one of the greatest unexplained events

in Russia's history took place nine

students all under the age of 25 went

hiking in a remote wilderness in western

Russia called the Ural Mountains weeks

later their bodies were found mangled

beyond recognition all had suffered

massive internal injuries some of the

students were found partially clothed

the campsite had been destroyed perhaps

most perplexing investigators found one

set of footprints more than twice the

size of an average man's a warning what

you're about to see contains disturbing

images from the investigation into who

or what killed the Uyghurs viewer

in January 2014 explorer mike libecki

and the film four ventured into the

Russian wilderness where is it

they set out to solve a mystery that the

Russian authorities have never explained

armed with the hikers own photos and

journals and recently released evidence

did they capture their kill

but what starts as a murder

investigation

really

this was it this was like ban soon

becomes a hunt for the world's most

notorious creature the Snowman exists

to the deepest parts of the Siberian

wilderness

to catch the creature but even camera

before it strikes again

the Ural Mountains 16,000 square miles

of dense forests and hidden caves on the

Siberian frontier

it is one of the most desolate places on

earth and it has been haunted by an

unsolved mystery for fifty-five years in

January 1959 a group of college friends

set off on a 14-day mountaineering

expedition

their leader 23 year old Igor Dyatlov

led them into the vast wilderness but

the hikers never returned

after they were reported missing a

massive search-and-rescue operation was

launched

for weeks the search party combed the

mountainside until they discovered the

campsite and what they found was

horrifying

the hikers tent was found first it had

been abandoned but despite the sub-zero

conditions their winter coats and even

their boots were still inside something

happened that night that horrified the

terrified nine very experienced hikers

and it forced them to flee the town

almost a mile away at the edge of the

forest they found the first two bodies

they were found in just their underwear

beneath a tree the tree had broken

branches as high as 15 feet

and markings which suggests that the

hikers were climbing to escape something

several hours later three more bodies

were discovered along the exposed

mountain slope these were even more

baffling

they were found facedown in a straight

line between the forest and the tent the

positions of their bodies suggested they

were running for their lives two had

wounds on their hands and fists

suggesting a struggle with someone or

something

the remaining four hikers weren't found

until two months later their corpses

were half a mile away in the deepest

part of the forest

they were found partially clothed in a

ravine beneath four feet of snow

their bodies were crouched and

intertwined suggesting they had been

hiding

it took three days for the bodies to

thaw but the mystery only deepened when

they were examined the official autopsy

revealed horrific injuries to had

crushed ribs another a fractured skull

two others had internal injuries to

their organs and one was missing its

eyes the Soviet pathologist said no

human was strong enough to inflict the

bizarre crushing injuries yet the body

seemed to have been deliberately

mutilated the question is what caused

these injuries was it man was it natural

what was it the Dyatlov incident has

been called by some as Russia's JFK

because of the many conspiracy theories

it is generated in the 20th century for

the last half a century speculation is

run wide

secret government cover-up even aliens

the last photo taken by the hikers

before they died appears to show

mysterious lights in the sky

which some claim points to an alien

sacrifice

we're in history have you seen a case

where nine hikers have died the bodies

were discovered but yet we don't have

the answer to the events leading to how

they died after just four weeks the

Soviet government shut down the

investigation and to this day they've

yet to explain who or what killed the

hikers the only conclusion released to

the public is that the hikers died from

a compelling natural force I mean what

the hell is a compelling natural force

and what if it strikes again the Dyatlov

incident has remained unexplained for

over half a century but the release of

previously classified files was finally

allowed investigators to re-examine the

case

begin his investigation

he's a world-class climber and Explorer

with more than 45 expeditions to his

name if I went out on one of my

expeditions and for some reason I didn't

return I would want my family to know

what happened

mic first heard about the Dyatlov

incident on a climbing expedition in

2011 soon after he became obsessed with

the case

not knowing how these students died and

what happened is ultimate mystery and I

