The way my father looked after me
and the stories he used to tell me

are just pieces of memory
before I turned four,

when I started gymnastics.

I always wanted more.

After a European championship
I wanted to go to a World competition,

to win medals, and then
to get into the Olympic Games.

An Olympic medal is
every athlete's dream.

I do believe this was a moment
that made history,

no matter what happened afterwards.

I was just wondering whether the people
who decided in my case had kids,

and how would they like
if their children

had to go through
the exact same thing they did to me.

At that Sydney all around final,
I've only competed honestly

and won my gold medal.
And now I want it back.

Stay close to Andreea.
She is an innocent child.

And maybe...

I can say I was very disappointed.

I can't judge this,
I am just a child.

I didn't remember clearly
this press conference.

But you do remember that you
were there, with lots of people...

Yes, I remember being there, surrounded
by cops that were making room

to clear our way through the crowd.
It felt like we were in a movie.

Now that's a sad story.
That's the story of an innocent girl.

When we interrogated her
for a long time,

it was clear that she had no intention
to take a doping agent.

And we decided not to sanction her,
because she was not guilty.

But we had to remove the medal,
a very painful decision.

They say "We didn't sanction her,
but we took her medal".

They kept saying
the same thing.

Well, if they all knew
that it was a sad situation,

that the athlete was a minor and she has
never had the intention to cheat,

how many more arguments
were needed

to conclude that the
athlete was innocent ?

I realize only now,
watching this,

why the entire Romanian delegation
kept me away from it all

and didn't let me get near or watch
this kind of statements.

Would you have understood their
statements back then ?

No.

How does it make you feel

when you listen to people
talk about this decision ?

It makes me feel...
it actually challenges me.

It challenges me to want to meet
all the people I saw here.

And to figure out
what were they really thinking

when they thought
this decision was right.

OK. I should start by telling you
the story in brief.

I'm sure you already know it
in general terms

and I don't think
you need a lot of details

for what we have
to discuss and decide.

That is, how can we make these people
understand that they've been overzealous

and that one way or another,
even after 15 years,

it wouldn't be a tragedy to try
to set things right somehow.

I have a few issues. First of all,
you won't convince them,

because it's not their decision to make.

Secondly, if you go
to persuade somebody,

there is a nuance that I don't think
it's good for your case.

You'd put them up against a wall,
not convince them.

It's not like "Let's give her something"
"Ok, bye-bye !" It won't work like that.

Don't get me wrong,

but I really think that to a certain
extent it comes down to their goodwill.

The worst thing about any
international organization

is that you will almost never convince
them to admit they made a mistake.

So you can force their hand privately,
by way of a civil action.

Meaning that you are going to sue them

for the offence
committed against you.

Now, that sounds interesting.

I don't know if you realize
what you've got yourself into.

Andreea was born with the energy
she still has today.

When she first started to kick
in my womb she was very naughty.

Her father used to say:
"Let me listen to my boy".

Because he said
she was going to be a boy

and when she was born she was an....

I grew up in a block of flats

and I would jump all day long
from morning till night.

There were neighbours who lived below us
who probably wanted to rest,

but my hours of sports
were more important by far.

I was unstoppable.

Her father, passionate about sports,

heard that you can do
gymnastics in Barlad.

And one day he came in
with his little girl.

He entered this door and told me:
"I want my girl to do gymnastics."

I admit I didn't agree with this.
I wanted her to be a studious girl,

to be mommy's girl.

At that time, I didn't even realize
that she would go to do gymnastics,

at elite level, and she will
leave my side so young.

One day I told my father that I thought
I shouldn't go to the gym any longer,

because the coaches asked me
to step on the balance beam

and it was too high and too narrow.
The beam is only 10 cm wide.

I could barely fit my feet on it.

My father came with the right answer
for my age at that time,

but valid even today.

He told me: "Get up there without any
fear, Daddy will be waiting for you

at the other end of the balance beam".

So each time I was supposed
to go up there

and felt even the slightest fear,

I was thinking of his words.

- He supported you a lot.
- Yes, indeed.

If you are where you are today
it's also because of him.

He has always supported you
and pushed you.

