Jewels 00:01:31.348 --> 00:01:34.505 When we are uncomfortable or anything unpleasant happens, 00:01:34.505 --> 00:01:37.017 we look to take refuge in something. 00:01:37.017 --> 00:01:39.818 Usually we turn to food, alcohol, sex, 00:01:39.818 --> 00:01:42.975 drugs, money, power or relationships. 00:01:42.975 --> 00:01:46.066 But none of these things give us the lasting protection 00:01:46.066 --> 00:01:48.546 or satisfaction we are looking for. 00:01:48.546 --> 00:01:52.572 When you understand you can't find lasting happiness in samsara, 00:01:52.572 --> 00:01:55.986 then the desire to find true refuge becomes strong. 00:01:55.986 --> 00:01:59.335 In Buddhism, we take refuge in the Three Jewels: 00:01:59.335 --> 00:02:02.427 The Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. 00:02:02.427 --> 00:02:05.615 The Buddha is like the doctor who understands your disease 00:02:05.615 --> 00:02:07.837 and knows how to treat it. 00:02:07.837 --> 00:02:11.316 The Dharma, his teachings, is the medicine he prescribes 00:02:11.316 --> 00:02:15.728 and the Sangha is a spiritual community that helps you to take the medicine. 00:02:15.728 --> 00:02:18.626 To take refuge is to finally seek protection from suffering 00:02:18.626 --> 00:02:21.106 in a way that can really help you. 00:02:21.106 --> 00:02:23.714 When we think about the ultimate nature of reality 00:02:23.714 --> 00:02:28.803 and what causes us to suffer, this is the true meaning of refuge. 00:02:29.434 --> 00:02:39.834 MOTIVATION 00:02:41.492 --> 00:02:44.487 Before listening to these, or any teachings, 00:02:44.487 --> 00:02:50.541 it's essential to prepare one's heart and mind in the appropriate way, 00:02:50.541 --> 00:02:54.567 to set one's attitude in the highest intention 00:02:54.567 --> 00:02:58.368 to be able to benefit all living beings. 00:02:58.368 --> 00:03:01.620 Now, you are about to listen to teachings on taking refuge 00:03:01.620 --> 00:03:04.550 in the three jewels, Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. 00:03:04.550 --> 00:03:11.378 And this motivation in and of itself is taking refuge, 00:03:11.378 --> 00:03:14.567 is taking refuge in the path to enlightenment. 00:03:14.567 --> 00:03:19.526 So in order to gain the most from listening to these teachings, 00:03:19.526 --> 00:03:25.227 right now generate in your mind strongly the determination 00:03:25.227 --> 00:03:29.220 to be able to achieve enlightenment as quickly as possible 00:03:29.220 --> 00:03:32.312 in order to be at the highest benefit 00:03:32.312 --> 00:03:35.404 to each and every suffering living being. 00:03:36.134 --> 00:03:44.335 TEACHERS 00:03:57.113 --> 00:04:03.835 Venerable Thubten Dhondrub is a fully ordained Australian monk with over twenty-six years of experience in Tibetan Buddhist practice. 00:04:03.835 --> 00:04:10.480 He has taught at FPMT Centers in thirteen different countries around the world. 00:04:10.480 --> 00:04:17.427 He is well known for his accessible teaching style, extensive knowledge, sincere heart, and tangible humility. 00:04:25.998 --> 00:04:30.055 We may think that taking refuge is just a Buddhist thing, 00:04:30.055 --> 00:04:36.497 a Buddhist topic, but actually we've been doing it all our life. 00:04:36.497 --> 00:04:41.714 We always try to take some kind of refuge, go for refuge, 00:04:41.714 --> 00:04:44.806 when we notice that we're suffering, 00:04:44.806 --> 00:04:48.188 and of course, when we are very young, 00:04:48.188 --> 00:04:51.890 the first refuge we had was our mother. 