was the toughest dive

on Pacific Street

in San Francisco's toughest
waterfront section.

known as Ann Heady,

said to be the wickedest
woman on the West Coast.

But I guess she had to be
to handle her clientele,

ship masters and
commission merchants,

stevedores and smugglers,
crips and thieves.

I went there occasionally,
generally to make an arrest.

This time to listen to
a business proposition.

Sounds like a fine deal, major.

If I didn't have to
stay in San Francisco,

(blows thudding)
(men grunting)

(bottle crashing)
