Okay so where were we

right Troy's team had put the 41 Fleet

line together for a photo shoot with

wheel hub magazine

now you may have noticed that the

Brooklyn wagon was just sitting on the

frame table while all of that was being

done well as you can guess the true Brad

Wright's fashion there was Zero downtime

while Rob was getting photos for the

spread the crew was on the wagon like

white on rice and a glass of milk on a

paper plate in the middle of a snowstorm

now I said the crew but where was Troy

you know that's a good question I'd love

to I'd love to know too but in the

meantime we got to get some get some

work done so he's out driving around

town well I mean the first place I would

start would be one of the any five gas

stations in town I have no idea probably

going to get a pop but he's been hinting

at us helping him out on this and since

we're at a stopping point over there

we're just gonna go ahead and jump in

and he might be avoiding it for now but

he'll be back after we're done how

pleasantly surprised he'll be when he

comes back and there's three extra

- people working on it we're working on
- his wagon

Before we jump back into work let's just

get reacquainted with this little

project

when it arrived this Brookwood wagon was

a beautiful Survivor with only 2 000

miles on it but with the original

chassis drum brakes three on the tree

and 135 horsepower straight six

it would be a huge stretch to call it a

hot rod but that didn't stop Troy from

- attacking it with the enthusiasm of a 20
- year old

So they started to modify the body to

fit the new chassis Adam cut the old

trans tunnel out hoping he wouldn't have

to put in a new one

and then they started to clean up the

engine bay by putting in a new firewall

as Troy fitted the body mounts

oh and I can't forget they dropped in a

new LSX with a big ass Turbo

Troy was hell-band on turning this slow

Survivor into an asphalt melting Beast

in case you cut away the old front wall

of the cargo area to accommodate the new

rear suspension in the chassis but he

had to walk away from it to get the 41

ready for wheel hub magazine but today

he is back on it even though they were

going for purely performance overlooks

these guys just can't help themselves

so Casey's handcrafted panel became a

- bit more of a piece of art than just a
- chunk of floor

Gets rather ornery when you start

putting bead rolls in it and big

stampings and things like that because

being stretched to extremes and shrunk

and you really have to understand how

the molecules move to get everything

back in line so the piece plays right

that's why Casey is hammering on this

piece of metal to get it straight after

he put it through its Paces to put the

shape in it the job is only going to be

as nice as the part you install so yeah

I know that it's I used to try and

wrestle this stuff in even with the

Distortion in it like I was joking with

you earlier weld it bend it around and

get attacked in there real quick you

know I'm trying to get it to hold itself

enough to get attack on it yeah I mean

looking good yeah you just really try to

get it as nice as possible by the time

it gets to the car because welding is

going to add a whole nother element of

distortion you're going to have to bring

that back out so it's almost like

Groundhog's Day you have a flat panel

you stamp it turn into a messy panel you

bring it back with a shrinker and you

weld it in it turns back into a messy

panel then you bring it back straight

it's just over and over again every step

of the way you got to kind of make it

flat bring it back to a good state so

just part of the part of the process

came back into the ring to finish up the

exhaust and Adam was able to get his

take on how his hours add up

I worked all day yesterday on that

that's a day and a half I get so half a

day the other day

but wait wait a second now you guys you

got four extra guys on this now so what

you're telling me I'm really good though

but you're I know that's what I'm saying

you're mad you're math you're I'm worth

your day your day is I'm worth Four Guys

each one of these guys I've earned that

I've earned it okay so four five six

forget it like I don't even know what

the math is that's like 15. I probably

got a week at least a week on my red car

now

with these guys we don't even need that

long no they probably don't need a week

that's that simple unless you keep

shoving them further outside simple

sheet metal stuff it's going to be 65

out today it's simple sheet metal it

could be nice this isn't even fancy

stuff just get her in there nice

all right all right

before we went on to weld one of the

pipes Rick was cutting the floor to

accommodate the frame and seat members

and as he feared

Adam got stuck with a trans tunnel now

this is like a necessity fabrication

you have to have a trans tunnel but

somebody really wants to do it I guess

I'll do it out of mind

at Red rides even when you draw the

Short Straw you guessed it they can't

help themselves

so did you just lock out on the firewall

there did you roll it back like that so

does it all right I rolled it back here

but there's actually a support piece on

the front side of the firewall uh that

tips back and we left that on the front

side it's like spot welded against here

for strength also on the floor we kind

of picked the point where the tunnel was

going to come out and I tipped all the