had to go find out what was going

now Mike is determined to try and solve

the Dyatlov mystery once and for all

he doesn't speak the language so he's

hired Russian journalist Maria clinic

OVA as a translator Maria is a

television journalist who has worked for

many large news networks but this is the

first time she has covered the Dyatlov

case this is a big story and as a

journalist for sure I wanted to help him

with this investigation even though it's

been 50 years or more it still shrouded

with secrecy there'd been a lot of

speculation about this case over the

years but no hard evidence what it

wanted was proved that's why I went back

to Russia to get the truth nothing

prepared me for what I was about to

discover

Mike and Maria begin their investigation

at the final resting place for the

hikers on the anniversary of the

incident a dwindling group of friends

and family have been paying tribute to

their loved ones for the past 55 years

and still without answers it was really

crucial that I went to this memorial

service I wanted to see if I could meet

family or friends anyone that could tell

me anything about this case after the

ceremony we met a woman when you the

hikers when she was young and what she

told us was horrifying

the woman was best friends with one of

the hikers ludmila dubinina we were

studying together on one on the same

most gruesome condition of all the

hikers she was one of four bodies found

hiding in the ravine it was later

revealed to her friends and family that

when her body was found her tongue was

missing when I found out one of the

students was missing a tongue

by an avalanche something ripped out the

tongue of this woman you can use no

I don't know what happened but something

very unusual the net unexpected

I knew there were regular young people

who wanted to have fun a bunch of guys

and two girls setting off into the

wilderness on the adventure of a

lifetime they had no idea this was going

to be their final journey the hikers

started their journey at the foothills

of the Ural Mountains their diary said

how happy they were the weather was good

and the wind was with them they planned

on reaching the peak in seven days

after hearing that lyudmila's tongue had

been ripped out I realized there was a

mystery here much larger than I could

imagine

Mike and Maria have arranged to visit

the Dyatlov foundation an organization

dedicated to preserving the memory of

the hikers

they're met by Yuri Koon Civic the

president of the foundation he has

arranged a meeting with the last living

eyewitnesses from the search party who

first discovered the hikers bodies

the tent when they told me something

intrigued by these large mysterious

they might belong to something not human

in 1959 a group of hikers went missing

in the Ural Mountains

weeks later they were found dead their

frozen bodies had sustained terrible

injuries including crushed ribs a

fractured skull gouged eyeballs and one

woman was missing her tongue suggesting

that they had sustained a vicious and

prolonged attack the pathologist would

later say that the injuries were so

vicious

no human was strong enough to inflict

them

but the Soviet authorities soon shut

down the investigation now explorer mike

libecki and journalist maria clinic OVA

are reinvestigating the case he's

discovered that something forced the

hikers to flee their tent and

eyewitnesses reported strange footprints

much larger than a man's at the crime

scene

could they be the key to solving the

mystery known as the Dyatlov incident

Mike and Maria's investigation has led

them to the Mansi settlement of Oshima

I knew the Mansi people were the prime

suspects in this case so naturally I had

to go find had to go see if they knew

anything the Mansi are an indigenous

tribe who have survived in the Ural

Mountains since 500 AD there are very

isolated tribes they're not trusting the

outside society in the 1930s uh Nancy

shaman reportedly murdered a geologist

to add trespassed on their land

so in Soviet police began investigating

the Dyatlov incident the Mansi came

under suspicion it was thought that they

had a religious site or sacred ground

and the Dyatlov hikers had stumbled upon

it and paid the ultimate price with

their lives did the Mansi tribe murder

the college students was it their

footprints at the crime scene on the

second day of their trip the hikers were

around 25 miles from the mountain pass

their diary confirms they entered Mansi

territory where they had a heated

confrontation with a local tribe

the hikers photos showed signs carved

into trees which proves they entered

Mansi territory forbidden to outsiders

when the students actually pass through

this area there was a confrontation

between them and the Mansi people where

is everybody

I'd also heard rumors that the Mansi

people have actually killed people for

trespassing on their land

actual ritual murders of some kind I had

