[Tony] Lisa and Kosta were
a very prominent couple.

And then Diedre Hunt comes in
off the street

and says
she's looking for a job.

[man 2] She was bright.

She was very sexual.

[man 3] Kosta said,
"Can I have her?"

That's when things changed
for the city of Daytona beach.

[woman speaking]

[man 3] Diedre Hunt
and Kosta Fotopoulos were both manipulating each other

to get what they desired.

When she looked at me
with those big eyes,

you could tell that
she was a seductress.

[man 2] In the middle of
one investigation,

another murder comes up.

[man 3] That's when
all hell breaks loose.

[Michael] Daytona Beach
has always been depicted

as the world's
most affordable beach.

It was a wonderful place
to take your family.

[Stacy]
But in the late 1980s, there was another side

of the beach in Daytona.

A darker world of
transient kids

and a man who manipulated them
into doing his bidding.

Until one of them
seduced him instead.

[David] There were several
smaller clicks of communities

within Daytona Beach,
one of which was the Greek community.

And it was a very
tight knit community of very hard workers.

And the Greek community
had established themselves

pretty much throughout
the beachside as merchants,

uh, with shops, t-shirts,
things of that nature.

[Purvette] Lisa
and Kosta Fotopoulos were well known in Daytona Beach

as a friendly family who
cared about their community.

Lisa and Kosta were
a very prominent couple back in the '80s.

You didn't go the boardwalk
without knowing who they were.

[Michael]
Kosta was born and raised in Greece and came here

for his university education.

[Purvette] Lisa comes from
the Paspalakis family

which was well known
at the Daytona Beach area.

Her father came here
from the old country

and he amassed quite a bit
of real estate holdings and businesses.

[David] Her family had built
several successful businesses

on the boardwalk.

So they had money.

[Michael] Lisa graduated
from the university with a degree in accounting.

And ultimately,
she was a part of the day to day operations

of the various businesses that
the Paspalakis family had.

Lisa's family was
looking for a husband for her.

And as was the case
in the Greek tradition,

they wanted to try to stay
within the Greek community

and find a suitable husband
for her.

[Michael] When her
and Kosta got married,

it was like the jewel
of Daytona to see

a young Greek couple that are
very thoroughly educated,

but also had influence
in the community.

[Tony]
Kosta had a good personality.

You couldn't help
but like the guy when you first met him.

He liked being
in the limelight

because he wanted
the attention.

He wanted to know that
people would recognize him.

[Michael]
When Lisa's father passed away in November of '88,

it was a shock
to the Greek community.

Being a Greek family,
you support family.

So at that time,
Kosta and Lisa moved in

with mom
and little brother Dino

to help take care
of the mother.

And that allowed
Kosta and Lisa

to control the house
and the house affairs.

Being close friends
of the family,

I had the opportunity to
interact with Kosta and Lisa.

It was obvious to everyone
that there was a facade of happiness,

but you wouldn't see
a public display of affection.

I think it was a marriage
of convenience,

a forced marriage
from tradition.

[David] He had
these grandiose ideas

that would lead to him
having power and money

and Lisa and her family
were simply a stepping stone

for him to get that.

[Tony] He wasn't shy about
looking at somebody and going,

I should have what they have.

I had a bar and a shop
in Daytona.

And Kosta came in
and he said,

you know, I have
a friend who owns

a place on the boardwalk
that's for lease.

I would like to open it up
as a bar and a pool hall.

You wanna invest
in that for me?

You know, you can be
a part owner.

And that's how we got
Top Shots.

It was the only bar bar
on the boardwalk

and it was
an immediate success.

[Joe] During the evening hours
the boardwalk totally changed.

Where the families disappeared
for the most part.

And all the vagrants
and runaways would

be attracted to the boardwalk.

[Michael] The Top Shots
became a hub for a lot of the transients.

The young ones who were,
kind of, living aimlessly

in their lives were
attracted to Kosta

and I believe he was
able to influence 'em.

[David] To these kids,
Kosta was a big businessman

living in a big house,
driving a BMW.

I mean, for heaven's sakes,
you know, they had nothing

and he had everything.

He was bigger than life.

[Tony] Kosta would tell these
young vagrants that he was

a commando and he was
a paid assassin,

and he was a ninja,
and all this kind of crap

that, you know, an adult
wouldn't believe or even listen to.

