I love it how when they, um
these guys that race cars,

every time something fucks up,
they're blaming something.

They're blaming something, you know.
Middle of the race they pull over, you know.

And there's nothing visually
wrong with the car. And you walk up

and you go what's going on?
What's wrong you know.

And they go the gearbox is fucked and the
tyre was rubbing,and all this sort of stuff.

there's always someone to
blame something to blame.

Just once I'd like to hear this you
know so what happened out there.

Bit scared.

Do you know how fast this thing goes?

Fuck I'm driving and
there's people everywhere and

just not giving me any room,
and I don't have any insurance.

What happens if I hit a Mercedes?

When I was a kid.
I dreamed of being a race car driver.

If It had wheels and an engine,
I wanted to drive it.

Cars to me were what you lived for.

There was nothing else.

As I got older fate, luck

and circumstance had other ideas.

Not that I�m complaining of course.

Even though life has taken me on
a surreal and unexpected journey,

two things have remained constant.

My mates and my BEAST!
This is our story.

I think when most people
picture a childhood in Australia,

especially if they�re from
overseas, they have this

iconic image of beautiful
sandy beaches and sun and surf.

Oh the dream.

The closest me and my mates got
to surf was watching Hawaii 5-0.

We grew up in the
suburbs of Melbourne.

Right next to the airport
in a semi industrial area

surrounded by
warehouses and factories.

So essentially we were
landlocked mammals.

It was the era of the muscle car.

Before people were worried
about the environment.

Before filling up your tank required
taking out a second mortgage.

So I grew up surrounded by
big engines and big cars.

And the place where all these
muscle cars were raced was Bathurst.

Australia's equivalent to Le Mans.

There was a historic moment in the 1977
race when Alan Moffat and Colin Bond

both driving Ford Falcon coupes,
pulled off the first ever 1,2 finish.

For me this was better then seeing
Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.

Magnificent view from the Seven helicopter.
A scene we've never seen before.

It was one of those moments that
truly gets etched in your mind.

And from that moment on I just
simply fell in love with that car.

What got Eric into driving seriously
was like every kid back in the 70's,

watching Peter Brock and Dick Johnston and
Allan Grice all those guys racing Bathurst.

And when I was 16 I convinced my
older brother to buy an XB falcon coupe

because he was driving around
in an Alfa Romeo and I'm like

Stan mate you'll never get laid
if you drive an Alfa Romeo mate

you gotta get a hot car mate,
you gotta get a GT or something.

Well you know we're talking northern suburbs
here, where cars were ya status symbol

you know and um that was like the
greatest car of all time when you're 16.

She's the last of the V8's

Yeah, she's the last of
the V8's, she sucks nitro

I was already determined to
one day own a Falcon coupe.

So you could imagine the impact
on me when I saw Mad Max.

Here I was nine years old in
the western suburbs of Melbourne

with a suppressed creative bent,

seeing Mel Gibson marry the two
things that I loved the most:

Cinema and a Falcon Coupe.

I had seen the future and it
had changed my life forever.

I've never met anyone thats
had a car for so long that

was such a heap of shit
that could be so in love it.

You know like you would have
thought as he made more money that

he'd go and buy one that was
better and really good condition

but na he's just persisted
with that particular car.

When I was 15 I convinced my Dad to
let me buy a Falcon coupe of my own.

It wasn�t exactly like the
ones they raced at Bathurst.

You could say it needed a lot of
work but I could see its potential.

1974 XB coupe doesn't look the best at
the moment but that's because it's not.

Pretty shit-ouse the
viewers at home are saying.

I immediately enlisted the help
of my mates to help work on the car

and transform it from the rust bucket that
it was, into the beast I knew it could be.

From the age of 15 my coupe was our
campfire it was what we gathered around,

it was the excuse to come together.

There was always something
to do to keep it on the road

and if we weren't driving
it, we were working on it.

It kept us out of trouble and
it kept us in my parents garage.

The Garage was like a club house for
me and my mates Tony, Jack and Temps.

We were always out there.

In our cave, in our cocoon.

It felt like my entire youth
was spent in that garage.

Well it's always been about friendship
and thats how you'd sum that car up.

