Relic Hunter 306 Star of Nadir

The thief of baghdad!

He has stolen the star of nadir!

(nigel:)is that you and queen talib?

(sydney:)yeah, on a dig here 10 years ago.

She wasn't known as talib back then.

Her maiden name was danielle west

Wild west.

She knew more about relic hunting

In her little finger.

I have a feeling that you two searching

For the star is going to be quite the reunion.

We shouldn't be stopping out here.

Sorry.

I can't make out what they're saying.

They're looking for someone.

(man:)stop that man.

[gun shot]

That was close.

Sydney, he gave that man a gun.

(ticket-man:)passports.

(ticket-man:)passports.

Passports.

Huh?

Our papers are in order.

We're here to see the queen.

I've always wanted to say that.

Then your visit will be brief.

Why?

You haven't heard?

Queen talib is dead.

(sydney:)I just can't believe danielle is dead.

She didn't give you any indication

That her life may have been in jeopardy?

She said, "we've got competition,

Get here as soon as you can."

I'm just kicking myself I didn't ask more.

(sydney:)there's the sultan.

(sultan:)sydney, if only the circumstances were different.

Your highness.

Hold it.

No way to treat an old friend.

My associate, nigel bailey.

Your highness.

Mr. Bailey.

What happened?

I spoke to her only two days ago.

Listen, why don't I go to the rooms and...

Well if that's alright with you...

Please.

Your highness.

Come, sydney.

Danielle was in a remote village

Teaching children how to read.

She couldn't have any of her own,

So teaching them was what she loved most.

I know she did.

And then on her way back,

Her jeep went out of control.

It was an accident.

It was late, she was alone,

She must have fallen asleep at the wheel.

There was no one to see it happen.

The number of times, sydney,

I begged her

Begged

For her to take a driver on those trips,

But...

That wasn't danielle.

I'd like to stay for the funeral.

Of course, yes.

It will be after three days.

Janeeza, as is our custom.

You'll have to excuse me, sydney,

Endostand has been dealt a terrible blow.

Danielle's death has thrown

The entire country into turmoil.

I can imagine.

No, you can't.

There are even wild rumours flying

That her death was an attack against my government.

Was it?

We have traditionalists.

They are opposed to my social reforms.

He's even called for a holy war, a jihad,

To return endostand to its former ways.

Sharum.

Sharum will take you to your rooms.

Hello?

Hello?

Hello.

(nigel:)it's alright, I won't bite.

(guard:)mr. Bailey?

Yes.

I heard voices.

Oh.

Excuse me, I am omar,

The sultan's chief of security.

It's just me talking to my...Self.

I do it a lot, confuses everybody.

He's gone.

Where is sydney fox?

She's out. Can I help?

I have something for her.

Well, you can leave it with me.

No. I will come back.

Please do not tell anyone I was here.

I... Wait.

You alright?

Yeah, I had to see this place.

Seems other people felt the same way.

I just wish we knew more about what happened.

What did the sultan say?

It was an accident.

And you're thinking

Danielle's death

And her search for the star are connected?

It would help if we knew

Who her competition were.

Probably the usual suspects:

Rival relic hunters, thieves...

One of the sultan's political enemies.

There may be a clue in whatever

It was danielle wanted to show you.

I'll talk to the sultan

As soon as we get back.

What?

I don't know.

Fire.

(nigel:)syd.

That's odd.

(nigel:)what?

According to the sultan,

All that's up this road is remote villages.

In the mood for a drive?

After we take a look at danielle's research.

It has been settled.

Father, please...

The time for discussion is past.

Am I to have no say in this?

Danielle would have had one.

Danielle was a woman

Who stood by her commitments.

I expect no less from you.

Tomorrow night,

You will be present

At the announcement of your engagement.

I expect behaviour befitting a princess.

Perhaps you expect too much, father.

Sydney, who's that girl?

(sydney:)that's the sultan's daughter, alia.

(nigel:)that's the girl who snuck into our rooms earlier.

You sure?

Yeah.

Nigel.

That's the man from the train.

Highness, duck!

Get up.

I got him!

We will take over from here.

I had him.

You shot him in the back.

I don't recognize him.

He is not one of ours.