And they fell for it.

[Stacy]
It seems Kosta has become something of a pied piper

to these down and out kids.

But what is he
getting out of the deal?

[David] In mid-1989,

Diedre Hunt comes down
from a small town

in New Hampshire
to Daytona Beach.

She was penniless,

really knew no one,
20 years of age,

and out of work, out of luck.

[Tony] Diedre Hunt
comes in off the street.

Very, very pretty girl.

Great personality,
and says she was looking for a job.

And I said, "Really?
What can you do?"

She said,
"I can do anything you want."

I said, well, I really would
like to have my customers waited on.

And she said, "I can do that."

So I hired her.

And our business
picked up 50%.

Because she was a hustler.

[David] Deidre had,
to put it lightly, a very effervescent personality.

She was bright,
she was sultry,

she was attractive.

And she had no problem
showing a lot of skin

wearing small bathing suits
or bikinis

while she was working
at the bar.

[Joe] She was hit on
quite a bit at the bar

and Kosta, obviously,
liked her looks.

[Tony] Deidre didn't have
a place to stay.

So I put her up
in the hotel down the street.

Kosta said, "I think
she's the one for me.

Can I have her?"

What?

I said, "I don't care.
You wanna pay for her hotel?"

He said,
"I'll take care of everything. I'll take care of everything."

They were together a lot.

You know, you were seeing
them going here and there

and all the places that
Lisa never wanted to go.

He had Deidre
right by his side.

[Michael]
I think Lisa detected early on

that there was a distraction
on his part.

I think she probably
made her point very clear with Kosta

by saying, listen,
if you cheat on me,

you're done,
and you're not gonna be entitled to anything.

I'm carving you out.
I'm gonna divorce you and you get nothing.

That's when things
changed dramatically

for the city of Daytona Beach
in the Paspalakis family.

[phone dialing]

[911 operator speaking]

[David]
In the early morning hours of November the fourth,

the Daytona Beach
police department

receive a frantic call
from a home.

[man speaking]

[911 operator speaking]

[man speaking]

[David] The caller
heard gunshots at his home.

But he's not sure
where they've come from.

While that call
is heard by the police and the dispatch,

you can hear
wailing and screaming in the background.

[woman speaking]

[man speaking]

[911 operator speaking]

[man speaking]

[911 operator speaking]

[man speaking]

[911 operator speaking]

[David] The caller's sister
had been shot.

He's begging the police to
arrive as quickly as they can.

The police do arrive quickly,
and they can still hear

the screaming and wailing
of a female voice

coming from within the home.

[woman speaking]

[David] Eventually,
a young man opens the door.

He's identified as
Dino Paspalakis.

Dino is the brother of Lisa.

[Purvette] Dino told police
that his sister Lisa

had been shot.

When he heard the gunshot,

Kosta asked him
to call 911.

[David] They immediately
run up the stairs

to find Kosta Fotopoulos
cradling his wife Lisa,

who is bleeding profusely
from a head wound.

Kosta tells them that
he'd been asleep

with his wife
in the bedroom.

And was awakened
when a shot rang out.

He immediately saw
the intruder

next to his wife
standing over her.

Grabbed his gun
from under the bed,

shot him five or six times.

And then got up from the bed

and went up to him,
shot him once more in the head.

They see a young man
lying face down on the floor

in a puddle of blood,
with a gun at his feet.

Lisa is rushed to the hospital
with a bullet wound to her brain.

[Michael] We were, of course,
all concerned about

Lisa's welfare
and if she was gonna make it.

Kosta's telling me,
"I'm not gonna get arrested for this.

You know, he shot my wife
and I was just

defending my wife
in my house.

I'm not gonna
get arrested for this.

Make sure I don't
get arrested for this.

And I said, "Kosta,
if you were defending your house and your wife,

shooting this burglar
is not going to be

something that they're gonna
charge you with.

In fact, you know,
you're a hero."

[David]
Investigators surmised it to be an armed robbery

as gone wrong.

And Kosta is touted
as a hero

who has saved his wife
from certain death

at the hands of this
homicidal maniac.

[Michael] We were so fortunate
to hear that Lisa survived.

Not too many people
survive a gunshot wound to the head.

