All language subtitles for 02 - How to install and things to know

- [Instructor] Blender is free and open source

and has a wide range of compatibility

depending on your operating system and computer.

To download it, simply go to blender.org.

From here, you'll be greeted by a nice big download button.

Now at the time of this course recording,

we're just in the Blender 4.0 series.

In the future, it might say Blender 4.1 or 4.2.

And if those updates are incremental, generally speaking,

all the things that you learn in this course

can apply to those future versions.

As major versions release,

I'll be sure to update this essential training

so that we're always on top

of the latest and greatest updates.

From here, just click on Download.

Depending on your computer,

you'll see a download Blender 4,

which will download a nice installer.

If you need to, you can come down here

and install different versions.

For example, if you're on MacOS,

maybe you need an Intel or the M1 or M2, et cetera,

Apple Silicon version.

You can even grab it from Steam and it'll update it for you

and pick the right version.

For those of you in industry

and you need a little bit more long-term support,

Blender does offer something called LTS,

Blender Long-Term Support.

The last version was 3.6,

and in this course we're going to cover 4.0,

but this is something to think about

if you have an educational institution

or a large commercial studio

and you need support with future updates and bug fixes.

Once you install and run Blender,

you'll be greeted by this nice new splash screen.

From here, you'll have a bunch

of different settings that you can pick.

For example, you can change your language.

Another thing you can do is change

to Maya/ZBrush Autodesk shortcuts.

But for this course,

we're going to stick to the Blender default shortcuts.

I like selecting with Left,

keeping the Space Bar as play,

but the theme might be helpful for you.

You can go ahead and change it

to any kind of theme that you want.

Another thing that might be valuable is to come up to Edit

and go to Preferences.

From here, you can change your resolution scale

to make Blender a lot bigger so that it's easier to read.

Under System, you may have the option

to turn on rendering hardware,

so that way you go a lot faster.

And you can even add more undoes if you'd like.

Finally, you can click on input

and you'll see something that says Emulate Numpad

and Emulate 3 Button Mouse.

In this course, we won't really be using the Numpad,

but it is really helpful

if you want to quickly change your views.

But we will be using a three button mouse,

so if you don't have a three button mouse,

you could use this option.

But honestly,

I highly recommend you use Blender

with a three button mouse.

There is so much more that you can do.

Once you're done, you can come down to the bottom left

and just save your preferences.