00:04:51.890 --> 00:04:56.529 Whenever something went wrong, we went running to our mother. 00:04:56.529 --> 00:05:00.876 And she was quite a wonderful refuge as a child, 00:05:00.876 --> 00:05:05.643 seemed to solve all our problems for us, or most of them. 00:05:05.643 --> 00:05:10.215 But as we grew older, then we found that maybe 00:05:10.215 --> 00:05:13.243 our mother couldn't solve all our problems, 00:05:13.243 --> 00:05:18.493 so we discovered, or had to find, other refuges. 00:05:18.493 --> 00:05:24.708 And these were our friends, the friends we found 00:05:24.708 --> 00:05:27.639 and then as we grow older, 00:05:27.639 --> 00:05:33.146 we look for other refuges, particularly our wealth. 00:05:33.146 --> 00:05:36.914 We all believe, most of us most of the time, 00:05:36.914 --> 00:05:40.746 that money will be able to protect us 00:05:40.746 --> 00:05:43.677 from suffering and bring happiness. 00:05:43.677 --> 00:05:46.737 So we find a refuge in money, 00:05:46.737 --> 00:05:50.859 especially in our society now, this is the main refuge. 00:05:50.859 --> 00:05:54.949 It used to be religion, some kind of religion, 00:05:54.949 --> 00:05:58.073 now it's money or power. 00:05:58.073 --> 00:06:03.483 We take refuge in drugs, socially accepted drugs like alcohol. 00:06:03.515 --> 00:06:07.541 These are all types of refuge. 00:06:07.541 --> 00:06:13.112 We go to them thinking, hoping, believing that they will afford 00:06:13.112 --> 00:06:20.134 some kind of protection, somehow will bring an end to the suffering. 00:06:20.134 --> 00:06:26.285 Also food, this is a very popular form of refuge. 00:06:26.285 --> 00:06:30.761 Sex. 00:06:30.761 --> 00:06:35.817 Everything we do, actually, is some kind of refuge from suffering 00:06:35.817 --> 00:06:38.877 and also at the same time, we hope, 00:06:38.877 --> 00:06:44.223 not only will it stop the suffering but bring happiness. 00:06:44.223 --> 00:06:47.218 But, we discover with experience, 00:06:47.218 --> 00:06:50.954 that all of these different things that we've relied on 00:06:50.954 --> 00:06:54.657 as some kind of refuge are not a complete refuge. 00:06:54.657 --> 00:06:57.878 They don't completely solve our problems, 00:06:57.878 --> 00:07:01.871 they don't bring an end to our suffering completely. 00:07:01.871 --> 00:07:07.830 And some of us come to the Buddha Dharma 00:07:07.830 --> 00:07:12.113 because we've discovered that the things we've relied on in the past 00:07:12.113 --> 00:07:15.591 to overcome our suffering and bring some happiness, 00:07:15.591 --> 00:07:18.360 not one of them really works. 00:07:18.392 --> 00:07:23.223 And even all of them together, all of these ordinary forms of refuge, 00:07:23.223 --> 00:07:29.729 even all of them combined, don't work. 00:07:29.729 --> 00:07:33.272 They don't really stop our suffering 00:07:33.272 --> 00:07:37.394 and especially the causes of our suffering. 00:07:37.394 --> 00:07:40.679 What we need to take refuge in is something perfect, 00:07:40.679 --> 00:07:47.184 unbetrayable, pure mind free of all faults, possessing all qualities. 00:07:47.184 --> 00:07:52.465 And that is the definition of Buddha mind, enlightened mind, 00:07:52.465 --> 00:07:57.393 only that is unbetrayable, something that we can completely rely on 00:07:57.393 --> 00:08:03.384 and can give every solution. 00:08:03.384 --> 00:08:07.892 Because one of the good qualities of enlightened mind 00:08:07.892 --> 00:08:12.530 is that it is omniscient, knowing everything, 00:08:12.530 --> 00:08:16.974 so therefore it can't make mistakes. 