the theory of evolution.

It's considered established knowledge.

Were the dinosaurs our ancestors?
Did we come from apes?

The more I saw, the more I thought,

"There's someone behind everything,
who designed it all."

I was fascinated by what he was saying.

It was very coherent.

for the primitives.

seeing lights moving at high speeds.

and there had been many UFO sightings.

and what did I see?

There was a ball inside it.

- A man came from the flames.

"I saw a flying saucer",

I was scared, I wanted to leave,

but I didn't leave, I can't explain why.

And then, some stairs came down.

I saw two legs appear. Like a child's.
They were very small.

- No, green. Then he spoke to me.

He spoke to me in near perfect French.

[Chancel] Did you ask
how he came to speak French?

- Of course. Of course.
- And?

He said he knew all the world's languages.

He said that he had
an important message for all of humanity.

These beings are desperately seeking
to make contact with us.

They created us.

They're the important ones.

It was really moving for me
because there he was on TV,

saying things
that aren't very easy to say.

You're claiming to us
that you've met an alien.

He saw what I saw.

In 1974, I was driving
from Metz to Vigy, in Moselle.

I could normally drive really fast,

have some fun on that long, straight road,

but not that day.

There was a star in the sky.

What's a star doing there?

I'd never seen a star
at five in the evening in that spot.

Then suddenly, I saw the star move
in sort of zigzag from where it was.

- And then, it came towards me.

There was a farmer
on the hill with his tractor,

plowing his field.

The craft passed over the two of us,

about what, 40 yards,
50 yards above the ground.

Both our engines stopped when it passed.

They just died.

I got out of my car. It hovered.

I'll never forget, the farmer was standing
on his tractor like this.

And then he saw me,
and he said, "Did you see that?"

"Yes, I saw it."

- He said, "What is it?"
- "Damned if I know."

It was impressive, really,

because I was in the military, you know,

on an aircraft carrier for a few years.

I know an aircraft when I see one.

It was unlike anything
I had ever seen before.

It was not of this world.

[ominous music]

A few weeks later,
I was back in Metz, near the cathedral.

There was a bookshop on the corner.

I went inside and there was
a stack of books with black covers.

It was The Book That Tells The Truth.

I thought, "That's the guy
who was on TV. I'm sure of it."

I bought the book,
and I spent the night reading it.

I read it twice that night,
and I thought, "This is it!"

This book contains the whole revelation.

THE BOOK THAT TELLS THE TRUTH

CHAPTER 1
THE ENCOUNTER

[Brigitte] I couldn't stop reading.

It spoke to me so profoundly,
and it was so clear.

CHAPTER 7
THE ELOHIM

[Jean-Pierre] The Elohim.

These aliens are, in fact, men.

Men who are like us.

Two legs, two arms, a head,
and a brain between their ears.

They created us and everything on Earth.

We were scientifically created
by beings from another planet.

What we thought was God
was actually aliens.

Reading that book
is like a breath of fresh air.

The message the Elohim gave to Raël has
scientific and philosophical dimensions.

It was amazing.

It became more and more exciting.

All the stages of evolution

can now be explained
by creation in a laboratory.

[Jean-Pierre] When I see
the beauty of nature,

birds singing and frolicking,

flowers, scents and so on.

That is the work of artists,
the work of poets who are full of love.

Chance can't create such things.

When we look at the human body,

when we look at the animals,
when we look at the flora,

it really moves me to think about creation
from a scientist's perspective.

But they're not just scientists.
They're our creators.

[Jean-Pierre] Suddenly, I felt like
I had a slab of concrete

to put my feet on, so I wouldn't sink.

I had something solid.

My life was just starting.

I went to see him
at his little house in Périgord.

When I arrived,
I noticed that there was a difference

between the Claude Vorilhon
I had seen on television

and the man in front of me.

His beard and his hair had grown.

I discovered the real him,

with all his sincerity and authenticity.

above us, in space,

these beings love us and want to bring us...

Four years ago, I found this book...

[Philippe] Initially, I came across Raël
through The Book That Tells The Truth.

I always thought there were aliens.
It's obvious that we're not alone.

what you might call a... a well-off family.

When I arrived,
I realized there were not many others

who grew up in the same echelon as me.

It didn't matter.

In fact, nobody cared,

or was embarrassed at all

was one of true honesty.

I was a bit lost at the time.

I had no ambition,

nothing to work towards
in my professional life.

The aim was to help
the last of the prophets.

A bit like a Christian
being an apostle for Jesus.

It became my life's work.

My mom was a school teacher and a Raëlian.

One day, when I was a teenager,

she just gave me the book.

And I suddenly realized that the God
my grandmother had told us about

was in fact people
from another planet, aliens.

when I saw Raël for the first time.

I was 18 years old...

I'm so sorry.

Raël passed by, and well, I saw his eyes.

Those beautiful blue eyes!

He was the Elohim's
representative on Earth.

we all have a genetic code

your baptism.

