We live in a fortunate age. 00:01:18.451 --> 00:01:20.258 Maybe you think I mean the modern age. 00:01:20.258 --> 00:01:24.258 Actually, I mean Buddhism has taken root in the West. 00:01:24.258 --> 00:01:27.580 Until recently, qualified teachers of Mahayana Buddhism 00:01:27.580 --> 00:01:31.096 outside of Asia have been few and far between. 00:01:31.096 --> 00:01:34.129 We've had to travel to the Far East to find deep teachings 00:01:34.129 --> 00:01:39.935 in the subjects of compassion, emptiness, karma and Enlightenment. 00:01:39.935 --> 00:01:41.387 Today it's an amazing gift 00:01:41.387 --> 00:01:44.354 that we can learn about the ancient teachings of the Buddha 00:01:44.354 --> 00:01:47.516 through this 13 part video series. 00:01:47.516 --> 00:01:49.935 You will receive teachings from some of the greatest teachers, 00:01:49.935 --> 00:01:54.741 Tibetan and Western, men and women, living in the world today. 00:01:54.741 --> 00:01:57.516 You'll hear personal interviews with Buddhist practitioners 00:01:57.516 --> 00:02:01.774 who share their experiences of putting the teachings into practice. 00:02:01.774 --> 00:02:05.774 You will have the opportunity to gain some understanding of Buddhism 00:02:05.774 --> 00:02:10.612 and learn skills that you can use to make your life most meaningful. 00:02:19.064 --> 00:02:22.580 Despite our achievements with science and technology, 00:02:22.580 --> 00:02:26.258 we still don't know much about the mind and its potential. 00:02:26.258 --> 00:02:29.290 Yet in fact, 2500 years ago Shakyamuni Buddha 00:02:29.290 --> 00:02:31.774 realized the full potential of the mind. 00:02:31.774 --> 00:02:35.258 He understood that the mind is not just the brain, 00:02:35.258 --> 00:02:40.096 the mind is beginingless and it creates our experiences of the world. 00:02:40.096 --> 00:02:44.225 Because what we perceive as reality, is a function of the mind. 00:02:44.225 --> 00:02:46.322 Not only do we have the power 00:02:46.322 --> 00:02:49.387 to completely eliminate disturbing emotions like anger, 00:02:49.387 --> 00:02:52.161 but we can consciously progress 00:02:52.161 --> 00:02:54.838 to the highest evolutionary state possible: 00:02:54.838 --> 00:02:57.387 Buddhahood. 00:02:57.387 --> 00:02:59.838 Every living being has the potential to reach 00:02:59.838 --> 00:03:03.032 this limitless state of wisdom and compassion. 00:03:03.032 --> 00:03:06.225 Buddhism teaches us that as we begin to understand 00:03:06.225 --> 00:03:08.677 the true nature of our own mind we become happier, 00:03:08.677 --> 00:03:11.903 more peaceful, and better able to deal with problems. 00:03:11.903 --> 00:03:15.129 Which makes us better able to help others. 00:03:26.677 --> 00:03:30.548 In this 13 part series of Discovering Buddhism videos, 00:03:30.548 --> 00:03:34.806 you are about to embark on the study of Mahayana Buddhism. 00:03:34.806 --> 00:03:36.806 Now in the practice of Mahayana Buddhism, 00:03:36.806 --> 00:03:40.903 the concept of motivation is extremely important. 00:03:40.903 --> 00:03:44.322 For example, if someone were to give you a gift 00:03:44.322 --> 00:03:49.096 with an ulterior motive, say to receive something in return, 00:03:49.096 --> 00:03:52.258 then that would not feel like such a positive action. 