00:08:16.974 --> 00:08:23.190 So when we recognize that we have suffering and the causes of it, 00:08:23.190 --> 00:08:28.987 we also recognize that this all arises because of ignorance, 00:08:28.987 --> 00:08:32.400 the wrong view of self that we have, 00:08:32.400 --> 00:08:37.875 the wrong view that we have of the way all phenomena exist. 00:08:37.875 --> 00:08:45.250 So this poison in our mind, this afflicted thought of ignorance 00:08:45.250 --> 00:08:50.435 is like the worst possible disease that we could have. 00:08:50.435 --> 00:08:55.491 It's the worst disease because it gives rise to every other disease. 00:08:55.491 --> 00:08:58.874 The only reason we experience sickness and death 00:08:58.874 --> 00:09:02.255 is because of karma. 00:09:02.255 --> 00:09:05.314 And karma is created because of delusions. 00:09:05.314 --> 00:09:10.242 And delusions depend on the presence of ignorance. 00:09:10.242 --> 00:09:13.849 If we really recognize that, we have to find someone 00:09:13.849 --> 00:09:19.098 who is the perfect doctor and that perfect doctor is the Buddha. 00:09:19.098 --> 00:09:23.059 Because that perfect doctor of the Buddha 00:09:23.059 --> 00:09:27.472 has themselves freed themselves of every disease. 00:09:27.472 --> 00:09:31.755 They know every disease and the cure for every disease. 00:09:31.755 --> 00:09:35.394 They've cured themselves of every disease 00:09:35.394 --> 00:09:40.546 and they know how to cure us. 00:09:40.546 --> 00:09:43.767 And the medicine, the perfect medicine 00:09:43.767 --> 00:09:46.827 is the teachings, the Dharma. 00:09:46.827 --> 00:09:50.112 The Arya Sangha, meaning the ordained followers of the Buddha 00:09:50.112 --> 00:09:54.073 who have practiced intensively and gained a direct insight 00:09:54.073 --> 00:09:57.197 into the nature of themselves and phenomena, 00:09:57.197 --> 00:10:03.058 they are like the nurses who help us to take the medicine, 00:10:03.058 --> 00:10:03.197 they are like the nurses who help us to take the medicine, 00:10:03.197 --> 00:10:06.697 remind us when to take it, how to take it, 00:10:06.697 --> 00:10:09.403 in what dosage and so on. 00:10:09.403 --> 00:10:13.847 And they inspire us to do so. 00:10:13.847 --> 00:10:16.875 As an ordinary worldly person, 00:10:16.875 --> 00:10:22.800 we are always seeking happiness, in the external world, out there. 00:10:22.800 --> 00:10:27.245 And all our suffering and problems, we put the blame on that, 00:10:27.245 --> 00:10:31.753 on something out there, someone out there. 00:10:31.753 --> 00:10:35.875 But when we take refuge or when we do refuge, 00:10:35.875 --> 00:10:41.414 we become an inner being, we make this conscious recognition 00:10:41.414 --> 00:10:44.732 that the source of my suffering is not out there, 00:10:44.732 --> 00:10:47.985 it's within me. 00:10:47.985 --> 00:10:52.719 When we first take refuge, that's what we recognize. 00:10:52.719 --> 00:10:57.582 The moment that we start to recognize for our self and understand, 00:10:57.582 --> 00:11:04.022 that the real cause of my suffering is not out there, that it's inside, 00:11:04.022 --> 00:11:09.917 and that the real cause of happiness is not out there, but within me, 00:11:09.917 --> 00:11:13.201 as soon as we have really understood that, 00:11:13.201 --> 00:11:19.095 at some level, then we have refuge. We become an inner being. 00:11:19.095 --> 00:11:26.244 We realize that everything, good and bad, is in us 00:11:26.244 --> 00:11:32.782 and we have to work from within, cultivating the garden of our mind. 00:11:32.782 --> 00:11:34.650 When we become an inner being, 00:11:34.650 --> 00:11:38.418 we become a practitioner of the law of cause and effect. 