Elizabeth knew
she could manipulate people.

You can't argue with somebody
that's drunk or in love.

She kinda wrung
Mike around like a rag.

The crime was so heinous,
so senseless.

Karen was a prominent figure

in Lexington's
drag gay bar scene.

Karen is the dealer

and Elizabeth's like
her favorite customer.

A lead like this is gigantic.
This is a shifter.

If he was out of the way,

they could be
together forever.

Elizabeth is pushing
every button that night.

This is the final lie.

[Erica Friis] Lexington
is a really beautiful, small city.

It's in the heart
of the Bluegrass region

here in Kentucky.

[Nancy Cox]The University of Kentucky

is pretty much
Lexington's main identity.

People from
all over the States

send their children
to Lexington

just to attend
the University of Kentucky.

But in the mid-1980s
a wild child came to campus

and her arrival
would wreak such havoc

that a young man
would end up dead.

In August of 1984,
Michael Turpin is beginning

his senior year
at the University of Kentucky.

He is what I would consider
an all-American type student.

He is studious.
He is on the honor roll.

He is the guy
every father hopes their daughter brings home.

He was handsome, popular.

He was an accounting major,

and had a very bright future.

[Friis] He is a higher up
in the University of Kentucky marching band,

so he is checking in
the new recruits,

and he meets at that time

a girl named
Elizabeth Zehnder.

[Cox] Elizabeth
was cute, vivacious.

She was charismatic
for someone so young and only 18 years of age.

She'd walk into a party
and instantly be the center of attention.

He was looking down the line
of prospective band members

and he told me
"The first thing I saw of Beth was her legs."

It caught his eye
and he just had to meet her at that point.

[Friis] She had
a short haircut.

She listened
to punk rock music.

She looked different,

and she looked exciting
and a little dangerous,

and I think that
he was attracted to that right off the bat.

The thing about Elizabeth
is according to the people

who knew her best,
is that as a child

she was pretty rebellious

and kind of maybe
a little hard to control.

Had a mind of her own,
very strong-willed.

[Friis] She moved into being
a rebellious teenager.

She was involved
with hard drugs

from a pretty early onset.

She was also precocious
and promiscuous.

Elizabeth learned
she could talk her way out of just about anything.

People wanted
to believe Elizabeth

because she represented
to them

this charismatic person

and when that energy
was turned toward them,

she made them feel special.

Mike fell for her
very quickly.

[Friis] Within a week,
they're considered an item.

So things started
to escalate very quickly.

But their approach to college
was very different.

Mike was a senior,

so he was wrapping up
his college life

and looking toward a career.

Elizabeth was a freshman.

It became clear very early on,
in a matter of weeks

that Elizabeth viewed college
as a chance to be independent,

and basically party
as much as she wanted to.

[Friis] But, she is not
able to handle

any sort of
a work-life balance,

so she drops out
after the first semester.

Which really puts her
at odds with Mike in a lot of ways.

[David Lyons] People who have
watched the relationship,

family and friends,
didn't care much for it.

They had strong reservations
about the relationship.

They had reservations
about Elizabeth.

[Stacy Kaiser] Mike may think
he can change Elizabeth

in to the person
his friends and family expect.

College is often a time

where passion and love
mean everything.

If there's
an instant connection,

it means we are supposed
to be together

and I can fix the person
that I am with.

[Friis] After she had
dropped out of college,

Elizabeth goes home
over the Christmas break in December

and absence makes
the heart grow fonder

because when
she came back to visit in January,

Mike had really missed her

and had realized that
he really wanted to marry her.

So, he takes her
to a romantic restaurant in downtown Lexington

and he proposes,
just five months after they had met.

[Fleischer]I was very shocked.

The proposal
came out of nowhere.

I weren't expecting
that to happen.

There's that old saying,
you can't argue with someone that's drunk or in love,

and he definitely was in love.

The marriage finally occurred
on August 24th 1985,

at a church
in Lexington, Kentucky.

Mike was 22, she was 19.

Just a few years difference.

But probably
the most profound thing

was the lack of maturity
that she had compared to Mike.