00:03:52.258 --> 00:03:53.935 But if someone were to give you a gift 00:03:53.935 --> 00:03:56.387 just for the sheer pleasure of seeing the happiness 00:03:56.387 --> 00:03:58.935 on your face when you receive it, 00:03:58.935 --> 00:04:02.129 that feels like a very positive thing to do. 00:04:02.129 --> 00:04:05.032 In the same way, in our spiritual practice, 00:04:05.032 --> 00:04:08.612 motivation, the reason that we do an action, 00:04:08.612 --> 00:04:12.387 is just as important as the action that we do. 00:04:12.387 --> 00:04:16.580 Therefore at the beginning of each of these teachings in this series 00:04:16.580 --> 00:04:20.225 we are going to generate a positive motivation. 00:04:20.225 --> 00:04:23.612 A Mahayana motivation that focuses not so much 00:04:23.612 --> 00:04:27.935 on our own a well-being, but instead emphasizes generating 00:04:27.935 --> 00:04:31.870 the wish to be able to benefit other living beings 00:04:31.870 --> 00:04:35.516 and bring them happiness as much as possible. 00:04:35.516 --> 00:04:39.838 In Mind and Its Potential, the first in this series, 00:04:39.838 --> 00:04:44.387 we're going to explore the limitless potential of our own minds 00:04:44.387 --> 00:04:47.870 to bring happiness both to ourselves 00:04:47.870 --> 00:04:50.677 as well as to other living beings. 00:04:50.677 --> 00:04:54.096 And so, for this reason again, our motivation 00:04:54.096 --> 00:04:57.838 as we listen to these teachings is very important. 00:04:57.838 --> 00:05:00.838 So, let's just take a moment right now to generate 00:05:00.838 --> 00:05:03.451 in our minds a strong thought. 00:05:03.451 --> 00:05:06.741 The thought wishing to be able to use these teachings 00:05:06.741 --> 00:05:10.612 in order to be able to not only bring happiness to ourselves, 00:05:10.612 --> 00:05:13.774 but also to be able to bring happiness 00:05:13.774 --> 00:05:17.322 and well-being to the others around us. 00:06:13.354 --> 00:06:16.548 So ok, mind. Generally speaking in Buddhism, you can say, 00:06:16.548 --> 00:06:20.032 synonymous with the word consciousness. Number one. 00:06:20.032 --> 00:06:25.516 Number two. This mind of ours, in Buddhist terms, there's not one atom 00:06:25.516 --> 00:06:29.516 of physicality about it, it's not physical. 00:06:29.516 --> 00:06:34.387 It's interesting, in the Christian view, we talk about this sort of this part of you 00:06:34.387 --> 00:06:37.225 called the soul, that isn't physical, isn't it? 00:06:37.225 --> 00:06:40.387 Then we have the materialist view, which is, there is simply the brain, 00:06:40.387 --> 00:06:42.419 simply the DNA, the genes and that's it. 00:06:42.419 --> 00:06:45.129 So there's two views. Well Buddhism is neither of these. 00:06:45.129 --> 00:06:53.225 Buddhism has the view, that all of the mind, and what that word refers to 00:06:53.225 --> 00:06:55.838 is the entire spectrum of our inner experiences: 00:06:55.838 --> 00:07:00.645 intellect, thoughts, concepts, feelings, emotions, unconscious, 00:07:00.645 --> 00:07:04.354 subconscious, spirit, whatever you want to call you know. 00:07:04.354 --> 00:07:06.838 Instinct, intuition, you name it. 00:07:06.838 --> 00:07:10.516 All of this is encompassed by the term mind in Buddhism. 00:07:10.516 --> 00:07:12.419 All consciousness, ok. 00:07:12.419 --> 00:07:15.322 The other point, about this mind of ours, or about part of our mind 00:07:15.322 --> 00:07:17.903 which is where it again radically differs from all other religious views 00:07:17.903 --> 00:07:22.516 is there's not one atom of our being that's created by a superior being. 00:07:22.516 --> 00:07:24.064 God, Buddha, whatever you like. 00:07:24.064 --> 00:07:25.677 Nothing. Not possible. 00:07:25.677 --> 00:07:28.677 Buddha says it's just not on, it's just his view, from his own experience, 00:07:28.709 --> 00:07:30.741 has discovered this to be the truth. 