00:11:38.418 --> 00:11:42.540 We see that that is the key to everything. 00:11:56.408 --> 00:11:59.501 His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso has lived in India as the exiled 00:11:59.501 --> 00:12:04.322 Head of State and Spiritual Leader of the Tibetan people since the Chinese occupation in1959. 00:12:04.322 --> 00:12:09.865 His Holiness, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, is one of the most renowned and beloved spiritual leaders in the world 00:12:09.865 --> 00:12:13.547 and has traveled over 46 nations as a major proponent of human rights and world peace. 00:12:30.462 --> 00:12:34.487 So as in conventional expression we say that 00:12:34.487 --> 00:12:38.577 if there is a threat, seek a refuge somewhere. 00:12:38.577 --> 00:12:42.442 So similarly in the context of spiritual practice, 00:12:42.442 --> 00:12:49.173 to protect oneself from the threat of unfortunate or unfavorable rebirth, 00:12:49.205 --> 00:12:52.168 one needs to seek refuge in the Three Jewels. 00:12:52.168 --> 00:12:57.804 So when we speak about taking refuge in the context of Buddhism, 00:12:57.804 --> 00:13:00.284 we must understand that actually 00:13:00.284 --> 00:13:03.376 there are different levels of refuge and different types of refuge. 00:13:03.376 --> 00:13:06.016 For example, the highest form of refuge 00:13:06.016 --> 00:13:08.786 would be that of a Mahayana practitioner 00:13:08.786 --> 00:13:13.617 where the refuge that you are seeking from 00:13:13.617 --> 00:13:17.674 is the threat of being caught in the extremes 00:13:17.674 --> 00:13:21.184 of samsaric existence on the one hand 00:13:21.184 --> 00:13:25.340 and isolated nirvana, solitary nirvana on the other. 00:13:25.340 --> 00:13:34.614 So, to be protected from these two extremes of samsaric existence and peace, 00:13:34.614 --> 00:13:39.123 you seek the attainment of Buddhahood 00:13:39.123 --> 00:13:44.437 that is the embodiment of Dharmakaya, Buddha-body of reality, 00:13:44.437 --> 00:13:48.044 and Rupakaya, the Buddha-body of perfect form. 00:13:48.044 --> 00:13:53.744 And not only that but also you seek such an enlightened state 00:13:53.744 --> 00:13:56.482 for the benefit of all sentient beings. 00:13:56.482 --> 00:14:02.343 And this kind of taking, going for refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha 00:14:02.343 --> 00:14:05.371 is that of the Mahayana practitioner 00:14:05.371 --> 00:14:10.910 and also the refuge that you are seeking from 00:14:10.942 --> 00:14:14.195 is much more comprehensive. 00:14:14.195 --> 00:14:21.538 So then, we can also recognize a second level of going for refuge 00:14:21.538 --> 00:14:24.726 where the protection that is being sought from, 00:14:24.726 --> 00:14:27.496 the refuge that is being sought from, 00:14:27.496 --> 00:14:32.327 is the suffering of conditioning, pervasive conditioning 00:14:32.327 --> 00:14:37.125 and also the suffering of being caught in cyclic existence 00:14:37.125 --> 00:14:41.215 and also your fear of the destructive power 00:14:41.215 --> 00:14:44.242 of all the negative emotions and thoughts. 00:14:44.242 --> 00:14:47.366 And in order to seek refuge from that 00:14:47.366 --> 00:14:50.716 you go for refuge to the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha, 00:14:50.716 --> 00:14:55.771 which embodies the total transcendence of cyclic existence 00:14:55.771 --> 00:15:01.183 and the sufferings, particularly the suffering of conditioning. 