Absolutely.
And not only when I was here.

He did that when I was
at the national team as well.

If you don't have somebody who you know
will always be there for you

whether things go well or not...

Yes, but this was his dream.

The morning when Andreea left
with my husband was very hard for me.

I cried a lot and when he came back
home alone it was even worse.

I remember she used to say
it was so far away where she was going.

But that was it, we had to do it.

I told her it's going to be fine
and we would go visit her in Deva.

Easy, Raducan, easy !

When I met Andreea for the first time,

I felt she was a child
with whom you could communicate.

She had a certain sparkle in her eyes.

I trusted, and I wasn't wrong,
that she could understand

both what the coach wanted and
her role and place in the gym.

Green for vaults !

No one, no matter how empathic,

can understand
what a training camp means.

We were 24/7, 360 days per year,

in tough trainings and on a strict diet,

under a pressure that few
have experienced in their lifetimes.

On top of that, we knew too well that
on the back of our training suit

it wasn't written Andreea Raducan
or Simona Amanar, but Romania.

The phenomenon of women's gymnastics
emerged in a strange way in Romania,

through methods that were
harmful to human beings.

The idea to bring little girls
into gymnastics,

brought forth by Bela Karolyi
in the '70s, was a cynical idea.

There were no gymnasts of that age
before the Nadia Comaneci era.

The great champions before Nadia
were women.

They were in their 20s, beautiful women,
emotionally mature,

but of course they couldn't achieve

the results gained later
by child gymnasts.

Why ?
The physical explanation is simple:

due to the anatomical segments,
due to breasts,

thighs and buttocks
that develop in a woman.

It kept them from getting the results

of the gymnasts aged 14-15-16.

They were deformed by this
special training regimen

that has also left them
with physical consequences.

They all had a difficult childhood,

with all meals supervised
and a strict garrison-like regimen.

They were raised with the mind-set
of blind performers -

I could even call them robots -
who do not protest, just execute.

still haven't learned to keep
your legs straight during landing.

he told them:

I didn't performed well in the gym ?

I would start to cry,

because I couldn't tell Mariana
or Bellu that "you are... and so on..."

and Mrs Mariana would say:

"Raducan, maybe your dad can come
and train you on the banister."

This could be
a slap over the head if you want.

- It is a slap over the head.
- But it's not a physical one, I mean.

There were slaps over the head,
but this is one too.

And to tell this to a child who misses
her father it is a slap over the head.

One day, together with my colleagues,
we made a list of what we wanted to eat

and weren't allowed by the coaches.

After we made that list, we waited
for the coaches to fall asleep -

or at least this is what we thought,
that they were asleep -

and one of the girls jumped
out of the window, to a kiosk nearby.

So, this was found in the sauna.

Who got you these things ?

People say that we are too strict.

Well, top gymnastics doesn't mean
to wait for the athlete at the door

and throw rose petals
when she or he enters the gym.

Keeping proportions, of course,
we'd rather act, as the saying goes:

"He who makes you cry
has your interests at heart."

If Mariana represents
strictness and discipline,

let's say that I'm the one who brings
to the table the parental measure,

a touch of closeness, of understanding.

has dominated our life

and what was normal for others

in their daily life

for us has simply come second.

So, this was an unnatural program.

That led, however,
to remarkable performances.

It doesn't mean that Bellu
is not the best coach in the world;

it doesn't mean that the work of these
girls or their extraordinary talent

shouldn't be admired.

At some point, as far as I'm concerned,

there was a superstition
for my anniversaries:

they would buy me something
made of gold, anything.

They said gold attracted gold.

I expected so impatiently to leave
for the Olympic Games,

because the preparation
had been well structured

by the coaches
and well understood by us.

We had chances of winning
important medals.

and see unfold the competition
we'd been preparing for so many years.

In Sydney, Andreea was
among the children

who we hoped would win medals.

This is what every athlete wants,
at least to participate in the Olympics.

It is the only competition
where all sports meet

and we all want to prove
that we are the best.

When we left Romania,
there were around 25-30 degrees,

a very beautiful weather.

When we arrived in Australia,
there were around 15 degrees,

quite chilly, and it was hard to adjust.