floor pieces up oh you did come up

against the tunnel as well so that

underneath it looks like it was stamped

to accept this transmission what about

this piece is this is like a grow two

point for you so you know what to do

here is that going to get like welded to

it or yeah partially this is this is the

shape that our drive shaft tunnel will

be we measured the distance between the

center line and the tail shaft here

where that universal joint sits and so

this is basically uh determined distance

away from that so that we have enough

room for that U-joint but also this is

tying together these braces for

underneath the seat in the front and

these did stop in here somewhere and

then it transitioned into this tunnel

portion now this is pretty strong area

of the floor just having that Arc in

there right when we grow taller and have

all these transitions in here this is

actually an incredibly strong part of

the floor and tying it in these braces

underneath like this is not really

necessary but it does add a little bit

of strength it does give us a grow two

point and so this will now be the shape

of the driveshaft tunnel from here back

even when they're not wild about it they

can't help but do their best

decided it was time to make the

Brookwood off the frame rack and that

took Alex hooking up the steering

linkage so it could find its way onto

the hydraulic rack and then the wheels

went on sort of these 16 cars are always

tough when you lower them and get a big

tire on there because the wheel well is

so short how are we looking in there

you're hitting the stud like the rim

yeah

wrong pattern yeah that's why is it

okay

there we go it did it it's these glasses

I gotta get new ones

so what happens if you get a flat tire

on the interstate there's a gun in the

glove box just blow your brains out

it's good advice

as soon as the transfer was made Alex

went straight in for more modifications

we're gonna make a bracket for the

firewall there that comes off the engine

so we can actually wire the engine when

it's out of the car this will simulate

the Cannon plug

the firewall back here let me see the

three holes

and we'll make a little bracket that'll

be fixed off the engine it'll come up

and go like however it is on the

firewall

and uh stay stationary so we can bolt

this to the engine

when we get it out and I can make the

harness outside the car rather than

crawling over the fenders

Alex was working on fabricating a new

home for the wires so they can keep a

clean looking firewall

nobody wants a pop the hood and see a

bunch of wires that lack discipline

got these military Cannon plugs that we

put in the firewall in order to uh

make life easier later on if for some

reason you have to take the engine out

you can just unhook the whole engine

harness from the car and not have to

literally

unhook each wire off the engine

like this will be the engine side of the

Canon plug and this will be where the

firewall is so when we make the harness

on the engine it'll actually come up and

- it'll it'll clock and actually plug and
- cam lock in place

Now that the car was free of the frame

rack and able to be lifted above us Troy

gave me a quick rundown on his progress

yeah we just did a little crossover here

and um got the manifolds on it but I

just did a uh three and a half in a

three and a half's little big to get

through the back so that I just switched

it to two two and a halfs and uh and

then you know a lot of these I've done

in the past where I don't want to choke

the thing because it's turbocharged but

I don't want it super loud you know we

just want to cruise in this thing so I

did the big 50 Series truck Muffler and

uh I think it'll have enough Volume Plus

it should be pretty quiet cut the ends

off put my own ends on it and I even cut

like a drive shaft little relief in the

top so it's got a little half moon in

the top so nice

um normally I don't do v-band clamps

anymore I do the triple slip stuff like

that here okay but I did the v-band just

because that way you can just take the

four hangers you can drop it straight

down otherwise you can't you know you

can't get it apart yeah so that's why I

did it that way and then two and a half

undertale pipes and then I went to three

inch in the back three feet of it just

for looks I don't think it'll matter but

uh should be pretty good like I said it

shouldn't be too noisy and worst case

here if it was too noisy for any reason

but I don't think it will be going

through the turbo we can always come

back here and

you know fish a resonator in back there

if we wanted to one thing we really try

to pay attention to an exhaust is crew

radiuses you know when we're cutting

through our radiuses it's not a 38

degree cut you know it's a 45 or it's a

90 or you know try to keep keep it that

way and if you just have a couple simple

rules of thumb that seems to play out

pretty well it adds a degree of I mean

difficulty to the process but it looks

so much better A lot of guys it's the

last thing they do you know the car's

all done and they're like okay yeah

let's do the exhaust now well now you're

absolutely limited to what you can do

with it you know now you're dealing with

what you have and you don't want to move

nothing because whether the chassis

painted or powder coated so it's an

absolute must that you do it in the

fabrication stage but you know you've

