of course, that maybe she's dead.

Maybe she's alive and then again we think,
"Oh, okay, she's dead."

And then again, there is a bunch of SMS's
that come out. So...

She was definitely alive
after 24th April, 2012.

turned murder-accused Indrani Mukerjea

has made a sensational claim
that Sheena Bora is alive

and she is in Jammu and Kashmir.

Every one of us journalists
who have been going to the court

have, at some point or
the other, really thought that,

is Sheena really dead?

In this entire case,

Indrani has never accepted the fact
that Sheena is dead.

I'm going to uncover the truth
and find out where Sheena is!

I won't stop my search for Sheena.

Indrani Mukerjea has claimed

that a woman resembling Sheena

was recently seen at the Guwahati airport.

Why would someone just disappear
from the face of the earth

when she's got so much
to look forward to in her life?

And if she did, how is it even possible,

in the age of social media,
cell phones and credit cards,

to just vanish without a trace?

I mean, I think it's very wishful
thinking on the defense's part

to think that she is alive.

I mean, I think that's all just sort
of obfuscating the truth.

[Ranjeet] See, in my entire career,

this is the most bizarrest case
that I have ever come across.

This is a jigsaw puzzle

that I think and I believe
that I have solved.

But still, it doesn't make sense,
because as long as Sheena is not found,

the question remains,
what happened to Sheena Bora?

[Vidhie] I don't know if Sheena
has been killed.

I don't know if Sheena's dead.

It's ridiculous. Where is the end?

What is...

What is the start? What is the end?

You know, is Sheena dead,
is she not dead?

Who is...

Where am I meant to be in this point?

Where does my heart lie?

I have spent seven years
trying to figure this out.

All I know is there's a lot of money
involved,

and there's a lot of deceit involved.

[news anchor] Media tycoon
Indrani Mukerjea has been arrested

by Mumbai Police
and charged with murder.

[news anchor 2] Sheena Bora's murder.

[Sahil] How come suddenly after three
years after Sheena's disappearance,

the Khar police station gets to know

that Indrani Mukerjea have killed
her daughter

and have dumped her body in Raigad,

some 100 kilometers from Mumbai.

[mysterious music playing]

There has to be somebody, some source.

There was a conspiracy theory

that Rakesh Maria got a call
from some anonymous source

that there is a missing body found
in Raigad.

And this body is actually Sheena Bora.

She has been killed.
She is not missing.

And Indrani Mukerjea's driver,
Shyamvar Rai,

is involved in the murder.

[Vidya] According to Mumbai police,

after the tip off,

Shyamvar Rai had gone to
Carter Road area in Bandra

to dispose of a gun
that he had been carrying.

Why would a driver walk
eight kilometers

to Carter Road to dispose of the gun
when he lives near the Mithi river.

which is perhaps the easiest
place to dispose of the gun?

[Sahil] As per the police records,

the police found his movement suspicious.

They picked him up.

They found a gun on him.

They took him for the questioning.

And during the questioning,
he revealed that

he himself, Indrani, and Sanjeev Khanna
killed Sheena in 2012.

Why is a driver going
to self-incriminate based on

being caught with the possession
of a gun,

to a murder three years ago,

which necessarily has no connection
to the possession of the gun itself?

You see,

when we arrest any accused,

he discloses the offense
committed by him.

Whether it is one offense,
two offense, three offenses.

Whatever he said, that is the truth.

It is a well-accepted practice
in the police, unofficially,

that if you want to nail a gangster
or a criminal,

you plant a weapon
on him and then make a case

showing a recovery
of an illegal weapon.

[Vidhie] I think this whole angle
that there is an anonymous call

going to Rakesh Maria where
the driver is holding a gun,

I just think that's all made up.

And it's just fucking bullshit.

I would definitely question

who benefits from my mom being put away?

Now, if you look back
at the conduct of the driver

and his relations with the police,
he can never be called a reliable witness.

And perhaps, the police coerced him.

And thereafter, he was given
an incentive, "Okay,

you depose everything,
and we let you off."

An approver under the Indian law

is a person who has thrown
his friends to the dogs

and therefore, his statement
should not be taken on face value

unless and until it has been
corroborated or supported

by impeccable quality evidence,

which has to be independent in nature.

[Vaihayasi] In his testimony,

Shyamvar Rai gave a fresh

and much more sort of
preposterous meaning to the phrase,

"Truth is stranger than fiction."

He's telling a story about
how he was summoned into a room

and he's shown Skype.

Indrani came on his computer screen
and then she said, you know,

"I'm not getting along with my daughter.
You need to go and kill her."

He said something to the effect of,
"Memsaab told me to kill her."