It's about keeping the bond you know
and ah feeling, feeling that youth.

Cos that feeling of
youth is fantastic so,

and the coupe always makes
you feel like your 16 again.

So I mean that's how
we're getting by, you know.

I have a favourite name for them, I call
them the Essendon Grammar Mafia, car mafia.

Because they've been with that
car for nearly 24 years now and

it's been a collective effort,
ah through all the years through

all the 3 different rebuilds
that the car has gone through.

I kind of feel totally
responsible for all of that because

it was ah with my approval
that we got the car for him.

The T-Bird was the start wasn't it?

That was the pride and joy,
Eric would bring his mates,

well Eric's friends were
always at our place so when

the T-Bird came along that
was even more of a tinkering.

Ivan used to take them for
drives around the block or

down the freeway or whatever
so yeah it was a big part of it.

When was the last time you,
you um turned it over?

The last real usage
was on your wedding day

Wedding day.
Which is 10 years.

Dad can I ask what that is?

Well it's to, soak up any

any fuel leak on the carby.

It's a good thing you didn't start just
then cos it would have bloody flamed up.

Well

- How old do you reckon it would be Dad?

Not as old as the car.

I remember as a 17
year old in Germany,

looking at a American dealership

display window with a 59 Fair lane,

stood there for half an hour
looking from different angle

and said one day I'm going
to have a large American car.

Bana's old man had an old
T- Bird and it weighs a tonne

and its got springs but I don't
think it's got any shocks in it

he come past my place one night. I used to
live in a double story house with my parents.

And he thought it was me looking
through the upstairs bedroom window

and it was actually my old man so he's
come down the road and he's just stopped

the car out the front of the house and
he'd take off and then slam the brakes on.

So this car would go...

And he just slammed it up and
down the road about ten times.

And Bana's showing off more and more
cos he thinks it's me out the window

going hey and it's my old man
going you fuckin' idiot who are you?

So yeah he impressed
my old man big time.

I didn't have the courage to tell my
old man until about ten years later

that it was actually Bana
that night that did that.

It was his daily driver
for a long long time.

Used to get dropped off to school in this
car every day and do a few miles in it.

So yeah it's done it's job.
Used to be green.

Used to be green and then it was
two tone green, had a vinyl roof.

And then he decided he
wanted a red Thunderbird.

So here it is.

It's what non car people don't get.

They see all cars as
just a tonne and half,

two tonnes of wires,
glass, metal and rubber.

That's all they see.
People like you or I know.

We have an unshakable belief
that cars are living entities.

Well not a Toyota
Corolla obviously. A real.

You can develop a relationship with a car
and thats what non car people just don't get

I keep some of the
fancy stuff in here.

These are all Bugatti's.

Everything here is on the street.
We drive them all.

That's the great
thing about California.

I got more stuff in here.

Have you had a relationship
with any of your cars?

Oh I've had a relationship with all
of my cars. I can't sell anything.

Oh no I never sell anything. Oh
god no. I never sell anything.

But have any of them ever not
lived up to your expectations?

Let's just say the tank car.

You know I've always been
happy with whatever I've had.

I mean when I had a, there's my
55 Buick road master next door.

I bought that in 72
when I first came here.

And I slept in it, and I lived in it.

It was a junky old car and
I loved it and I enjoyed it.

When I got enough money I fixed it up.
I never sell anything.

I mean there all still here.
I just buy another building.

So how much of it is the getting
together and building the car?

Well the great fun is getting
together and building the car

and once you finish it, you
move onto the next project.

We never quite managed to
move onto that next project,

we just kept working on the coupe.

In 1996 we turned it into a
race car for the first time.

Me, Tony, Temps and Jack.

We did all the work ourselves and
entered it into our first ever race.

A 5 day endurance rally
called Targa Tasmania.

We took it down to Tasmania and it was
just like being a kid in a candy store.

It was too good to be true. You could
drive the car as fast as you wanted and

fast as you possibly could
and there were no limits,

you�re just hooning around
someone�s streets legally

and there's police on the side of
the roads clapping and cheering and

you just can't believe it you are
waiting for blue lights to appear in

your rear-view mirror and to be arrested
but its all above board and encouraged.

