and spread some newspapers down

on the floor so you don't
get paint on the rug.

- OK, Mom.

- Come on, Picasso.

- Harriet, I don't think
you should have said that.

- Well, you told
David to be sure

and spread newspapers

Let him get paint

- Well, no, but if you
keep criticizing a kid,

he never develops
any self-confidence.

You're forgetting
your Dr. Spock.

boys are a little

old for that kind of stuff?

- Well, age has
nothing to do with it.

Everybody needs lots
of encouragement

and as little
criticism as possible.

Is this the same
coffee we always have?

- Yes, is there

- No, it just tasted a
little peculiar tonight.

- Well, I didn't
notice anything.

- See, I think we should
limit our criticism to times

when the boys actually
do something wrong.

- I do, too.

- All I did was suggest he put
some newspapers on the floor.

That's an implied criticism,
the kind of stuff that

destroys a person's confidence.

It's funny, though, how you
can always tell canned peas.

- Those are fresh.

- You see, this is what I mean.

You're looking at me
with a critical look

just because I made
a simple statement.

That's the kind of
stuff that undermines

a person's self-confidence.

- I want to get you
some hot coffee.

- Oh, no, that's OK.

- Oh, it's not for you to drink.

I want to pour it
over your head.

be a Christmas card.

Aren't you rushing

They assigned it as
a special project.

It's supposed to be
original and unusual.

- Christmas is a long way off.

- That's Santa Claus.

That's his head.

- Since when is Santa
Claus an egghead?

Put a hat on him.

- Look, why don't you go

- OK, I'm just asking
a simple question.

- Well, you told me to get
back to my book report.

- Well, why do you
have to erase so much?

- I didn't like the book.

- Can't you wait

- You sure you haven't

- Well, don't let

In fact, it wouldn't look
so bad if you put a bigger

beard on Santa Claus.

- I think it looks
worse than it did.

- I was trying to
avoid the obvious.

- In my circles, it is.

doesn't look good.

In fact, it looks bad.

- Well, that's modern art.

It has to look bad to
be considered good.

And frankly, this looks just
bad enough to be very good.

- This looks bad, period.

- Why don't we take it down
to Pop and see what he thinks?

- What for?

- Well, for one thing, it'll
give you an unbiased opinion.

And for another,
it'll get me out

of doing this book
report for a while.

- Pardon me, dear.

the Cooking section?

for the Sports section.

- Well, it's not here.

Did you see this big sale
the emporium's having?

- Oh.

It's just the kind

and they've marked
it down nearly half.

- Oh, yeah, it's very nice.

- It's supposed to
be for my art class.

It's an original Christmas card.

- Oh!

- No, it's supposed
to be Santa Claus.

See, I told you it's no good.

This is the snow here.

- No, that's Santa
Claus's beard.

[chuckles] Here's an original
touch, the old barbershop

quartet.

- No, that's a group
of carolers, Dad.

They're singing.

- Oh, I see.

The barber pole here
kind of fooled me.

- No, that's supposed
to be a candy cane.

It's kind of impressionistic.

- Oh.

- Let me see it.

- No, no.

- Thjs is the way.

- I told Ricky it's no good.

- Oh, I think it's very good.

Don't you, Dr. Spock?

- Oh, oh, yes, it's fine.

- Who's Dr. Spock?

- He's an old friend
of the family.

- Let me get it over here.

I can get a better look at it.

- It's not very good.

- Oh, sure it is.

It's fine.

It's got a distinct style
to it, a real personality.

- I keep telling David it's
good, but he won't believe me.

- It certainly is a lot
better than some of the cards

I've seen in the past few years.

- See, what I like about it
is here it is only October,

and yet it gives you a
real Christmas feeling.

- It sure does.

- And our professor said
the true test of the card

would be if we
liked it well enough

to send it out ourselves.

- Well, I think anybody would
be happy to send this out

as a Christmas card.
- Now, I--

- If it were reduced
to card size.

- Oh, yeah, I'd like
to send it out myself.

Could send it to Grandma Nelson.

- Well, gee, you don't
have to do that, Pop.

- Just a second, Dave.

This is the time for the
businessman to step in.

Mom, would you care to
order several hundred cards

from the talented brush of
this well-known local artist?

- I think that would
be a wonderful idea.

- Yeah, I do too.

