She was clearly hysterical.

She was coming into her own

as this new young mom

who was very fit.

She had a lot
of men under her spell.

[Mark McAdams]
My first reaction was

she killed him.
She killed him.

[Calvin Grogan]
There's no doubt

that he is
infatuated with her.

[Michael Burk] She would
sext him text messages

and videos.

[Claire St. Amant]
At one point he even says

"I'll rock
an orange jumpsuit."

[Grogan] He is thinking
with one body part only.

Royse City is a small town

about 30 miles east of Dallas.

You go to the football game
on Friday night

and you go to church
on Sunday morning

and that's sort
of the social life.

[Stacy Kaiser] This is
the kind of place

where people marry young
and start families.

But those families don't
always stay together.

And sometimes, a new person
comes into your life.

A person who will do anything

to get what she wants.

[St. Amant]
It's about 10:45 p.m.

on September 9th, 2016

and the Hunt County
Sheriff's Department receives

a frantic 911 call

from a woman in distress.

[phone ringing]

[woman sobbing]

[911 operator speaking]

The woman is
obviously frantic.

She's breathing heavily.

[operator speaking]

[woman speaking]

[operator speaking]

Phone call did not last
very long.

Then disconnected.

[operator speaking]

[Burk] Shortly after that,
we got notified

that somebody driving
down the road

saw a female
waving her arms around,

screaming for help
and they called 911

which alerted the Royse City
officers to that location.

[police siren wailing]

[Meek] 2595, which is
a farm to market road.

It's more like a tractor road.
People don't even drive it.

It's meant for farming.

It's not paved or anything.
It's just mud.

[officer speaking]

The officer stops
and talks to her,

and it's determined that
this is actually the person

that just placed the 911 call.

[officer speaking]

[Burk] She had blood on her,

screaming that
her husband had been shot.

They secured her
in their squad car,

and they proceeded

to walk down the county road

to attempt
to locate her husband.

So as they're walking down
County Road 2595,

there is a single truck

that can be seen
on this dirt road.

It was running.

The driver's side door was
open. There was nobody in it.

They proceeded
down past the truck.

They could see
headlights in the distance.

They started walking
towards that

and then they realized
there was a body sitting

in the driver seat
of a white jeep.

As they start making
their approach

closer to the driver,

they realized he was deceased.

They start sending out
information over the radio,

send additional units,

notify the sergeant on duty,

to come and assist.

I asked, "What
do you have? A murder?"

And she said,
"Actually, I think

that we do have a murder."

So when I arrived on scene,

Deputy Hoover met me
up the road

and started giving me
a rundown

of what had transpired.

He advised me

that the female caller
who was hysterical

was secured in Officer Bivin's
patrol vehicle.

So, at that time,
I then went over

and made contact with her.

She was clearly upset
and distraught.

I observed her
to be covered in mud

and had blood on her.

And she was
just hyperventilating.

[Meek speaking]

[medic 1 speaking]

[Meek speaking]

[Meek speaking]

[Kaiser] You can see
how upsetting this is

for Chacey.

Her husband has
been shot and killed.

You can tell by the way

she's talking and reacting

that it's taking
a tremendous toll on her.

And you can't help
but feel for her.

[Meek speaking]

[Meek] Okay.

Her and her husband,
Robert Poynter, were

supposed to be meeting
at the Jack in the Box

to have tacos.

While coming down this road
she's never been on,

she gets her Jeep stuck.

And so she was texting him
and calling him

and tellin' him
that she got stuck,

didn't know where she was at

and she sent him
a map location

of where she was
on that dirt road,

and asked him
to respond to the location

to assist her
gettin' her Jeep unstuck.

She says that
when he got there,

he parked his truck
up at the front of the road,

'cause he didn't want
to drive it down there

and get it stuck.

[Meek speaking]

So, she met him
halfway on the road

and they walked down
to her Jeep on foot.

And once they made it
to the Jeep,

he told her
to stand out of the way

and he got into
the driver's seat of the Jeep.

[Chacey speaking]

[gunshot]

[Meek] She hears
a loud gunshot

and then sees a dark figure
standing in front of the Jeep.

She didn't see a weapon,

didn't know if he was White,
Black or Hispanic,

so she took off running.