But it just wasn't
her time to die.

[David] The assailant was
identified as Bryan Chase

who was 18 years of age.

Effectively, a transient
living in Daytona Beach.

[Tony] Bryan Chase,
he used to hang around Top Shots

because we would pay him
to take out the trash,

sweep, do stuff like that.

He didn't really
work for us, per se.

But we would help him out.

So Bryan Chase is one of
Kosta's followers.

It's possible that
the kids he's been helping

have him pegged as
a wealthy target.

[David]
There's been an attempt on Lisa Paspalakis' life

by someone associated
with Kosta's bar.

From that, the police will
start their investigation.

The lower portion of the house
there's sliding glass doors

across the entire
back of the house.

They see that a portion
of the door has been broken.

They see shards of glass
on the ground.

And they immediately
jump to the conclusion

this must be where
this young boy came in.

[Joe] It was kinda strange

because the panes
were very small.

And to me, that was
highly unlikely that

you could get through
those panes.

And also, the glass debris
was on the outside.

Typically, if you're breaking
glass, it's gonna go on the inside

of the area that you're
trying to enter.

And also, the suspect
would actually enter the house

and go up the stairs
and bypass a lot of valuable items.

I thought
that was really strange.

[Michael]
For a burglar to go upstairs, and in the farthest bedroom,

shoot the most
non-threatening person

who was on the opposite side
of the bed,

it just didn't make sense.

You would figure the burglar
would've shot the male first

who was closest to the door.

So a lot of things
did not add up.

And then around
November seventh,

the law enforcement
gets an anonymous phone call

and the investigation takes
a little bit of a twist.

[man speaking]

[911 officer speaking]

[man speaking]

[Stacy]
So Deidre Hunt played a role in this crime?

Police need to start
looking into this protege of Kosta's.

[Purvette] Deidre Hunt grew up
in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Her mother, unfortunately,
was bi-polar,

uh, was abusive.

Deidre was molested
at age seven

and raped at age eleven.

So she experienced
a very traumatic childhood

that she carried with her
wherever she went.

[Stacy]
It's not unusual that a child with a history of abuse

can become a target
of a predator.

Sadly, anyone whose
early life includes this much trauma

is bound to have
serious emotional scars

that they carry
into adulthood.

[David] It was a tough life,
but she was a tough gal.

And eventually,
she finds her way for Manchester, New Hampshire

to the warmer climate
of Daytona Beach.

[Purvette] When Deidre
came to Daytona Beach,

she was really looking for
a fresh start, a clean slate

where she would be
in a different environment,

meet new people.

And um, ended up
at Top Shots where

she met Kosta Fotopoulos.

[Michael] When law enforcement
hears of Kosta's affair with Deidre Hunt,

they immediately go ahead
and pick her up.

[David]
Deidre Hunt wanted to talk.

But she also wanted promises.

I told her,
"I understand you wanna talk to me.

What is it
you wanna talk about?"

She looked up at me and says,
"I don't know what to do.

If I talk to you,
Kosta will hurt me."

When she looked up at me
with those big eyes,

you could almost
feel her, literally trying to draw me in.

You could tell that
she was a seductress.

I said, the only thing
I can promise you

is I'll listen to
what you have to say.

Like a burst dam,
she starts to tell the story.

Yeah, during the interview,
Deidre was very

specific on the relationship
she had with Kosta.

She knew that he was married
to Lisa and at that didn't seem to bother her one bit.

They had plans together

and the plan was to kill Lisa

so that they could get married
in the future.

That moment really explodes
the investigation

in a different direction.

Changing Kosta Fotopoulos
from a hero

to the chief suspect
in the attempted murder of his wife.

That's when all hell
breaks loose.

Deidre starts to tell us
about the plot to kill Lisa.

[Michael] Deidre Hunt told
law enforcement that

she recruited Bryan Chase
and she basically told him,

you'll get $5,000.

Here's a .22 caliber revolver.

What I want you to do is
I want you to

fake a home invasion
and I need you to kill Lisa

and needs to be done
right away.

This inexperienced
young, naive man

had several attempts
that failed.

I think one time
he tried to throw a brick through the window

and couldn't break the window.

Then a second time,
the activated motion detector light came on

and he got spooked.

The third attempt was
actually the time when they staged the break in.