no idea what to expect from these people

Mike and Maria are at a remote Mansi

settlement hidden from the outside world

by the dark Ural forest they're hoping

the tribe is willing to tell their side

of this dark story

Mike really wanted to meet someone but

there was no one around the first few

houses I knocked at nobody answered it's

locked

their village was sort of like a ghost

town maybe they were just ignoring us

right here

it was pretty hairy out there

here Mike finally I found someone

willing to talk to us

they were the prime suspects in the

original investigation I needed to ask

investigators dropped all charges when

they finally realized that the Mansi

weren't harming the hikers they were

warning them

day three the hikers began their ascent

through the dense forests towards the

mountain of the Dead their diary says

they followed a trail where someone or

something was hunting deer

to meet a man C hunter who can verify

his story she is the last known eye

witness he really wanted us to believe

not only about the Mansi people's

innocence but about how they would have

warned the students to not go to the

mountain of the dead after a 3-hour trek

through the forest they arrived at the

Mansi hunting grounds

so of course I wanted to meet this

person little did I know the information

I'd get would change the entire course

of this investigation

a creature known locally as the mink

I began ask myself you know what could

this thing be so I went online to

research the mink and I found this video

this is a video from a hiker in Siberia

you can see this creature sort of half

man/half bear but sort of man-like

creature walking it was something like

really closely you can hear them calling

mink

it looks like what I would call a

Sasquatch or a Bigfoot or even the Yeti

the Yeti is just one of many names for

the large hairy creatures said to live

in remote wildernesses around the world

in North America they're called

Sasquatch in Sumatra the Arang pendick

and in Russia they have many more local

names for centuries in Russia these

creatures have been have been sighted

have been described very very large but

all of these tend to get clumped

together and often refer to generically

as the Yeti the fact that indigenous

Russian people thousands of miles apart

have described creatures with the exact

same characteristics lend support to the

idea that they exist there's more to

this than simply folklore there seems to

be a biological basis these creatures

are reported in areas where the habitat

would support a large primate of this

type dense forests remote mountainous

regions the northern Urals where the

students were found is one of the most

remote locations in the world a perfect

spot for a Yeti to survive I'm confident

that there is some form of creature

existed today

I guess the big question for me was had

the students encounter this mate

on day four the students struggled

through ten miles of dense forests

making camp just before nightfall it is

here if they started to realize that

they were not alone

Mike and Maria have traveled to Moscow

to search for more evidence for the

existence of the mink otherwise known as

the Russian Yeti I wanted to know if

these things really existed and so

further research took me to this guy

called Igor bird so he's the world's

leading expert on the Russian Yeti even

has his own Yeti Institute he's

dedicated his entire life to search for

this creature 73 year old Igor Bert Seb

is the head of the International Center

of Holman ology an academic Institute

devoted to studying the Russian Yeti

he's been gathering evidence on this

creature since the 1970s Igor do you

know anything about this make one of the

local names of the creature which we

call Yeti is there any evidence that

shows these creatures exist in the Ural

Mountains there are a lot of evidences

they leave the footprints which confirm

their existence for example this one

they have bigger foot than human and

short neck almost without neck

please so this footprint this is a Yeti

yes we have mountains of evidences but

nobody wants to see them first of all

the footprints there are everywhere for

last 50 years they file signs of Yeti

confirmed by reports of eyewitnesses

there are about 5,000 he had over 5000

eyewitness testimonies from people that

had seen this creature that is a huge

number of sightings for a creature that

supposedly doesn't even exist

the reports include many sightings from

the Ural Mountains where the hikers died

I asked Igor if you'd learn anything

from these Yeti sightings if there were

any patterns of common behavior do these

creatures make any noises do they make

any sounds they can we still even they

don't like when the man whistling he

actually said that these whistles these

sounds that they make are really common

if you go to the forest door twist oh

don't whistle because maybe this Yeti

will come and punish you