Well, instead of a talkative witness,

You've got a dead assassin.

(nigel:)I'm no security expert,

But I'd have wanted him alive.

Guards, let us find out how this man

Got onto the palace grounds.

Your highness...

Let omar take care of it.

(sultan:)I am surrounded by men

Whose duty it is to protect me

And it is you that saved my life.

Maybe that is why danielle called you here.

I am indebted to you both.

Thank you.

Danielle didn't tell you?

She was looking for the star of nadir.

(sultan:)no, danielle gave up relic-hunting.

That's why she called us here.

So that we could find the relic for her,

So that she wouldn't have to break her vow to you.

(sultan:)did she tell you where it could be found?

(sydney:)well she hadn't shared that information with us yet,

But I was hoping that I could

Maybe take a look at her research.

I knew my wife, sydney,

There is no research to find.

It may sound crazy,

But I think it'll tell us

Why she was out on that road

The night that she died.

She was returning from teaching children.

I think she may not have told you everything

That she was doing out in the desert.

I think she was out there looking for the star.

No, she wasn't,

Because it doesn't exist

And you merely mentioning it

Is enough to fuel the wild speculation

Surrounding her death.

Yes, but what if danielle was right?

What if she found a clue

Leading her to the star?

I could pick up where she left off.

(sydney:)now you and I both know that the star

Is the supreme symbol for

The talib clan's claim to rule endostand.

With this in your hands,

No one would dare challenge you.

And all this talk about a jihad would be over.

(nigel:)your highness, isn't it possible

These could be the reasons

That danielle could be looking for the star?

No! Because it doesn't exist.

And it has nothing to do with danielle's death.

(sydney:)I've never seen you like this.

Is there something that you're afraid of?

Something that you know?

Something you suspect?

No.

But if hakim mustafa was to hear

That you are looking for the star...

Hakim mustafa?

The leader of the taladen.

Alia is to marry his son, jamaal.

It has been arranged.

The taladen are your mortal enemies.

I have no son, sydney,

To assume the throne.

(sultan:)the only way to prevent a civil war of succession

That will tear this country apart

Is for alia to marry jamaal mustafa.

Danielle would never have...

Allah akbar, kalifa talib.

God be with you, king mustafa.

May I present sydney fox

And her associate nigel bailey

This is my son, jamaal mustafa.

Ah.

(hakim:)I heard what happened earlier.

How fortunate the assassin failed.

Fortunate for me.

This attempt is proof

You have enemies willing to risk death

To bring endostand back to its former self.

Its former ways.

Then it is important that I remain strong.

Through the union of our families.

So it shall be.

I can't stay here a minute longer.

Would you excuse us, your highness?

Yes.

Ooh, sorry.

(soldier:)out of my way.

(nigel:)why?

Because the taladen practice a religion

That basically institutionalizes

The physical abuse of females.

Some would say that's merely

Their culture according to holy law.

Based on an interpretation

By a few men of a holy book

That's meant to bring goodness to men and women.

(nigel:)alright, I admit

It's insanely brutal and vicious,

But it's still your rule.

Never get involved in politics

I just broke it.

Now my gut is telling me that danielle

Was close to finding that star.

She needed us to go and recover it,

But where?

(alia:)I can tell you.

The ruins at azir.

Alia.

I'm so glad you've come.

I'm sorry for running away from you earlier,

You startled me.

You startled me.

(alia:)I didn't want anyone to know

I was coming to see sydney.

My stepmother gave this to me

In case anything happened.

She said you'd know what to do with it.

She knew.

Did she die because of the star?

It's looking that way.

It appears to have been written

By the thief of baghdad himself, in 1445.

It's like a will,

It's a list of everything he stole,

Including the star.

Can authenticate it?

Well he signed it with his signature mark,

Two swords crossed.

Danielle was trying to save me

From my marriage to jamaal mustafa, wasn't she?

I'm not sure.

But knowing your stepmother,

She would never have agreed to this.

(nigel:)what you've done by coming here,

It was very brave.

I tried to tell my father about the star,

But he is too afraid to let me look for it.

Afraid of hakim mustafa?

He threatened a jihad,

To return endostand to its old ways

Unless I marry his son,

So the families will share power.

