you'll be fine.

Don't worry about a thing.

You just get up there
behind those drums,

lean back, close your eyes,
get right on the groove

there, give it a
good, steady beat.

Just make believe
you're up in your room,

playing with the record.

Oh, you got plenty
of gum with you?

- I'm going to drop him off
and then pick up my date.

- I just talked
to long distance,

and we can't seem to reach Mrs.

Shall we keep trying?

- Well, no, thank you.

Just cancel the call, please.

- All right, sir.

And tell Ricky we all wish him
good luck on the drums tonight.

- Well, how are you?
- All right.

Well, you got here
a little early.

- Yeah, we had the wind with us.

We're due on the
bandstand at 8:30.

- How's it look for tonight?
- Terrific.

They're real nice people,
and the place is sold out.

- Good.

Did Jocko get here with
the instruments yet?

- Yeah, the band truck's
right over there.

But I gave Jocko the night off.

He's got some relatives
around here someplace.

- Don't tell me I got to carry
my own drums in and set 'em up!

- Yeah, and how about the
instruments and the music

stands and stuff?

- Hey, will you stop
squawking, you guys?

I got a kid to
take care of that--

kid named Ricky Nelson.

He'll be here at 7:30.

- Hey, listen to that applause.

- Sounds wonderful.

- Boy, what a band!

- Sure sounds great, doesn't it?

- Listen to those drums!

That kid sounds
like a professional.

- Not so loud, dear.
You'll embarrass all of us.

- Well, it's right,
though, Harriet.

Listen to that beat.

- Boy, what a crowd.

Hey, wait a minute--

Where's Rick?

- Well, I don't know.

- Maybe he's just
sitting out this number.

- Oh, there he is, over
there with the guitar player.

- Why's he doing that?

Rick?

- Oh, hiya, Pop.

- What happened, son?

- I guess there was a
little misunderstanding.

They didn't need
a drummer tonight.

What they wanted was a
guy to carry the drums.

- Well, you mean a band boy?

- Yeah, I thought it
was too good to be true.

Don't say anything though, Pop.

I don't want to
embarrass anybody.

It's hard enough explaining
why I was wearing this tuxedo.

- Harriet, how could
you get things so--

[chuckles] I'm supposed
to be the guy who

gets things mixed up.

Gee, this is a shame.

- Well, that's OK, Pop.

They're real nice guys.

At least I got to meet 'em all.

Oh, pardon me, I got to
get 'em some more Cokes.

That's part of my job.

- Oh, hi, Mom, Pop.

- Oh, hi, Dave.

- Oh, hi, Dave.

- I see you found
out about Rick.

- Yeah, how about that?

- Oh, you know
Virginia, don't you?

- [BOTH] Oh, hello, Virginia.

- Evidently, there was
a misunderstanding.

They just wanted him to carry
the drums in and set 'em up.

- Awful, isn't it?

- Well, Ricky didn't
seem too upset about it.

- What's he going
to do, the poor kid?

- Well, we can't just stand
around here with sour faces

all night.
He's being brave about it.

We might as well
make the best of it.

- Well, we'll see you later.
- OK.

- Sure is a great
band, isn't it?

- Yeah, terrific.

They got a wonderful beat.

- Sure, that guy's one of the
best drummers in the world.

- Why don't you ask him to

- Oh, I couldn't do that.

It would be too
embarrassing with Mom

and the committee and all.

- Well, big name bands let
guys sit in, don't they?

- Oh, no, only in
case of emergency--

somebody's taken
sick or something.

- Yeah.

- Ladies and gentlemen, may I
have your attention, please?

Would Ricky Nelson please
come to the bandstand?

- Poor kid, they probably want
him to lug some more Cokes up

on the bandstand.

- Our drummer's been
taken sick, and we'd

like Ricky to sit in with us.

- Well, how about that?

- Hey, Rick, they're
looking for you.

- Yeah, I just heard!
- Good luck, Dear.

- Here I am, Tommy.

- Go get 'em, Rick.

- Did you hear the
wonderful news?

The drummer has been taken sick!

- What a terrible thing to say!

Isn't that great?

- The drummer isn't

- No, the band manager just
took him out to the bus.

He says he thinks he'll
be all right if he just

rests for a little while.

- Here he goes.

- Well, he's busy.

- That's-- but that's

- Say, pardon me, fellas.
I'm Dr. Williams.

They just announced your
drummer was taken sick.

I wonder if I could
be of any help.

- Well, thanks a lot, Doc.

I'm the drummer, but
I'm really not sick.

At least I wasn't
until I started

playing gin with this card
shark here masquerading

as a band manager.

- Don't listen to him.

He's a sore loser.

I'll tell you what happened.

We just got word
that the kid who's

been acting as band
boy for us tonight

thought he was
hired to play drums.

So Tommy suggested that Al
here get a convenient headache

or something.
- Oh.

Well, that's darn
nice of you fellas.

How did you find
out about Ricky?

- Some other kid standing
by the bandstand told us.

He said this Ricky's
a terrific drummer.

- Oh, yeah, he is.

Oh, say, wait a minute--

This other kid,
was his name Dave?

- Yeah, that's right.

He says he's known
Ricky all his life.

- Yeah, sure has.

Well, I'll see
you later, fellas.

- Thanks a lot, Doc.

- Hey, and don't say
anything, will you, Doc?

With these cards I'm getting,
it may take me quite a while

to get well again.

- That was swell, Rick.

- Oh, thanks.

- Yeah, that was

- Oh, I'm sure he's fine.

- Hey, I'd like you to

- And my brother, Dave.

- Oh, Dave is your brother?

- Yes, have you met before?

- Well, yes.

We were just talking
about a few things.

I met your dad before,
too, years ago,

but he doesn't remember it.

- Oh, really?
- That's right.

Maybe you'll remember
the incident?

You and your band were playing
a one-nighter in Indiana,

and your trumpet
player was taken sick.

I was in high school at the
time, just like Ricky here.

You gave me my first chance
to sit in with a big band.

- Oh.

Gee, of course I remember.

It's nice to see you again.

- It's taken me a long
time to return the favor.

But I'm sure glad I
had a chance tonight.

- Well, thanks a lot.

So am I.

- Pop's still got
his card, if you've

got a spare saxophone around.

- Great!

- [laughs] I'm afraid I'm a
little rusty on the saxophone.

- Well, we can't
let the night go

by without some sort of a
number from the Nelson family.

- Oh, well, I tell
you what, Tommy,

I see your drummer's
back on the bandstand.

How about Rick singing
a rhythm and blues tune,

and the rest of us will give
him a little moral support?

- Good deal.
What do you want to sing, Rick?

- Fine, I'll make
the announcement.

- Do you think it's all
right for him to sing, too?

- Oh, sure.

It's great experience for him.

Hey, remember that harmony we
were working out on "My Gal

Sal" the other night?

- Oh, no, forget it.

You're not going to get
me up there to sing.

- Of course, if
they insist on it,

there's nothing much
we can do about it.