[Purvette]
When Bryan shot Lisa,

Kosta shot him five times,
killing him.

Bryan couldn't collect
the $5,000

and he couldn't go to police.

[Stacy]
This is a manipulative and twisted plan for sure.

But notice Deidre's
dead pan delivery.

Does she not realize
just how evil it is?

[David] As she was
telling us all this,

out of the blue, she says,
"Oh, by the way,

we killed this boy
in the woods a couple of weeks ago."

And at that moment, honestly,
I almost fell back in my chair

because I don't know
what I was expecting,

but I wasn't expecting this.

And she starts to tell me
about the death of Mark Kevin Ramsey.

[Deidre speaking]

[Purvette] Kevin Ramsey
was a 19 year old from North Carolina.

He was a drifter
on the boardwalk,

but was well known.

And he worked for
Kosta Fotopoulos at Top Shots.

[Michael] Deidre Hunt solicits
Mark Kevin Ramsey,

says, listen,
we're all members of this club

and in order for you
to be a member,

we have an initiation process.

We're gonna take you
out in the woods,

you know,
we're just gonna pretend.

We're gonna tie you up.
We'll shoot at your feet

and if you can tolerate that,
then you're in.

And of course,
with her attractiveness

and her sexuality,
she convinced him to go out there.

So he voluntarily agreed
to be tied to the tree

knowing that they were
just gonna shoot at his feet.

[Stacy] Was Deidre truly
afraid of Kosta,

even though he claimed
to love her?

Did she think he would
really shoot her

if she made him angry?

Given what she knew
he was capable of,

maybe she had reason
to believe it.

[Michael]
Everyone's jaw just dropped.

In the middle of
one investigation,

now all of a sudden,
another murder comes up.

[Joe] And so,
at that point, we're like,

kind of flabbergasted that
she said that,

but she said it
in just a nonchalant manner.

She outlined exactly
what happened

out in the woods

and she agreed to take us
to that homicide scene.

[David] When the police
get there with her,

they immediately smell
the odor of a decaying body in the woods.

They go out into the woods

And as they search,
they find the decomposed body

of what appears to be
a young man.

[Joe] The body was
tied to a palm tree

that was on a little bit
of an angle.

And he was slumped over,
leaning forward.

Uh, he had been shot
three times in the chest.

And he had a large wound
to his head.

[David] The remains
are ultimately identified through dental records

as that of Mark Kevin Ramsey.

I went to Deidre,
to tell her that she was being arrested for murder.

I can remember
her sitting there

as I was standing
in front of her

and she looked up at me
and one of those,

kind of, doe eyed
kind of looks that she could give.

And it was almost as,
why are you arresting me?

How can she not know

that she has murdered?

And that she's gonna be
held accountable for?

[Stacy] Given everything
Deidre Hunt went through as a child,

it is entirely possible
she struggles with the idea of right and wrong.

This is clearly
a damaged young woman.

[David] Ultimately,
Kosta Fotopoulos was

brought to the Daytona Beach
police department

and he agreed to
speak with the detectives.

[David] Kosta simply
denied everything.

He denied knowing people,
he denied being involved with Deidre.

He denied, of course,
being involved with

any attempt or conspiracy
to murder his wife.

The arrogance
and the way in the manner he answered questions...

Uh, he thought he was
the smartest guy in the room.

[David] During the interview,
one of the detectives

took out a photograph
of Mark Ramsey when he was alive

and asked Kosta if
he recognized Mark Ramsey.

[detective speaking]

[Kosta speaking]

[David] Regardless of
Kosta's claim of innocence,

there was
more than enough evidence

at that point to arrest him.

During the course
of the investigation,

we got a lot of information
that there was some issues in the marriage.

[Purvette] On October 25th,
Lisa received a call

from a friend,
telling her that

Kosta was having an affair
with Deidre Hunt.

[Tony] Well, I told my wife.

And my wife is the one
that told Lisa.

She confronted Kosta
for a divorce

and Kosta knew
he would lose everything.

I think that's
what he put into motion.

"Well, I can solve that.
I'll just kill her."

[Stacy] This explains
the urgency Kosta showed

in getting the assassination
of Lisa planned

and executed.

He didn't wanna lose
the power base he had built

out of her family's
boardwalk empire.