In the gym where they warmed up,
the temperature was of 15 degrees.

We repeatedly complained about this.
It was so cold that we couldn't train.

And the girls caught a cold.
The first was Simona Amanar.

Simona shared the room with Andreea,
so Andreea caught the cold from her.

We couldn't isolate them,
because there were no empty beds.

after winning the title
for the team all-around event.

the individual all-around final and
the apparatus finals.

We still wanted to win medals.

Three girls from Romania have qualified
for the individual all-round final.

Simona Amanar, Maria Olaru and I.

The all-around final decides
who is the best gymnast.

I did quite a good vault,

although there was
a very unpleasant situation

for the Olympic Games.

I kept feeling
that I wasn't doing the vault correctly,

technically speaking,

and I tried
to explain it to Mrs Mariana.

Of course, it wasn't the right moment
to complain

and to say something was happening.

The vaulting horse was off.
Something was wrong.

We have seen the bitterness

of the Russian women
in taking the silver,

as Romania took the gold.

my ligaments were affected.

It takes decades of training
to become an Olympic champion.

Why did somebody make a mistake

and positioned the vaulting horse lower

and took away my gold ?

to drink more liquids

in order to undergo testing faster.

One, two, three
hours have passed.

Simona finished the test at some point
and went to the hotel,

while I remained with the team's doctor.

In fact, before the doping control,

each doctor fills in a chart
for the chosen athlete,

with the drugs given to the athlete,

the supplements,
the anti-inflammatory drugs

as it was my case, and a Nurofen.

Before entering the competition hall
for the individual all-around final,

I've told our doctor that I was having
a slight headache.

He had this medicine handy

because my roommate at Sydney,
Simona,

had a bit of a cold.

And maybe he thought that,
being roommates,

I could have gotten
the cold as well.

He thought that this drug
would only help me.

Eventually, towards morning, I managed
to finish the doping testing.

Seeing me there for hours in a row,
because I couldn't provide

the requested quantity of urine,
people there said it was ok,

they would use the quantity collected
for both test A and test B.

It's done !

Three days have already passed and
we were getting ready for the finals.

We were all waiting for Bellu,
as he usually came to pick us up.

It was a day with two very important
finals, beam and floor.

Mr Bellu rushed into our villa and
went straight to Mrs Mariana's room.

I was in the bathroom
getting my hair fixed,

ready to go to the gym.

Look at my hair,
I just have a few threads.

The door was open and I was
with the back towards it,

so I didn't see Bellu coming.

What I went through then,
I see it as a trauma.

vocally, physically -

they cry, they look at someone,
they reach for a hand,

but there are also people who withdraw,
become silent.

How did you react ?

Well, I would have talked
if I had known what to say.

I was so numbed by the situation.

I would have expected almost anything.

Least the fact that someone would
accuse me of something I didn't do.

It was a crisis situation.

They started by asking me if I had
eaten anything from a stranger,

if I had drunk from a bottle of water,
left it open and then drank again.

Initially they picked on you.

Where did you make a mistake ?

The truth is you took it,

There's no tiptoeing around it.

we were called in to trial.

It's just that there
nobody asked me anything.

What's the best result you can hope for

I didn't even know my name
or what was I doing there,

if I'd made a mistake
or what should I have done differently,

how to tell those people
that I was innocent

and didn't understand
what was going on.

There are a lot of things
that don't add up.

Starting with the fact that

the urine quantity provided
was not enough as required,

and things took a turn to which
I couldn't find an answer to this day.

And all the details that should
have been taken into consideration...

When someone weights 60 kg
and takes this pill,

processes differently the substance,
bearing in mind his or her weight,

than someone weighting 37 kg,
my weight at that time.

That's nearly half the weight.

They said there is no problem

if I can't provide the necessary
quantity for the urine test,

but the quantity I provided differed
from the one that got to the lab.

I sent 62 ml of urine
and the lab got around 100 ml.

After taking the test,
the urine sample is sealed.

Only the lab is allowed
to open the sample.

Ordinarily, nothing should have
gone wrong on the way to the lab.

But it did.

Unfortunately, all the procedural
errors, as evident as they were,

haven't been taken into account.