Let's do it again.
Let's get back in line.

We had no real expectations other
then to finish and have some fun,

but we finished 3rd in our
class in our first attempt.

And next up ladies and gentlemen,
Eric Bana. Enter the big Ford.

We didn't even realise at the
time how difficult that was to do.

Eric has been throwing this big car
around the course over the last few days.

A very good sight.

And that was it.
That was the start of the real thing.

My first proper race,
and the bug had bitten.

I was hooked. After that I was going
to try and get to as many events,

as many rallies and circuit
races as I possible could.

I mean I enjoy working on cars
and trying to restore them.

But in the same way that
I wasn't particularly good

at kicking a soccer ball
or playing football.

Race car driving is a sport.
I mean your a natural athlete.

I'm not a natural athlete.
So I don't go out there and.

I don't want to know how bad
I am you know it's a bit like,

I enjoy having sex I don't
want to be a porn star.

I just enjoy it so
that's why I don't race.

It's hard for me to describe
my obsession with motor racing.

Or what it actually feels like
to drive a race car on the limit.

There�s a focus and an intensity
that I just don't find anywhere else.

You�re always on the edge and
you�re never holding anything back.

it's just tense tense every second.

It's a zone that feeds
your competitive nature.

When a car gets past you, you
just want to go after them,

you wanna chase them down,
and you wanna pass them.

It's primal.

But then there's another side to it.

Where you just completely forget
about all the other cars on the track

and you feel like you
are in another world.

It's just you at one
with the road and the car.

It's amazing.
When you get in the zone.

Everything works.
Your hand is working.

Your brain is working.
Your body is working.

It's that point at which you bring
all your skill, all your ability,

all your intellect, all your focus
right down to that task at hand.

You've hit a rhythm and you've hit a focus
that is a peak performance range for you.

When you're in the zone you do
feel a sense of invincibility.

Like, you feel like superman.
- Yeah.

What is that about and can
that make it a dangerous thing?

Well it can if you get to
believing that your bullet proof.

Because there ain't a zone
where your bulletproof.

It's peak performance. It's not
immortality, it's not invulnerability.

And you know we, we have

to know what our limitations are.

All the stuff that we
hopefully wont need.

Flameproof underwear.

Flameproof suits.
Flameproof socks.

Flameproof gloves.
Flameproof shoes.

Flameproof helmets.

I've just pulled your helmet
apart to put the um head set in.

There actually, I've taken
the rubber surround off them

cos they're a heap bigger than
that. They're really large.

Bloody hell, they're going to be heaps

louder than the old ones.
- What I did on mine.

I actually cut this back
section out, put it in there.

Or maybe here cos there's foam padding
on there. Well all I did on mine is...

It's like a big remote control.
You're just a dummy and you just go.

And I go left and the
steering wheel goes left.

Right and the steering
wheel goes right.

It's a very, it's a very high
tech dummy though isn't it?

Expensive dummy too
- Bloody expensive

Ok so right 3-

Point straight to the flower, the
red flower, pink flower, pink flower.

And then it's a right 1.

You're not very good at
listening to instructions.

It's about sharing an
experience. And it's an experience

that we've both
loved all our whole life is

driving cars fast and hard and
now we're at that point in life

where we've got enough money to
be able do it and do it properly.

And really enjoy it. Drive something
that is totally wild, you know.

It's off it's face that car, you know.

In 2005 I decided to rebuild
the coupe for the last time,

a total ground up restoration that would
end in the ultimate version of my beast.

This time in full race specification
with over 600 horse power.

One week until she starts.

Three weeks until she drives.

Very, very, very excited.

You see the car now and you just can't
believe that, that is the same car.

I don't know if there's a hell of a lot of the original
metal left in that car its all been replaced now.

With no expense spared and
thousands of man hours put into it,

it literally was a work of art.

It was finally my perfect beast.

10 years after that first race the boys
and I were heading back to Targa Tasmania.

The plan was to race the car one last
time in the race that started it all.

Targa is a 5 day endurance rally raced
on closed down sections of public road

on an island at the end of the world.

The variety of terrain, sheer distance,
challenges both mental and physical.