00:07:30.741 --> 00:07:34.774 And the other interesting point which is where it differs radically again 00:07:34.774 --> 00:07:38.354 from all the Western psychological views is there's not one atom of our mind, 00:07:38.354 --> 00:07:40.935 our personality, our thoughts our feelings our emotions, 00:07:40.935 --> 00:07:42.677 that's created by Mom and Dad. 00:07:42.677 --> 00:07:46.225 I mean, big surprise, we have to stop blaming them. Ok? 00:07:46.225 --> 00:07:48.903 There's no part of our mind that comes from our mother and father, 00:07:48.903 --> 00:07:52.451 clearly the body does. Thank you mother and father, they provide us with egg and sperm, 00:07:52.451 --> 00:07:55.612 which is the basis of this body, how fortunate we are. 00:07:55.612 --> 00:07:58.548 So you know in Buddhist terms, your mind isn't physical, 00:07:58.548 --> 00:07:59.903 doesn't come from Mom and Dad, 00:07:59.903 --> 00:08:02.258 doesn't come from God or Buddha or any other superior being, 00:08:02.258 --> 00:08:04.290 clearly it can't come from nothing. 00:08:04.290 --> 00:08:07.935 We all know that anything you point to in this universe has a continuity. 00:08:07.935 --> 00:08:11.258 You know, this thing here, comes from metal and plastic 00:08:11.258 --> 00:08:13.903 and goes back and back, this cup, the same, the flowers, 00:08:13.903 --> 00:08:15.161 everything has a continuity. 00:08:15.161 --> 00:08:17.387 Suddenly there's one moment nothing and then one moment a flower, 00:08:17.387 --> 00:08:19.483 we all know that's absurd. 00:08:19.483 --> 00:08:22.225 So clearly with the mind it's not possible, same thing. 00:08:22.225 --> 00:08:24.290 So mind or consciousness, not physical, 00:08:24.290 --> 00:08:27.193 comes from previous moments of itself. 00:08:27.193 --> 00:08:31.774 It's like a river of mental moments. Mental continuum, they call it, you know. 00:08:31.774 --> 00:08:34.548 This whole idea of mind being beginingless. 00:08:34.548 --> 00:08:36.677 Cause if you follow this concept through now, 00:08:36.677 --> 00:08:40.419 intellectually, conceptually, you can't find any conclusion other 00:08:40.419 --> 00:08:44.000 than the fact that the mind has to be beginingless. 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:47.096 Because this process of cause and effect, chicken and egg. 00:08:47.096 --> 00:08:49.225 How can you have a first chicken? 00:08:49.225 --> 00:08:53.645 Christians and Muslims and all most religions point to God as the source. 00:08:53.645 --> 00:08:56.806 Where do I come from? From God. Buddha says no. 00:08:56.806 --> 00:08:58.741 You come from previous moments of your own consciousness 00:08:58.741 --> 00:09:00.516 so if you trace it back and you think well 00:09:00.516 --> 00:09:04.806 maybe it began thirty two years ago, maybe it began, fifty two lives ago. 00:09:04.806 --> 00:09:07.451 Any given moment, you say, maybe it began then. 00:09:07.483 --> 00:09:09.548 You have to say there was a moment of mind existing, 00:09:09.548 --> 00:09:14.580 so if it existed then,it has to have come from a previous moment, doesn't it? 00:09:14.580 --> 00:09:17.838 Conclusion, your consciousness is beginingless. 00:09:17.838 --> 00:09:19.838 This is the Buddhist idea. 00:09:25.483 --> 00:09:28.677 The other point that's so crucial is this idea of Buddha nature. 