It's not fun in
the car when you're

driving in those conditions.

That is not enjoyable.

It's extremely risky.

It's extremely uncomfortable.

You either step up and extract
every ounce of performance

out of your entire being,
or you give up, cave in,

go around in circles,
and make up numbers.

I've always been incredibly
motivated to choose the former.

It's very hard to
describe to somebody

what you get from driving
a racing car at the limit.

It's about a set of emotions
and a set of feelings.

The feeling that you
get driving the car.

The feeling that
you get competing.

Working with your team to
maximize what you have.

That's kind of all unbeatable.

When I got to the
end of the weekend,

I wanted to know in my
heart that I'd given 100%.

And the feeling
that comes with that

is actually what is the drug.

It's what's the motivator.

I still want to go as
fast as I've always done.

I still want to put
the car on the edge.

I still want to bang
doors with people

or go wheel to wheel with them.

I know I can't
replace motor racing

with anything else in my life.

When that goes away,
I'm not sure how else

you could replace that.

That's the first time
you've been out there

in a competitive environment,
where the lap times actually

count.

Right.

And you were in at the deep end,
because you were the second car

out the pits, with quite a lot
of cars that left behind you.

Right.

Hindsight's an easy thing.

It's done.

You qualified.

You are where you are.

Right.

The most important thing now is
just to think about tomorrow.

Think about the race, OK?

And what I really want
you to think about tonight

is procedurally, when you're
going to come in the pits.

If you come into a busy pit
lane, the way that you come in

and the way that
you park is going

to be absolutely critical
toour ability to service the car.

And to be honest, a lot of
that will be on you in the moment.

There's no question.

Sitting on the grid at
Daytona, the first round

of the championship, with
all the people there.

It's easy to allow
that to affect you.

When I went on the grid and
talked to Frank in the car,

and I looked into his
eyes, in his helmet.

I knew he was not in the right
frame of mind for the job

that he was about to do.

The immediate feeling is one
of letting the team down.

The fact that Andrew and Robin
aren't going to get in the car.

The fact that the
team worked incredibly

hard to give us a great car.

And I made a mistake, and
screwed it up for everybody.

Critically, from a
technical point of view,

he just turned the
car in a little bit

early, which put him
at a shallow angle

at the apex of the corner.

But we're talking about
over 100 miles an hour.

And now as he tracked
through the corner,

he found himself
running out of road.

[brakes squealing]

What's really important
is you go back,

and you look at the
build-up to that.

We've got to
approach the weekend

with the right mentality.

[car engine sounding]

There's a lot of
things we don't...

What do you want to do?

In today's environment, I would
have been diagnosed as ADHD.

And I would have been put on
Ritalin or some other drug.

Instead, I had to learn to cope.

And I think that is
actually an advantage.

I can immerse myself in
anything and everything.

As soon as you get
in the car, there's

no time for external thoughts.

It's the most focused
that I ever am.

And it's the only
time in my life

that all the noise
just goes away.

I was in my 40s when I
really started racing.

And I'm now 61.

As a club racer that's won
championships, and things

like that, you almost
don't know what

you don't know when you get into
the highest level of the sport.

This is my first year
racing at this level.

[music playing]

Immediately, you have
that sinking feeling.

You've just had
this terrible news.

In that moment, all I wanted
to do was just walk away.

It was very obvious at
the beginning of the year,

he was struggling.

In the first three
races of the season,

he had fairly major
incidents, which

resulted in our inability
to then turn that

into a race result.

[music playing]

In those first 3 races, clearly,
he had a very difficult time.

And we all had a difficult time
as a result of that, as a team.

Everybody started
to question what

we were doing, why
we were doing it,

were we doing the right thing?

But in fairness to
Frank, he didn't waver

in terms of his commitment.

Lesser people would have found
it very easy to walk away.

[car engine sounding]

OK, can you hear that, when
you picked up the throttle?

Yeah.

Did you hear that?

Yeah.

No.

Wait, wait, wait, wait.

Get rotation, then power.

OK, there's some time there.

There's some time in
these two corners.

And I wouldn't do
anything any different.

Where you've gotten to
now is a big step forward.

Don't get greedy.

This is now your new baseline.

Keep doing what you're doing.

Don't change that.