Of course, you'd have
to get them printed up.

We need a couple
hundred of them.

- Oh, I can get them printed.

We got a printing
shop at school.

- I don't know.

That's a pretty big order.

- Don't you think it's a little
early to be ordering Christmas

cards anyway?

- Well, no, that's one of
the big advantages, Dave.

See, this way, we have them all
printed and stamped, addressed,

ready to go.

And so when the Christmas
rush descends on us,

it's one less thing we
have to worry about.

- Yeah, that's a good idea.

- There's another thing, though.

Our card has usually been
a picture of the family.

Don't you think folks might
be a little disappointed?

- You know, maybe Dave's
got a point there.

I know the cards I
always look at first

are the photographs
of people's families.

They always seem so much
more personal and friendly.

- Yeah, that's for sure.
- Wait a minute.

Here's a thought.

Excuse me, Mom.

Remember those pictures we took
up at the lake last summer?

- Yeah, they turned out swell.

- Well, why don't we
just cut out the faces

and paste them
over the carolers?

- Well, that's a wonderful idea.

And then the cards
would still have

the pictures of the family.

- Yeah, you mean,
uh, superimpose them

and then photograph
the whole thing, huh?

- Sure.

- Wouldn't that be a little
complicated for you guys?

- Heck no.
We could do it easy.

We have a darkroom and
everything at school.

We did it last year
for our school annual.

- Sure, don't you remember?

On the tennis page,
they put Ricky's head

on Pancho Gonzales.

- It sounds OK to me.

- Me, too.

- OK, I'll draw up the contract.

Wait a minute, David.

I'll draw up a
contract for you, too.

- What for?

- For my 90%
commission, of course.

- Are you kidding?

The agent only gets 10%.

- Well, at least
our Christmas cards

will be different this year.

- Yeah, that's for sure.

Hey, here's an idea.

As long as we're getting
our Christmas cards early,

why don't we do our
Christmas shopping early too?

- You mean now?

- Well, I don't mean tonight,
but within the next couple

of days.

See, in that way, we can get
everything out of the way.

You know, every year,
we say we wish we hadn't

waited till the last minute.

- Well, it's a little early
to be thinking of what

to get people for Christmas.

- Well, yeah, but
this is the best time.

Stores aren't crowded.

You can take your time and
pick out what you want.

They have much more
of a selection now.

And Christmas week, we can just
sit back and enjoy ourselves.

- Doing what?

- Well, for one thing, we could
give a nice Christmas party.

Remember you said last year
you wish we could give one

but we were too rushed?

- Yes, you're right.

In fact, the more I
think of it, the more

I think it's a darn good idea.

You know, there are times when
you're positively brilliant.

- [chuckles] Now stop
buttering me up just

because it's
practically Christmas.

- Hey, look at Pop!
Which one's mine?

- Cut it out now.

Just because I did my Christmas
shopping early doesn't mean you

guys do your Christmas
opening early.

- You mean we got to
wait till December?

- You're darn right you do.

- Oh, how can you be so cruel?

- We'll have to report
you to Dr. Spock.

- [chuckles]
Where's your mother?

- She's out in the kitchen.

- Oh, I want to show
her some of these gifts,

not her own, of course.

Just the ones that
belong to somebody else.

- Can't we see
some of them, too?

- Yeah, that's only fair.

- Well, I tell you what I'll
do, I bought a nice gift here

for Doc Williams.

I'll let you guys
take a look at it,

but I want you to promise
you won't say anything.

- I promise.

the president I bought Doc.

- Oh, Doc will love that.

- You know, It's kind
of a nice feeling.

Here it is only
October, and I've

got some of my Christmas
shopping done already.

- I know.
I envy you.

- I wish I could
do my shopping now.

- Well, why don't you?

- I can answer that with
one word: M-O-N-E-Y,

spelled "money."

- You guys will have a little
extra money when I pay you

for the Christmas cards.

I'm not going to pay you
until I see the cards.

- Well, they're
right upstairs, Pop.

Come on, Ricky, let's get 'em.

- You know, I just
may do my Christmas

shopping early this year, too.

- Well, I thought that
was the general idea.

The stores aren't
too crowded now.

- What did you get for the boys?

- You won't tell them, will you?

- No, I just want to make sure
I don't get the same thing.