00:09:28.677 --> 00:09:31.838 What does this mean? Cause the big question, 00:09:31.838 --> 00:09:35.225 we all have these questions, we say, who am I? 00:09:35.225 --> 00:09:38.580 What is my purpose? Why am I here? 00:09:38.580 --> 00:09:45.451 Buddha says, the answer to those questions is, to be a Buddha. 00:09:45.451 --> 00:09:47.935 What's Buddha? Buddha’s Sanskrit, it means fully awake. 00:09:47.935 --> 00:09:56.580 And actually, all it's referring to is the fully developped consciousness, 00:09:56.580 --> 00:10:00.258 mind, beyond which it can't be developped further. 00:10:00.258 --> 00:10:03.741 What 'Buddha' means, a mind, a being, a consciousness, 00:10:03.741 --> 00:10:06.903 that's fully developed in all, simply speaking, in all, 00:10:06.903 --> 00:10:09.580 what we call, the positive qualities. 00:10:09.580 --> 00:10:14.419 And absolutely free of the negative ones. 00:10:14.419 --> 00:10:16.645 So simple. There's a simple way of saying it. 00:10:16.645 --> 00:10:20.548 And what Buddha is saying is, that is who we really are. 00:10:20.580 --> 00:10:23.870 We all possess, the term they use is, we all possess Buddha nature. 00:10:23.870 --> 00:10:29.322 Well the simple way of saying this, it's like lets use the analogy of an acorn. 00:10:29.322 --> 00:10:32.290 Mommy what's that? Darling, that's an acorn. 00:10:32.290 --> 00:10:36.193 'What's an acorn mommy?' Well, then she points to the oak tree. 00:10:36.193 --> 00:10:39.612 'Well that, will become that.' Oh, how interesting. 00:10:39.612 --> 00:10:42.516 So then you might say, what's the nature of an acorn 00:10:42.548 --> 00:10:44.032 or you might just say, what is it? 00:10:44.032 --> 00:10:45.806 When you see an acorn, 00:10:45.838 --> 00:10:49.612 what you're really seeing is a potential oak tree. Isn't it? 00:10:49.612 --> 00:10:52.516 It's a cute little brown thing, sure, you could use it for this and that, 00:10:52.516 --> 00:10:55.354 you could use it for jewelry, you could use it as a weapon if you like. 00:10:55.354 --> 00:11:00.516 But kind of, how dumb. What it really is, you see, what it's true nature is, 00:11:00.516 --> 00:11:04.451 what it really is, is a potential oak tree. 00:11:04.451 --> 00:11:07.258 So how foolish not to develop into an oak tree. 00:11:07.258 --> 00:11:08.870 Well that 's what Buddha’s saying. 00:11:08.870 --> 00:11:14.258 Mind, consciousness, which is indestructible, which is not created, 00:11:14.258 --> 00:11:20.096 it's true nature, what it really is, is a potential Buddha. A fully developped mind. 00:11:20.096 --> 00:11:22.677 It's not as if we have a choice about it. You have an option. 00:11:22.677 --> 00:11:26.516 It's not as if some people like mother Theresa are born to be Buddha’s. 00:11:26.516 --> 00:11:30.290 Kind of like potluck, not like that, no by definition, 00:11:30.290 --> 00:11:32.612 an acorn is something that if you give it all the appropriate conditions, 00:11:32.612 --> 00:11:33.838 will become an oak tree. 00:11:33.838 --> 00:11:35.419 It's not as if you can turn it into an apple tree 00:11:35.419 --> 00:11:36.806 if you want to, how stupid. 00:11:36.806 --> 00:11:40.258 So this is the attitude we have to slowly develop about ourself. 00:11:40.258 --> 00:11:41.838 What's kind of interesting now, cause 00:11:41.838 --> 00:11:44.290 we don't really know who we really are, 00:11:44.290 --> 00:11:48.709 Buddha says, we identify with this little kind of brown, undeveloped thing. 00:11:48.709 --> 00:11:51.322 Oh, I'm this, I'm that, I'm lazy, I'm fat, I'm human, 00:11:51.322 --> 00:11:54.032 I'm female, I'm no good, I'm special, I'm delicious, 00:11:54.032 --> 00:11:56.096 I'm ugly, I'm beautiful. You name it. 00:11:56.096 --> 00:11:58.612 We're kind of defining ourself by this little brown thing. 