After the marriage
it did not take long for things to sour.

Mike was at a point
he was ready

to settle down
and begin this career that he had been working for.

Elizabeth wanted the party

that started
for her in college to continue.

Mike is behaving
like the grown-up,

trying to tell Elizabeth
how to behave,

and that often
kills the intimacy in a relationship

and also causes
anger and conflict.

Mike and Elizabeth
have such different approaches

to money as well.

Mike was a classic saver

and Elizabeth
was a classic spender.

They were in debt.

They were maxing out
credit cards.

He kept having to spend
to really make her happy,

and she was never
quite happy enough.

Mike is told by her
that he needs to start making more money at his job

as an accountant
at the one-hour photo shop,

and so to do that
he starts skimming the top and taking money,

embezzling to be able
to make her happy.

[Kaiser] It sounds like
Elizabeth is taking advantage

of how besotted
Mike is with her

to manipulate him
into breaking the law.

Sometimes love is blind,
and people do things

they wouldn't do
because of it.

Elizabeth realizes that
she needs to start

contributing
some money as well,

so she gets a job
at a local car dealership in sales.

And she's great.
She's a smooth talker.

She's good with people.

She knows
what they wanna hear.

At the dealership,
she meets another employee,

a car detailer,
somebody who preps cars,

and cleans cars,
named Karen Brown.

Karen Brown was from
a very small town in Kentucky,

very bright young woman.

She was homosexual.

That was never accepted
in her small town

or in much of Kentucky
in 1985,

but she moved to Lexington

where there was a community

where she was welcomed.

[Friis] Karen falls
into this side hustle,

where she's selling
cocaine and marijuana

and she becomes
a prominent figure

in Lexington's
drag gay bar scene.

Elizabeth and Karen
immediately hit it off.

They both share
a love of drugs.

So, Karen is the dealer,
and Elizabeth's like her favorite customer.

And Karen was exciting

and Elizabeth
craved excitement.

So it was a natural connection
between the two.

[Cox] They began partying

with some others
from the dealership,

including a young man
named Keith Bouchard

from Lexington.

He was sometimes mechanic,

sometimes a car detailer.

[Friis]Keith Bouchard is ex-army.
He's 21 years old.

He was fun to be around
because he also really liked

to party and be a part
of the scene back then, too.

If Mike had any hopes
that having a job

would settle Elizabeth down,

he was very mistaken.

She and Karen clearly
just have a good time in each other's company.

It seems like
the more Mike asked Elizabeth to calm down,

the more brazen and defensive
she got about that.

Lord knows it was
breaking him financially and probably emotionally.

[Fleischer]After a few months,

I went over
to Mike's apartment

and, you know, he was just...
He was pretty down.

Beth was out
partying a lot.

She was being
kind of demanding.

At that point,
I was kind of concerned.

[Lyons] As time goes on
the relationship between

Karen and Elizabeth
starts to change a little bit

from Karen's perspective.

Karen finds
Elizabeth very attractive

and evidently starts
to have a lot of

emotional feelings
for Elizabeth.

She fell hard,
and before you knew it,

Karen was very much
in love with Elizabeth.

Elizabeth didn't
dissuade those feelings.

[Friis] About a month
after they meet,

Elizabeth starts telling
Karen and Keith

that she is both physically
and verbally abused by Mike.

She says that Mike
doesn't like her being out at all hours of the night,

and whenever she comes back
to their apartment,

he hits her,
he calls her names,

he makes her feel
bad about herself.

[Cox] Karen
was very angry about that.

She loved Elizabeth,

and the thought of Michael
hurting her physically

or torturing her
psychologically,

that enraged Karen.

I think Keith Bouchard

felt like the protector
of his little group.

So, when he heard
Elizabeth say

that Michael was hurting her,

he also became very angry.

It did not sit well with him.

[Cox] In late January 1986,
they were partying

and Elizabeth began to start
dropping hints to Karen,

"I trust you so much.
I rely on you. I need you."

And then she got into
saying things like,

"You're almost
taking the place of my husband."