The quantity of urine can't double
on the way to the lab.

The document signed by Andreea,

the team's doctor and the IOC official
for 62 ml was brought up as evidence

and there was an obvious discrepancy
between the quantities.

All the officials were tense because
of the many on-going doping scandals.

They even found a coach
from Kazakhstan

who had come with a jar
full of doping substances,

under the excuse
that he wanted to treat his baldness.

The situation was hilarious.
I don't understand the doping trend

that manifested at the Sydney Olympics.

"Zero tolerance"
claimed IOC at Sydney .

Maybe even if you took a mint drop

and all I wanted was
to get back to my parents.

when I left Sydney,

I still thought that things

I simply couldn't believe it.

has betrayed you then ?

No, maybe some people did,
but not gymnastics.

The people who made the lists,

Our bottom line is that
the IOC made a decision

following rules of their own making
that they failed to observe.

It's a very painful decision,

and I must tell you that this is
one of the worse experiences I had

in my Olympic life.

Having to strip the gold medal from
the individual gymnastic champion

for something
that she did not intentionally do.

What's the purpose
of all that hard work,

if only big shots matter
and that's the way things are done.

They told me that I was innocent,
but I already knew that.

The whole world knew.

But I am still left without that title.

That pill probably didn't help
your performance.

For sure not.

It's hard to prove
that it can enhance performance.

But it's a member of the same class
with amphetamine,

ephedrine, and all those stimuli.

And the rules don't require you

to show that each and every
drug has a positive effect,

you only need to show that one member
of the class has an effect.

And we used amphetamine for that.

Nobody argues about amphetamine.

They do argue about ephedrine,
pseudoephedrine.

They still argue ?

Yeah.

But does it really enhance performance ?

It's never been determined.

Do you think IOC makes mistakes ?

- Sure they do !

After the sample that found you guilty,

that's the A sample,

there should also be a B sample.

Yes, I think they did also the B one.

What got us close together were
the competitions we participated in.

it was just the two of us
going to competitions.

There were so many competitions
where we were inseparable

and I think this united us so much in
a friendship that lasts to this day.

Very little.

I don't know if there were any moments
when we talked about Sydney.

But in general, we never talked
about other competitions either.

But that was different.

was very beautiful,

I think it's a sensitive topic
for her as well.

if she would still
accept the medal today.

Maybe now, as an adult,
she would do things differently.

I think that Sydney is still
a very delicate topic for her.

I don't know

if as much as it is for me.

I asked her what this medal meant to her
and she said it's like all the others.

To me, it's a very special medal,

If you ask Simona, she will say she is.

In all honesty, I consider
this medal belongs to me.

I can't claim it's mine,
but it belongs to me.

We now witness
an astounding fall from grace

for a former gymnastics power house.

After four decades of winning medals
at every Olympics,

Romanian woman's team has failed
to qualify for the Olympics.

It's a really big surprise,
Leandra.

They've medalled at every Olympics
for the last four decades.

They've really become a part
of the Olympic furniture.

They've just not medalled,

I mean, in recent times,
they've taken gold as a team as well.

In '84, 2000, and 2004 as well.

So this really could be an end to an era
for Romanian gymnastics.

Such a shock for Romania.

As you saw on today's agenda,
we are going

to elect the president
of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation.

We have only one candidate,
Mrs Andreea Madalina Raducan.

So let's move to voting.

The new president
of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation,

elected with 42 votes,
is Andreea Madalina Raducan.

I accepted this challenge in a difficult
moment for the Romanian gymnastics

and in a special moment for me,
as a woman.

But this is a decision I undertake

that I hope will bring me
at least half of the joy

brought to me
by a lifetime in sports.

With all the goodwill I am capable of,
I will fight for gymnastics.

I am part of this system as well,
and I'm telling you openly that

I will not allow
any more public accusations,

exaggerations that prove to be baseless
most of the time.

I hope it won't come to that, but
if it does, we will also go to court.

I also won't tolerate any inappropriate
behaviour from the coaches.

I know most of you since I was
a gymnast, with some of you I trained,

and I hope
we will continue to work as a team.
