The Minister of the Interior said,
'First we are going to kill the activists,'

'then their accomplices,
then their friends, then their families.'

'We will not leave even the memory
of people who wanted change here.'

And that is what they tried to do.

It must be understood, that the terror
did not end with the dictatorship.

An entire generation
remains completely terrorized.

I was very young at the time,
and I remember the feeling

that for passing out 4 pamphlets they
could torture you for 6 years straight.

Terror was corporate globalization's
form of political power.

It only works by building
consensus in a very specific way:

through fear, through terror.

Something broke:

The illusion that corporate globalization
was going to bring us happiness,

the illusion that this was democracy.

But fundamentally,
what broke on the 19th

was the last element of state terror.

Those in power attempt to spread
the idea in the entire population,

That their way of life is the only way.

There is only one
homogenous, linear moment,

in which everything in the future
is the same as the present and the past.

You can not hope for any kind of change,
there are no ruptures in history.

But there are ruptures,

tremendous ruptures that shatter
this dominant history,

and there are no routines,
there can be no predictions,

and things happen
that no one understands.

Everyone must go,
not one can stay!

It rains! It rains!
and the people do not move!

We will be back!

Our ancestors taught us
to work this land.

And we continue as they did,
planting the seeds of corn and beans.

The Mother Earth
is what gives us food,

and what will one day cover us.

It is how we provide
for our children and our families.

And so we must defend it.

The government says
that there are no problems here,

That we are at peace.

But it is a lie.

Brothers and Sisters,

We are Indigenous, and represent the
Zapatista National Liberation Army,

that rose up against the government.

and that holds high its banners

of Democracy, Liberty and Justice
for all Mexicans.

We are warriors.

We are the last of a generation
of men and women

who have been
collectively entrusted with being

guardian and heart of the people.

I just wanted to say that there are some
really violent people over there,

inside the security perimeter,

and they're the 34 leaders
of this hemisphere.

People like George Bush,
Vicente Fox, Jean Chr�tien.

If you want to say "Hi" to them,
go straight.

The FTAA would mean
the loss of national sovereignty,

And a violation of human rights:

the right to health care, education,
collective rights, the rights of workers.

It would leave it up to the 'free market,'

to transnational corporations,
to divide the wealth.

It will lead to our impoverishment,

with the control of the economy

in the hands of a few large transnationals.

In the 70s they tried
to cut off our history.

We are here to authenticate
the real history of the Argentine people,

its struggle, its conscience,

and try to bring this country forward
so that we can have dignity.

The dictatorship continues. The political
and economic policies are the same

deepened and worsened
for the Argentine people.

Those who we remember today,
who are always present in us,

were struggling for our dignity.

That is why they tried to eliminate them.

That is why, every year,
we remember them

with all of our pride,
enthusiasm and love.

In every one of you, lives one of them.

In every one of you,
lives one of the 30,000,

or 10 or 20 or 30 of the 30,000.

We must fight so that
more children do not die.

It can not be a thing of pity,

it can not be that in this country
100 children die every day.

We can not allow it.
We must accompany the struggles

Each of us must feel, at last,
that I am 'the Other'.

I am 'the Other.'

I am 'the Other.'

I am 'the Other.'

I am 'the Other.'

I am 'the Other.'

I am the unemployed worker.

I am the revolutionary.

I am those who
take over their factory.

I am those who do not eat.

I am all of us.

Long live the Zapatista
National Liberation Army!

Jolnachoj is not a barracks,
away with the army!

The people united,
will never be defeated.

Men, children and women,

we will always make the effort,

Workers and Peasants,

All together with the people.

Forward, forward, forward we go!

To take part in the struggle ahead,

Because our country
cries out in need for

all of the force of the Zapatistas.

Gathering the rage of 12 million
workers and the Korean people,

the KCTU will counter the undemocratic
rashness of the new labor law.

As of this morning,
December 26th, 1996,

all KCTU unions are on a
no time limit general strike.