And gradually
she indicated to Karen,

that she could
fall in love with her, too,

if not for Mike.

That was like
dangling a carrot to Karen.

Now, she heard
that glimmer of hope,

and only one thing
stood in the way

of potentially
the love of her life,

and that was Michael Turpin.

[Friis] At around 6:20 a.m,
on February 3rd of 1986...

[phone ringing]

...police receive a call

from the next-door neighbors

of Elizabeth
and Michael Turpin.

The neighbors
had claimed that

Elizabeth had shown up
at their front door

saying that there was blood
all over her apartment

and Michael was missing

and she didn't know
what to do.

Elizabeth tells the neighbor
that she was out partying the night before

that's why
she had just gotten home,

and she was confused
as to where Michael was,

but she knows that
she needs to call the police.

[Lyons] The police
respond to the scene

and they observe everything

and immediately
they want to have somebody

from the detective bureau
come out and take a peek.

So, that's when
then Sergeant Fran Root

is called in
and arrives at the scene.

[Fran Root] The first thing
that you notice

when entering the apartment

was the good amount of blood
on the entry,

and there was some other
blood spatters

and smears on the walls.

Most interesting to us is that

there was a tennis shoe print
in the blood.

So, we were hoping
that we would be able to match it up to something.

Very quickly we found
in the apartment Mike's wallet

along with keys to his car.

There was some money
in the wallet,

so that kinda
rules out a robbery,

and his car was in its
regular parking spot.

His possessions were still
inside the apartment,

leading investigators
to assume

that he did not plan to leave.

We let Elizabeth
look around the apartment just enough.

She assured us
that it didn't appear that anything was missing,

except for possibly
Mike's green bathrobe.

[Lyons] When Detective Root
gets to talk to Elizabeth,

she relays pretty much
the same story

that she gave
the neighbors.

She'd been out
the night before,

she adds that
it was with her friends,

Karen and Keith Bouchard.

They had gone
to a bar in Lexington called The Circus.

Karen had performed
in a drag show,

and when she was ready
to go home

it was raining really bad
and she elected to stay over at Karen's house that night.

When detectives ask her

what she thinks
might have happened to Mike,

she's very quick
to tell the story

about how Mike
was involved in drugs,

that he's part
of a local drug syndicate called The Family,

that he has
a street name of "Shark."

[Lyons] She goes
into big detail

that there've been
a fallout between The Family and a supplier

and one of the supplier's
had actually left town

and two other drug dealers
were found dead,

and Mike had believed
that he might be next.

What she didn't know
was I had recently

come out of
the special investigations

which handles
all drug investigations and organized crime.

You know, I had been
there for six years

and certainly had never heard

of any real
organized crime involvement

in Lexington at all,

much less named "The Family."

Detective Root
still has to follow down every lead at this point,

so, he's chasing this down.

[Cox] He put out
some feelers to informants

and also to other officers.

No one had ever
heard of anyone

dealing in drugs in Lexington
known as the "Shark."

[Root] The first thing
that we asked his dad

and close friends
about was,

"Do you have any information
that Mike was dealing drugs

or involved
in organized crime?"

And they all found that
that was just very outlandish.

When I heard that,
it was ludicrous.

I knew that there was...

There was no truth
to that whatsoever.

We went to his mom's house

because Beth was over there

and just to console her

and to see
if they had heard of anything.

Whole time that we were there,
Beth didn't cry once.

I knew something
wasn't right at that point.

Elizabeth's actions
are raising

a lot of suspicions.

She doesn't appear
to be a grief-stricken wife,

much less a newly-wed
who has been married for just five months.

[Friis] Early the next morning

workers from
the Lakeside Golf Course,

about seven miles
from Elizabeth's and Michael's apartment

see a body floating
in one of their ponds.

The body has a wedding ring,

a pair of boxer shorts

and is in a green bathrobe.

They immediately call police.

I had already seen
several photos of Mike,

and plus remembering
that Elizabeth described

a bathrobe that was missing

and that Mike used regularly.

So, when I see this body,

I know beyond a doubt
that it was Mike Turpin.

