The SS were convinced
the Soviets would kill them,

and we, that the SS would kill us
before the Russians arrived.

Those who had survived the march,

but in a poor state, were executed.

There were few women.

And men who hadn't seen women
for a long time.

The SS tried to find women too

when the issue
wasn't raised with Jews before.

For them, it was forbidden.

But there were no more rules.

Some tried to escape by any means.

But no one could cross the lines.

Those who escaped came back.

It was the end.

As the artillery fire drew closer,

the SS managed to find trains
to take us away.

The men and women were separated again

and we left for Mauthausen.

But there was no room there.

So we kept going.

We were in low, open wood wagons.

There were so many of us,
we could barely sit.

We feared that, in fighting,

we could be pushed out of the wagon.

The SS machine guns on the roofs
would have executed us instantly.

Many died of hunger and cold
in those wagons.

At each station,
they removed the corpses,

leaving them on the platforms.

Nearing Prague,
we passed close by the houses.

People threw bread from windows
or gave us water in the stations

when the SS looked away.

That's how we survived.

It was different in Austria.

Then came Germany.

We were 35 women from Auschwitz,
with a few gypsy women

who had been put with us.

When we arrived in Dora,

one of those women gave birth.

The baby was killed immediately.

The mother survived.

The next day, we left for Bergen-Belsen
in a closed wagon.

In Bergen-Belsen, from late January,

the Russian advance increased.

Things became worse.

Prisoners arrived from all over,
on foot, in terrible conditions.

There was no roll-call there.

Few people worked.

People were dying in their masses,

either of hunger or typhus.

I heard that, towards the end,
women took shoes from corpses

to eat them.

We didn't work.

We tried to work.

It was the only way to get food.

Those who couldn't had nothing.

Eat, Milou.

Eat.

You must eat too, Simone.

That's where I found
that Polish kapo again.

She recognized me

and helped me a second time.

Milou...

Simone...

Do good.

Don't wish others harm.

Without any care,
Mum lasted as long as she could.

All we could do
was give her a few scraps of food.

The days passed and, powerless,
we witnessed

the slow death of the woman
we loved more than anyone.

Where's Mum?

Mum has gone.

It's for the best.

I have never been able

to accept her death.

I see Mum every day.

She left early in the morning.

They took her body.

I never said goodbye.

She has never vanished.

She still stands by my side.

She is my strength

and my model.

More generous than me,

more indulgent...

gentler,

and calmer too.

Everything I have ever done

was thanks to her.

Every struggle

was her.

For her.

By her hand.

Mum.

Mummy!

Jump!

Mummy, look at me!

Yes, honey, I see you.

Out of the way!

Jean!

Jean, mind your sister.

Stop it!

Mummy, where's Daddy?

On the beach.

Come on in!

How can I define memory?

It stands apart from history

through its direct, personal aspect

or through a family intermediation

with a past event,
heavy with consequences.

For two or three generations,

memory and history are closely bound.

This memory is not just contemplative

or made up of information.

It cannot be totally objective

as it constitutes
a form of consciousness,

a form of identity.

Like it or not,

aware or not, we're responsible

for what will unite us all tomorrow.

We are made of what preceded us

and what commits us to the future.

Memory primarily haunts the witnesses,

or, rather, the victims,

those of us who survived,

who experienced the suffering
some say is over,

but that never truly ends.

And will not end

until we are no more.

Throughout my life,
attention to others' suffering

has dictated my behaviour

on a political level

and a personal one.

Now, when I hear
reassessments of the past

that, whatever their legitimacy,

trivialize the Shoah
as something to put into perspective

and consign to the dungeons of History,

I truly wonder if our society
is not losing its way

and confusing all struggles,

confusing rights and duties,

confusing falsehood and truth,

leading today's youth
along the paths of hatred,

racism,

antisemitism

and xenophobia.

UNITED IN DIVERSITY

There are many false prophets today
in France, Europe and the world

to lead the weakest among us
along those paths.

Our task is to thwart them.