That's disgusting.

You know, it's not too late for us to try

And get you out of here.

I would never willingly marry a taladen.

But I love my father,

And I love my people.

Then what do you say we find that star

And put the power back in your hands?

Can we do that?

Well with the star,

Your father would have no need

Of an alliance with mustafa,

And you won't have to marry his son.

Yes.

You said danielle was looking at the ruins near azir?

Then that's where we'll start.

When do we leave?

We?

You're not going anywhere.

You're going to save my life but leave me here.

Meet me by the south gate after dark.

Tomorrow my attendants

Can say I'm sleeping the day away.

Like a princess.

You really think hakim mustafa would call for jihad?

I did not see you at prayers.

Don't worry, hakim,

I tend to my own prayers.

Sit?

Perhaps not well enough.

Your daughter left the palace

With the female relic hunter and her associate.

I'm sure you're mistaken. Omar, fetch alia.

Perhaps you're right.

My daughter knows her duty, hakim.

I am told this the same woman adventurer

Who was a friend to your late wife.

Say what you're about to say next

With great care, hakim.

Only that rumours are flying.

That they are searching for the star of nadir.

A rumour that, if true,

Will trigger a jihad

And see our beloved country

In flames before nightfall.

We are fortunate my son values

The stability this allegiance will bring

And knows his solemn duty to his people.

Is that not true, jamaal?

Yes, father.

Your highness, she's gone.

And so is her vehicle.

Her attendants were covering for her absence.

Rest assured that she will return

Safely.

I will pray for our nation's future

And for yours, you are right.

Jamaal, we'll go and make certain.

Omar.

Alia is your responsibility.

Yes, your highness.

How could he know

Before you that she was gone?

Shall I find out, your highness?

Why would my father's men be guarding the ruins?

If they are your father's men.

Looks like word's out on our relic's location.

(nigel:)the thief's will is cryptic in places.

Obviously intended to be read

By one of the members of his inner circle

Someone who knew his shorthand, so to speak.

While it doesn't mention azir specifically,

It does say this about the star of nadir:

"ride due north from the palace of the talibs

Until your horse gets winded two-fold.

Look for the star within the stars.

Two-fold. What's that,

About thirty, forty miles?

40 would put us here in azir.

(nigel:)it was a thriving oasis

Back in the days of the thief of baghdad,

Unfortunately it was also rather large.

I mean, searching these ruins would take months.

Sydney, the ruins of al baraq mosque

Are here in azir.

Al baraq means "stars among stars"

"look for the star within the stars"

The thief had a sense of humour.

Well we know from sources

Tales of the arabian nights

That the thief was a notorious prankster.

(sydney:)he stole the jewel in broad daylight

From under the sultan's nose.

Wouldn't it be just like him

To hide the sultan's most precious relic

In one of the sultan's mosques?

The al baraq would have been the largest,

Most central building at the time.

Those steps leading up to the flat surface

Remains of the foundation?

Let's check it out.

What about the guards?

You read my mind.

Alia, why don't you stay here

Until one of us gives the al l- clear signal.

And what will we be doing?

As if I already didn't know.

Three guesses.

Actually four.

Hi.

Alia, do something.

[honking]

Are you alright?

Yeah, thanks.

What were you planning for an encore?

That was about as far as I thought it through.

Thanks but next time...

Stay put. Got it.

We better tie the rest of these guys up.

(alia:)what exactly are we looking for?

(sydney:)I'm not sure.

The thief's will said to look for a star

Within the stars.

Sydney.

I think I've found something.

What are you thinking, a foundation stone?

(nigel:)it looks local,

It was probably quarried nearby.

These markings are old.

Yeah. Much older than the rest of the ruins.

[together]stars.

That's the ancient clan symbol of the talibs.

Another star within stars.

There's a stone floor down below.

Okay, I got you.

This must be part of the foundation

Of some much older structure that survived.

(sydney:)nigel.

(nigel:)the thief's mark.

It's an inscription of some sort.

801 a.H. An islamic year.

(nigel:)the earliest date for an islamic calender

For which a julian calender date

Is exactly known is 10 a.H.,

Which is 632 a.D.

So if you do the math...

801 a.H. Becomes...