The body was found in really
only a few inches of water.

There had been
no effort it seemed

to conceal the body
in any way.

[Root] It certainly
indicated to us

that we were dealing
with amateurs

or people that were just
going too fast

and not thinking
things through.

[Friis] The body goes
immediately for an autopsy

and there were 19 stab wounds.

All of the stab wounds
were to his head, neck and chest,

and essentially
his cause of death

was bleeding out,
exsanguination.

Because so many
of the stab wounds were superficial or shallow,

it was speculated early on
that maybe it was a female

or somebody much shorter

who had actually
inflicted those wounds.

Mike's friends and family
were obviously

overcome with grief.

But they also
had so many questions.

I didn't really have
a whole lot I could tell them at that point,

but one thing we did
find out very quickly,

and that was
a unanimous opinion from the family,

no one liked Elizabeth.

They all felt
it was a bad marriage, bad choice on Mike's part.

[Cox] Police brought
Karen Brown in for questioning

and she pretty much
corroborated Elizabeth's story.

They'd gone out after work,

they'd gone to the bar,
The Circus,

and stayed at
Karen's apartment that night.

She also told them
that Mike was dealing drugs

for a group called The Family,

and that his name
on the street was the Shark.

[Root] She's adding
to Elizabeth's story.

She's verified
some of it,

but then she throws in
little tidbits.

She said that
Mike was physically abusive to Elizabeth,

and that was the first
we had heard of anything like that.

[Kaiser] While Karen's story
corroborates what Elizabeth told police,

it goes against everything
detectives have heard from Mike's family and friends.

Why would both
Elizabeth and Karen lie?

What are they covering up?

[Friis] The day after
Michael Turpin's body was found

police have major concerns

about Elizabeth Turpin
and Karen Brown.

They both have
stories that are very similar

but there's things that aren't
adding up about both of them.

[Cox] Police continue
their investigation,

going back
to the apartment complex

and talked to anyone
who might have heard

or seen something.

And the Turpins'
downstairs neighbor

told them that
on the night before Michael was reported missing,

they heard
a man's voice shouting,

what seemed to be
"You're not going back downtown."

Well, Elizabeth
has never liked

anyone telling her
what to do or not do.

[Lyons] Detectives
talked to the neighbor

that Elizabeth went to
to ask to call 911.

The neighbor said
when she talked to her,

Elizabeth didn't seem
to be upset

like we might be
if we just found

a lot of smeared blood
and our loved one missing.

She was pretty put off
by Elizabeth's reaction.

She was really concerned

by how matter of fact
that she was about

Michael's disappearance.

She wasn't frantic.
She wasn't worried.

[Lyons] The thing
about that is,

why you would go
to another person's apartment to call 911

and a theory you may have
in an investigation

is, "If I make the phone call,

I may not sound right.
I might be disingenuous.

I might not say
the right things."

Those are those
teeny tiny things

that on the face themselves
they don't mean a lot,

but down the road
they could actually build into a larger snowball.

Police also questioned
Mikes' employer who was shocked

that Mike was embezzling money
from her business

because he was
so straight-laced.

She had nothing
but kind things to say about him.

He had never
missed a day's work.

She then told them a story

about Elizabeth coming
to see her the next day

after Mike's body was found,

and asked her to make out
Mike's last paycheck

to her, Elizabeth Turpin,
and she would cash it.

Elizabeth went on
to tell Mike's boss,

"I know I'm the prime suspect,
but I have an alibi."

Mike's boss thought
that was odd.

Police found it
very suspicious, too.

[Kaiser] A lot of people
who are dependent on drugs

don't think clearly,

and it is possible
that Elizabeth doesn't realize

the impression
that she's giving people.

[Friis] Later that day,
police receive a tip,

from an informant that says,

"You need go talk
to a drug dealer named Don."

When police go
and interview Don,

Don says that he saw Karen

twice the night
that Michael went missing.

And he remembers it
really vividly

because Karen was in drag
so it really stuck out to him.

The first time
that she comes to the apartment,

Don just sells her
cocaine and marijuana.

The second time
she comes to the apartment,

she asks for a gun.