00:15:01.183 --> 00:15:09.620 And then there is again a third kind of taking refuge 00:15:09.620 --> 00:15:13.581 where the spiritual aspirant is seeking refuge 00:15:13.581 --> 00:15:17.188 only from a sort of an immediate threat 00:15:17.188 --> 00:15:22.921 which is the threat of being reborn in the lower realms of existence 00:15:22.921 --> 00:15:27.140 and having a tremendous sense of fear for that possibility 00:15:27.172 --> 00:15:30.972 and then seeking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and the Sangha 00:15:30.972 --> 00:15:34.676 to provide protection from that. 00:15:34.676 --> 00:15:37.864 So when we talk about this kind of refuge 00:15:37.864 --> 00:15:41.407 the threat that we are seeking refuge from 00:15:41.407 --> 00:15:45.239 is the possibility of suffering in the lower realms of existence. 00:15:45.239 --> 00:15:48.169 So when we think about the lower realms of existence 00:15:48.169 --> 00:15:51.777 we should not think of a place so far away in the distant future, 00:15:51.777 --> 00:15:54.804 this is not really the case, 00:15:54.804 --> 00:15:59.442 because what divides us from the present moment 00:15:59.474 --> 00:16:04.047 and such a possibility of next life in a lower realm of existence 00:16:04.047 --> 00:16:08.041 is simply the continuity of this breath 00:16:08.041 --> 00:16:10.810 that we all inhale and exhale. 00:16:10.810 --> 00:16:15.480 The moment that ceases, the next life is right there in front of you. 00:16:19.806 --> 00:16:26.090 Our lifelong dissatisfaction compels us to find refuge in Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha - Lama Yeshe 00:16:46.303 --> 00:16:54.234 Born in Sweden, Venerable Karin Valham met the Dharma at Kopan Monastery in 1974 where she ordained. 00:16:54.234 --> 00:17:02.100 For over twenty years she has inspired thousands of westerners with her teachings on Buddhism at Kopan. 00:17:11.646 --> 00:17:14.738 So we go for refuge, to Dharma. 00:17:14.738 --> 00:17:17.410 When we go for refuge, to Dharma, 00:17:17.410 --> 00:17:21.532 we go for refuge to Buddha who taught the Dharma. 00:17:21.532 --> 00:17:26.074 We go for refuge to Sangha, who are the helpers. 00:17:26.074 --> 00:17:30.099 So, the wish to practice Dharma leads 00:17:30.099 --> 00:17:34.061 to the practice of going for refuge. 00:17:34.061 --> 00:17:37.668 And the first advise, from the Buddhas, when we go for refuge, 00:17:37.668 --> 00:17:40.148 is to observe our karma. 00:17:40.148 --> 00:17:43.722 Be mindful of our actions, so we don't create negative actions 00:17:43.722 --> 00:17:48.392 to be born in the lower realms of existence. 00:17:48.392 --> 00:17:51.451 You know our mind is the cause of our suffering or happiness. 00:17:51.451 --> 00:17:54.157 It arises out of our mind, 00:17:54.157 --> 00:17:57.378 so it's much more important to protect our mind 00:17:57.378 --> 00:17:59.986 than to protect our body. 00:17:59.986 --> 00:18:04.044 It's much more important to protect a positive state of mind 00:18:04.044 --> 00:18:10.903 than to protect our possessions, our body and external things. 00:18:10.903 --> 00:18:15.766 But we have a habit of thinking they are more important than our mind. 00:18:15.766 --> 00:18:19.051 So we trash our mind, and we protect our body, 00:18:19.051 --> 00:18:22.143 so we have to learn how to accept 00:18:22.143 --> 00:18:26.717 trashing our body to protect our mind. 00:18:33.222 --> 00:18:36.926 Because it's with anger and hatred and aggression 00:18:36.926 --> 00:18:40.403 that we destroy our happiness. 00:18:40.403 --> 00:18:44.365 So my purpose is not to harm others. 