"Memsaab wanted me to do it,
so I did it."

[dramatic music playing]

[Vaihayasi] Then there is Mekhail...

Okay, I was back home by quarter to ten.

So, from Amarsons,
whatever time it takes to reach home,

it should not be more than half an hour.

-[Rahul] Yeah.
-[Indrani] Which is why I was asleep.

Because I had come... I had a guest,

Mekhail, who flew in from,
I am just giving you...

-Who flew in from outside, okay?
-[Rahul] Okay.

One of the reasons for Indrani
wanting to have murdered Sheena

was that they didn't get along at all.

She didn't like her daughter.

And that seemed to be also
the issue with Mekhail.

Indrani told me, "On the 24th,
I'll be in India."

"Come, meet me."

I took an evening flight.

I came to Mumbai.

I reached the Marlow apartment
at nearly 8:30 p.m.

Nobody was home.

I called Indrani immediately.

She told me that...

"We are a bit busy."

"I will take some time.
Relax. I'll join you."

It sounded strange,
but I said, "It's fine."

Today, I feel...

that's when Sheena
was allegedly murdered.

[Vaihayasi] So according to Shyamvar Rai,

they went off to some little unknown lane
in Bandra

where nobody obviously walks around.

Sanjeev Khanna was also
sitting in the front seat,

and Indrani was sitting
in the back with Sheena.

Indrani drugged her.

The drug took effect immediately,
and she was already, like, dazed.

And then Sanjeev came into
the backseat of the car

and held Sheena, apparently, by her hair.

She jumped onto Sheena's lap,
and she held her down very aggressively.

And then, Shyamvar Rai
was trying to aid it a little bit.

So he put his hand behind to hold Sheena.

Indrani strangled her daughter
in five minutes.

[eerie music playing]

[Vaihayasi] Then from there,
they go to the Taj.

Shyamvar Rai's sitting outside the Taj,

which is one of the most busy
places in Bandra, with a body...

while, apparently,
Indrani went to have some cup of tea

while the body is sitting in her car.

And he's sitting in the car
guarding this body.

They took the body home.

In the garage,
they took the body from inside the car,

put it inside the trunk.

[Mekhail] After a while, she came home.

I was on the terrace at that point.

She offered me whiskey.

The first sip I took...

I felt...

the taste of a chemical in my mouth
which I had tasted earlier.

[ominous music playing]

I became alert.

A man came and was standing near the door.

And that's when I saw Sanjeev Khanna.

And actually, I got really scared

because the last time he was around,
I went to that rehabilitation center.

The effect of one sip of that drink
was so much that I couldn't...

I started becoming dizzy and all.

I threw it back.

Soon after, I felt that, maybe,
she is waiting for me to pass out.

Suddenly, she said, "I need to attend
an important meeting right now."

I found it strange.

People don't normally go for meetings
at 1:30 or 2:00 at night.

After Indrani left,

the first thing I did, I ran down.

And I went to the airport directly...

to leave for Guwahati.

I could have been killed that night.

[Vaihayasi] Shyamvar Rai, he stuck
to his story all the way through.

So they moved this body, they were able
to make the body sit up on the backseat.

They put lipstick,
and they combed the hair.

On the way to dumping the body,

they stopped at petrol pumps.

They must have passed lots
of people on the highway,

but there, the body is going straight,

and then they drove all the way to Pen.

They carried the body from the car
into a wooded area.

Rai said that he held the feet,
and Sanjeev held the head.

[Vaihayasi] The way he portrayed himself,
he was the wonderful servant

who did everything that Madam
wanted him to do.

So this entire plot,

according to the prosecution was,

planned, executed, and seen to it
that an end is reached

by Indrani.

[tense music playing]

It's the biggest breakthrough yet.

The DNA results have confirmed

that the body found in the Pen forest
did indeed belong to Sheena Bora.

This is the first concrete proof.

[Vaihayasi] The prosecution was unveiling

their strongest piece of evidence.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Vaihayasi]
The DNA which they took from Indrani

apparently matched the DNA sample

from Sheena's remains.

The evidence that have been
put forth by the prosecution,

the defense has been
digging holes into it.

The DNA analysis in
this particular matter,

the manner in which
it has been done, is, uh...

hilarious.

[Rajdeep] As the trial has started,

the defense has actually
pointed out serious flaws,

such as the DNA analyst
filling out part of a graph by hand

and the defense seized upon these
and upon any technicality

that could possibly get DNA evidence
thrown out of the courtroom.

I'm refuting the claim of the prosecution

that the body found by the police

is Sheena's body.