She pulls her cell phone out,
starts calling 911,

then whenever
the dispatchers answer the phone,

she says she trips,

falls into a water puddle

and loses her phone.

She picked herself up
and continued running

to the roadway where she was
able to flag down motorists,

contact 911 again.

[Burk] I received a phone call
from Rockwall County dispatch

advising that they'd believed

a homicide had just occurred

and I was being
dispatched out.

I'd been through some training

for homicide investigations

but it was
my first actual case

for a homicide to investigate.

So, my first task was

to kind of canvass
the crime scene.

I see Robert's truck

and you can see a skid mark

or a slide mark

where it looks
like somebody slid into mud

which wouldn't match
what Chacey said.

And as we're looking
at this mud puddle

there's a glimmer,

a spark, you know,
a white light

that shined the back at us,

and realized
it's a cell phone.

Luckily, it was waterproof

and we were able to retrieve
the phone at that time.

When I get close to the Jeep,

I look at the deceased,

start looking
at the surrounding area.

The first thing I notice is
there is brain matter

and blood everywhere.

There was
a circular impact point

on the back right side
of his head.

It was pretty apparent

that the weapon used

in the murder would
be a shotgun.

We searched the vehicle.

Chacey's purse was still
on the front floorboard

Robert's cell phone was
still in the cup holder.

Nothing was taken out
of the vehicle.

So we had no belief

that this was a robbery

or an attempted theft
of any kind.

We start kind of brainstorming
of what may have happened.

The area is
very heavily wooded.

It's in the middle of nowhere.

Some stranger steps out
of the trees,

out here in the middle
of hundreds of acres

and shoots a man point blank
in the head with a shotgun?

It just did not make sense.

Our fears tell us

there's bad guys out there
in the woods

but that just doesn't happen.

And it definitely doesn't
happen in Royse City.

[Kaiser] If this wasn't
a random shooting...

- [gunshot]
- ...what was it?

Why would Chacey make up
a story like this?

And what does that tell police

about the state
of her marriage?

[St. Amant] Robert Poynter was
47 years old,

worked as a fire captain

at the University Park
Fire Department in Dallas.

[McAdams] I first met
Bob Poynter in 1998

when I started
as a firefighter

at the City of
University Park, Texas.

He was big,

quiet, scary,
didn't smile a lot.

My first impression was

he looked like a firefighter.

[Earl Starnes] He looked
intimidating,

but once you get to know him,
he's completely the opposite.

[Grogan] Everybody said
he was a gentle giant,

or a big teddy bear.

He'd do anything for anybody,

he'd give you the shirt
off his back,

was the way
Robert was described.

[St. Amant] Bob had married
his high school sweetheart, Amy.

And they had been together
for about 20 years.

They had two children together

who were almost grown.

It was one
of those early romances

that blossomed
into marriage and a family.

[McAdams] But
just like everybody else

that's been married
for a long time,

people change, things change,
attitudes change.

And that's what
they were going through.

And when that was happenin',

Chacey showed up.

In 2007, Bob Poynter meets
Chacey Mormon

who at that time
was only 20 years old.

and was working
as a nurse's aide.

Robert is working up
at the fire station

and a very attractive,
younger blonde female comes to the station

and that ends up being
Chacey Poynter.

[St. Amant] She would
bring cookies.

She would bring doughnuts.

And she was happy
to chat up the firefighters.

She appeared to have
an attraction to Bob.

Then she sort of
singled him out

and they struck up
a relationship.

And it eventually turned
into an affair.

[Kaiser] Marriages can
grow stale over time.

And it seems
that's what happened

with Robert Poynter
and his wife.

And then he meets
an attractive woman

18 years younger than him

who was showing him
a lot of attention

and he falls for her.

[McAdams] She seemed friendly
and easy to talk to.

She knew exactly what to say,

exactly what to do
to pull the strings.

[Grogan] I think
from Chacey's point of view,

here's an older man

that seems to be
secure in life.

She's wanting bigger
and better things at this point.

And so Robert's
the perfect guy.

He gave her
a lot of attention.

I don't believe Chacey had

a lot of physical
male attraction

when she was younger.

Robert is so infatuated
with Chacey

that he ends the marriage
with his wife,

uh, gets divorced,

and starts

a very heavy relationship
with Chacey.