00:18:44.365 --> 00:18:47.811 You think my purpose is to practice Dharma 00:18:47.811 --> 00:18:51.064 to extend kindness, compassion to others. 00:18:51.064 --> 00:18:54.219 So that you generate a state of refuge in your mind, 00:18:54.219 --> 00:18:57.440 remember, oh yes, ultimate purpose of my life 00:18:57.440 --> 00:19:02.303 is to awaken my mind to benefit others. 00:19:02.303 --> 00:19:05.974 For this I rely on the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha. 00:19:05.974 --> 00:19:11.128 We need these three jewels because they help us 00:19:11.128 --> 00:19:16.473 overcome our problems and put us on a safe and sound direction in life. 00:19:16.473 --> 00:19:20.371 But the purpose of going for refuge to Buddha, Dharma, Sangha externally 00:19:20.371 --> 00:19:25.458 is to develop those qualities within ourselves. 00:19:25.458 --> 00:19:28.293 You can have different meanings of refuge, 00:19:28.293 --> 00:19:33.542 because there is a kind of inner refuge and there is an outer refuge. 00:19:33.542 --> 00:19:35.732 And we say we go for refuge, 00:19:35.732 --> 00:19:41.529 we can also say I take refuge in my own wisdom, 00:19:41.529 --> 00:19:47.198 but since our wisdom is limited and we need to develop our wisdom 00:19:47.198 --> 00:19:51.738 we have to rely on beings with greater wisdom than ourselves. 00:19:51.738 --> 00:19:56.859 So that is why we rely on Buddha, who teaches perfect wisdom. 00:19:56.859 --> 00:20:00.691 So we go for refuge to Buddha, that's external refuge, 00:20:00.691 --> 00:20:02.859 So we go for refuge to Buddha, that's external refuge, 00:20:02.859 --> 00:20:03.783 to develop our own inner refuge. 00:20:03.783 --> 00:20:06.810 And then we go for refuge to Dharma, 00:20:06.842 --> 00:20:13.831 which is the wisdom itself in the mind of Buddha, 00:20:13.831 --> 00:20:18.340 that perfect wisdom understanding, relative and ultimate truth, 00:20:18.340 --> 00:20:21.431 understanding the law of cause and effect. 00:20:21.431 --> 00:20:24.781 And so we go for refuge in that wisdom, 00:20:24.781 --> 00:20:32.510 to gain perfect wisdom ourselves. That's the Dharma. 00:20:32.510 --> 00:20:35.602 And then we go for refuge to Sangha 00:20:35.602 --> 00:20:41.012 because Sanghas are the helpers on the path. 00:20:41.012 --> 00:20:43.814 They say that this state of refuge, 00:20:43.814 --> 00:20:46.809 generating a state of refuge and compassion 00:20:46.809 --> 00:20:49.901 completely stops lower rebirth. 00:20:49.901 --> 00:20:53.411 It is impossible to take a lower rebirth 00:20:53.411 --> 00:20:59.659 when your state of mind is focused on refuge and compassion. 00:20:59.659 --> 00:21:02.204 It blocks. 00:21:02.204 --> 00:21:05.971 So that's the best state of mind for us ordinary people to die in, 00:21:05.971 --> 00:21:14.409 to actually be in a state of mind of refuge, bodhicitta, compassion. 00:21:20.673 --> 00:21:29.158 The Benefits of Going for Refuge 1. We can call ourselves Buddhist. 2. We will be able to take pure vows. 00:21:29.158 --> 00:21:36.326 The Benefits of Going for Refuge 3. Our wrongdoing will decrease. 4. We will accumulate vast merit. 00:21:37.840 --> 00:21:46.540 The Benefits of Going for Refuge 5. We will not be reborn in a lower realm. 6.Neither humans nor non-numans will be able to harm us. 00:21:46.540 --> 00:21:57.641 The Benefits of Going for Refuge 7. All our good wishes will be fulfilled. 8. We will quickly attain Buddhahood. 