[director] But, are you guys asking
for another DNA test

to prove that this body is not Sheena's?

Why should the defense ask
as to whether that body

is Sheena's or not?

It is the burden of the prosecution
to prove my guilt

beyond all reasonable doubts.

My job is to punch holes
in the prosecution's case.

[Rajdeep] People will only be convinced
that Indrani is innocent

if the defense can pick holes
in the police version,

that are the size of a lunar crater.

I don't think Indrani Mukerjea
or her defense team

has given a powerful counter narrative

to, in a way, completely challenge
and debunk the police version

that has already stayed in the public
imagination for so many years.

Latest news coming in is that

Indrani Mukerjea may have impersonated
her daughter for quite some time

even after Sheena Bora's murder.

Sources have told India Today that
Indrani used her daughter's mobile phone

for up to a year after her death.

Reports are suggesting
that Indrani Mukerjea

also broke up with Rahul Mukerjea

over the phone,
impersonating her daughter.

[cell phone chimes]

I do not know who sent those messages.

I personally do not believe it was my mom,
who would send messages like that.

[Vidya] Prosecution
had produced a witness,

who was basically a secretary to Indrani,

and she was privy to all
that Indrani was doing

to cover up Sheena not being around.

The witness told the court that
Indrani tried to, you know,

get into the email ID of Sheena.

When they could not succeed,
created an ID for Sheena Bora

[Vaihayasi] She had created
an email ID called

sheenabora@hotmail.com
after Sheena went missing.

"You did not even have the decency
to respond to me with a simple thanks

when I wished you on your birthday."

"You need to stop telling lies about me."

"Stop it now."

"Sheena."

It doesn't... It doesn't sound...

It's just... It was such
a random email that I got.

Like, I was just so confused when,
you know...

Someone... Some... This is some...

If it wasn't Sheena,
it was clearly someone. Right?

These are all allegations
which are not backed by anything.

So there is no corroboration.

Of course I'm denying it.
Of course I'm denying.

I have this daughter who decides
to disappear on me,

and then decide to have
nothing to do with me all over again.

Why am I going to be even bothered to...

You know, forget about creating a new ID.

Why would I want to have anything
to do with her again after that?

The call data records point towards

the locations of Sanjeev Khanna,
Indrani Mukerjea

and the driver, Shyamvar Rai.

All of these three, pointing towards

the same locations as far as
CDR is concerned.

[Vaihayasi] According to Shyamvar Rai,

the day before the murder,
they did all the, you know,

recce for how the murder's gonna happen

and where the bodies are gonna happen.

Shyamvar Rai told the police
that Indrani calls Peter.

That's how they got Peter
into the whole scene.

She explains the two places that she's
found magically within a couple of hours

of, you know, recce.

[Vidya] Peter,
according to the prosecution,

is part of the entire conspiracy.

He was very much involved,
and knew step by step

as to what is being planned,
what is being done.

And Indrani was informing him
every few minutes.

[director] Please answer the question
about the media report

about Indrani's call records showing
she was in Raigad on the 23rd.

You're not denying the fact
that the land was seen? Correct?

[Indrani] Yeah, yeah.
23rd, the land was seen.

-That was it.
-Okay.

Whoever knows Indrani
knows that she's addicted...

to buying properties.

There was an agricultural land
which she intended to purchase.

That property...

when she had a look at,

she came back and was seriously
contemplating buying that.

It is just basically, you know,
we were looking at, you know...

-[director] Farmland.
-Farm... Farm... Farm house.

[interviewer] So, it was, like,
a strange coincidence that...

-No, it was not...
-...that area, that they are claiming

-Sheena's body was found in...
-But everyone who lives in Bombay

-looks for property there.
-...is the same area that...

So, to kind of build their farmhouses.
Everybody has farmhouses there.

[Ranjeet] It definitely is a coincidence

that Indrani happened to be
in Raigad district

looking for an agriculture property
on the 23rd.

But everybody who goes to Raigad
for looking for properties,

to build farmhouses there,
is not necessarily doing a recce

for disposing of dead bodies, correct?

We're getting in some breaking news
that Indrani Mukerjea

will now be filing for divorce
from her husband, Peter Mukerjea.

Peter's role as well leaves
a lot of questions unanswered.

FAMILY COURT, MUMBAI

He always claimed to know nothing,
when it would seem he knew a fair deal.

And if that's true,
neither can point to the other

without incriminating themselves.

I think that led to incredible tension
between the two.

[tense dramatic music playing]

2019 is when the divorce got finalized.

Everyone was saying that,
"Oh," you know,

"Indrani is making life so tough.
She's taking everything that Peter has."

I was just like, "Fuck this,
she's doing this again."