[St. Amant] Bob
and Amy divorce

and he marries Chacey
in December 2009.

At the time,

Chacey is seven months
pregnant with their child.

[McAdams] I was very surprised

when they decided
to get married.

Because it had been so soon

after his other marriage
had ended.

And... and so...

we had conversations
about that,

like, "Man, you know,
are you sure?"

And he was pretty sure
of himself at the time.

[St. Amant] When Chacey
got pregnant,

like a lot of women,
she ended up,

you know,
with some extra weight

after the baby was born

that she had trouble losing.

[Grogan] She wasn't able
to lose that weight

and that caused her
some ego problems.

[St. Amant] She starts
exercising pretty heavily,

starts dieting,

and she ends up losing
over 100 pounds.

It was a big change.

And she was coming
into her own

as this new young mom

who was very fit.

[Kaiser] Many women
have gone through this.

They gain weight in pregnancy

and that causes issues
of low self-esteem.

When Chacey manages
to lose that weight.

it's clearly empowering
for her.

[Starnes] When she started
losing the weight,

she was posting herself
all over Facebook

with these pictures of her
getting thinner, thinner and thinner.

All the pictures she was
posting on Facebook,

it was never a picture
of her and Bob.

Not once.

Thinking to myself like,

"You would never even know
that she was married to Bob

just by looking
at her Facebook page."

[Grogan] The more weight
she lost,

the more attractive she felt
inside and outside,

the more confident she became,

and the more willing she was

to step outside the boundaries
of the marriage.

[St. Amant] She had started
to meet men everywhere.

She met them
at the grocery store.

She met them on her jogs
around the neighborhood.

And she would begin
to flirt with them,

to text with them,
to start relationships.

And her communication got
to be so frequent on her phone

that her husband Bob started
to wonder,

"Who is she talking to
all the time?

Who is she texting?"

And he started
to get suspicious

that maybe she was
cheating on him.

Bob was deeply suspicious
at this point in the marriage,

seven years in,
about Chacey's fidelity,

or lack of it.

One of Bob's daughters

that was living with him
at the time,

found Chacey's laptop open

and Chacey was
having a conversation

with one of the guys
she was having an affair with.

So she clued Bob into that
when she found it.

Bob, he was angry.

He was upset.

He was hurt. 'Cause he did.
He cared about her.

The marriage is on the rocks

and, you know, in an effort
to try to re-engage his wife,

he suggests that they go
on a vacation to Mexico.

[McAdams] He wanted
to keep the marriage together and he thought,

"Man, this is the perfect way
to do that."

[Kaiser] Bob has already gone
through one divorce

and the last thing he wants

is for it to happen again.

But this time, the shoe is
on the other foot.

He's not the one who's
straying, it's Chacey.

The question is, does she want
to save the marriage,

and at this point,
is that even possible.

Unfortunately, the relocation
to Mexico did not change

the temperature
of their marriage.

Chacey was
constantly on her phone,

she was messaging people,

she was being very secretive.

He called me
the day they got back,

and, you know, I was like,
"Hey, man. How did it go?"

And he told me, "I'm gettin'
ahold of my lawyer.

That's it. I'm done with it."

And so, I said,
"All right, man." You know. "I'm with you."

And he got killed that night.

[Meek speaking over radio]

That night
the ambulance crew ended up

needing to go
take another call,

so I moved Chacey back

over to Officer Bivin's
patrol vehicle

and then I continued
interviewing over there.

And she started tellin' me

about how she
and her husband Robert were

having marital problems.

[Meek] She's
still breathin' heavy.

She's still stutterin'

and not speaking
full sentences.

But when I'd step away
from talking to her,

she'd calm down.

But I'd step over
to talk to her,

she'd start hyperventilating.

And she continued
that behavior

the entire time
I talked to her.

I mean, it just wasn't normal.

Chacey then started tellin' me

how she stayed
at a friend's house out in Quinlan.

And as I continued
talking to her,

she starts getting
deeper into the story.

And I asked her, "Are you
in a relationship

with Michael Garza?"
And she hesitated a little bit

but then
she eventually admitted

that, yes, she was
in a relationship with him.

[Meek speaking]

She admitted to me

that they'd had
sexual intercourse that night

prior to her leaving
to go meet with her husband.