00:22:05.434 --> 00:22:09.581 STUDENTS 00:22:11.334 --> 00:22:14.556 What does REFUGE mean to you? 00:22:20.720 --> 00:22:24.713 In the past, I often looked to drugs a good amount, 00:22:24.713 --> 00:22:30.510 for taking refuge, whether smoking pot, 00:22:30.510 --> 00:22:38.819 whatever various drugs I was doing, or alcohol. 00:22:38.819 --> 00:22:43.199 The teachings say that it's harmful to do activities like that 00:22:43.199 --> 00:22:48.706 and to my mind at the time, 00:22:48.706 --> 00:22:53.795 that wasn't so appealing. 00:22:53.795 --> 00:22:56.467 Like, I just wanted to keep doing that, 00:22:56.467 --> 00:22:59.334 going out and having fun with my boyfriend 00:22:59.334 --> 00:23:02.394 and taking drugs or getting drunk or whatever. 00:23:02.394 --> 00:23:05.034 But, more and more I started thinking 00:23:05.034 --> 00:23:07.932 about the teachings they were giving me, 00:23:07.932 --> 00:23:12.860 and that taking refuge in external things like that 00:23:12.860 --> 00:23:16.725 can't bring any kind of lasting happiness. 00:23:16.725 --> 00:23:20.010 I started to find that, 00:23:20.010 --> 00:23:24.293 not only were the experiences I had on drugs and alcohol 00:23:24.293 --> 00:23:28.577 not so fun anymore, 00:23:28.609 --> 00:23:34.824 and were actually more of a suffering experience 00:23:34.824 --> 00:23:39.204 and brought even more confusion to my mind. 00:23:39.204 --> 00:23:45.226 I found that the more I took refuge in doing my practices everyday, 00:23:45.226 --> 00:23:54.792 and going to teachings instead of to parties and to get drugs, 00:23:54.792 --> 00:24:01.329 and to voluntarily trying to quiet my mind, 00:24:01.329 --> 00:24:04.582 that the teachings were working, 00:24:04.582 --> 00:24:08.317 and that I was finding more stability inside, 00:24:08.317 --> 00:24:15.403 more peace, more ability to work better at my job. 00:24:15.403 --> 00:24:21.876 And I think the coolest thing about refuge as I've gone on, 00:24:21.876 --> 00:24:25.386 is that the more I wholeheartedly give myself 00:24:25.386 --> 00:24:28.736 to refuge and have faith in it, 00:24:28.736 --> 00:24:31.956 really cool things have started to happen, 00:24:31.956 --> 00:24:38.108 in terms of things that I've always really wanted, 00:24:38.108 --> 00:24:40.651 have actually been able to happen. 00:24:40.651 --> 00:24:44.934 The kind of people I've wanted to be around show up. 00:24:44.934 --> 00:24:49.637 Really amazing teachers keep coming into my life. 00:24:49.637 --> 00:24:55.466 If there's a teaching I've been wanting, 00:24:55.466 --> 00:25:00.007 it will almost drop into my lap. 00:25:00.007 --> 00:25:04.870 By and large, I'm a happier person than I was without refuge. 00:25:04.870 --> 00:25:11.729 And, it's my inner experience of having taken refuge 00:25:11.729 --> 00:25:14.532 that I've seen a change in my mind. 00:25:14.532 --> 00:25:16.753 I don't even need to check with anybody outside 00:25:16.753 --> 00:25:18.976 to see if they've seen a change in me 00:25:18.976 --> 00:25:21.230 or if refuge has made me a better person, 00:25:21.230 --> 00:25:23.710 because I've experienced it. 00:25:23.710 --> 00:25:27.285 When people ask me if refuge has made a difference, 00:25:27.285 --> 00:25:29.539 one hundred percent yes, if not more. 00:25:32.872 --> 00:25:45.601 Going for refuge is the basis for everything, just as the earth is the foundation for all exitance. - Geshe Wangyal 00:25:47.346 --> 00:25:53.432 Please dedicate the positive energy generated by listening to these teachings, 00:25:53.908 --> 00:25:58.691 so you can quickly attain Enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. 25258
