Unknown: sharks.

Just the very word fills most people with thread.

But here I am in a tank with this killing machine.

This is in happenstance. I'm now out on some dive in the Bahamas,

or even in Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

I chose to get in this manmade aquarium

and face one of the most terror inducing creatures on the planet.

I'm here at CNM ocean world in Bangkok, Thailand,

with Planet scuba, getting ready

to swim with the sharks.

It's an up close and personal encounter most people would run from.

So how did I get here?

That's a really good question.

I flew into Bangkok into the ultra modern so Juana Poom Airport.

The name Juana Poom was chosen by His Majesty the King of Thailand.

It means the golden land.

From the airport, it's a quick ride to the center of Bangkok.

And in no time at all,

I find myself at my hotel

the view is all inspiring

as day turns into night.

Bangkok is the ultimate shopper's paradise

from the pack streets and alleys of Chinatown.

To the tourists stands that line sukumvit road

you can find anything here

the holy grail of Bangkok shopping lies at Siyam Paragon

with a gigantic 500,000 square meters of retail space.

Known as the pride of Bangkok, this shopping complex rivals any in the world.

If you're looking for anything from a Prada bag, to a Maserati,

you can find it here.

But it is in the basement that we find one of the most unusual treasures.

Zeon ocean world aquarium

Covering 10,000 square meters, the aquarium has a capacity

of more than 5 million liters of water.

This aquatic Wonderland exhibits over 30,000 Curious looking creatures

from various depths and aquatic regions across the globe.

Here you can see everything from these long legged Alaskan King grabs

to the slippery, treacherous moray eels.

The Guitar fish certainly qualifies as one of the strangest fish I've ever seen.

With a sharp like tail and a front end it looks like it's been squashed.

Children certainly do seem to like him.

Perhaps it's because his mouth on his underbelly seems fixed

in an almost constant, cartoonish way.

the ray like wings extended from its body in create a smooth and graceful
swimmer.

Their main diet consists of scallops and shrimp

this coral ray has a broken tail and it's on the men.

Many rays of tails that have venomous spines

they can be used to inflict painful wounds.

In some rare and unusual cases, there have been human deaths

associated with these deadly tails.

Rays are found in all oceans.

Many are slow moving bottom dwellers.

Manta Rays feed on plankton and small animals,

while others take various fishes or invertebrates.

Most give birth to live young

this subterranean tunnel affords a 360 degree view of the living sea

that surrounds you.

Group is very widely inside some are very large fishes,

attaining a length and weight of about two meters

and about 225 kilograms

for a barley snapper, and hundreds of other species swim harmoniously around us.

In most dive trips, you never know how much you'll get to see

but here the variety and sheer numbers are absolutely all inspiring.

It's truly a dive Wonderland

Ever wonder what a fish sees when he looks at you outside the tank

Well, this will give you an idea

Small groups can come in and even spend the night

supervised by both the staff and their parents.

By creating an exciting environment, the children have both a great deal of fun

and remember valuable lessons about the underwater world.

But there is one inhabitant that has my full attention today.

The ragged tooth sharks.

Their teeth are arranged in rows, which continually move forward like a conveyor
belt

as the old ones dropped loose.

This is to ensure a constant supply of these sharp new teeth.

The sharks can be found in the Waters of the US, Japan,

Australia and South Africa

thet can reach a length of three to three and a half meters long,

almost 12 feet

they are active night feeders.

And the sharks have the ability to gulp air and store in their stomach,

allowing them to maintain near neutral buoyancy,

which helps greatly in their nightly hunts.

While there are a few reports of unprovoked attacks against humans

by these deadly ocean predators,

certainly don't want to put that to the test today.

Even knowing all these facts doesn't help to quell the chills and goosebumps,

that are raised as they silently glide past me

there are so many at first, they seem to stay away,

keep their distance, but the longer I'm in here in their territory,

their environment

I am becoming a source of curiosity.

I am the outsider here,

the interloper.

Words fail to describe the almost primal fear that these predators generate,

but also a sense of beauty and grace.

The first sharks lived more than 400 million years ago

200 million years before the first dinosaurs.

There are some amazing facts about sharks

more than two thirds of the size of a shark brain is used for the senses.

There are over 400 different species of sharks

a shark does not have one bone in its body.

Its skeleton is made up of cartilage.

Cartilage is tough material similar to that that shapes your ear and the tip of
your nose.

Also, sharks never get cancer.

Their cartilage is being studied

with the hope of delivering anti cancer drugs.

Sharks attack men more than women.

No one seems to know why this is the case.

Most species of sharks can swim from 20 to 40 miles per hour.

A mako shark has been recorded at more than 60 miles per hour

due to the positioning of their eyes,

sharks can see almost as well behind them

as they can in front.

More people are killed by beestings in any given year

than by shark attacks.

The jaws of bigger sharks are about twice as powerful

as the jaws of a lion.

baby sharks are born with sharp teeth

and the ability to hunt right away.

Probably because they're constantly shedding teeth.

Sharks have up to 40 to 45 teeth

with up to seven rows of replacement teeth behind them.

When a front tooth breaks or falls out,

it takes only about one day for replacement

to move forward to the front row.

Sharks can go through more than 30,000 teeth in a lifetime.

Newer teeth are always larger.

So that's why sharks look scarier as they age.

Some very strange items have been found inside shark's stomachs,

including shoes, chairs, the rear half of a horse,

a box of nails, a torpedo

drums and various bottles of wine

sharks must swim constantly

to force water through their mouths and over their gills.

They have keenly developed senses.

Sharks have been called swimming noses

because their sense of smell is so good.

But hearing is probably the best of all of a shark senses.

Some sharks can hear prey in the water from 3000 feet away.

They are better at detecting low frequency sounds,

so they can't detect the high frequency sounds dolphins make.

The second most dangerous shark in the world. The tiger shark

is sometimes called the garbage can of the sea

because it will eat anything, including animal carcasses,

tin cans, car tires, and other garbage

one was even found having a chicken coop

with the remains of bones and feathers inside its stomach.

My encounter with these magnificent creatures is one that I will not soon
forget.