00:11:58.129 --> 00:12:01.096 How boring, how stupid, how short, tunnel vision. 00:12:00.774 --> 00:12:04.419 A Buddha which is your true nature, which is what your oak tree is, 00:12:04.419 --> 00:12:07.870 when you're fully developed, you'll have the fully developed two wings. 00:12:07.870 --> 00:12:14.612 Infinite empathy with all living beings. 00:12:14.612 --> 00:12:17.774 It's totally developed, but you can't develop it further, 00:12:17.774 --> 00:12:20.064 and this empathy would be such, as if they were all you. 00:12:20.064 --> 00:12:21.580 There's no separation. 00:12:21.580 --> 00:12:27.258 Huge wish, spontaneous wish, to benefit, each one, perfectly. 00:12:27.258 --> 00:12:29.774 Second, you'd have fully developed wisdom wing, 00:12:29.774 --> 00:12:33.064 which literally, in Buddhist terms, is called omniscience. 00:12:33.064 --> 00:12:35.193 My mother thought this was very arrogant. 00:12:35.193 --> 00:12:38.483 'Only God is omniscient.' But Buddha says, every living being, 00:12:38.483 --> 00:12:42.483 if you possess mind, your mind has the potential to know everything. 00:12:42.483 --> 00:12:45.129 So this is just something totally natural, Buddha says. 00:12:45.129 --> 00:12:49.225 That our mind has the capacity to literally know everything. 00:12:49.225 --> 00:12:51.870 And when we have fully removed all the pollution from the mind, 00:12:51.870 --> 00:12:55.580 all the delusions, then our mind will be in sync with reality, quite literally. 00:12:55.612 --> 00:12:58.645 Buddha says we're way out of sync with reality right now 00:12:58.645 --> 00:13:01.612 because of all the pollution in the mind. 00:13:01.612 --> 00:13:03.516 So when we fully develop we'll be omniscient. 00:13:03.516 --> 00:13:06.096 Omniscient, infinite compassion, and there's a third quality, 00:13:06.096 --> 00:13:09.838 not a wing, that's called, literally, if you like, omnipotence. 00:13:09.838 --> 00:13:13.548 The effortless power to do whatever needs to be done, 00:13:13.548 --> 00:13:17.774 to benefit each one of these countless living beings in the entire universe. 00:13:17.774 --> 00:13:20.645 To benefit them perfectly based on the wisdom 00:13:20.645 --> 00:13:23.387 that sees their minds perfectly and knows precisely 00:13:23.387 --> 00:13:25.838 what to do and how to benefit them. 00:13:25.838 --> 00:13:30.580 And that would include, in fact, the capacity, to manifest your own mind, 00:13:30.580 --> 00:13:33.548 your Buddha mind, in millions of forms, through out millions of universes 00:13:33.548 --> 00:13:36.935 for millions of eons, as long as suffering sentient beings exist. 00:13:36.935 --> 00:13:39.580 That's a Buddha, that's enlightenment. 00:13:39.580 --> 00:13:41.870 Enlightenment isn't just some kind of nice feeling, 00:13:41.870 --> 00:13:44.580 it's a little bit more than that. This is enlightenment. 00:13:44.580 --> 00:13:47.645 And Buddha says, that's you're true nature, that's who you can become. 00:13:47.645 --> 00:13:50.838 That simply is naturally who you really are. 00:13:50.838 --> 00:13:55.000 You're not it yet, but, this whole idea, of once you really appreciate 00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:58.258 what an acorn really is, you would treasure it with such respect. 00:13:58.258 --> 00:14:00.483 And this is the attitude we have to develop about ourselves. 00:14:00.483 --> 00:14:02.838 It's hugely inspiring actually. 