in the morning.

All our guests are asleep.

I'm gonna head out
on a recon flight

in order to find
the best Discovery program
for our guys

as well as for our guests.

Weather is closing in,

so we're gonna
get this done quick.

In the galley,

Jed has been working since
just after 4:00 a.m.

With Christmas approaching,

he's hoping to impress
Chef Tom and the guests

with some innovative treats.

Okay, what is the weirdest
cookie you have?

So, currently, I have, uh,
paprika pepper,

chili, this is plain,

this is raspberry, cinnamon,

pistachio and
coconut macaroon.

So, uh, I think you love,
like, spices,

so you can try
this paprika pepper.

This is exactly what I need
at 5:30 in the morning.

The spice
sticks out, Chef.

It's good. It's kicking.

It is.

But I think it's fun. I mean,

everybody knows
regular cookies.

We deliver regular cookies,

but let's also give them
something crazy.

Yes, Chef.

So we're planning to do, uh,
a whole cookie bar.

So, uh, we can remove
everything from the shelves
of the Azure Cafe,

and we're gonna set up
something around 24 to 25
different cookies.

It's easy to buy something,

but I think
it's so much better.

If the chefs
know we do it fresh,

the guests can
feel the difference,
and this is what we want.

We wanna be
the best ship in the world,

and to do that,
we've gotta make 450 cookies

at 5:30 in the morning.

So,
how was the flight?

It was good.
It was really successful.

I was able to recon
that remote beach landing

-that we've been
talking about wanting to get.

a beautiful cove

that'll be good protection

for the kayakers and
paddleboarders as well too.

during the morning excursions

helicopter reconnaissance.

We're here just to
enjoy ourselves.

We'll be on the water
for between an hour,

I can't believe
how lucky we get

they seem to pull up
at the optimum time.

How can you complain
on a day like today?

Pretty amazing.

We got the glossy waters,

birds in the sky,

icebergs all around.
It's awesome.

Here in Antarctica,

ice is everywhere.

Young ice, growlers,

bergy bits and many more.

This is brash ice,

small pieces formed from
the wreckage of other ice,

on its final journey before
it melts into the ocean.

Just paddling
through the,

almost like a sculpture
highway through there,

all the different
beautifully-shaped
and sculpted icebergs.

It's definitely a seal.

It's fantastic.
Fabulous experience.

Back on
Scenic Eclipse,

Chef Tom is delivering
Jed's cookies

to Azure cafe.

excitement as our guests.

It's really impressive.

This is one of the, um,

most exciting experiences.

it's just a good surprise.

takes a minimum
of 10,000 years, okay,

pure, clean, fresh water.

What we'll do is
we'll go through this
brash ice in here.

On the west side
of the Antarctic Peninsula.

And this side of the Peninsula

is, unfortunately,
really feeling the effects
of climate change.

Yeah. Even, like,
this is getting warm.

This is warmer weather
than it was, what,
20, 30 years ago.

Absolutely.
And, you know,

the thing with those
warmer temperatures,

not only is it
affecting the ice

but the Southern Ocean now
has become

the fastest-warming ocean
in the world.

Scenic Eclipse
has arrived at Danco Island.

Before the next land-based
guest expedition can occur,

the environment must be
thoroughly assessed.

Discovery team members
Helena and Jon

are joining a group
heading to Danco island

to mark out
a potential hiking trail

free of any
hazardous crevasses.

- All right.
Beautiful, yeah.
-Yeah.

- Light's opened up.
- Beautiful.

Yeah.

Crevasses are a risk
anywhere that you have
ice-covered ground,

and there's an ice cap
here at Danco.

So we know the main site
of the crevasses

is off to the south side
of the island,

but, fundamentally,
it's very low risk if we, uh,

if we set the proper trail,
take the proper precautions,

uh, then we can make sure
that everyone has
a safe experience out there.

So Pepe's gonna set the flags
on this section, right,

and then we'll set them
from the top

when we start
getting into the snowfall.

Yeah, sounds good. Once
we get into the switchbacks.

-For now...
-And I think we should,

just need to prep
that top section.

I think the rest
is gonna be fairly clear.

Yeah, this is still
nice, gentle, as far as
slopes go as well.

These birds are
feeding heavily on krill.

And what you see there
is basically processed krill.

Everything in Antarctic
and the Southern Ocean waters

depends heavily on krill.

So, right now,
what I'm going to do is

I'm going to set
a perimeter around here

which will be following
our guidance with...

to be a good distance
from these birds

which are nesting,
they are sitting on eggs.

We wanna reduce
our impact on these birds.

We don't wanna
interfere with their cycles.

With the assessment
and planning complete,

the guests' expedition
of Danco Island can begin.

sort of, survive out here

The expedition
is a success

and, crucially,
the penguins left undisturbed.

It is imperative that
they leave every environment

as clean as they find them,

as true for the ship
as it is for the expeditions.

Scenic Eclipse
processes approximately

100-times of gray
and black water each day.

The combined waste water

is fed through an advanced
waste water treatment system

that uses bacteria
to consume the contaminants.

The water that emerges

is clean enough to be
discharged overboard

at a distance of four
nautical miles from land.