For you to move forwards, you
have to prioritize one thing

at a time in one corner.

You have to prioritize.

You can't just
gain time by going:

"I'm going to brake later.

I'm going to carry more speed.

And I'm going to get
to power earlier."

That's not how this works.

You need to go out there
with a priority in your mind

in that corner, and
that's your priority.

I'm going to drive the
same on the way in.

I'm going to brake
at the same point.

I'm going to roll
the same speed in,

but I'm going to try and
pick up the power earlier.

And if you focus your
mind on that one thing,

there's every chance that
you're going to go out,

and you're going to gain
some lap time because of it.

We're in a series where you
can put 2 of the highest level

pros in the car, which
means that I'm qualifying

against guys that have been
doing this for 10 years

or guys that grew
up in Go-Karts.

Something fell into my feet.

What was going on with that?

It's the defrost duct.

The plastic defrost duct,
it fell down into his feet.

So I'm pissed off, but
understand why I'm pissed off.

I'm pissed off, because
when we had a problem,

we had no idea how to
figure it out and fix it.

And it was something simple.

And as a result, we're
at the back of the grid,

and the guy didn't
even do any timed laps.

And as I said, it's
the underlying issues

that are beneath
all of that, that

are what upsets me about it.

So I just think
that everybody just

needs to fucking pull
their finger out of their arse

and realize that yes,
we have limitations.

But if we're going to
perform at a better level,

and improve where we
are, and go forwards,

then we're going to have to
pull together and operate as one.

Let's get to the bottom of
whywe looked like a fucking circus

out there.

Because none of us on
an individual level

are circus people.

We're all...

We've been at the
top of our games.

We know how to fucking perform.

So there's no reason for
us all to pull together and be

a circus, other than we
have a lack of process

or a lack of clarity
on what we're

going to do in the moment.

So we need to figure out
what went wrong and fix it.

I want that to be done
in an unemotional fashion.

To win a motor race is an
impossibly difficult task.

There's so many factors that
you have to consider just

to win one race.

The performance of the car.

The reliability of the car.

The ability of the drivers
to keep the car on the track,

to go forwards, to race,
to not have contact.

Your fuel strategy.

Your fuel economy.

When to make your pit stops.

When to do your driver changes.

The weather.

The more you look
at it, you realize

that to actually put it all
together and get a race win

is impossibly difficult.

It's probably the
hardest situation

that you'll find yourself in.

Communicating between
the pits and the car,

when there's inclement
weather coming through that's

likely not going to
last for very long.

Trying to combine those
views, whilst in the meantime,

the driver's trying to
keep the car on the track.

There's a hell of a lot
going on in that situation.

It's part of the thrill
of the whole game.

In truth, nobody actually
cares about anybody other

than who's won the race.

That's the only team
that get any credit.

They get to stand on the
podium, on the top step.

They get to spray the champagne.

They get the interviews.

They get the TV time.

They get all the messages of
support and congratulations.

And everybody else
is commiserating

and talking about how they
could have done better.

It was very obvious
to me that we

didn't function effectively
enough in the pits

to get the job done
and win a race.

I was determined to
make a change to that.

One of the great life
lessons that I learned

was following a prolonged
period of low time in my life,

when I couldn't get my
racing career moving.

I had really exhausted
all of my avenues

and all of my possibilities.

I literally did not
have enough cash

to go and put gas in my car.

And once I'd gotten to this
point where I was shit or bust,

I really questioned where
I was going with my career.

But on this particular
day, I was walking back

through the paddock to my car.

And I was still in my race
suit, but everybody had gone.

And I was kind of like
the only guy there.

I'll never forget.

I stopped, and I soaked
in, in that moment,

all of the experiences
that I'd had

over the previous several
days, and the feelings,

and the emotions that
had gone with that.

And in a moment, I
captured that in my mind.

And I thought, there
is nothing else for me.

This is it.

There's no point in looking for
something else, because this

is it.

He will see the green
flag first as he

comes through the final corner.

The pace car peels
off into the pit lane.

Fabulous sight as these
GS cars head to the line!

The green flag waved.

[car engines sounding]

We're going to get a yellow.

There's a couple cars out.

Frank, you're doing a
really good job out there.

I know it's hot in
the car, and I know

you're getting a bit tired.