00:14:02.838 --> 00:14:05.903 Which is why it's so important to hear this very first. 00:15:04.677 --> 00:15:09.064 So anyway, whatever our reason, we meet the Buddha Dharma, 00:15:09.064 --> 00:15:13.322 and in meeting the Buddha Dharma, we start to discover more and more, 00:15:13.322 --> 00:15:20.741 that the source of our suffering comes from our mind. 00:15:20.741 --> 00:15:23.645 There are external conditions for our suffering. 00:15:23.645 --> 00:15:26.806 Definitely there are many, many external conditions 00:15:26.806 --> 00:15:31.258 for our suffering to arise, but the root cause of our suffering, 00:15:31.258 --> 00:15:35.000 the Buddha taught, lies within our own mind, 00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:37.612 and in fact, even meeting the external conditions 00:15:37.612 --> 00:15:40.516 is something to do with our mind. 00:15:40.516 --> 00:15:44.322 So the more we understand that our own mind 00:15:44.322 --> 00:15:48.290 is the source of our suffering, and also fortunately, 00:15:48.290 --> 00:15:51.387 our own mind is the source of our happiness, 00:15:51.387 --> 00:15:57.806 then we begin to understand that the only way to be free 00:15:57.806 --> 00:16:02.387 of suffering is to change our mind, and to change it radically. 00:16:02.387 --> 00:16:05.903 If we change it a little bit, we will overcome 00:16:05.903 --> 00:16:08.741 a little bit of suffering. 00:16:08.741 --> 00:16:11.129 But if we radically change our mind, 00:16:11.161 --> 00:16:15.645 bring about a real revolution in our mind, 00:16:15.645 --> 00:16:19.516 and eliminate the disturbing thoughts from our mind, 00:16:19.516 --> 00:16:24.677 and develop all the positive qualities of our mind, 00:16:24.677 --> 00:16:29.774 then we can be completely free of suffering, 00:16:29.774 --> 00:16:34.419 and develop real happiness. 00:16:34.419 --> 00:16:37.387 Because again, the happiness that we're seeking 00:16:37.387 --> 00:16:41.838 is not something temporary, superficial. 00:16:41.838 --> 00:16:44.354 We may never have thought about 00:16:44.354 --> 00:16:49.193 what happiness we are seeking, but if we check up, 00:16:49.193 --> 00:16:52.483 we want a happiness that is perfect and lasting. 00:16:52.516 --> 00:16:56.903 Buddhism says that there is this amazing phenomena called mind, 00:16:56.903 --> 00:17:00.580 which is not the brain, it is not something physical, 00:17:00.580 --> 00:17:03.096 it is something formless, 00:17:03.096 --> 00:17:08.258 not having any qualities of physical matter, 00:17:08.258 --> 00:17:13.645 the mind is something which is clear, formless, and has the ability to know, 00:17:13.645 --> 00:17:19.677 in fact mind is the only thing that knows, experiences and feels. 00:17:22.709 --> 00:17:28.870 Mind's job is to know, in every way, the word know, 00:17:28.870 --> 00:17:34.774 we can analyze this word and discover there are many ways to know. 00:17:34.774 --> 00:17:38.774 Right now we ourselves know in quite indirect 00:17:38.774 --> 00:17:42.354 and superficial ways, mostly through concepts, 00:17:42.354 --> 00:17:49.225 mostly through reading, being told things by others. 00:17:49.225 --> 00:17:52.806 So right now, we are knowing in a very limited way. 00:17:52.806 --> 00:17:56.451 This is because our mind is being prevented 00:17:56.451 --> 00:17:59.290 from knowing perfectly, completely, 00:17:59.290 --> 00:18:04.129 by the disturbing thoughts that all of us have. 00:18:04.129 --> 00:18:08.064 So we can imagine, what it would be like, 00:18:08.064 --> 00:18:10.709 without these disturbing thoughts. 