"What the hell is going on?"

I went to court
so I could give my dad a hug.

And, um...

I saw my mom sitting there, and...

She was so excited to see me.

I yelled at her. I just straight up,
I was like,

"What the fuck are you doing?
How can you do this?"

I told her that she'd stolen
all the money from my dad,

and I told her that she had done this.

I told her that she was a murderer.

I told her that,
"You have murdered Sheena."

[exhales deeply]

I just went home...

I took a bottle of gin,
and went inside the room and locked it.

All she wanted to do
was just give me a hug.

I just kept drinking.
I just kept drinking, drinking, drinking.

And I went into my dad's,
you know, bathroom

and I just, like,
opened 14 to 15 different pills,

all different colors,
and just kept popping all of them

one by one by one by one by one.

waking up in the hospital.

The moment I woke up...

I just saw my mom's face in my mind,

and I just cried and cried
and cried and cried.

And I missed her, like,
I actually allowed myself to miss her.

I wasn't there for her.
I should have been there for her.

But you know, just as my mom got bail,
I was like, "I love my mother,

and, you know, she's out
and I want to live with her."

When I publicly kind of took
a stand for my mother,

Peter's family,

they cut me off within a second.

I don't think I was ever part
of the family to begin with.

So there's no real betrayal, you know.

So... I... I'm just being really honest.

And the side I'm picking
right now is my mom's.

And hopefully that side is the truth.

To me, the word "family"
isn't that important in my life because...

I don't know what family means to me,

like the way other people know it.

I'm not trying to be a detective
with my mom.

All I'm focused on right now is
being there for my mother as a daughter,

you know, murderer or not.

[Ranjeet] In my 18,
19 years of practice,

I have never encountered
a matter like this.

Each and every character
of this particular story

is extremely unique.

Everybody has got
their individual agendas.

The kind of people that are there
in this family,

you just can't say who is really
attached to whom.

What is playing on each one's minds.

What role does money and property play
on the interpersonal relationships

within the members of this family?

Mekhail, especially,
has had his own agenda.

Nobody with a sane mind,
who is running away from a killer,

sends a message to the killer saying,
"Hey, I love you so much."

And then continues to send those
kind of messages. So that is...

I mean, you know, ridiculous!

[Mekhail] My relationship with Indrani
is all about financial aid.

I don't want to make her unhappy
in any way.

People do ask me,
"Why didn't you go and find Sheena?"

What could a 20-year-old do,

when he was looking after
his dying grandparents?

How would I leave my house?

[director] For three years,
you claim you're looking for Sheena.

You've never even sent one email
asking where she is.

Right.

[dramatic music playing]

[director] You say the grandparents'
health was really bad.

But then on the other hand,
you are going and buying an SUV?

Their health was not deteriorated or bad
when I bought that car.

-[director] You bought the car in 2014.
-Yeah.

[director] You just told us that
their health was so bad

that you couldn't even look for Sheena
and even send an email to Sheena

because their health was so bad.

Yeah, that's... until I bought the...

their health deteriorated, I said...

They were already sick.

I wanted to buy a SUV.
It was like a dream for me,

because I never drove a SUV.

I was 22 years old.

I didn't have so much brain.

half-truths from the lies

that have been floating around.

We've just got engaged, okay?

So, that's why I can't buy all this.

Some hard, clear, factual evidence
that Sheena is okay, all right?

And that probably means me

So until I get to that stage,

I'm afraid this is all going to stay

Rahul was important,
most important witness of the prosecution.

It's their star witness.

We did a lot of background check
and homework on Rahul.

To the extent that we got Rahul's
earlier criminal record in India

and UK dug out.

Rahul Mukerjea has admitted
in the court yesterday

that his house in the UK
was raided by the police.

They caught him cultivating marijuana
at his place.

They found six to seven plants
at his residence.

They blacklisted his driving license
because he committed traffic violations...

What she does to everyone in the court...

character assassination.

I smoked weed. Rahul smoked weed.

In front of the whole world, she...

does a character assassination
of every person.

Everyone does small mistakes
or stupid stuff in their childhood.

It has nothing to do with the case!

Easily, the biggest moment in this case

was when Rahul came to court,

and he lived up to what
we were all waiting

on the edge of our chairs for.

I was given to understand that Rahul

is a professionally trained actor.

Now, there was the key.

You see, theatrics can have
a great level of impact,

and it is being widely reported
in the media.

The moment he stepped into the box,

I know that this was not
a regular witness,

and that we had a hard nut to crack.

[Vidya] Everyone really wanted to know
as to what Rahul would come out and say,

when he's put in the witness box.