seen a lot of really nice cars in the

past you'll see it from a distance and

you see a exhaust hanging underneath it

yeah right now you go drive it and it's

the Rockers have six inch of clearance

but you tear the exhaust off because

it's got two so one thing too I know you

noticed it but we did the intercooler

right here for the turbo and one thing

was a concern from beginning just you

know you don't want to see any of this

stuff so we're able to package the Boost

tube you know yeah and fit them

underneath the the gravel guards or

whatever you want to call them so that

ended up packaging pretty well we did we

we came out of the turbo with a three

and then this is three and a half and

then it goes to four up inside so

the inner fenders uh add a modified them

for me to fit around the control arms

and we metal finished them so we can

just we'll just powder coat those powder

coats core support nothing fancy this

will look real tidy you know a lot of

guys are doing the uh us included in the

past the fake gold retro look under here

you know like you're trying to fake

somebody out but this that we wanted

this when you look under it's like yeah

it's pretty hardcore yeah you know we're

not trying to fake anybody or trick

anybody this is you know it is what it

is and then all the exhaust uh the

downpipe the snail the manifolds

everything will have the ink and I'll

wrap like we run on the race cars cool

so I mean when you look under you'll

know it's like oh yeah it's business

yeah yeah it's it's just the right

amount of everything it's not too much

it's not too little it's just all

mechanical looking this is what most

people wish was under their head when

they yeah and the balance is important

you know so yeah put the turbo there the

battery was normally there so obviously

I just moved the battery to this side

you know to keep this balance right yeah

and the way this is you know kind of

packaged with the power steering cooler

trans cooler blah blah and then we have

our our new Bosch electric Master sale

which is fairly big Works incredible

yeah so that's why I go back to making

the cover on the firewall like these old

car old cars may have for the heater

core area all it is is a pass-through

but now it balances it you know

otherwise it'd be you know that's there

and the firewall's flat yeah so it gives

it some depth to it so it kind of

balances out pretty nice and then your

big pipe here so we move the overflow

tank kind of down into that area cool so

there's no big voids anywhere pay a lot

of attention to that when we run the

4080 so it's a a little bigger yeah it's

big but it doesn't fail but no no

absolute best for this stuff there is no

other transmission we run these six

eight ten speed stuff and it's fine I

like them as well

um these are bulletproof and uh spacing

and everything just makes sense on them

yeah real yep one ton truck converter

let her eat but everything's done under

the dash I actually cut the cowl out of

the car to move the air conditioner up

so I cannot handle you know the

evaporator box sitting on your feet yeah

so I cut the cowl out moved it up four

inches so now the box is way up inside

and when you say cut in the cow out I

mean I think people should realize

that's a huge problem on these cars

really because you have that separate

void in there yep and it takes up a lot

of the under dash room but then you

can't poke a hole in it you can't Mount

anything yeah water will come right yeah

and then we just had to do a little one

panel in the back behind the rear end

just to scoot it back just a little bit

yeah on the back side there it gave us

about an inch more clearance

um

But that way we're able to retain

you know we're able to retain all of the

uh

You know the rear metal can go back in

there that folds up and everything and

this was a Brookwood so it's a cheap car

so it didn't have that has the brackets

for the rear seat but it doesn't have a

rear-facing seat so oh okay yeah so

that'll just be storage because I'm

going to run the stock tank in the wheel

well now that's cool um and you can put

the spare tire back actually we're going

to put it we'll put a small spare in our

pipe and then we're gonna run rear air

so we'll have a rear air unit in it and

hopefully I'll sneak the vents in the

headliner blowing down so

um it'll make it more enjoyable for the

people riding in the back seat you know

not burning up but Plus for your heavier

friends

the shopping the big boys

it's really cool to see Troy's evil plan

to convert a lethargic but perfectly

preserved old grocery getter into such

an unlikely high performance machine I

can't wait to shred the tires when it's

done

now I mentioned before that you can't

really swing a dead cat in here without

hitting an interesting car in this shop

and there's one here that was made by

someone who I consider the Godfather of

modern hot rods

he had j-96 Boyd built this car this is

one of the last ones to leave the shop

before it closed basically you know

somewhere back in that era I'm not

probably totally accurate but uh nice

car and uh

um customer of ours that we did a little

bit other work for bought it at an

auction so we've actually done quite a

bit of work on some of the old boy cars

Michael Anthony stuff I've done several

for him and Roger ritzau's got the Boyd

46 car yeah I remember that um so so

we've done quite a bit of repair work on