- Well, I bought them
each a sport coat.

I like them.

I think they're nice.

Got this for Dave.

- Oh, that's good looking.

- They're wearing

It's got brass buttons on it.

I got this for Rick.

It's cashmere.

- Oh, isn't that nice?

- I think I hear
the boys coming.

Take them outside around the
house, go up the front stairs

and put them in your closet.

- Do you have the envelopes?

- Yep, right here.

[frantic music]

- Oh, did you get the cards?

- Yeah, here they are.

Hey, what was all
that noise about?

- Oh, nothing.

Just your father, he went
outside for a minute.

- Does he want to see the cards?

- Oh, he'll be right back.

- What's the matter?

- I just saw Pop run
past that window.

- Is that you, Pop?

- It must be.

Here they are.

- Oh, hey, how about these?

- How do you like them, Pop?

- Oh, they're great.

- I think they did a pretty
good job for a high school print

shop.

- They look fine to me.

- The cards turned out
beautifully, didn't they?

- Oh, they sure did.

Hey, as long as
we've got the cards,

why don't we address them?

- Right now?

- Well, yeah, why not?

Get the whole thing over with.
- OK.

I have some household
checks to make out first,

and then I'll help you.

- I'll go get your pen
and your checkbook, Mom.

Make our check out to
"Nelson and Nelson."

- Holy smokes, you sure
have enough bills there.

- Now, don't be frightened.

There are a lot of
them, but they're small.

- Oh, uh, what about
the Christmas party,

you know, the open house?

When do you figure
on having that?

- Oh, we don't have to
decide on that now, do we?

- Well, I think
it'd be a good idea.

I'm going to address
all the envelopes now,

and I thought maybe I
could write the invitations

right on the Christmas cards.

- OK.

- How about the day before
Christmas, the 24th?

- Yeah, that sounds good.

- See, and anybody who wants to
stay and help us trim the tree

is welcome to.

- Let me see it.

Yeah, that's it.

- What are all the marks
next to these names here?

- Oh, the X means we sent
them a Christmas card

and they sent us one.

And the circle means that we
sent them a Christmas card

but they didn't send us one.

- Oh.

- Or they sent us
a Christmas card

and we didn't send them one.

- Which is it?

- I'm trying to think.

- Well, look, why don't I
send them all Christmas cards?

We got plenty of them.

And that way, we're safe.

- OK, but be sure and put
a mark after the names.

- Well, here we are, all
signed, sealed, stamped,

and a Merry Christmas to all.

- I think you did
a beautiful job.

- I honestly think we could have
waited until December, though,

to stamp them.

- What do you mean "we"?

I did practically all the work.

- Well, I was working too.

I finished all these bills.

- Oh, yes, you did very well.

- I'm going to put them in
the upstairs hall closet

until December, and
then we'll mail them.

- Oh, well, if you're

else you get us for Christmas.

- Boy, this is great.

First, Doc finds his
Christmas present,

- Well, you got something

- Well, it's a house coat.

I'll show it to you

it because she was admiring

the ad in the newspaper.

I got it down at the emporium.

- Oh, hey, that's nice, Pop.

- Beautiful?

- Well, give you a rough idea.

- Yeah, it's really beautiful.

- Of course, it'd look

It's the same as mine, I
mean, the one I bought you.

- Harriet, this is ridiculous.

I bought this for your
Christmas present.

This was the package the boy
delivered from the emporium.

- Well, there's

Christmas came early this year.

- Hey, how come you guys got
those coats ahead of time?

- We just opened up the closet
door, and there they were.

- Well, there's nothing
like doing your Christmas

shopping in October.
- Wait a minute.

There was a bunch of envelopes
right on the table here.

Did anybody see them?

- Well, yeah, I mailed them.

You told me to.

- Those were our
Christmas cards!

- You know something?

They may be right.

I've got my Christmas

My gifts have been open,
ready to be exchanged.

store and exchanged them.

- Ricky wanted a top coat,
and I wanted a blue jacket

with brass buttons.

- Well, I guess that's in
the best Christmas tradition.

our Christmas party.

- Yeah, that's right, isn't it?

Naturally, I assume
they'd understand

it was December 24th.

After all, they are
Christmas cards.

- I know, and this is

- 7 o'clock.

invitations sent out for?

- Uh, 7 o'clock.
