A MODERN COED

the number of female students
in French universities reached 123,326,

representing 43% of all university students.

Thirty years earlier,
on the eve of WWII,

there were only 21,136,
less than 30% of the student body.

Today, girls are choosing to pursue
higher education in soaring numbers,

determined to catch up with the boys
as quickly as they can.

Pursuing a higher education
is now less of an adventure for girls,

less a change of pace, a pause,

a unique interlude in their lives.

The schoolgirl is a budding coed,

and the coed,
a grown-up schoolgirl.

The traditions of student life
have nearly died out,

but remnants survive,
like their eating habits,

despite the combined assault
of cafeterias

and other university food halls.

In legends of
the Latin Quarter of old,

the coed was a liberated woman

rebelling against
her family and hometown

to live on her own
in dingy Left Bank hotels,

whose clientele today is limited
to itinerants and tourists.

Today there are growing numbers
of universities in the provinces.

In principle, the University of Paris
is reserved for Parisians.

She's working.

She has exams at the end of the month.
She studies day and night.

In general,
coeds live with their parents,

and if they live
in the Latin Quarter,

it's only because
they were born there.

In the past, country girls
came to the city to study.

The city girl goes to school

The sciences deserted
their age-old home at the Sorbonne

to create, in 1958,

Awareness of her responsibilities

at home and at school
gives her strength,

and it's been noted
that academic success

is greater among married couples

than among singles.

The primary role of women at one time
was to conserve the values of the past.

Today, they are increasingly involved
in building the world of tomorrow.

A new field of activity
opens before them:

the laboratory.

Here women can fill a new role
for which they are well-suited

and which allows them to use
their talents to serve society.

Here women are often assigned
the role of assistants,

while men lead the research.

But since 1906,

when Madame Curie became
a physics professor at the Sorbonne,

there are more and more
exceptions to the rule.

about these results
