I think I should explain to you two
why we put a hold on the Carstairs case.

The only evidence we got was
semen found on Carstairs' body.

to raise a DNA profile,

but we couldn't get a
match on the database.

Ten weeks before he died, Carstairs

Carstairs was a regular at that car park.

solicitor alleged they were fitted up.

MEL: And the reason we never found Penn
was because when the case was dropped,

he disappeared.

SPENCER: And when he appeared
in court, the CPS offered no evidence.

So, you'd assume some
police intervention there.

But we only had written
statements from the arresting officer,

so I think this time we
should get him in and grill him.

- Okay, and we need to find Penn.

So, I think you two are
pretty much up to date, then.

I can confirm that the DNA
from the semen on Barac's body

is a match to the sample
of semen on Carstairs.

Which means that Carstairs and
Barac were killed by the same man.

Normally you'd think so, yeah,

but the bite mark is consistent with that
of a woman according to jaw size and DNA.

I can't be certain
at this stage,

but, in fact, all the secretions found on
the body and the bed point to a woman.

So, you're saying that more
than one person was involved?

- A woman who bites, a man who kills.
- Could be a woman who kills.

I set off in immediate pursuit, caught
him and walked him back to the car.

Gill was restraining Carstairs.

but we could have made a
mistake about where he was sitting.

They obviously wanted
to secure an arrest.

Who or what made the charges
against these men disappear?

That is the question.

Well, maybe the CPS
dropped the case because

they sensed something
was inaccurate.

What was inaccurate?
The written statements

from the arresting
officers weren't inaccurate.

We didn't know they were inaccurate
until we got them in, interrogated them,

and found out they were lying.

Yeah, but we fell for
it, though, didn't we?

Okay, so maybe the
CPS is being leaned on,

to protect Carstairs and Penn.

BOYD: Or... GRACE: To protect
the third person who ran away.

historic data on Carstairs and Penn.

WOMAN: And you think it might have been
done by the same man who killed James?

It's possible, yeah. There are
certain similarities between the cases.

But I thought your investigation
had drawn a blank six months ago.

we're looking for a woman who is
drawn to acting out her sexual fantasies.

Sexual fantasies are crafted to
suit individual psychological needs.

So, what is this woman's need?

Probably to recreate
early sexual experience.

But that doesn't presuppose that the
early sexual experience was a positive one.

It's far more likely to
have been traumatic,

and it indicates a sort
of indelible scar that

she is forced to act
out over and over again.

And the only way
she can attain sexual

gratification is to
role-play the initial trauma.

Uh, the bite
marks, for instance.

It's too much of a coincidence
to come across two men

who want to be bitten
in the same way, so we

can assume that
that's significant for her.

Now, the bite itself is always
on the same part of the hand.

Now, why would a woman
bite a man in that way?

- Are you asking me?
- Mmm.

Oh, um, I don't know. Because
she's gagged, or she's suffocated?

Yeah, good. We agree.

And the repetition
suggests it's ritualistic for

her. It's part of a
scenario that's familiar.

Right. So, she's gagged as a
child, silenced by a man's hand,

and as you say, these sexual
predilections are formed at an early age.

Grace and I both
agree, and we think

it's likely that this woman was silenced
during a sexual act when she was young.

What age are we talking about?

Well, given that she was
silenced, would indicate she was

involved against her will,
so she wanted to scream out,

but she had to be silenced.

Indicating that she was
possibly a young child at the time.

Hmm. So, what
about the tying up?

Well, the possibility is that
as a child she was constrained,

but her own pathology drives
her to constrain them. It's revenge.

Peter, okay to borrow

So, it's the man, is it, that
would be doing the tying up?

Well, we think that's unlikely.

You couldn't expect someone like
Barac to give in without a struggle,

and there was no sign

and they were killed later
by somebody totally different.

So, they're working as a
team, they know each other.