And Don says
that he doesn't have a gun

and that if she's worried
about her safety

having to do with
anything with, you know, downtown bar life stuff

that she should
call the police

and have a cruiser
escort her home.

But instead she just says,
"No, if you don't have a gun, that's fine. I'm gonna go."

That set off
all kinds of alarms for police.

"Why would Karen Brown
be looking to borrow a gun

on the very night it turns out
Michael Turpin was murdered?"

This case was
all over the news instantly.

Everybody knew
what had happened.

So then, two of
Karen's roommates

went to police and said
they had information

that might shed
even more light on Mike's murder.

[Friis] They say
that the morning after Mike went missing

both Karen and Keith
go down to Karen's car

spending the better part
of the morning

using bleach
to be able to clean out the back seat of Karen's car.

They also say that Keith
had called them from work

and said that he needed them

to dispose of
his tennis shoes,

and they were really
concerned about this

and wondering why
anybody would ask

to have a good pair
of tennis shoes thrown out

and he says,
"Don't worry about it. Throw my shoes away."

Police were already suspicious
of Karen and Elizabeth,

but now there is a new guy
that has entered the scene which is Keith Bouchard,

also mixed up in this entire
partying-nightlife culture,

and certainly a part
of this friend group.

So it was a real break
in the case

and exactly what
they were looking for

just days after Mike's murder.

A lead like this is gigantic.

This is a shifter.

This is where
the trajectory changes,

and the momentum changes
and sometimes we would say

that in a case like this,
the lead has legs.

Police immediately bring
Keith Bouchard and Karen Brown

into the station
and question them separately.

Keith really doesn't say much.

[Lyons] Karen's
a little bit different.

It's one of those things
where it's deny, deny, deny

until they start to push her.

Karen finally admits
to cleaning the car.

But her statement is that
she had spilled grape juice

in the back seat
and that's why they were cleaning the car.

[Friis] When they
asked her about the fact that she had wanted a gun,

she says that
her dad is abusive,

that they have always
had a tumultuous past,

and so she was getting a gun

as just protection
against that.

So, every time police
have something damning or concerning to bring to her,

she has a reason
for everything.

Detectives are convinced
that she's lying,

and so they tell her
"We're gonna be taking your car in.

If there's any
blood on your car

we're gonna
be able to find it."

And it's at that point
where Karen really comes clean

and says, "Keith did it,

but I was actually there
when it happened as well."

Karen then tells police,
Elizabeth had said that Mike was very abusive.

That he was verbally abusive,

that he was
physically abusive,

and that Elizabeth
really wanted him out of the way.

If he was out of the way
then they could take advantage

of the life insurance policy
that Mike Turpin had.

Michael has $60,000
worth of life insurance

and it's all
going to Elizabeth.

So, she uses that.
She talks about that money

both to Keith and to Karen,

and she talked about
what she and Karen could do with that money.

In turn, Karen promised
a portion of that to Keith,

if he would help them
get rid of Mike.

[Friis] Karen says
the night of the murder they go home to her apartment.

Keith looks in Karen's drawer
for some appropriate knives.

He also sees that
Karen has some

black leather
weight-lifting gloves

and so he grabs those

and then he takes the knives
and sticks two of them

through the hole
of what would be the hole of these fingerless gloves

so that way
he's creating knives

that would stick out
from his fists.

Karen and Keith
leave Elizabeth at Karen's apartment

and they set off
towards Mike's apartment.

They go up together
to the apartment door.

- [knocking at door]
- They knock on the door,

and they tell Mike
through the door,

"Hey, we're worried
about Elizabeth.

We were partying with her,

but she's
nowhere to be found."

And so Mike opens up the door,

in nothing but his boxers
and a bathrobe

because of course
it was the middle of the night and he had been woken up.

At that point Keith
jumped into action.

He jumps
on top of Mike Turpin,

stabs him multiple times.

Once he's gone into shock

and he's not
fighting anymore,

Keith says we need
to put him in water

because water
erases fingerprints.