[David]
We received information from Lisa

that was really strange.

She revealed that
there had been

some suspicious
activity by Kosta

and the activity had
surrounded a back yard barbecue pit

that was on the side
of their house

and she had seen him
in the dead of the night

roaming around that
back yard pit.

It became apparent
that the search

of the Paspalakis home
was gonna be necessary.

My chief investigator
sees protruding

out of this mound
a black bag.

Inside,
there were two weapons.

One was an AK-47
that Deidre Hunt had described

Kosta Fotopoulos
carrying with him.

And the other was
a small caliber .22 handgun

with a silencer attached.

All of which is
100% consistent

with the story that
Deidre Hunt is telling us.

But she's also
told us something

that we never suspected.

And that's
that Kosta Fotopoulos

had videotaped
the entire murder.

Where is that tape?
Does it really exist? Can we find it?

[Stacy] Why would Kosta
have made such a tape?

And if he did, why would he
be reckless enough to keep it?

[Joe] Then we had
searched the garage

and one of the investigators
noted a bag.

Inside it was
a Sony 8mm tape.

[David] We had a cassette
and went back to the state attorney's office.

And everybody was
waiting to see the video.

And Joe put the tape in.

The room was dead silent

and the tape began to play.

And within seconds,
you can hear Deidre

at that moment.

There was another person
that was video recording it.

We didn't see his face,
but we heard him.

Then the image came on
of who we knew to be

Mark Kevin Ramsey
tied to a tree

with his hands
behind his back.

[Michael] It's not a movie.

It's not a recreation.

It's actually Deidre Hunt
shooting Mark Kevin Ramsey.

[David] Deidre pulls out
a gun with a silencer

and she then fires three shots
into his chest.

He immediately screams out
in pain and agony.

She then, with her left hand,
takes hold of his

right part of his head
with his long hair,

pulls it down
and puts the gun

up to his right temple
and shoots again, blowing out his brains.

The tape stops.

The room was silent.

We didn't know what to say.
Didn't know what to think.

Never had me
or any of them

to my knowledge had ever
seen something like this.

[Joe] I've seen
a lot of horrific acts

and victims of crimes.

But the video recording
of Kevin Ramsey,

that was quite disturbing.

It's a nightmare.

It'll always be a nightmare.

At that moment,
I knew that

my work from that point on

was to get them convicted
and sentence them to death.

Deidre Hunt entered a plea
to all of the homicides.

Mark Kevin Ramsey,
Bryan Chase,

the attempted murder
of Lisa Fotopoulos.

She pled guilty to the charges

in an effort to
avoid the death penalty.

But ultimately,
the court sentenced her

to death by electric chair.

With Kosta Fotopoulos,
there was a plea of not guilty.

"I didn't do anything.
I'm not involved.

I'm the innocent victim."

So on October 8th, 1990,

Kosta Fotopoulos'
trial begins.

[Michael] Lisa had
an opportunity to testify

and that testimony
that she provided to the jury

was very damning 'cause
it really set the theme

of why these murders occurred.

Her discovery of infidelity,
the affairs with Deidre

and her calling him out,
basically saying, okay,

you're out,
you're not gonna get anything

and you need to
pack up your bags and leave.

[Michael] That was the reason
for his urgency

in trying to
eliminate witnesses,

destroy evidence,
or ultimately

cause the death of Lisa
in an effort to

gain her life insurance
and potentially be an heir apparent

to the Paspalakis empire.

Deidre Hunt
was called to the stand.

And here you have
a young girl,

very attractive,
and the jury was

just enthralled
with her testimony.

She presented
very compelling testimony

all against Kosta Fotopoulos.

How he was the mastermind
or the conductor of this murder orchestra.

She described her relationship
with Kosta

where he was very controlling,

a manipulating person.

[Tony] A lot of people just
thought that Deidre was brainwashed by Kosta

and that he was
mentally cruel to her,

physically cruel to her.

He did all these horrible,
horrible things to her.

And that's why
she did what she did because,

out of fear for her life.

[Michael]
Deidre Hunt portrayed herself

as the wounded victim
and that she was,

you know, threatened by him,
physically and mentally abused by him.

There was clearly manipulation
on both sides here.

But Kosta was desperate
to have Lisa killed.