Telling the people around you
and the Elohim,

"Okay, I'm a part of...

to a computer

which controls all our actions.

to feel absolutely at one
with our creators, the Elohim,

who are, at this very moment,
somewhere above us in space...

placing his right on your forehead
and his left on the back of your neck.

And he says,
"The Elohim have recognized you."

You transmit a wave to their planet

which says that you,
a human being from Earth,

who knows
that he was created scientifically,

recognizes the Elohim as his creator.

That's the transmission
of the cellular plan.

I remember my transmission
of the cellular plan very clearly.

I felt like a belt
that was connected to another belt,

which ran through the sky
to another planet.

[Brigitte] It was a life commitment
with really huge implications.

It meant that you agreed to live
according to the philosophy of Raël.

[Jean-Pierre] We were baptized Raëlians.

It was the start.
It was the start of the movement.

HELP US WELCOME ALIENS

ALIENS LOVE YOU

[Damien] We sold his books.

For example, we had street stalls
and we went door-to-door.

We were selling
the most important product you could sell,

the truth.

Just being a seller of the truth...

was something amazing.

[Philippe] Raël traveled a lot.

He did some live TV shows.

I have met beings from the sky

who are far more advanced than us.

Far more advanced.

He wanted me to talk to the media.

We had to be visible.

It's the Jewish star and the swastika.

It's actually an ancient symbol
found in the Tibetan Book of the Dead.

For him, all press was good press.

there were more and more of us.

So, Raël appointed guides,

enabling him to spread
his message more widely.

I was completely on board.

I probably would have done more,

a slightly raised platform before us,

a second contact.

He had been on a craft and departed.

It was the aliens' second message.
"They took me to their planet."

THE MESSAGE GIVEN BY THE ALIENS

This time, I was taken aboard
one of the vessels they use

which travel much faster than light,

and I was able to visit the planet
where the Elohim live.

THE ALIENS TOOK ME TO THEIR PLANET

2. THE SECOND ENCOUNTER

[Philippe] Once Raël is on the planet,

he discovers
an absolutely wonderful place,

because everything was done
to make it pleasant and harmonious.

It rains at night, not during the day.

He explained
that there was background music

that faded when they spoke,
and got louder when they stopped.

It was a heavenly landscape.

I saw many small squirrels
with teddy-bear heads.

They were pink and blue.
Just breathtaking, so beautiful.

So then, it really becomes,

if I didn't know you any better,
Mr Vorilhon, I'd say "unbelievable".

Is it unbelievable?

[Philippe] So, after that,
Raël was invited to a dinner

with the great prophets.

MEETING THE ANCIENT PROPHETS

Who was at the table?

- Moses, Mohammed. All the great prophets.
- Really? Wow!

- And Buddha. They said...
- Buddha was there?

[laughs] Yes!

Yes.

There was Jesus, Moses, Buddha, Mohammed,

who are kept alive thanks to the process
of cellular and DNA manipulation.

The revelation didn't stop there.

On the planet,
they introduced him to someone

who was very harmonious.

It was his brother, Jesus.

- He's my brother.

Well, that shook everyone up
a little bit more.

an incredibly accomplished man, of course.

And now he was a prophet.

And as a prophet, he was on a mission.

He is Jesus's brother,

he saw Moses, Elijah.

the admiration

extremely anti-science speeches,

when science was supposed
to be our religion,

it was frustrating, infuriating.

the fundamental belief
that Raël was the messiah.

That's the power of faith.

Your belief is so strong
that you'll accept anything.

People lose the ability to reason.

Everything he says is the truth,
even without proof.

It's the divine word.
You don't question it.

Judge Fenech is one of the first

to preside over a case involving a cult.

[Judge Fenech] Back then, In the 1970s,

being part of a cult
was considered outlandish.

The Hare Krishnas, for example,
all pacifists and good-natured.

from this kind of flower power

to harmful power,
potentially very dangerous.

Jonestown's horror is
the most dramatic story in a long while.

And then suddenly, there are deaths.

Suicides, the Jonestown Massacre,
900 dead from poisoning.

in the Jonestown story is

why so many people apparently
accepted death with so little resistance.

[anchor 3] Jim Jones, the cult leader,
convinced his followers

to drink the poison.

It was an American phenomenon.

Then all of a sudden,
it's in France, in our homes.

Gurus are really
perfectly positioned to enlist recruits.

Raël used a form of manipulation.

He claimed, "I'm the new prophet."

"Those who believe me are free
to follow me."

It's a very disturbing system,

when you think about it.

But it seems to bring forth
a new world vision,

a new way of thinking,

a feeling of belonging
for those who have the knowledge,

if you know what I mean.

ALIENS
HELP US WELCOME THEM

Really... as long as they are not
fundamentally harming society,

they're actually within their rights.

But we need to keep an eye on them.

[Raël] It's the name
that the aliens bestowed upon me.

It means "messenger".

Now, we will communicate to them
the extraordinary love we have for them.

Firstly, we'll oxygenate our brains.

Out of all of us,

meditation before.

Um, but most of us didn't know
how to do it.

And it really surprised us.

Raël taught us a key phrase.

"If you want to remove the pants
from your head,

"you must first remove the pants
from your ass."