[Kaiser] She's on her way
to meet her husband

to discuss
their marital problems.

But she's just had
sex with another man.

Clearly, there's
a lot more to this story

than she's been letting on,

and the police need
to find out what it is.

- [Meek] Okay? All right.
- [Chacey] Yeah.

[Meek] I stepped away
from speaking to her

and I informed detective Burk

and the other officers
on scene what she'd said.

They actually pulled up

the Facebook
of this Michael Garza

and got a picture of him

and he was holding a shotgun.

[Meek] Mm-hmm.

- [gunshot]
- [Chacey continues]

Detectives are skeptical
of Chacey's story.

The idea that a man would be
hiding in the woods

for no apparent reason
and come out

and shoot her husband
in the head,

it doesn't make
a lot of sense.

So they decide to bring her in
for additional questioning.

[Burk] Have a seat right here
in this gray chair for me.

I just kind of
briefly asked her,

tell me a little bit
about herself, and what was going on.

She began by tellin' me

about her relationship
with her husband

and things were not
going very well

between her and her husband.

[Chacey speaking]

[Burk speaking]

[Chacey speaking]

She claimed that her husband
was abusing her,

that he was
physically abusive.

She is basically portraying
herself as a victim

to Detective Burk
at this time.

[Kaiser] This is
a very different version

of Robert Poynter
than his friends have given.

But it's not unusual for abuse
to stay hidden in the home.

The police have
to now figure out

if there was abuse,

and if so, was it connected
to his murder in some way.

[Burk] Chacey tells me
over and over again

that she doesn't know
who murdered her husband.

Just some unknown figure
who just came out of nowhere

and shot her husband.

I wasn't buying that.
It didn't make sense.

[Burk speaking]

Every time that things would
start getting, I guess,

heavy in the interview,
that's where she would go.

"I didn't kill my husband.
I didn't kill my husband."

[Chacey speaking]

Detective Burk
keeps hitting her

over and over again

and that he's
just not believing her.

It starts to break down
and wear down on Chacey

where she now starts talking

about this guy
that she's been seeing,

that she'd met
on the Internet,

Michael Garza.

[Chacey speaking]

- [Burk speaking]
- [Chacey speaking]

Chacey tells police that
Garza is extremely jealous.

He has threatened violence
in the past.

He does not like the fact

that she is still
in a relationship

with her husband.

[Chacey speaking]

[Burk speaking]

[Chacey speaking]

So, Michael Garza was
both jealous and angry

at Robert Poynter.

Could this have led him
to shoot Bob?

[gunshot]

And if so, did he do it
to protect Chacey,

or so he could
have her for himself?

[Chasey speaking softly]

So, Chacey tells police
that she didn't believe

Michael was going
to actually shoot Bob.

She thought the plan was
just to scare him,

to intimidate him.

[Grogan] All that's
going to happen is

that when they get out there
and Robert shows up,

her new boyfriend,
Michael Garza is gonna

go up to Robert
and threaten him with violence

if he won't stop
the abuse towards Chacey.

[Chacey sobbing and speaking]

She's so upset,
she turns to run away

from the scene of the murder,

gets on her phone
and calls 911.

Michael Garza comes after her

and knocks the phone
out of her hand

and ends the 911 call.

And according to her,
then he just runs out into the woods and runs away.

[Chacey crying]

[Burk speaking]

[Chacey continues crying]

Now that Chacey has
implicated Michael Garza

in the murder of her husband,

police have to find him.

He's a long haul trucker.

So, they immediately worry

that he is going
to hit the road.

He could leave the state,
he could leave the country.

When you're wanted for murder,

there's really no telling
what you might do.

Chacey Poynter,
after her interview,

and after continuing
to implicate herself,

talks herself
into being arrested

for conspiracy
to commit murder.

Police are worried
that Michael Garza might

disappear on them.

He's a trucker,

and if he has heard
that Chacey has turned on him,

then he's a desperate man.

And you never know
what a desperate man might do.

We started gathering warrants,

uh, search warrants,

arrest warrants,
stuff like that,

and proceeded
to go to his house,

which he was
not there at the time,

and conducted a search
at the residence.

We found out that he had
family here in town.

Officers went
to his family's house trying to locate him.