I was not expecting this answer then he

said that there was something else and

also they can kill deer with just

breaking his neck

but they prefer to eat soft flesh though

so soft like lung heart liver when he

said they liked soft flesh it made me

think again about the Miele a young girl

hiker who was found without a tongue

could this be further evidence that the

hikers encountered the Russian Yeti

everything he told me confirmed

everything Albina said about the mink

the missing tongues the whistling noises

deposed a totally new question did this

thing kill the hikers Igor do you have

any idea how powerful these creatures

are there they could kill the bear we

have two cases when they just turn apart

bear with

the hikers sustained vicious injuries

that the Soviet pathologist stated could

only have been inflicted by something

stronger than if you

could they have been inflicted by a

Russian Yeti so based on size and

massiveness the Russian yet it would be

of immense strength here's the cast from

Russia it's very large and dimensions

nearly 16 inches in length that confirms

its giant it's 78 feet in height

with legs over four feet long and agates

similar to a human or upright gorilla

the Russian Yeti could have a top speed

of over 45 miles an hour it's been

described as having four inch claws for

shredding razor-sharp teeth and

incredible strength imagine another

feature as powerful per pound as a

chimpanzee

and Zetas five times the strength of a

human

extrapolated up to eight and a half feet

in high this animal would be a lethal

predator capable of dispatching a human

in very short order

Igor told me about this

government-funded Yeti expedition and it

happened to be in the same time period

as when the students died the only known

records of this expedition are stored in

this archive in Moscow

deputy director arena Elena has

unearthed a file that proves the Soviet

government set up a specialist unit in

1958 it was called the snowman

Commission its mission was to capture a

Yeti alive I'm speaking the producer

Lucia time we just Illumina Baroody

file proves that the expedition took

place but the Snowman Commission never

released any of their findings one of

the dates of these documents says here

that the Commission was liquidated in

Jenner in 1959 January 1959

that was the same month that the

students went on their expedition and it

wasn't just the Soviets who were hunting

the Yeti a letter uncovered from the

u.s. embassy dated the same year proves

the US government also believed the

creature was about to be found

so why did the Soviet government shut

down their own Yeti hunt at the same

time the hikers were in the Ural

Mountains and why do so many files

related to the expedition remain

classified I guess the big question for

me was had the students encounter what

the government was actually looking for

these right here I was about to find out

Moscow investigating the deaths of nine

Russian hikers

he's collected eyewitness reports and

unearthed footage of a large unknown

creature set to roam the area and

discovered the Soviet government shut

down a Yeti hunt at the exact same time

did the government know the Yeti was

there Maria has received new footage

from an anonymous source who claims it

will transform their investigation at

that stage the evidence was really

starting to build up but I didn't really

have solid proof

on their fifth day the hikers were just

18 miles from the mountain of the dead

around this time 22 year old Yuri Yudin

left the group and headed back into the

forest alone

except for more than 50 years nothing

seems to in April 2013 the Detlef case

made headlines yet again the news was

about Yuri Yudin

the hiker who set off into the forest

alone just days into the trip he fell

ill and turned back while the other nine

students continued to their deaths

Yuri survived an expedition that ended

in nine gruesome deaths was passed away

he removed another 76 I was really

disappointed not to get to speak with

your uten before he died but you'd

recorded some information on a tape

before he passed away this information

was incredible this is the only known

footage of Yuri Yudin discussing the

case it was recorded on his deathbed in

2013 in 1959 udin was asked to formally

identify the students belongings whilst

doing this he noticed something that

seemed out of place

this military boot cover is a very

specific thing it's only used by

soldiers at that time the boot cover

Yuri found is known as an AB matka in

Russian in the 1950s you had to be in

the Soviet Army or the KGB to get issued

one and Yuri said that none of the

students had any of these with them the

finding is startling somehow the Soviet

military reached the crime scene before

the search party yet there was no

official record of any military presence

in the area where the hikers died

begging the question was there a

military cover-up for me the big

