we've ever done

in my little closeted

into Columbia University,

and moving to New York City,
I started singing

around New York

What excites me most

so many different stages.

What have y'all been doing
since I saw you last?

Well, for me, I mean,
I've had a few downs.

Like, I lost my job
after the audition,

but I wasn't really sad about it

Right after high school, I was
working in the medical field.

Eventually, I quit
and became a nanny.

Kind of gave me a little
more freedom to work on music.

I always wanted to sing,

and I wanted that
to be my everyday job.

My mom, she's been by my side

throughout everything
I've been through

and made me who I am today.

My mom, she had a lot
of different jobs.

Just being a single mom,

working hard
to give me everything.

We're so proud of you,
and just remember

how amazing you are.

Blinds were absolutely crazy.

When Reba turned
her chair for me,

I couldn't believe it.

I never thought that
I'd be working

with the queen
of country music.

It was just a moment
where I realized

that I was supposed to be
on that stage.

Well, I am a firm believer
that timing is everything,

And I went to college,
and somebody heard me

sing the national anthem

at the National Finals Rodeo
in Oklahoma City.

That was December '74,
and '75, October,

I had a recording contract.

Growing up,
I was always "the Indian kid."

Kids made me feel so left out
just because I was Indian.

the funny Indian kid.

It was always just me trying
to fit into, like, this mold.

I don't know.
It just felt like

I was being someone
who I wasn't.

Once I found music,
it was like everything changed,

and I was able to be myself, and

I met him at a writers camp.

and I was there to write.

Music truly brought us together.

I'm gonna be thinking
about you when I sing the song.

I was, like, sliding out of my
chair 'cause it was just so --

It was so on point.
She's a character.

My father had his own
music video production company,

so at a very young age,

wanting to be an artist
was birthed inside of me.

When I was about 6 years old,
I was in Damian Marley's

"Still Searching" music video.

Since my mom was born
and raised in Jamaica

and my dad came from England,

that would make me
a first-generation American.

They have sacrificed so much to
meet all of my heart's desires.

They are my number-one
supporters,

so I'm excited to have them be
alongside me for this next ride.

When I do these pairings,

I know they call it the battles,
but it's not.

To me, it's about
creating a memorable duet moment

that people
will want to watch

and want to listen to
over and over again.