Of course, they claimed
they haven't spoken to him

and hadn't seen him.

There's always a sense
of urgency to find a suspect.

Is he gonna
go kill somebody else?

Is he, you know,
gonna destroy evidence?

We also didn't have
his side of the story.

Chacey may have
had us all fooled.

I was at home
when I got a call

from a battalion chief

and said, "I can only talk
for a minute or two.

I just wanna let you know
that... Bob's dead.

I don't have all the details."

So, I kind of sat there
on the side of the bed

and it didn't really sink in.

My first reaction was,

"She killed him.
She killed him."

The fact that...

he had talked to me
the day before and said,

"I'm gettin' a divorce."

And me just seeing

everything that had
happened up until that point,

you know, there was
no doubt in my mind.

I told Bob, I remember saying,
I said, "Man,

that girl's crazy.

She's crazy."

[St. Amant] Two days
after the murder,

to the surprise
of just about everyone,

Michael Garza turns
himself in.

[Burk] When he refused
to speak to me,

I was
very disappointed. Absolutely.

If he was truly innocent,

any way that we could clear
his name, would've been great.

But he chose not to.

We've now got what we believe
may be the shooter.

We were able
to track his whereabouts

based on
his cell phone number.

And that really matched up

with where
the murder happened,

which was at Royse City area

behind the high-school
on that county road.

On October 7th, 2016,

about a month
after the murder,

we got a big break
in our case.

A quarter mile south-west

from where
the murder scene had occurred,

a farmer found a shotgun
out of his field.

He contacted 911.
Officers were sent on scene.

When they took
the serial number

off this recovered shotgun,

and ran it through
the ATF search,

it came back
with the purchaser

of this shotgun being
a Matthew Garza,

Michael Garza's brother.

What was interesting is

if you were to draw
a vertical line

from where Robert Poynter was
slouched over dead that night

on that county road,

to Michael Garza's
mother's house,

it goes right through
that farmer's field.

We also had the picture
of him off Facebook

holding what appeared to be
the exact same shotgun.

[Grogan] Most of the evidence
seems to indicate

that the person most familiar
with the shotgun would've been

the person
who pulled the trigger.

It would've been
Michael Garza.

It looks like Michael Garza
was indeed the shooter.

But the big question
police haven't been able to answer is,

"What role did Chacey play
in the crime?"

[St. Amant] When police get
into Chacey's phone,

they find a treasure trove
of evidence.

She has texted Michael Garza
hundreds of times.

The messages between Michael
and Chacey show his mindset.

[Grogan] There's no doubt
that he is infatuated

with Chacey Poynter,
just from reading

his text messages

that were recovered
off of Chacey's phone.

"I'm willing to protect you
and never hurt you."

This is on August 9th, 2016.

"You're one that deserves
to be treated like a queen."

A little later, "I reckon
the question would be

what I wouldn't do for you.

The answer is nothing."

At one point, he even says,

"I'll rock
an orange jumpsuit."

Which seems to mean

that he's willing to go
to prison for Chacey.

He is thinking
with one body part only at this point.

He's not thinking
with his brain.

In July 2018, the State
of Texas decides to go

to trial first
on Michael Garza.

At the trial,
he basically tries to say

that it was all Chacey.

What he admits to doing is
providing the shotgun

and letting Chacey decide.

If she wants to do something,
she can do it on her own.

So, according to him,

he let's Chacey meet
her husband

on this dark county road
by herself.

Michael Garza claimed that
after he got out of the Jeep,

he went over
to his mother's property,

and decided he would
go see his mom.

And then they have
a sick cow named Oreo.

[St. Amant] He claims
that he was by Oreo's side

when Bob Poynter was shot.

So, his alibi
for Bob Poynter's murder is

actually that he's taking care
of a sick cow,

out in the fields.

I almost fell
out of the chair.

I didn't wanna
lose my composure,

you don't wanna do that
as a prosecutor,

but that was one
of the most laughable moments

I think I've ever had
as a prosecutor.

On July 20th, 2018,
Michael Garza is

convicted of murder

and sentenced
to 99 years in prison.

[Starnes] He had to have been
sitting there thinking,

"Man, how dumb am I?

How did I fall? How did I...
she... get me into this?"

I saw him on the stand

and I realized
that he was just a puppet

and he didn't even know it.