Fellow citizens, participate!

All of the economic ministers from the
dictatorship up to and including today,

were neoliberals, with a framework for
how countries should be organized:

That states can not continue responding
to demands from society,

and that society must make
its demands to the market.

Which is an academic way of saying
that nation states must be destroyed,

and people must
survive in the market,

Which is to say: 'fuck them.'

Large sectors of the middle class
were very happy with the cheap dollar.

They travelled everywhere
and consumed like the 'first world',

while between 10 and 12 million people
could no longer maintain a dignifi ed life,

and they decided not to look,
not to see anything.

From the most superficial perspective,

the sectors of the middle class
that benefited from neoliberalism

discovered that it was an illusion.

The ability to identify
as a powerful consumer was destroyed.

Come back Africa!
We want you back!

Not one of the presidential candidates
had so many people come to their rallies.

All those outside of political parties,

who may have voted for Fox,
to get rid of the dictatorship,

but want another Mexico,
one that is morejust, more dignifi ed.

All of them are feeling
the power they have.

It is not the same thing to go alone
to cast your vote,

as it is to be surrounded
by thousands more,

who think like you,
who want another Mexico.

I've been unemployed for 8 months.

I worked in a factory.

It closed and left the country.

I've been out of work for 3 years.

I was a chauffeur...

Two years without work.
I was a busdriver.

I was a trash collector.

I haven't worked in 2 years.

We're in Argentina.
That's why no one has work.

There are 26 families
in this land occupation.

The land was abandoned,
the people lost their patience,

and they decided to occupy it.

I am 18. I'vejust started a family
and my child is 2 months old.

I want to have something for them.

You can see that the police are here,

saying we can't enter
or leave this area.

This... is the police.

That harass you.
That beat you.

They beat you without feeling.

The ones that attacked us
in the Plaza de Mayo.

Without knowing why,
or who they attacked.

They lose their conscioussness
when they beat you.

They lose their humanity
when they shoot at you.

That is how it is. The poor life
of a poor man and a witness.

This was a huge mountain of dirt.

Dirt they had to move
with shovels, sweat,

hunger, fatigue, day and night.

That is how it is.
That is how you win the struggle.

Life is a struggle.

Struggle for it, live it,
enjoy it, suffer it.

And that is how you will be.
With your feet firmly planted.

Your head held high.

My land is the biggest thing I have,
the most beautiful thing I have.

We struggle for it, we fight for it,

with the police, with the government.

It is difficult, but with the help
and strength of all of us,

We will win.

We will win.

We are all illegal.

Who is the terrorist?

We are workers who
have been kicked out of the factories.

In the 70s, taking over factories
was the main form of struggle,

but now we are outside the factory,
in our communities.

We see that this system
works by circulating goods,

and blocking the highways
is what hurts the system most.

And so, we who have
nothing to make them pay the cost,

and show that we will not
give up and die for their greed,

we create difficulties for them by
blocking the routes of the large trucks,

like this one, that carry the profits

of the companies
that have emptied out this country.

When the people get angry,
they rule with blood, fire, and sweat.

We lost seven comrades
in the Plaza de Mayo.

They had no political
banner or ideology,

just young Argentines
who wanted freedom,

and they saw that when the people
want something, they will get it.

Those in power can not operate like
before, the people have said 'Enough'.

We got together all social classes,
from workers to the unemployed,

To say 'Enough.'

It is not enough, now, to cry
because children are dying of hunger,

or because entire families
are destroyed by unemployment.

We don't want to live like this,
and the only way out

is to turn our fear
into struggle and organization.

That's the only hope
we have to survive.

It is the hour of dignity,

It is the hour of looking
and looking at ourselves,

without shame and without fear.

It is the hour of struggle.

which we are, attentive.

Become our word once again.

You will no longer be you,
now you are us.

Walk, then.
Walk the land of the other,

Walk and speak.

to listen to the word of the other.