00:18:10.709 --> 00:18:13.129 None of them, whatsoever. 00:18:13.129 --> 00:18:19.967 There was nothing disturbing the innate ability of our mind 00:18:19.967 --> 00:18:24.483 to know and experience and feel. 00:18:26.322 --> 00:18:30.032 I think this would be an amazing experience, 00:18:30.032 --> 00:18:33.096 something truly amazing. 00:18:33.096 --> 00:18:38.451 Without these distractions, all this confusion in the mind, 00:18:38.451 --> 00:18:44.193 then the mind could just know. 00:18:44.193 --> 00:18:52.096 But is it possible to get rid of these disturbing thoughts? 00:18:52.096 --> 00:18:55.258 So this is also a very big question, 00:18:55.258 --> 00:18:58.548 this is what the whole Buddha Dharma is about. 00:18:58.548 --> 00:19:02.451 But also, maybe we can get some feeling that it is possible, 00:19:02.451 --> 00:19:06.322 because also, when we meditate, 00:19:06.322 --> 00:19:08.580 or try to meditate, 00:19:08.580 --> 00:19:12.516 if, by placing our mind on an object, such as the breath, 00:19:12.516 --> 00:19:15.483 although we're not able to keep our mind 00:19:15.483 --> 00:19:18.612 on the breath for a long time, perfectly, 00:19:18.612 --> 00:19:21.838 totally experience one hundred percent, 00:19:21.838 --> 00:19:26.806 the breath, become union oneness with the breath, 00:19:26.838 --> 00:19:33.387 still, by putting some effort in doing that, what happens? 00:19:36.000 --> 00:19:40.677 We all experience, if we try and do it for some time, 00:19:40.677 --> 00:19:45.612 that our disturbing thoughts, the agitation in our mind, 00:19:45.612 --> 00:19:49.741 does reduce. 00:19:49.741 --> 00:19:53.193 Yes? Hopefully we've all had that experience, 00:19:53.193 --> 00:19:56.548 at least one time. 00:19:56.548 --> 00:20:02.774 And for, at least for a short time, that the disturbing thoughts, 00:20:02.774 --> 00:20:09.806 they don't go away completely, but at least they decline. 00:20:12.322 --> 00:20:15.677 This shows, this is actually an indication 00:20:15.677 --> 00:20:19.290 that these disturbing thoughts have no power 00:20:19.290 --> 00:20:24.096 from their own side to control the mind. 00:20:24.096 --> 00:20:30.612 And that, maybe I can do my great demonstration. 00:20:37.032 --> 00:20:41.645 Normally, center directors don't like this demonstration 00:20:41.645 --> 00:20:48.548 because I've destroyed... but normally, our mind is like that. 00:20:48.548 --> 00:20:52.064 Completely shaken, disturbed. 00:20:52.064 --> 00:20:55.354 But if we stop, if I stop shaking this water, 00:20:55.354 --> 00:20:59.354 which should make the director very happy, 00:20:59.354 --> 00:21:05.612 then what happens? The water returns to its natural state. 00:21:05.612 --> 00:21:11.129 It isn't natural for water to be agitated, something else is doing that. 00:21:11.129 --> 00:21:15.354 And when you stop the agitation, the water, just naturally, 00:21:15.354 --> 00:21:19.612 without any other factors involved, goes back to its natural state. 00:21:19.612 --> 00:21:24.161 It returns to being level, still, and then, it also has the ability, 00:21:24.161 --> 00:21:29.387 when it's calm and clear, it has the ability to reflect things. 00:21:29.387 --> 00:21:33.645 When it's completely agitated, the surface of the water 00:21:33.645 --> 00:21:38.451 has no ability to reflect things accurately. 00:21:38.451 --> 00:21:40.838 We can also notice, 00:21:40.838 --> 00:21:45.967 that when we do even the littlest simple breathing meditation, 00:21:45.967 --> 00:21:51.290 our mind starts to become calmer and clearer, more still. 