Make it the ultimate test
of car, driver and navigator.

This race is about horses for courses.
There's different cars that will kick arse.

And there's, you've
got the beached whale.

The coupe. Um it's just so wide. It's
probably one of the widest cars around.

It's just hard to get around some
corners in some of the mountain stages.

Depending on how Eric is
thinking, after this event.

He might say look I've
built the car for this event.

I've done it. I'm gonna take it
home now and put it in the garage.

I've done the race in the
coupe I've wanted to do

but now he might turn around and say
Na I'm going to do something else.

So you're all sorted. You're
all organised for the weekend?

I'm ready to go mate. - You're sharing
a room with Temps, you know that?

Yeah I think I did that last time too
now didn't we? - Yeah it's a similar

arrangement this time - But are we in
a hotel this time, so it's just a walk

What do you mean in a hotel this time?
We weren't in tents last time.

Yeah I know but that bloody
apartment living wasn't very charming.

You know the Hilton was charming.
- You like room service mate.

Na I just like being able to get
the elevator down to the piss.

So my focus is to just, keep an
eye on the van, just follow the van?

Your focus in Tasmania, is
to do what you normally do

and to shit stir however many
people you have to shit stir.

Well I should be alright then.
That's not too far out of my resume.

Just your regular drill.
- That's my standard operandi

Eric's field of
friends are all diverse.

And none of us are connected
to anyone except through Eric.

So Eric's like here, and
then you've got Tony there and

you've got Temps there and Jacko
there. It's an amazing thing because

no one talks to anyone except
when Eric brings us all together.

His like secretary general
of the United Nations mate,

you know I'm calling a general
meeting mate you's all better turn up.

So we all bring our arses down
there and we say what's going on?

Last at this event back in
96 with a mate of mine and

made the um embarrassing comment
at the time that I will return.

I'll be back here every year for the rest
of my life. And that was eleven years ago.

So um I've finally,
finally made it back.

And I literally haven't forgotten
the event since then and had been

dreaming about coming back and doing it
um and the moons aligned so um here I am.

And it's all about just getting
out there and sharing the car and

hoping that people enjoy us um having
as much fun as we will be having.

I just keep scratching myself. I just can't
believe that I'm down here in the car and

that the car's finished. Got my old mate
Tony navigating for me so just can't wait.

After years of anticipation and literally
dreaming of this moment it was finally here.

But I had forgotten one thing.

A new race car never feels good
straight out of the work shop.

That was awful. It was just, felt so bad,
I can't believe how bad that felt.

I'm so spoilt driving race
cars on race tracks now.

And the first four or five corners I thought
I'm going to bring down the front suspension

I'm going to go straight into
a gutter here. But ah you know,

I probably under estimated how
slippery the green tyres would be.

Any danger signs other than the grip?

No I felt it straight away, I felt it like first
couple of corners. I just drove around it.

I knew it wasn't going to be quick
turning in or anything like that.

Cos it does actually turn in really
well, but it wasn't going to do it today.

Wasn't going to grab - Well like I said it's
only about getting the right priority today.

Next five days is what counts.

Yeah and we gotta try and sort out
a few little niggly things and...

already down the tour of Tas.

I think classic is great
because you don't have to

stress yourself to
get your Targa time.

And if you come here to just get your
plate, which is basically what drives me.

You can do it in a
classic car and have fun.

I honestly think it's only
as dangerous as you make it.

There's no doubt about I mentioned
before, Red Mist. It descends.

What brings it on quicker than anything is
the sight of the tail lights in the distance

You know you're halfway into
the stage and all of a sudden

you just catch a glimpse of
some tail lights in the distance.

Oh my god father I sure the navigator wants
to open the door and get out at that stage.

But that spurs you on.

But you only go, or I only go as
quick as I think I'm comfortable at.

I don't want to toss
this car into the trees.

More importantly I don't want to
toss my navigator into the trees.

There are 2 types of vehicle
in Targa, modern or classic.

You either pick a late model car with

every conceivable driver
aid and modern convenience

or something older with
shall we say more character.

Eric's car is it? - 8Might
bring back a few memories mate

Yep, yep, 77. I had my own one at Bathurst
- Was that the Melfords car?