them over the years and I had a lot of

respect for Boyd and he obviously had

his own style you know it was just kind

of sleek cleaned off straightforward you

know kind of straightforward on the

engine and just built a nice car so all

the work that we've done in the past on

these things is just repairing them and

I don't want to change them much because

out of the respect to Boyd and you know

and he had a good looking car Timeless

this one here we have done a little bit

you know it was black and Chip silver on

top so we just repainted the top a

little darker and then it had it had one

it's a little John knockoff wheels on it

basically or boy Littlejohn and look

good but really dated the car so we kind

of try to you know we added the mirrors

it had the little painted Boyd mirrors

before yeah which are also kind of yeah

kind of Street Roddy so we we went with

them a little bit more nostalgic mirror

painted Wheels we got 36 Ford hubcaps

that go on all that yeah cool has tail

lights extensions now instead of just

frenched in and just little stuff we're

actually changing the interior also so

we're going to do a new top on it and

redo the interior just a little more

modern amenities and you know a little

bit maybe a little step above I guess

the dash the dash is quite a bit

different it had a little the little boy

Billet thing which was his style which

was nice but we went with a little more

retro style like kind of nostalgia

custom so just to fit in with today's

things without without changing it too

much and I guess the one major thing we

did do which I almost forgot about it

had a rumble seat in it so you gotta

climb on the fenders to get in it so so

it really killed no trunk space for him

you know so and Bob wants to drive the

car and stuff so we actually made a deck

lid for it and a rain gutter and

everything so now it's got a full deck

lid and these cars are rare I mean a 37

convertible as you know like the one we

chuckled Thunder that got stolen or hate

that name but Craig's 37 they got stolen

yeah uh what I was just trying to buy

the back of one of these to get a

Deckard and things and you just could I

mean if you bought a junk what it was 10

grand so we we just made the deck lid

and made the rain gutter but it's a lot

more useful now now it's got a full

trunk yeah I got a question I mean we're

always talking about George and he's

obviously a huge influence in the hot

rod world and I think he comes up just

about every episode but is this the same

Grille that we used in Craig's 37 yeah

that's the one that George paid for

originally Don Pilkington built them

yeah and uh George paid for all the

laser program to cut them all out and

all the layout originally and then Don

was selling them and uh yeah it's a nice

girl it's probably one of the best best

ones you can buy for this car for sure

it's all stainless steel so yeah that's

uh that's a Don Pilkington grill that

George originally held helped Don design

so a lot of crossover in this industry

for sure you know I guess it says a lot

we're able to work on these other

high-end Builders cars a lot you know I

think they see that we can maybe make

them work or they see us driving our

stuff or whatever just like the 33 here

you know that good customer of ours Matt

bought it and that was built in Canada

about six years ago won the Ford design

award and everything else and you know

it's an awesome car and we we actually

built the intake for it back then he

called and wanted one of them intake we

built for Rogers 32 and I'm like man we

made that on a band saw and a Bridgeport

you remember so I'm like I don't have

nothing else I'll pay I'd love to have

one so Lawrence we redid the stuff on a

CNC and we have a program for it now but

so we made the intake send them to them

back in the day and uh there was a huge

learning curve even on that trying to

get it I remember getting like the

equalization between the eight Stacks

individually yeah having a vacuum

chamber for the map signal was important

yeah yeah and Roger's car runs fantastic

to this day and it does and this one we

did a few little things that they missed

when we sent them up the intake and and

some pedal Arrangement stuff and just

make it a little bit more drivable for

Matt since he bought it but you know

like I said this is a sloanaker award

winner

um it was a Ford design Award winner I

had a lot of success in a short time so

you know there again we get to work on

another really nice car that we didn't

build you know and and we're you know

they they feel that we can maybe bring

it to that next little level of

usability per se so we're going to take

this thing out sometime yeah it'll be

fun it's hard to see out of it yeah like

all of them that's all of them that are

chopped that much exactly stay back from

the light you know doing all these

things right it's the price of looking

- that radical yeah but it's cool it's a
- nice nice car

Um

With everyone else occupied Troy went

ahead and brought in a long time friend

who may well be the best tuner around

Dale Cherry came to the 33 Ford and some

of the other cars in the shop running

perfectly

Dale Cherry has been tuning cars since

most of us were in diapers I mean this

guy picked up the ball and ran with it

back in the 80s when digital fuel

injection was first available to the

aftermarket his list of accomplishments

are long but one that's most notable for