It's the start
of the penultimate day.

Scenic Eclipse
is making her way
to the Lemaire Channel,

also known as Kodak Gap.

The plan this morning is to
sail through one of the most

amazing navigation here
in the Antarctic Peninsula,

the Lemaire Channel.

People will have
this, um, vision

of, uh, how majestic
is Antarctica

because they will feel
very small on the ship

with these glaciers
and mountains around.

The sheltered
waters of the passage

are usually still as a lake,

but this brings with it
an added danger.

You have always
few big icebergs

that, uh, get stuck
in the passage.

We'll have to, uh,
to sail in between

and reduce speed and adjust.

Okay, so we're going to leave
the peak port end.

We're going to leave
the peak on our portside

and the medium size
on the starboard.

I'll turn
a little bit after
to port end behind

because you can see
the two pieces behind.

- Big chips.
- Big chips.

With navigation
in the first ice-filled
passage complete,

the guests can begin
to capture Kodak Gap.

Welcome to
the Lemaire Channel.

One of the most
impressive places
on the planet.

About eight miles
of navigation

through this
very narrow passage.

So do not miss it.

This area is rich
with both natural beauty

and historical importance.

The Lemaire Channel
was first discovered
in the 1870s

by a German expedition

and then named in 1898 by
the Belgian expedition
by Gerlache.

He was the first
to come through
this area.

And on that ship
there were these men

who had little
box-brownie cameras,
little cameras

and they were taking
amazing photographs.

And it was just,
click, click, click
all the way,

and it's a sort of a
minor Antarctic tradition

that we're
continuing today
many, many years later.

Just amazing.

-Yeah, re-align,
re-align just...
-Mm-hmm.

- A little bit better.
- Yes.

At its
narrowest point,

the Lemaire Channel
is just 1.6 kms wide.

And with more
icebergs approaching,

Captain Erwan is
extremely conscious
of the ship's positioning.

Probably a slight lift
to starboard?

The Azipods
are so important

because they,
they going to be
able to assist us,

in case I need to
really turn sharp,

or if I need to stop.

It's incredible,
the maneuverability
we have with the pods.

Scenic Eclipse's Azipods
are electrical drives

contained inside steel tubes
at the stern of the ship.

Each Azipod can
rotate 360 degrees,

allowing the captain
to point the propellors
in any direction needed.

Scenic Eclipse is
also fitted with
ice-rated propellors,

designed to safely
deal with ice

running through
the propulsion system.

So we stopped,
we stopped just

at the rim
of the wind, huh?

-Yeah.
-And we keep
an eye on this

-because it's supposed to be
increasing during the day.
-Yes.

-So we keep
an eye on that.

a big grounded-out area
full of icebergs.

It's a great indicator
of where your feet
should be.

That will keep you
connected to the board

The difference between
paddling in a warm climate

vs Antarctica
is substantial.

Here you have glaciers,
you have icebergs.

Your penguin's
porpoising beside you.

It's unbelievable.

It's almost
a sensory overload.

is Pleneau Island.

We've transit through
the Lemaire Channel
this morning

and we'll have
some really nice,
incredible icebergs.

We have our
gentoo penguin colonies

and we have our
seal species.

the best and the biggest,

so we decided to
make a ship.

We've quite a bit

It seems like it goes

we do the big parts.

to actually find the spot
where we can

carry it up to the lobby

The final day
of the cruise
has just begun.

his culinary team

are dealing with
a sizeable problem.

from Jason's mind.

He is preparing
for one of Scenic Eclipse's
most beloved,

yet heart-pounding
guest experiences.

So we're working on
setting up the marina
right now

for the polar plunge

and so as you can see
the boys are getting
it all set up.

We got Jordan out there
in the Zodiac,

working on pushing that
pan ice out of the way.

The polar plunge
is basically

that people will
come around,

they'll get strapped up
onto a harness

and they would jump straight
into the Antarctic waters.

Really quickly,
just before we have
the guests coming down,

I just want
to make sure,

in regards for
the guests' safety,

if you see anything,
remember, we all
have a voice

to do an all-stop, okay?

That's the most
important thing
out there.

But let's have
fun with it.

Today is the polar plunge

which is really exciting.
Everybody loves this day.

So I'm up here,
getting everybody
to their groups,

getting them excited
before they head down
to the Marina

and then jump into
the icy cold waters
of Antarctica.

You have to do
the polar plunge
in Antarctica.

It's just...
It's a rite of passage.

I didn't know about it
till I got on the boat.

So...

You're gonna be absolutely fine.

we love also,
anytime we have
the opportunity

to have the crew
to participate to
these kind of activities.

which, for me,
is the main, main thing.

as people are pretending
that it is.

and start a new journey.

Do you realize
all the sea life
that's gonna come up?

Their mouths watering
looking at it.

I think a lot of people
think about the ocean
in a very bad way.

You go on a cruise,

you have 10 days
to eat as much
as you can

and drink as you can,

see as many
possible places
as you can,

and just, you know,
go home

have 10 pounds more
and be, kind of,
proud about it

and I terribly hate that.

I think the ocean
has much more to offer.

My big mission
is literally to not just
transform the chefs...

a new journey.