That unleashed a lot of things

in the minds of people
steeped in the Christian culture.

For years, I had been a choir boy.

My mother was a very religious person.

I had spent my life
surrounded by red Catholic robes.

And then to find myself in a group,
unashamedly naked,

I thought, "Yeah, okay, let's see."

It had to be done.

It wasn't easy, but we did it.

[electronic music]

It was funny.
Everyone was hiding in the grass.

All we could see were their heads
above the tall grass.

They managed to get naked,
but also to hide.

[upbeat electronic music]

[indistinct chattering]

[Damien] It certainly relaxed me,

because before I was a Raëlian,

I was a very closed-off teenager,

emotionally deprived, and it...

Well, it definitely brought me
out of my shell.

[Philippe] Nudity was
terribly embarrassing for me.

I grew up in a Catholic environment,

where nudity was very taboo.

And I wondered what would happen

if I had a reaction,
if you know what I mean.

It was the first occasion like this
for the followers.

Many people had never done this.

[Raël] You feel a wave of warmth
rising slowly up to your genitals.

You arrive at the root of your genitals,

where they join the anus.

I remember, uh, there was this exercise.

It involved a mirror, which you used
to look at every part of your body.

We even looked at our anuses.

[Raël] Take the mirror
and use it to look at your anus.

Don't be ashamed.

[Raël] Look at this part of yourself
that you've never looked at.

It's true! You never look at it.

What did this practice do for me?

It changed my personality.

At one time,

if you looked at my girlfriend
a certain way,

I'd smash your face.

I was a real brute.
I was a fighter, a warrior.

I'd been trained for that.

It's stupid, but that's who I was.

I was an idiot, really,
to put it bluntly. And then...

- My children saw the change in me, too.

I wasn't the tough,
demanding, hard father.

I became the gentle father
they could rely on.

being a part of a big family,

Being surrounded by a cloud of love,

which was so strong
that it was inconceivable

that it might not be real.

we decided, as Raëlians,

that we needed to build
our own future, our own space.

of our creators, the Elohim.

They love us. They are always watching.

So, the people in charge
of the Raëlian movement felt

the need for us to settle down.

We needed to find a place
where we could really be comfortable.

Somewhere that would be our true home.

So then, they ended up
finding this plot of land.

Eden was a familiar place.

I really felt like I was at home there.

a two-week vacation every time.

[chuckles] Because we came as a family.

Well, it was a real paradise.

You arrived through this passageway.

On the other side, there was a house,
with nature all around.

At the time, Raël lived in that house.

the right place, together.

I'll put it bluntly,
we could only call it Eden,

since The Garden of Eden was the garden
where man was first set free.

We were told that future generations
would go on pilgrimages to Eden.

because they wanted our authentic selves.

masks were falling away.

It is no longer a dream,
or just in our imagination.

It is the happiest moment of my life.

At Eden, we had been freed.

We didn't really care if we were
a little bit fat, or short or anything.

There were no more taboos.

I went to Eden for the first time in 1988.

And it was really amazing. It was...

Yeah, it was paradise.

I was, you could say,

a battered woman,
before I encountered the movement.

And there, I met people
who were full of love.

I realized that love still existed.

It was a place which was outside of time,

outside of society,

outside of everything else
and the weight of everyday life.

Everyone was always happy,
always smiling, everyone.

I mean, there was a lot of harmony.

when I went to Eden the first time,

there was a Belgian couple,
not far from my tent,

who were making love there,
in the open air,

with all the accompanying sounds,
and all of that.

It was my first experience.
I wasn't very liberated yet.

I thought, "No way,

"I could never do
something like that."

But...

[Brigitte] Everyone seemed happy together.
People were comfortable,

Uh, women were comfortable.
But I wasn't that comfortable.

Even as the successful woman that I was,
I was still very shy.

Raël said I looked like a nun.

Eden was also a paradise
because we were outside of society.

We had our own routines, our own rules.

Gay and lesbian people were welcome.

All people were welcome.

And at the time, in the '80s,

it was difficult
as a gay person to live freely.

The goal was to become liberated.

I just wanna say
the love of the Elohim is with you.

The love of the Elohim guides your lives.

Something that shocked me at times was
that Raël often seemed...

almost proud
of the number of his conquests.

having slept with, I don't know,

hundreds, thousands of women.

As if he was really proud of it, you know.
It was kind of strange to be around that.

He would openly brag about sleeping
with this or with that person.

He preached that jealousy is
love's opposite.

Raël said that
a jealous person is unfulfilled.

I've seen many Raëlians ask their partners

to have sexual relations with other people

to help them control
their feelings of jealousy.

Since they believed
it was for a noble cause,

they did it.

But what's interesting is that
Raël himself is extremely jealous.

He just doesn't show it.

I couldn't imagine someone
being so conflicted within himself,

and lying and manipulating others.

and decided to dress all in white.

The first time I saw Raël, he wore black.

When he started wearing white,

it was like he fully embraced
his role as a prophet.

the time I spent at Eden was amazing.

the entire scientific community,