That is just beautiful
- Have you seen the boot mate?

Beautiful. Who did all the work Eric? - A
guy in Melbourne by the name of Steve Young.

That is just beautiful.

Well for me I would rather compete
and win a Targa Tassie than Bathurst.

But having said that I've been to Bathurst
a lot of times and I've had some wins there.

So for a young guy
coming into motor sport

he'd probably much like
to go and win at Bathurst.

But Targa is a lot more satisfying
event because it's over five days.

Forty five individual races and
you're not racing against anyone,

you're racing against
yourself and the clock.

It really is a huge challenge when you look
at tarmac rallying as Jim just touched on.

I mean you don't know what
the conditions could be like

from the start of a stage
to the end of a stage.

You're not sure what
you're going to encounter.

And the fact that you've got to work
as a team. That's very important.

On the circuit you've just got the
driver and a car that's been prepared.

Where as when we get out there on the
roads it's very much a team effort.

He used to navigate by just getting
me to the start of the stage.

And then just basically,
sit like this and um

He is so, so full of shit.

It's true we never used to run with
pace notes and we did quite well.

And the first year we ran
with pace notes, we crash.

I'm not blaming him. It's
definitely both our fault.

If not my fault. But
the point I'm making is.

You can still go really quick
without pace notes and in fact it's

kind of enjoyable cos what I do is I
say to Tony is pretend your the driver

and look through the road and
tell me where you think it's going.

You know. So you
used to enjoy that? - No

8 right and a crest.

Then an 8 left. Looked
like an 8 left. No.

This could be the 8 left?
- No clue mate. I have no clue.

Off the note
- I'm really sorry about this

Just call what you see bud
and stay off the note. - Ok.

you got a right 9 by the looks.
Straight on there's a crest.

Can't see beyond the crest.
Looks like a right 8.

I honestly think that tarmac
rallying guys are dead set nuts.

Um we complain about a wall being too
close or a sand trap not being deep enough.

The level of safety we've got is I
don't think it could get much better.

And then you get these
rally guys that they do

the same speeds as what
we're doing on the race track.

And there is 4 foot round gum trees

2 feet off the road, all
the way. It's just insane.

I've never actually done a tarmac rally
at full speed like the guys do these days

but it's probably the most dangerous
form of motor sport there is.

Just about every year since 1906 theres
been a race held in these mountains.

And ever since the race has
been called the Targa Florio.

Day of the race the roads are closed but
for most of the other practice time on

the Targa there open to the general public
and this causes all sorts of excitement.

this is the section where I
usually have my practice accidents.

Two years ago in a Porsche I
hit an Alfa Romeo service car

and then last year ha
last year I hit a local.

The Targa Florio really
is a relic from the past.

But unfortunately I think
it's days are numbered.

Racing in Targa is as close as it gets
to the grass roots of motor racing.

Its like going back in time and
that's part of the attraction.

Safety is the driver and
navigators responsibility,

make a small mistake
and you could pay dearly.

The terrain is ever changing one
minute your on a flat out section

through fast following corners with
trees hugging the road and the next

your snaking your way through a small
country town littered with hay bails.

It's one of the last remaining races
of its type anywhere in the world.

The things that worry me is
just slipping off the road and

hitting a tree because there
is a lot of them out there.

In this game you know there is sort of

an element of your
number comes up you know

it is a game that at some point
you're going to fall off the road

thats just going to
happen whatever the cause

so just hope it happens
in a nice soft place.

You do measure this up from time to time
and the only thing that keeps you balanced

is probably a little bit of belief
sometimes, it's false belief that you're,

you may be better than you really are
but confidence is probably the key because

as soon as you second guess
yourself you know in a heartbeat

you're 300 meters off the
road and in an embankment.

Fortunately for us there wasn't anything
solid waiting at the edge of the road

it was just partial land, it was a long way
below the road so it was a bit evil knieval

out into the paddock back first couple
of end to ends five barrel rolls and

150 meters later we came to a
grinding halt in the paddock with

doors ripped off engines
hanging out wheels off and

basically the only part of the car that
was left was the part we were sitting in.