1423 a.D.

The year of the theft.

Did the thief do that?

That's odd.

Yes, the hilts of the swords

Are crossed at the top as opposed to the bottom.

Think if we inverted it,

It might activate a trigger?

And it is the thief's signature.

(sydney:)hold this.

[rumbling]

The star of nadir.

It's beautiful.

[rumbling]

Come on, we better get out of here

Before this place comes down around our ears.

Oh gosh, nigel,

You know we really should come back

And document this...

Step out of there.

(sydney:)omar, what a pleasure.

Your weapon, please.

Jamaal?

You've never even met him?

No.

What's this all about?

I have come to take you back to the palace.

Return with me.

No, we have found...

Alia.

(jamaal:)you have no choice.

Neither of us do.

You have brought shame on your family, alia.

Put on your veil.

Not in this century, omar.

(omar:)obey your future husband

And do your duty.

You disobedient, little...

She has turned her back on her family, jamaal.

Let her suffer the result.

Enough.

This can't be avoided.

You know what is at stake.

I cannot...

Betray my father.

Why don't you take

Those men back with you, alia.

Come with me back to the palace.

Who are these soldiers, omar,

That ignore a princess of endostand?

(omar:)I'll have them escort miss fox

And mr. Bailey safely to the palace

In the range rover.

Two of you, go on ahead.

Will you be alright, sydney?

Go on.

We'll be fine. Won't we?

(soldier:)we searched down below, omar,

There's no sign of the star.

(jamaal:)omar, we've got what we came for.

Not quite.

Where is the star, ms. Fox?

I don't know what you're talking about.

Have it your way.

Both of you, back down there.

What's happening?

You don't know?

(sydney:)fine, but all we found down there

Were some rags that belonged to a thief.

You think that I am a fool?

No. No, no, no. A fool? You? No, no?

Look, the return of endostand

And its rightful heritage,

It cannot be stopped.

Let me guess, I give you the star

And then neither it nor us makes it back

To the palace.

Give me the star, spare your life.

Okay.

Alright, I hate using guns,

But I'll make an exception in your case.

Put 'em down.

Put your guns down or I shoot him.

Do it!

Move. Move. Get in the car.

(sydney:)what's this, omar,

Some kind of remote?

You military guys love that crap.

Is that why you wanted us to take the range rover?

A little something added

To help take it off the road?

Just like you did with danielle's car!

Son of a...

What's this?

I heard your daughter was found in azir,

With this western treasure-seeker.

As you can see,

She has returned willingly, hakim.

Good. Complete obedience.

That is what a man requires from his wife.

You will learn to manage her.

I doubt anyone will ever do that, father.

Silence!

You will do as you are told.

Not by you.

You can learn a lot from your son, hakim.

Jamaal, come here.

(sultan:)about loyalty and honour.

I believe this is the rightful property

Of the sultan of endostand.

Back where it belongs after 600 years.

It cannot be real.

The star was lost to your family for generations.

You need me

And this alliance.

Not once omar makes a full confession

That implicates you.

(nigel:)just before heading off to jail.

(jamaal:)father, the sultan rules endostand.

There will be no jihad

And there will be no marriage,

Unless alia and I wish it.

(sydney:)sorry about your jihad, hakim.

(sultan:)have you ever met a western woman

With a passion, hakim?

They tend to perform miracles.

Your highness.

Your highness.

Thank you.

Thank danielle.

[fax ringing]

(karen:)you think?

Okay, thanks, ahmed, I'll let you know.

The museum in endostand says

They're extending an open invitation,

All expenses paid,

If you'll set up the star of nadir exhibit.

Dry climate, all expenses

I'd be there in a heartbeat.

Tell them I'd be delighted.

Maybe I can get ahmed

To spring for another ticket.

Uh huh.

It's from alia. Nigel.

Alia's sending us all of danielle's research.

That's great, because something's

Been bothering me about the thief of baghdad's will

That the rest of her research might help clear up.

Oh?

Well the writer's supposedly

The man himself.

He's having trouble with his pronouns.

He keeps referring to himself

In the female gender.

That's curious.

Yeah.

Unless the thief wasn't a he but a she.

I wonder.

(sydney:)I suppose anything's possible.