question was why were the military there

mike wants to view the original

government files to see if they reveal

more detail about the crime scene since

1959 they've been sealed in the state

archive in Yekaterinburg it took me

months but eventually we could access to

the files

able to see this kind of information

pretty extraordinary whoever wrote this

file accidentally left evidence that a

cover-up took place in 1959 six of

February but the students they weren't

even reported missing until 15 so 16th

of February this file was open 10 days

before anyone officially reported the

hikers missing it proved someone got to

the crime scene before the search party

I mean this was proof that Yuri Yudin

the tenth hiker was right the military

had to have gotten there first

the file also has photos and diagrams of

the hikers tent forensic evidence

confirms that the holes were definitely

made from the inside and that there were

multiple small horizontal holes and all

were positioned facing the forest

whatever they were scared of must have

been lurking in the woods these holes

were lookout holes they needed to see

outside maybe they were looking out

towards someone something that was

stalking them is this proof that the

hikers were being hunted watching out

for a Yeti Mike and Maria find some

classified photos that add further

evidence to the theory

could this be what cuffed a lot was

there were photos in this file of what

these two search and rescuers described

these footprints they talked about could

the military have made these boot prints

it doesn't look like a boot track and

one of them's got a strange sort of

narrow heel the second print you can

kind of see the shape of a foot with

almost a big toe outline the shape and

size of these footprints seem to match

the Yeti tracks identified by other

experts the students were actually found

barefoot but these footprints obviously

did not belong to them any footprints

they made would have been small and

these footprints were huge but the final

revelation from this file is perhaps the

most terrifying one of the items left in

the tent was a piece of paper written by

one of the hikers just before the attack

it includes just one chilling sentence

it says

now we know this no woman exists right

in front of me written by the students

at the mountain of the Dead

the snowman lives this incredible new

evidence

leads Mike and Maria on a quest into

deepest Siberia to find solid proof what

let's go that the Russian Yeti

is still out there

in mysterious circumstances now Mike and

Maria have found evidence they could

have been killed by a Yeti

an official government file describes a

fragment of paper found in the hikers

tent on which the students wrote the

Snowman lives the snowman lives

Mike and Maria have gone back to the

hikers photos to search for evidence

that something was stalking them the

biggest question for me at this point

was why were the students so sure the

Yeti exists the students were just a

day's walk from the mountain of the dead

when they stopped in the dense forest

as Mike and Maria examined the pictures

they notice that they take a strange

turn we went through all of the photos

that the hikers had taken we noticed a

series of photos taken of the forest we

couldn't understand why

but then we found it the following image

is one of the last photos taken by the

hikers it is being shown on television

for the first time

when I saw this photo this was it this

was like van it's dark it's big this

sort of half-man creature of the forest

lurking through the trees it chilled me

to the bone I can't really tell how big

it is

but it could be eight feet tall

aside from its sheer size the figure has

a muscular hunched posture different

from a man and the head appears to be

disproportionately large compared to its

body

the head just kind of sits on the

shoulder it's kind of this kind of whole

Koosh creature and it doesn't really

have a neck all the research I've done

yetis don't have a neck and they have

short neck almost without neck

could the photo taken by the hikers

really be a Russian Yeti

this is what they saw this is why they

wrote down the Snowman exists

they'd captured it on camera there are

many theories on what kind of creature a

Yeti actually is some experts believe it

could be related to an ancient ape

called gigantis Pittacus Gigantopithecus

was a species of giant ape that existed

during the ice ages during the

Pleistocene

fossils of its jaws and teeth suggested

could have grown up to 15 feet tall

given the dimensions as extrapolated

from the jaws and teeth its foot would

have been enormous

fossils found in China Vietnam and India

suggest this animal died out 30,000

years ago but some believe its

descendants could have survived to

remote areas of Russia to this day it's

very possible that Gigantopithecus

rather than going extinct has continued

has survived into the present