He did explain the entire thing.

Rahul was speaking about
how much he loved Sheena.

How much he missed her,

how much he was looking out
for her to return.

[Vaihayasi] But the defense's strategy
was just to attack him.

And I don't think it really worked,

because you still had
an overwhelming sense

of empathy for him.

When lawyer Sangle was talking
about your, you know,

"We don't want to know the details
of your love story."

So, when he said that,
it was like he was slapping Rahul.

And you could feel it.

He was... He felt hurt,
he felt knocked down.

Until Rahul came to the stand,
I didn't feel that anybody was credible.

I didn't feel that I was seeing
the truth anywhere.

But when Rahul came to the stand,

I finally felt that a lot of
what he was saying was the truth.

He turned out to be the prosecution's
strongest witness

'cause he really was the only person
who looked for Sheena.

Nobody looked for Sheena,
he looked for Sheena.

He would call up Sheena's real father
and say, "Come on, look for her."

He's continuously pestering

Siddartha Das, Sheena's biological father.

[Indrani] Alleged.

-I broke... Indrani, please. I'm...

[Vaihayasi] Rahul called him...

I think 77 times or something.

Because Rahul was living with Sheena

and Rahul was not married to her,
so he had no legal rights.

So he wanted somebody
who was her blood relative,

to put in a complaint.

So he was trying to convince
her real father to do that.

Rahul told his love story
like he was the man who loved this girl.

I mean, you could see it in his face.

Like when he would talk
about Sheena in court,

his face would soften and you could see
that his mind was going back.

You felt that this girl had gone.

You felt the loss, the grief,
the mourning.

And he reminded the court many times,
that why are we here?

We're here because a girl

for years together,

you forget what you're there for.

But he kept sort of bringing it back.

You felt that he was doing it
because he wanted justice for Sheena.

and named it "Justice for Sheena."

Because at that point,
when I came out of prison,

I believed that...

Sheena may not be alive.

to "Justice for Indrani."

Because I deserve justice.

I have spent six and a half years
in prison,

for a girl who's probably still alive.

Okay, so at this point in time,

I think... I am, honestly, for me,

justice for myself is very,
very important.

Because I have not just gone
through this trial in court.

I have gone through this trial
in the media.

Media just decided,
everyone decided that

I was guilty.

I was called names.
I was called a bad mother.

I think I have been a good mother.

I may not have been the perfect mother,

but I think I have been a good mother.

I love Vidhie a lot, I do.

I am very angry with Mekhail,
for the way he has behaved,

and for all the lies that he has spread.

I have been extremely,
extremely hurt by Peter.

He lied and lied and lied.

And that really made me angry

because all his lies
put me into further trouble.

I think I have no family.

I think my family has let me down,

really, really badly.

And I feel really, really betrayed
by it all, by my first born,

by Sheena.

I honestly feel that Sheena
could have been the best.

And I feel she was diligent,
she was warm,

very, very kindhearted.

Now, from that "was,"
I think it is an "is,"

because if she is alive, then I take back
all the things that I have said.

Because then I think
she is very manipulative

and she is a very,
very naughty girl.

A person decides to leave,
a 25-year-old woman.

When I left home, did my parents
come looking for me?

No! They didn't, right?

So nobody's talking about that, right?

Why not?

I do not need to answer
to anybody anymore.

I think I'm just on my own,

and I'm very happy to be
the way I am because I think...

I am in more control of my life.
My emotions.

And I feel really detached from everybody.

I don't have to really pretend
to be Peter Mukerjea's wife,

or I don't have to be...

You know, Vidhie's grown,
Mekhail's leading his own life,

Sheena is hiding somewhere
in Kashmir or whatever.

So, I am just to myself,
I can just be myself.

I can laugh, I can cry.
I can just do whatever I feel like.

I can say whatever I feel like
and I feel great.

I really feel free now. Honestly.

like Indrani Mukerjea...

I wouldn't even now say that
I'm convinced that she didn't do it.

I really cannot say that.
It's too complicated a case for me.

But I have always wondered...

this person, she had re-made
from practically nothing.

She had worked pretty damn hard
to build this life for herself.

Just the idea of protecting
that carefully made-up life

would be enough for someone
to commit murder?

But, you know,
when you read about monsters,

when you read about psychopaths,

when you read about
certain successful people

who sometimes are borderline psychopaths,
perhaps it is possible.

Indrani Mukerjea can never
escape Sheena Bora.

She will never be able to escape her
in her lifetime.

Sheena Bora will travel with
Indrani Mukerjea till the end of her time.

And so will the idea that she could
have killed Sheena Bora,

who was her daughter.