00:21:51.290 --> 00:21:55.741 Because that's its natural state. 00:21:55.741 --> 00:22:00.967 We've never experienced this natural state, 00:22:00.967 --> 00:22:03.419 but that is its natural state. 00:22:03.419 --> 00:22:08.451 And it always has the tendency to return to it. 00:22:08.451 --> 00:22:11.451 Think about it. 00:22:20.967 --> 00:22:24.548 Understanding the true nature of the mind 00:22:24.548 --> 00:22:30.580 has helped me gradually, over a period of about three years, 00:22:30.580 --> 00:22:35.032 of just sort of letting that filter down. 00:22:35.032 --> 00:22:40.838 It doesn't happen suddenly. It happened very gradually 00:22:40.838 --> 00:22:46.709 but say I'd wake up recently and think wow, 00:22:46.709 --> 00:22:52.806 I'm a different person. I have more self-confidence. 00:22:52.806 --> 00:22:56.387 Because you start to realize 00:22:56.387 --> 00:23:01.838 that you're not this limited, hopeless, 00:23:01.838 --> 00:23:08.483 helpless being who's under the influence 00:23:08.483 --> 00:23:12.935 of all these things outside and all these things inside 00:23:12.935 --> 00:23:15.612 that cause so much suffering. 00:23:15.612 --> 00:23:19.548 When people come to me and ask me about being a Buddhist nun 00:23:19.548 --> 00:23:23.193 and about Buddhism, many, many people have this, 00:23:23.193 --> 00:23:26.967 they've already decided that Buddhism is this dark, 00:23:26.967 --> 00:23:31.806 gloomy, pessimistic, nihilistic religion 00:23:31.806 --> 00:23:35.935 that talks about suffering and death. 00:23:35.935 --> 00:23:42.677 And we do talk about suffering and death a lot, 00:23:42.677 --> 00:23:50.096 but we talk about it in a way where we're looking at 00:23:50.096 --> 00:23:55.741 the situation that we're in and this is really the situation we are in, 00:23:55.741 --> 00:23:59.096 we are suffering and we have to die. 00:23:59.096 --> 00:24:03.870 But there is a solution to it, everybody seems to forget that part. 00:24:03.870 --> 00:24:09.161 There's a solution and the solution is that we have this pure potential of our mind 00:24:09.161 --> 00:24:11.741 and that's unbelievable that we can become 00:24:11.741 --> 00:24:14.774 these incredible beings, these Buddha’s. 00:24:14.774 --> 00:24:18.516 What they call Buddha’s, you can call it whatever you want 00:24:18.516 --> 00:24:22.612 but it's this potential to become 00:24:22.612 --> 00:24:25.870 whatever your imagination can come up with. 00:24:25.870 --> 00:24:30.258 A powerful all-knowing blissful being who can help everyone. 00:24:30.258 --> 00:24:33.548 I always wanted to help people ever since I was a little girl. 00:24:33.548 --> 00:24:35.193 I recognized that people were suffering. 00:24:35.193 --> 00:24:42.612 My parents were suffering, my grandparents, everyone. I recognized their suffering. 00:24:42.612 --> 00:24:46.225 I recognize my own suffering but as I grew up 00:24:46.225 --> 00:24:49.483 and became an adult my own suffering overwhelmed me 00:24:49.483 --> 00:24:53.838 so much that I didn't feel I could help other people. 00:24:53.838 --> 00:24:56.451 I couldn't even help myself 00:24:56.451 --> 00:25:01.612 and gradually through this understanding, 00:25:01.612 --> 00:25:07.580 and some little bit of taste, experience, 00:25:07.580 --> 00:25:13.064 that I do have this incredible nature. 00:25:13.064 --> 00:25:18.161 More and more I seem to be helping more and more people 00:25:18.161 --> 00:25:21.451 and thinking less and less about my own suffering. 28717