So, Karen helps Keith
load the body,

into the back of Karen's car

and takes him out
to the Lakeside Golf Course pond.

People under
the influence of substances

can have impacted reality,

impacted perceptions,

decision-making
can be impaired,

all of these
could've contributed

to the crime
that was committed.

[Cox] Karen was admitting
wrong-doing,

but yet trying
to pin it all on Keith,

and keep blame away
from her and Elizabeth.

Karen's statement was enough

to put both Keith
and Karen under arrest,

and as police were taking
Keith to the jail,

he blurted out, "I guess
you're gonna want to go to my grandma's house

and get those knives."

There's a lot of
evidence that's recovered at Karen's apartment.

For one,
they find a lot of blood

in the back seat
of Karen's car,

and they quickly find out
that is blood type A,

the same blood type
as Mike Turpin.

So police think
they have the two killers.

Karen admitted helping Keith
get rid of the body.

But police felt
there was something more

and they were still
very suspicious of Elizabeth,

feeling she had to be involved
in some way.

[Friis] On Saturday,
February 8th, 1986,

five days after
Mike Turpin's murder,

and a little over five months
after they had been married,

Elizabeth Turpin is arrested.

She initially refuses
to talk to police,

but she's charged
along with Karen and Keith

with intent to murder
for profit,

which at the time in Kentucky
was a capital offense,

meaning she can
get the death penalty.

They fully believe
Elizabeth planned the murder

but they just
didn't have enough to pin it on her.

They had to make a deal
with somebody.

[Friis] Prosecutors approach
Karen's counsel

and Karen's counsel says,
"We will consider

her testifying
against Elizabeth

as long as you recommend

that she only gets
three years in jail,"

and the prosecution says,
"Well, you can kiss my ass on that."

Prosecutors normally
don't like to offer a plea deal to the person

who actually, physically
committed murder.

Juries hate that.

But at the same time,
they fully believe

this murder would not
have happened

without Elizabeth Turpin.

So, then they went
to Keith Bouchard's attorney

and they hammered out
an agreement.

[Friis] He agrees to testify

against both
Karen and Elizabeth

as long as the court
will recommend

life with the possibility
of parole.

[Root] At that time
a life-sentence only carried

eight years before
you were eligible for parole,

but it is what we had to do

to get the main force.

[Cox] So, Keith Bouchard
tells his story.

He says that the whole thing
was Elizabeth's idea.

She wanted Michael dead.

[Root] Elizabeth
told Keith and Karen about a life insurance policy

that Mike had
taken out on himself,

and that they could
take that money

and move some place
and live the good life.

Keith, Karen and Elizabeth

were partying that night
at a bar called The Circus.

There was a drag show
and Karen did

her impersonation
of Corey Hart.

[Friis] Karen gets up
to perform

and dedicates the song,
"Everything in My Heart"

to Elizabeth.

After the song was over...

Elizabeth comes up on stage
and joins Karen,

and gives her a very long
passionate deep kiss,

that left no doubt to anybody

what the status was
between Elizabeth and Karen.

It was pretty clear
that at that point they had not been lovers.

But this was sort of that
final statement to Karen

that they could be together
if it wasn't for Mike.

As the night went on,
Elizabeth told them

that she was afraid
for her life.

She did not want
to go home that night.

[Kaiser] This is
the final lie.

Not only does she love Karen

but she needs
Karen's protection from her abusive husband,

and Karen falls for it.

[Cox] Elizabeth is doing
what she's done all her life.

She is pushing every button

in order to manipulate
Karen and Keith into doing what she wanted that night.

Keith says he and Karen
go to Mike's apartment.

Keith rushed Michael,

and began stabbing him.

But he also says Karen Brown
wasn't the uninvolved witness

that she had claimed to be.

Keith was a fairly small guy,
only about 5'1", 5'2",

and Michael's
almost a whole foot taller than him, he's larger.

It's unlikely Keith could've
overpowered him alone.

Karen helps hold him down,
one hand on his shoulder

and one hand over his mouth

to stop him from yelling
and hollering,

so that the neighbors
won't be woken.