and is the source of sightings today of

giant hairy hawk

many people claim to have caught the

Yeti or Sasquatch on camera the most

famous was the Patterson Gimlin film

shot in California in 1967 showing a

creature beside a creek from my vantage

the Patterson Gimlin film is extremely

credible the footprints were well

documented I am convinced that this is

an authentic piece of film footage of an

unrecognized primate in North America

the creature in the Patterson Gimlin

film has the same hunched posture as the

figure in the Dyatlov photo since 1967

there have been thousands of sightings

in February 2007 this video was shot on

a cell phone in the Rocky Mountains in

Colorado the suspected Bigfoot moves

quickly with a characteristic loping

gait and it's the same size as the

figure in the students photo many

believe these creatures are elusive by

Nature

and that is why recorded images of the

Yeti are always distant and poorly

focused but was the hikers photo blurred

for a more sinister reason cameras back

then in the 1950s they didn't have

autofocus it was clear this photo was

taken really fast very hastily like it

was a desperate photo

it seemed like

it was talking to students was the photo

taken while the students were fleeing

were they running for their lives I had

to ask the question did they capture

their killer on

to authenticate the picture Mike returns

to the Dyatlov foundation to meet with

uri Quinn civic I needed to be a hundred

percent certain it came from their

camera from their expedition URI has

kept the negatives of these photos in a

locked safe for decades there was only

one way we could be sure we had to check

to see if that image was in the original

negatives

could this really be the only known

photographic image of a Russian Yeti no

doubt it's 100% real it's been locked in

a safe ever since I mean you can see all

of the negatives together they're not

cut up they're one unit and this

particular photo is right there in the

negatives

the order of the negatives shows this

picture was one of the last images on

the students film taking just one day

before they died the image of this

for the most recent Yeti sightings in

Russia what I found was startling this

video was taken in 2011 on a remote

mountain range in Russia a group of

hikers were on a break when they

captured this footage of the creature it

moves really quickly

the humanoid like creature matches the

has a similar posture

sort of no neck kind of head just kind

gait is the same as other sightings to

the recent accounts they pointed to one

cave in Siberia that's where I was going

the cave is situated in a dense mountain

rage in the komarovo region it's become

the Yeti sighting hotspot of Russia

before it made headlines in 2011 there

was little known about the yetis varied

habitats

but then experts found footprints in one

of the tunnels there is what seems to be

and a hair that could not be identified

where he finds what appears to be a yeti

nest and that's when I heard

there was definitely something there I

don't know what I heard was it a Yeti

but it disappeared

what I don't understand is why it's

contact all of these sightings suggest

that the Yeti is getting closer to

people

yet no one has been attacked so why

would a Yeti attack the students

Institute to find out if there were any

attacks ever recorded this report

of yetis attacking people but there were

after eight hours they finally reached

the place where the Dyatlov hikers set

up camp on their final night alive it is

in this place that the students

mutilated bodies were found

so this is the mountain of the dead

this is one of the most remote extreme

cold and tense just crazy places that

I've been to where anything could happen

you could feel that there was no one

else out there miles and miles the

atmosphere scared me according to the

GPS their tents were found right over

there

Mike sets up a camp a mile from the tree

line on the slope of the mountain just

as the hikers had done

being in this location really brought

home to me just how terrifying it was

for them after fleeing the tent the

hikers ran a mile into the forest and

sought refuge under a tree then

something happened to force them to

scatter

that may have caused the students deaths

during their investigation Mike and

Maria have learned details of the

Russian yetis behavior that will help

them hunt it down I was gonna need some

bait a local hunter he gave me a pig

it really wasn't what I was expecting

but it was gonna have to do

Mike's arranged for the hunter to

provide armed backup I asked him to

stand near the tree line with a loaded

gun just in case but that didn't make me

feel safe

to enrage the Yeti Mike plans to

recreate the same conditions from the

night the students died I wanted to

provoke a Yeti and if these bright

lights provoke the Yeti

hopefully these flares would do the same

thing okay somewhere safe

nothing