[Kaiser] Authorities think
Chacey helped

to plan the murder
at the very least.

But do they have enough proof
to convince a jury?

Prosecutors believe that
there's more to the story.

As they sift through
the thousands of text messages

on Chacey's phone,

they discover
that Michael Garza was

not the only man she was
trying to seduce and convince

to kill her husband.

[Burk] Based
on the investigation,

you know, the interrogation
with Chacey,

we knew that she was
definitely involved.

In June 2019, the trial
of Chacey Poynter begins.

[Grogan] Chacey Poynter's
defense at trial,

she tried to stick
to the original story,

the narrative that she gave
Detective Burk

two years earlier
in that interview room in Royse City, which is,

she didn't know this was
gonna happen, she never wanted

her husband harmed
or murdered,

and that Michael Garza
ultimately decided

to do this on his own.

For her to sit there
and say that she just wanted

Garza to scare Bob.

I mean, the guy is
6'4, 260-280,

he runs into burning buildings
for a living.

You're not gonna
scare that man.

[Kaiser] Clearly, Chacey knew
that Garza would kill Bob.

Because she put him up to it.

And police have discovered,

he wasn't the only one

she tried to groom
for the job.

[St. Amant]
Chacey Poynter claimed

that the murder of her husband

had been planned
by Michael Garza.

But her text messages show

that Chacey was
having multiple affairs

with men all over
the Dallas area.

[Burk] In several
text messages

to several different men,

it's almost like she's
testing the waters.

She would make comments
that she needs him gone now.

And that she just needs
Robert to die in a fire

so that she could, you know,
have his financial backing

to continue her life.

And whenever
she would push the issue

about somebody helping her
or doing something,

majority of the men would
always respond

with "Well, there's
nothing I can do."

All of them except for one
wouldn't take the bait.

To their credit. They saw

that this is beyond what
they were willing to get into.

Except for one. Michael Garza.

Chacey claimed that she was
in an abusive relationship.

When we looked into that,

we couldn't find
any evidence of it.

No 911 calls
of domestic violence,

no offense reports,
no medical records,

nothing to corroborate
that Robert Poynter was

a abusive-type person.

[Starnes] 'Cause it's
the farthest thing from the truth.

All the lies
about him hitting her

and being
physically abusive and...

and, you know...
I mean... hey.

You could go back
and look at all her damn Facebook pictures.

She's wearing
like the smallest shirt she could possibly wear,

and cut-off shorts

and there's not a mark
or bruise anywhere on her.

They even contacted
his ex-wife Amy

and she had
no claims of abuse.

It appears that
Chacey fabricated

this story in whole cloth.

So, Bob Poynter was never
abusive towards Chacey.

She concocted that lie,
and smeared his good name.

All to convince one
of the men she was seeing

to feel sorry for her,

in hopes
that he would kill Bob.

It was all a cunning act
of manipulation.

[Burk] Everybody wants
to know the why.

Everything pointed
to one thing and that was money.

[St. Amant] Bob had already
been through one divorce.

And so, when he went into
his marriage with Chacey,

he had her sign
a pre-nuptial agreement.

So, a lot
of his assets were protected.

But one that wasn't was
his life insurance policy.

Chacey was
the sole beneficiary

on a nearly $700,000
life insurance policy.

He knew she wasn't
gonna get anything

because of the prenup
they had signed and so,

that was his way
of just trying to keep the peace with her,

that she's
on the life insurance policy,

"In case something happens
to me at the firehouse."

[St. Amant] It appears
that she saw

the only way out
of the marriage was

to go out
with financial benefit.

And so, that brought up

the idea of murder.

Unfortunately for
Michael Garza,

he was used totally as a pawn
in this murder scheme.

He really had nothing to gain
by killing Bob Poynter,

but Chacey was able
to manipulate him

and convince him

that he needed to do this
to protect her honor.

She found somebody
who was gullible enough

to believe her stories

and somebody dumb enough
to follow through with it.

[Kaiser] Chacey used the lie
that she was being abused

to trick Garza
into killing for her.

So in the end,
she took two lives.

Her husband Robert Poynter's
and Michael Garza's.

All to get
Bob's life insurance.

[Grogan] The jury,
after deliberating

for several hours,