Just keep digging, and try to
keep as consistent as you can.

Being in that metal box for
that period of time on a hot day

is quite a lonely experience.

It's very noisy.

It beats you up physically.

Every metal surface you
can touch is roasting hot.

And you're roasting hot.

Your heart rate increases,
increases, increases.

And finally, you're just
overwhelmed by the heat.

But in all of that, you've
got to try and manage

your heart rate.

And manage your breathing.

And more importantly,
your mental state.

Because that's what allows
you to keep your focus

and get the job done.

That's a really good strategy.

It is an absolute battle

and I love that.

You're just feeling enormous
pressure in that moment

not to make a mistake.

That's where you can choke.

It's just a complete admission
of failure, isn't it?

I normally get this sort
of emotional comedown

after the race and suddenly just
feel overwhelmed with emotion.

It's hard to describe
where it comes from.

I can't really
describe how I felt.

It was nothing like I've
ever experienced before.

Woo!

Oh my god!

It's one of the
most meaningful wins

that I've ever had
in my entire career.

Where the team was,
where the name has been.

To get the first win for
the team and the name

of the team...

It means everything.

This team means
everything to me.

When you get back to the pits
after winning a race like that,

you feel the energy and the
emotion from all of them

collectively.

That can be quite
overwhelming in the moment.

When you get the result then,
when you get the success,

it just somehow vindicates.

It's like... I don't know.

It's just... I can't even put
that bit of it into words.

I don't know.

I don't think it's the
outside recognition I've ever

really been that fussed about.

The interaction you've had with
the fans around the racetrack

and with your crew, that's
actually what really matters.

Sometimes, I push the guys.

And sometimes, I don't thank
them in the way that I should,

or make the effort to make them
feel as valued as I actually do

feel about them.

When I feel like I've proved
to the guys that I can hang on,

and I can grind it out,
and I can get a result.

That, in a nutshell,
is my thanks to them.

That's my demonstration
of my commitment.

I like that responsibility.

There was a lot of work
that went into this program.

We've been working on this
really for arguably 3 years.

And to finally get here,
with Frank especially,

in his first season...

He's had a very difficult
start to the season.

That puts a lot of
pressure on him.

But he's a true sportsman,
and he's a team player.

And he hasn't
wavered his support.

And he's focused his
mind on getting better.

And I've worked
very hard with him,

and he's worked very
hard to get better.

And I think you saw the
results of those efforts.

And hats off to him, because
he's done a mega job.

I've never driven this track.

So Robin and I came
here in a rental car

and drove around to
show me the track.

We went pretty slow.

Anyway, but then I showed
up here with the Camaro,

and I've never
been on this track.

And it's a pretty
daunting track.

To be at this point
and to actually

win a race at this
point, I think,

is a tall order and an
amazing accomplishment.

it, which is always good.

All we had was a table.

And we went out and
bought a TV so we could like,

watch the timing and
scoring and stuff.

When you have the good
fortune to do something

like we do in
motorsport, there are

people watching that who care.

And there are people watching
that who look up to you.

You have the ability
when you're competing

to inspire people to a degree.

And it's not just
about signing their hat

and giving them their hat back.

It's about taking
time with them.

That can captivate
a young imagination.

And that can actually give
direction to somebody's life.

Those moments don't really
leave you, to be honest.

All you can hope for is that
you have not been wasteful

of your opportunity.

I am going to race in
IMSA when I grow up.

When I was your
age, I was walking

around talking to
drivers, too, and then I

drove in IMSA, right?

So that can happen.

I want to drive in IMSA like
howDylan Murry did, where he's 17,

and he's driving.

Dylan's a great guy.

His daddy raced.

I raced against his daddy,
and now I race against him.

Yeah.

Yeah, Dylan's
driving really well.

He's going to be a
star of the future.

When you start racing,
he'll be an old man!

So you can beat him
when he's an old man.

You'll be the young gun.

Hang on, I'm doing a test.

You're probably putting

All my complaining.

When he got out, he
thought about it again.

He thought the car was pretty
good, ready to go race.

And that's what they told me.

That's why I went and
talked to him out the door,

before you could get in his head
and tell him how great it was.

Oh yeah, it always does that.

That's normal.