And it seems he believed
he had reason to kill the others as well.

[Joe] During the trial,
there was some evidence

with regards to
a counterfeiting scheme.

Mark Kevin Ramsey was
not only working at Top Shots,

he had seen Kosta Fotopoulos
using counterfeit money.

He had gone to Kosta
in an attempt to blackmail.

[Michael] So Kosta says,
oh, let me kill two birds with one stone.

Let me eliminate
Mark Kevin Ramsey,

but at the same time,
let me let Deidre Hunt do it,

so that way I can
use that as blackmail

or influence over her to do
anything I tell her to do.

[Purvette] About 3:00 am,
October 20th, 1989,

Kosta drove Deidre and Kevin

out to a remote,
wooded area on I-95.

[Joe]
Based on his instructions, she shot Kevin Ramsey

three times in the chest
and then once in the head.

Kosta was video recording her
and giving her instructions

and she alleged that
he held an AK-47 on her,

making sure
she went through with it.

That videotape was
a videotape to guarantee her silence

because it would show
her murdering someone

without having Kosta
in front of the camera.

[Stacy]
It's like Kosta is playing a one sided chess match

manipulating
all of the players.

Deidre claimed that
she was left no choice,

but to carry out
the death of Mark Kevin Ramsey

and to participate
in soliciting other people to kill Lisa.

[Michael]
She recruited Bryan Chase to fake a home invasion

and then kill Lisa.

He was assisted by
Kosta Fotopoulos

to ultimately walk up
into that upstairs bedroom,

open the door,
walk around this king sized bed,

aim at Lisa

and pull the trigger
and shoot her in the head.

And then the gun jams.

Fotopoulos being
the deviant diabolical person

that he was, was smart.

I don't have to pay him
five grand 'cause

I'm just gonna
shoot him dead right there.

Kosta Fotopoulos
took the stand on his own defense.

He denied everything.

According to Kosta,
none of the physical evidence was real.

It was all planted.

He didn't do anything wrong.

And in fact,
he was well within his rights

to shoot Bryan Chase
who had come in to murder his wife.

Um, and that he had
no remorse whatsoever

having done that.

In fact, he even said,
if you came into my house

like that,
I would shoot you too.

[Joe] The biggest evidence
we had was the video recording

of the homicide in the woods

where Kevin Ramsey
was murdered.

And we needed to prove that

that was Kosta
Fotopoulos's voice

giving the instruction
to Deidre Hunt.

So I took that tape
to six people

in the community

where they identified
Kosta as the person on the tape.

I'd know his voice
from anywhere.

So I picked him out
out of eight or ten,

and which it was
the correct one.

[Stacy] It was always a gamble
for Kosta to keep that tape.

And it turns out
he was gambling with his life.

On October 25th, 1990,
the jury returned verdicts on all counts.

Kosta was found guilty
of two counts of premeditated murder.

The attempted
first degree murder of Lisa Fotopoulos

and conspiracy to commit
first degree murder.

The court sentenced him
to the electric chair.

In 1995,
Deidre Hunt sentence

is thrown out on appeal.

A retrial
finds her guilty again,

but her sentence is reduced
to life without parole.

Deidre Hunt hopefully will
spend the rest of her life in prison and die there.

Kosta Fotopoulos, God willing,
will die by death penalty

before I pass away.

So that's my wish
and my hope

that I get to see
that sentence carried out.

[Michael]
Lisa is happily remarried.

She has moved on.

She's very happy
to be alive

and she's enjoying her life
with her spouse

and I'm very happy for her.

So there is a happy ending.

[Purvette] The bullet is still
lodged in her head.

And it's a constant reminder

of the tragedy
she experienced.

She has it everyday
in her mind.

Everyday.

Deidre came out
smelling like a rose.

In my opinion,
'cause you know

she's running her cell block.
I guarantee you.

She led everybody around
by their nose.

That's why I say,

Kosta didn't dominate her.

They dominated each other.

[Joe] I think Deidre
is an opportunist

and she saw money

with Kosta.

And Kosta was a very
manipulating type of person

and understood
how to control her.

I think he planned out
his moves very thoroughly.

[David] Deidre Hunt
and Kosta Fotopoulos

were both manipulating
each other

to get what they desired.

They wanted money.
They wanted power.