me and really hits home was the fact

that he was one of the first guys to

have an eight second Grand National I'm

talking decades ago

it goes without saying that Troy's guys

are some of the most capable in the

industry but when you have resources

available to you like Dale Cherry it's

smarter to bring them in and let them do

the heavy hitting when it comes to

fine-tuning

now with the 55 what Dale discovered was

that the tune from the factory actually

was configured up blocks kind of like

looking at stairs now imagine Dale came

in and smoothed out the transitions

between the stairs to create a ramp

that's how he got the car running so

smooth this gets all that that

drivability now pulls it back in and

then once I got that back in there I

just trimmed up some of the uh the

fueling a little bit which like I said

the self learning stuff works fairly

well yeah yeah the next car on the Slate

was the track knows 33 Ford Alex was

kind enough to point out some of the

modifications that they had made so this

guy I guess somewhere along the lines

had seen Roger's car right in one of the

same type of fuel injection then it

ended up here and then you've you've

done a number of things to it yeah we

added Mufflers to it didn't have any

Mufflers or redid the exhaust all the

way back uh we pulled the

brakes apart and brake shoes for our on

backwards on three out of four wheels

corrected the pivot arm on the steering

over there Lawrence made a new arm and

so it doesn't hit the door when it's

turning left it doesn't go in front the

door

and then we fixed the throttle position

sensor to make it you know obviously

read accurately

because it was had a speedometer cable

that went around the corner inside the

car and and when you step on the gas you

can see the speedometer cable kind of

wind up because there was no housing or

anything on it so it's it's drivable we

just drove it you know I just drove it

10 miles to take it for a little ride it

rides pretty good I was surprised that

there's not really any bumps here and

well good it's not too bad about the

visibility out the windshield it's a

pretty border line these cars look so

Kick-Ass but I don't think people

understand that yeah if you get two

full-grown men in there you're shoulder

to shoulder they're cramped you know

yeah you have to look at how slit if you

set up straight in this car you could

see about 10 feet in front of the car

yeah and if you squat down then you can

see the pretty good distance but it's

Varsity in the stoplight

here

you're looking

so all that was left was to have Dale

get this thing running perfectly

now this is an especially challenging

car because of the Flathead not to

mention that it has an eight stack

injection on it the problem with eight

stack injection is it's really designed

for on or off throttle nothing in

between so to get it smoothed out to

where the car is drivable and has good

road manners is quite the challenge

they're both mechanical and tuning

given the experience Troy and his shop

has in making the intake manifold which

is one of now only two and Dale's

history of understanding how to tune

that they're probably the only team

together that could get this thing going

so the they hardly have any vacuum

because we have eight individual Runners

and they usually connect them together

with a you know usually vacuum lines in

a small little plenum this one has a

larger plenum area but there's it's a

flathead there's hardly any room yeah so

you can't get a plenum like your regular

carburetor so you're not you're gonna

the engine's gonna run the same same cam

all that stuff but you're just not going

to see that kind of vacuum so now that

cuts down the whole resolution of

everything so you're just tuning in a

small area so with different Management

Systems this has a big stuff three so

we're able to rescale our map side so we

can get some more resolution in it but

when you just tip the throttle it's open

in eight barrels and all the vacuum goes

away so it's low speeds is a challenge

being the creature of opportunity that I

am I offered to take Dale out on a drive

in this award-winning car so he could

assess the drivability

no selfish motives here

one thing I did get was a little bit of

Praise from Dale

now when I drive a car I like to almost

stall it when I leave a light rather

than over rev and tear the clutch up

yeah that sounds good

anyway it gave him a unique perspective

on getting some of the hardest parts to

- tune which is known as tip-in throttle
- or write off idle

Find driving skills he was able to

determine that his tune was indeed spot

on due to the fact that it performed so

well under the harsh conditions of my

- left and right foot trying to find
- balance

Now keep in mind that even with a proper

tune the 33 isn't the fastest car I've

ever been in but that's the point this

track knows beauty was built to be a

rolling work of art and it truly is and

now it can be driven and enjoyed without

all the nuances that usually come along

with a hot rod the annoying stuff like

not being able to drive it

so with that being said I'm gonna have

to get my speed fix when the chicane

comes back that's right the twin turbo

Legend itself is coming back for some

odds and ends and we've got permission

to go driving so you've got that and

much more to look forward to as we keep

you posted with the progress at rad