I ended up being in hospital for quite
a long time and off work for 6 months so,

What happened?
- Snapped my neck clean in half with

a, broken 4th vertebrae and
had fractures in 3,5,6 and 7.

Well I still race on the track I decided
that I wasn't right from the moment

I was in hospital I decided that I
wasn't going to stop living my life

but it did put a lot of
things in perspective and

gave me greater appreciation for silly
things in life like walking along the beach

and playing golf and all those
things that you do take for granted

Family?
- Yeah family the whole thing.

He's really responsible and I do know he
really thinks long and hard and carefully

about the safety aspect
of all of these races

and I just have never
felt it was my role to say

what he can and can't do all
I ask is that he, you know,

thinks about the kids and he really
takes that responsibility seriously.

But its down to him in the end and
he has to you know make that decision

and he does that on his own
and he puts a lot of work

and his heart and soul
into these races and

you know he gets a lot out of them,
so you gotta weigh all that up I guess.

When you have responsibilities and

when you have a family, you
have children for example.

It changes the risk reward
ratio for what you do.

Do I have the right to
put there father at risk

for the thrill the exhilaration
the excitement of what I'm doing.

Now as I said it doesn't mean
you drop out that you become,

a couch potato you know
you've still got to go out

and live your life and
take care of yourself.

You can cheat them out of
there father in other ways too,

if you lose your passion,
if you lose your zest for life

that spark in your eye,
that thrill that's there.

They don't get all of
there Dad that way either.

We had a really good day yesterday,

but I've got some mechanically
knowledge that Bana doesn't.

Our cam shaft is screwed. Its lost a lobe
and I don't know how far its going to go

I'm gonna have a chat to the boys about
picking up another cam shaft today.

We just want to get through.

Um but I don't have high
hopes for it to be honest.

When I grew up there was 3 TV
channels and you rode your bikes

street lights after dark,

and you know you kind of had roots.

And now we're getting
impinged by so many stimuli,

so much competing for
our time and attention.

That it's really hard for
us to focus on one thing

that becomes a main stay in our lives.

I mean we're living in the laser lane,
we're not living in the fast lane,

we're living in the laser lane. And there's
just not a lot of room for tradition,

there's not a lot of room for rituals,

there's not a lot of room for bonding
with objects and even people sometimes.

And I think that's tragic

That's part of his enjoyment to have
his, school friends involved in navigating

and co-ordinating things
and providing amusements

and distraction from the
pressure of the grind.

I'm really proud the way he has manged that
to include everyone and all his friends.

kilo's and then throw in

the added g-forces of coming
down a hill with acceleration

and throw in a wet surface and

you've got to have a hobby
you've got to have something that

your not in harness, you're not
working, it's just a labour of love.

And if you don't have that, you'll
be missing a lot of the excitement,

you'll miss a lot of the payoff
that comes from doing what

you want to do instead of

I had a real moment at Cygnet I was

starting to feel you

It came today and then

at the end of Cygnet it was weird

I turned to Tony and I said you

you know it was a really
really good stage for us

and then when we left and we were
driving off I felt really emotional

it was like Oh cool we're
like, what have we got?

2 stages left in the day and we're
gonna get, we're getting through day 3

and we're gonna be on the
road beginning of day 4 and

you know there's a lot of cars
getting worked on last night that

weren't here on the road this morning,
and I just really starting to feel

that sense of achievement by getting
the car through each day you know

day 4 I thinks going
to be the best day.

And then I'm about to do the
top bolt on the left hand side.

We have a brand new fuel
system into the car this year

and 1 of the fuel pumps decided

it wanted to have a sort
of a 15, 20 minute break.

That was enough to say
goodbye to our plate

so really our competitive
side finished yesterday,

we're just going to the finish
line and we want to have some fun

and set some good times
and just enjoy ourselves.

Most of this noise is being created
by the Classic guys that's for sure.

But we choose to drive Classic cos I
think this is what makes it good fun.

There was a guy called Charles Babbage who
invented the computer back in the 18th century,

who talked about the unerring
certainty of machinery.

Ok now the problem you
have is that when you have

the unerring certainty of
machinery it is a machine.

When something has foil
ables and wont handle properly

that gives it a particularly human
quality because it makes mistakes

and that's how you can build a relationship
with a car that other people wont get.