We knew that Karen's interview
and confession had problems

and it could
well be suppressed by the judge in this case,

so we had to make a deal.

Everything we got
put together says that

Elizabeth manipulated
Keith and Karen

into doing
her dirty work for her.

She is the main force
behind this murder.

[Cox] September 9th, 1986.

Elizabeth Turpin
and Karen Brown go on trial for murder.

On trial for their lives.

The crime was so heinous,

so senseless,

and the salacious
details around it,

lesbian love,

killing the abuser
of one's lover,

it had all the elements
that piqued public interest.

Karen and Elizabeth
have separate defenses.

They have separate lawyers.

They could potentially
have separate sentences,

but they're
in the same court room at the exact same time,

so they're being
tried together.

[Root] There was
a lot of note-passing back and forth,

and of course they do read
all correspondence.

They're very steamy.

It's love letters
between the two of them,

and Elizabeth is very,
very, lovey-dovey in them.

Claiming things about
whenever they get off

how they're gonna
move out to California.

All the dirty things
that she wants to do to her

if they would
ever be left alone.

Elizabeth was still working on
keeping Karen on her side

and not talking
or testifying against her.

[Cox] They were
agreeing to basically stick to the plan.

"You won't testify against me,
I won't testify against you,

"so it's our word
against Keith's."

But Elizabeth
definitely testifies,

and by all accounts
she is really good on the stand.

[Cox] Elizabeth
could always talk herself out of things

so she was ready
to get on the stand

and tell her version
of the story.

And in that
it was all Karen's fault.

Karen fell in love with her,

but Elizabeth did not return
those feelings at all,

that she knew
nothing of the murder.

She did not ask Keith
to help protect her.

That the whole thing
was Karen's plot

because she was in love
with Elizabeth.

The prosecutor once told me

that was Karen's ah-ha moment

when she realized
she had sacrificed herself

for someone who cared
nothing about her.

[Friis] The jury
does not believe

Elizabeth Turpin's
account of events

and convicts both her
and Karen Brown of murder.

[Cox] The jury chose
not to sentence them to death,

and in Kentucky at that time
the next harshest punishment

was life with parole
after 25 years.

[Fleischer] When the
final verdict came out

and everybody got convicted,
I was very happy.

I cried.

I wanted Mike
to be vindicated.

[Cox] Keith,
Karen, and Elizabeth,

all three of them
have had several hearings over the years.

[Cox] But they have
exhausted every avenue

and all three
will now stay behind bars for the rest of their lives.

Elizabeth really
used her charming and alluring personality

to seduce Mike Turpin
very early on.

[Fleischer] She saw him
as a meal ticket,

and obviously
was going to be successful,

and that's why
she grabbed him up from the start.

She kinda wrung
Mike around like a rag.

As soon as she got everything
she could bleed out of him,

including his dignity
and integrity,

she was ready to move on

and maybe
find the next victim.

[Cox] She could
have walked away and just gotten a divorce,

but there was still
something left she wanted,

that $60,000
of life insurance.

[Friis] Elizabeth used
her powers to seduce Karen

to start getting things
that she wanted,

and it really was that kiss

on the night
of Mike Turpin's murder

that really
sealed the deal for Karen.

It made everything public.
It made everything official

and Karen really knew
at that moment

that they could be
together forever.

Elizabeth was so skilled

in her ability
to manipulate people

that even Keith
who's not attracted to her

was seduced
into committing murder

with a combination of lies
and the promise of money.

She figured out a pain point
and a way to get to Keith

by claiming that
she was in some way abused.

Police and prosecutors found
no evidence whatsoever

that Michael had ever been
abusive to Elizabeth

either physically
or psychologically.

Elizabeth wrote in a diary
very early in her life

that she knew she could
manipulate people.

She knew that she could
reach them in a way

that would turn
their attentions

solely to her,

and they would end up doing
whatever she asked.

Probably the most
disturbing part of that diary entry

is she wrote that
she didn't even feel guilty

about her ability
to use people.

He was killed
because she was selfish.

She just wanted
the world for herself,

and she didn't care

who she hurt
or killed to get it.