You just have to adapt.

So yes.

So should we go, just
run through it quickly

from the beginning?

I think my first complaint
was the car didn't

ride the curbs very well.

Same thing that
he described in 4.

I'm using 2nd through
there the whole way.

But it's the same thing.

You feel like the
car should just

remain in a steady
state of push,

but then all of a
sudden, the back

just kind of comes... you have
a little, quick correction.

It's not a big slide.

It doesn't feel like wheelspin.

it just feels like the platform
gives up or something, late.

So I've got more
of a push to loose.

Through the uphill
is mostly just push.

There's a big TC
cut in the crest.

It cuts the engine
completely out.

Well, that's why...

Can we do anything about that?

Well, no, and that's why I'm
trying to run as little TC

as possible.

Now that being said, over a
run and green flag running,

I think we'll be very strong.

But where we're maybe
going to give up,

and where we need
to be careful is...

Yeah, exactly.

Restart.

The ability to rotate the car.

To get inside
somebody off a corner.

To go to power.

Because that's where
we're struggling anyway.

Because if we get
stuck behind people,

we're going to be a bit
screwed, to be honest.

Because I still don't think this
car, even as fast overall as it

is at the moment, I don't think
it's a very raceable car still,

in terms of ability
to pass people.

Yeah.

Let me get these
guys going on this.

I was concerned...

... that if we stopped under
green, we would go a lap down,

and we wouldn't be able
to get our track position back,

once it went yellow.

So, that's exactly
what happened.

We stopped at the wrong time.

It's quite a difficult
pill to swallow,

because the car was
clearly fast enough to win.

And we were in a position
where I think we could have won.

So I feel like it's a
bit of a wasted opportunity.

But you cannot make mistakes
at this level and win races.

In the moment, you
don't necessarily

appreciate the opportunities
that you've got in life.

As you get to the
end of your career,

and you start looking
back, you realize in some

regards how lucky you've been.

Our opportunities to have those
results again in the future

are limited.

I think that's where
some of the emotion

came from in the moment.

Ugh.

Should have gotten
the earlier flight.

I thought we'd be celebrating.

[chuckles]

Right now I want to escape.

We could have won
that race today.

[music playing]

You can't change your
visceral or emotional reaction

to a situation like that.

But I've realized in my
career over the years,

that if you take those
emotions, and you channel them

positively, it can be a
very, very powerful tool.

That same desire is
what I've channeled

into producing some of the best
race drives I've ever done.

My mentality when I
got in that race car

is: I am going to
drive to the front.

I know that's not a coincidence.

I made a conscious decision, and
that's exactly what happened.

This is the element of
the human mind and spirit

that I don't understand.

I know that there are moments
when it could have gone wrong.

I could have ended up
in a crumpled heap.

What's the difference between
keeping your foot in it

at 150 miles an hour in the
pouring rain, versus crashing

into the back of somebody?

I don't know.

I don't have the answer to that.

But honestly, if I
knew the answer to it,

maybe I wouldn't do it anymore.

To me, the unique challenge
of driving a racing car

is being in that
moment and keeping

a grip of your mental state.

When you've had
to fight for that

win, if you've somehow given
everything of yourself.

I feel like I need to
have fought for it.

I've earned it somehow.

I don't understand
it, but I think

it's arguably what drives me.

And of course, the luster
fades quite quickly.

And here we are back at
another race weekend,

and we try and do it all again.

And that's just the
nature of the circus.

We're on the road, and
we're at the next event.

And I know it's a
cliche, but you're only

as good as your last race.

And now you've got
to do it all again.

In order to excel
at anything, it

requires a tremendous amount of
commitment, energy, and focus.

Being in the race car is the
most focused I will ever be.

There's nothing else
to get in the way.

There's nothing
else to think about.

It's completely immersive,
taking you out of the moment

and allowing you to
focus on one thing.

At the end of the day,
it's about your mind.

Driving a racing car on the
limit is a form of expression.

It's a form of
artistic expression.

Your ability to extract
the maximum potential

of the vehicle is, in itself, an
extension of your personality.

You are giving a
performance in the car.

I think it's not just
something that I enjoy doing.

It's something
that I need to do.

Without that, a whole piece
of you would be missing.

That performance
becomes your life.