I would so hate to see someone drive
this car that didn't have respect for it

you know it's And today it just
felt like a dead set quarter horse

that was just ready to just kick
you off if you weren't onto your game

and I feel like everyday

What we've been doing
is being really patient

getting into a rhythm I'm being really

careful getting the
tires up to speed and

the up to temperature and
the brakes up to temperature.

Just trying to work our way
into the stage you know rather

than cos I feel like if you if you rush it
early and you have a bit of a moment early

it really sort of affects your
confidence for the rest of the stage.

We've set a sort of pace now
that we know we can maintain

and we cropped a heap of places
yesterday so I think if we just

do exactly like we did yesterday
and don't try and be heroes just

and finish we'll keep jumping places every
day and we will finish somewhere thats

half way decent so yeah
no hero stuff today for sure.

And it's a short day so we just want
to really enjoy ourselves alright

We crashed in the middle of the bush.
We're like in the middle of nowhere.

And these two guys in race
suits appear like Martians.

I go where the hell

He goes, that's our car
down the bottom of the hill.

I just can't believe I'm just not scratched,
we went in there pretty fuckin' hard.

Yeah it is, but,

not the sort of motor
racing I had in mind.

At the end of the day you
line up on the start line.

We're both two blokes who, you
know grew up pushing equipment,

pushing cars, driving on the limit.

Yeah I'm gonna have what I
think is a level of reserve,

but we're still going to be going
hard. We're in a car with over 500 HP.

And at the end of the day, even if you
drive that car slow, it's still bloody fast!

Yeah well the category I race in you
have to keep the original suspension,

pick up points and geometry.

- I didn't think I was,

but then this happened.

Well now you see I could
have predicted that.

You look at this and
you think yeah I've,

it's a muscle car and I've
driven a lot of muscle cars.

Callaway Corvettes Chargers
Challengers Mustang 390 GT's

and they all look fantastic
but all muscle cars are crap!

They just are.

They don't handle properly. They look
good they sound good but you know.

You go past RAF bases in Australia do
they have like planes on plinth's outside?

Yeah, yeah, yeah - Some cars I've
decided are born to be put on a plinth.

You can see the quarter panels gone.

The steering's completely ripped
out of and broken out of the car.

The diff watt's linkages have been
completely ripped out of the car.

Rear chassis rails
are completely gone.

It's damaged all the boot
area so the whole chassis

had a constantina effect
through the whole roll cage.

So it's basically, virtually all the 3000
hours that we've done it's start again.

Um and unfortunately what's happened
is because the cars been so customised.

Although it pretty much
looks like a standard,

XB every components
basically been customised.

So it's a huge job again.

I feel worse today then I did,
when I crashed the car yeah.

I basically feel like today I
found out that I did kill the car.

Confirmed. You know, and in a
way I would have been better to

have felt like that
happened on the day,

as opposed to walking
away from the car thinking,

front right hand corners done and
a bit of the rear ends been done.

That's what I've been
thinking the last month.

I, I really didn't seriously think
that I could've actually killed it.

I would so much rather have a
broken arm to be completely honest.

I would so much rather be on crutches
right now, for a couple of months,

or a few months, it would feel so
much better then, then this scenario.

One part of your situation is,
you had somebody build this car?

No only this time. The last 3
times me and my buddies did it.

I know but the last 3 times
you didn't crack it up.

Yeah
- Somebody else built this car.

Like you, you're afraid to tell
the guy who built it what happened.

Correct? - Yeah I was
- Because it's his car, he built it.

If you put all the blood sweat and tears
into this car you wouldn't have hit the tree

You think so? - Yeah it's like a rental car,
you take it out and beat the hell out of it.

What do you care? You know?

Safe to say that if you were ever going
to consider doing an event like that again,

you would just have to do it in
a car that you have absolutely

no respect for, other than
as a performance vehicle.

But no emotional attachment.
You'd be an absolute fool

to do that sort of event in
a car that you cared about.

Mate I don't know how he put that
thing back together the first time.

He had a 15 dollar socket set and
it was one of those 3/8 driver,

it wasn't even a � inch drive set. And
he put the whole car together with that.

A pair of pliers, a shifter
and a flat screwdriver.

It's an amazing feat when
you think about it now.

But he just, He loved it.
He was so in love with that car.

And even through some of
his hardships that he had.

Through working and not
working and trying to get work.

He always managed to keep
that car and not sell it.

And it's been a really good
thing that he's hung onto it.

Not many people have had a car from
their childhood for that many years.

The feeling I'm getting from this
car is that, the love is in the car.

It's got the good spirits happening.
- Yeah

And I'm actually looking to do
something in that direction. - Right

And It's about finding a car that's not just
the coupe but it's a coupe that's been loved

Right-o - You know. And it's
got a bit of feeling behind it

Yeah - And I'm in a position that if I could
find a car that someone would give me.

I would do what I. I would
probably share the project with them

Yeah sure
- And say look. You give me the car.

Like not give it to me. Sell me the car
and I'll build it the way you envision it.

Because I'm looking
for a partnership. - Right

And that's something that really, really
interests me in this car now, because,

with talking to you now
Darryl I can see that,

it's in your eyes mate, this
car is just part of your blood.

But it's almost like having
a child that you got to

send away to private school
to get a good education.

That's very true, yeah, that's true - You
know, you have to consider the decision.

Now I can't take your
memories away from ya

No, they there forever

But what I can do, is make this
car into something you wish it was.

Oh yeah if I seen it going down the
road I'd be wishin' that it was mine

and find another one to buy is another

If he sold that, then what would he

and I loved them things before then

My father also has a car.

He has a 67 Thunderbird that
he's owned my whole life.

Since I was a young kid.
And he really doesn't use it.

In fact the last time he drove it
was on my wedding day 10 years ago.

It sits in the garage with a cover on it,
getting cobwebs, leaves the whole deal.

He doesn't even look at the
car and he doesn't drive it.

Why would someone wanna
maintain a possession like that.

When they don't actually get
any direct enjoyment from it?

Well you're assuming he doesn't get any
direct enjoyment from it and it's wrong.

It's a spiritual enjoyment.
He knows it's there.

It's like an anchor It's like a rock.

He knows it's there and the fact
that he doesn't go sit in it,

or drive it everyday is not important.

What's important is
he's hung on to this and

it probably has a important
spiritual meaning for him.

You don't have to drive it everyday
for it to be important to you.

You don't have to drive it ever again.
I mean as long as he knows it's there.

That's a part of him. That's a piece
of him and it's important to him.

The future of the T-Bird?

There will be no more future
very soon that's being sold.

I think it, you know, another young guy
like Eric was that's a fanatic with cars.

I think they'd get a lot
more enjoyment out of it.

All they'd have to do is rebuild the
engine and make it work, make it drive.

Which it hasn't done for years.

There's a cover over it
for the last 10 years.

What's, what's the joy of
taking up all that space

in the garage when we could put our
other car in it. That's drivable.

You know, yeah anythings
repairable technically speaking.

Technically speaking you
could create out of sand

a whole other new car.

It doesn't mean that you go and
do it though does it, you know,

I think he's confused about where
to, where to take the car from here.

And it's about where he
is in his life too, too.

I mean how much more
focus can you put on it at

this stage of your life with
so many other things happening

I think he's a bit deflated at the moment.
I think he doesn't want to think about it.

Just wants to leave it in a
corner put a cover over it.

Don't walk around thinking oh me
baby's hurt, that's the way it is.

If you really love it, you'll fix it.

If I was to not fix this car.

And it was no longer
a part of my life.

Do you think that would be
something that I would actually

have some kind of reaction to?

You would have a
strong sense of betrayal

if you put these parts in a box,

slid em under a work bench in a
deserted garage and forgot them.

And let me tell you why.

You must honour the
continuity in your life.

This is a car that was everything
in the world to you when you got it.

It was first for you.
It gave you that independence.

It gave you that mobility.
It gave you that identity.

It came through that
maze of life with you.

I think it's the,
the reality that it's

as big a job to fix this as
it was to restore it. You know.

So I know it's probably,
a good, a good you know

at least 12 months of you know
hard labour in fixing the car.
