Welcome to the Alfred Hitchcock
Hour.

My part of the program this
evening

is, as usual, remote.

In all my travels, I
don't know of any object

which has been more perplexing.

This would appear to be an
excellent place

for a picnic.

This is solid salt.

Rather a lot of it.

I expected to see another
one marked pepper.

There is another one nearby

but instead of being
marked salt and pepper,

they are labeled his and hers.

I would appear to be
introducing a biblical drama

but such is not the case.

Tonight's play is a modern tale

of two policemen, a father and
son

called Death of a Cop.

It is a story of revenge.

It begins in one minute.

(tense music)

(somber music)

- Aren't you even gonna
ask me what time it is?

- No.

- You bug me, boy.

Eight days we've been on this
stakeout.

You haven't opened your mouth
once.

It's not normal.

- What would you like me to say?

- Say your back side hurts.

Say you're bored.

Ask when your relief's coming on

or if you can have a cup of
coffee

or tell me about your love life.

- I wouldn't give you the
satisfaction

of admitting to you that my back
side

aches like a sore tooth,
that I am bored stiff

and I'd give my right
leg for a cup of coffee

so don't try to make me.

- How long's the old bag
gonna stand there anyway?

I ain't built for waiting.

- You're going to wait, Sammy
boy.

- Okay.

Okay.

Give me a cigarette, will you?

- When was the last time
we went fishing together?

- On my eighth birthday.

- Let's go again.

- Yes.

How about Saturday?

We've got a couple of days off

and a lot of catching up to do.

- Yeah.

Philip.

- Yes, dad.

- What made you come back to me?

After all those years, I--

- Well I guess it was partly

because mother was always
pushing me

in the other direction and
trying

to make me into something I
wasn't.

- Yeah, that's what broke up our
marriage.

- Yeah, I remember.

She was always fighting
you to quit the force.

Well anyway, when I couldn't be

what she wanted me to be, she'd
get mad

and she'd say Philip,
you're just like your father

and then one day I decided that,

well, that that wasn't a bad
thing.

- All right now.

Just as soon as she gets clear.

- Having something to
shoot for helped all right.

Look.

Six o'clock Saturday morning,
huh?

- Six o'clock Saturday morning.

- Good.

(dramatic music)

Dad.

- Car 87.

Car 69 calling car 87.

- [Officer] This is car 87.

Go ahead, Reardon.

- I think we've caught our bird,
Singer.

It's Wong's Liquor Store on
Phelps Street.

We're going in.

- [Singer] Be right with you.

- Keep your hands still,
mister, don't move.

- Here we go.

(gun firing)

- [Philip] All right, hold it!

- All right, all right, I heard
you.

- Hey, chowder.

- All right, freeze!

(gun firing)

- Take him!

(coughing)

- What'd make him do a
crazy thing like that?

I could've killed him.

- Just like I figured, Phil.

He's a (mumbling).

These boys (mumbling) deadly

caught off from supply of
heroin.

You watch out for 'em
like you would for cobras.

- You know this one?

- Yeah, his name's Sammy
Garrison.

His old man used to think he'd

be in prison some day.

(crying)

(foreboding music)

- Any luck with Sammy Garrison?

- Nothing.

You and Phil get anything
out of this other kid?

- Yeah, nice bunch of
obscenities.

Nothing new or original though.

- No, they don't remember
any other robberies.

They don't remember
Herbie Lane or his gang

and they never bought
heroin from a (mumbling).

- Could you get anything out of
'em

on Gabby Donovan?

- No, nothing.

- Put Malloy and Garrison
in the lineup tomorrow.

I wanna make a definite on as
many

of these robberies as we can.

Oh, Phil.

- Yes sir?

- That was a nice piece of work
tonight.

You'd have been justified
in killing Garrison

but I'm glad you were able

to handle the situation without
it.

- Oh, I wasn't in any really

Old thunderhead is getting
soft as a marshmallow

since that kid of his
turned up around here.

- Well, the weatherman said it

If he's lying, I'll throw the

(laughing)

Phil, I think I'll go over to
Eva's

and get something to eat.

What about you?

- Well, I think I'll go and
have some breakfast with mom.

- Still trying to keep her
happy, huh?

- Well, I guess I just
feel a little sorry for her

but that's not gonna change our
plans any.

(mumbling)

- Hi Lee, Rafferty.

- [Eva] Hi Paul.

- Hello Eva.

What is this, the only game in
town?

- It's the only game I
know won't be raided.

I hear the Reardon's did
pretty good tonight, huh?

- Now let him tell it, Trenk,

can't you see he's busting his
buttons?

- He's happy as a clam.

The only time old thunderhead
used

to smile in the old days was
when he

was snapping the cuffs on
somebody.

- Deep down underneath, I'm
really a very sweet person.

- Oh sure.

I found that out the first
time you arrested me.

The game was five card stud and
the pot

was a lousy eight dollars and 72
cents.

- Well we were both young again.

What was it the last time?

- Close to 400.

I'm coming up in the world.

Not very far.

But I'm afraid you'll
never be able to reform me.

- You're a rotten gambler,
Trenker,

and I use the word advisedly.

But you've never mugged an old
lady,

you've never sold heroin to
kids,

you never stomped anybody to
death just for the fun of it.

In my book, that makes you
a scholar and gentleman.

How's the lasagna?

- Indigestible if you're
gonna sleep on it.

Rita, he'll have a couple
of poached eggs on toast.

- Yeah, thanks.

Now tell us what happened.

- Well sir.

Phil got a special commendation
from the lieutenant.

- [Eva] Oh, that's wonderful.

(suspenseful music)

- Thought Kirby said not to use
that thing

unless you had to.

- Chico's been squawking loud

'cause I raised the price on
him.

Now if we can't talk some sense
into him.

- Hey Box, dock the thing, will
you?

- Hello Freddie.

Boxer.

You boys waiting for someone?

- Yeah.

- Why, Jocko Hanlin.

- I see, you going to a

- Man, it's a party.

Like they got beer and broads.

Hey, you wanna come?

You're awfully quiet, Boxer.

- Look, Reardon, I register
regularly

with my parole officer.

I'm gainfully employed with
the Lane Bottling Company,

a legitimate business.

I'm as clean as your mother's
wash.

- Well I'm glad to hear it,
Boxer.

Then you won't mind if I have a

inside the car.

- Hey, what is this, a roust?

- Hey Jocko, he wants
to shake down the car.

- Wait a minute, now wait a

Look, Reardon, I heard you

made one hit last night.

What are you trying for, a

- He's ambitious.

He wants to make
lieutenant the first year.

- Well his old man ain't made it
yet.

Even the other cops can't stand
him.

But he's nicer than his old
man, aren't you, Reardon?

- Get out, Boxer.

- Look, Reardon, nobody made any
trouble

around here so why don't you

and do whatever you were gonna
do, huh?

- You guys must be all hopped

You know the penalty for
interfering with an officer?

- Why officer, we just picked
you up when you stumbled.

- Now Freddie, we don't wanna
have anybody

say that we were interfering
with the law, do we?

- Man, I'm hep.

- Well the man wants
to look inside the car.

We'll have a nice drive around.

wouldn't you, Reardon?

- Hey, that's crazy, man, that's
wild.

- You guys are out of your head.

Where's Herbie Lane?

- Don't you worry about Herbie.

- Now you're starting to bug me,
Reardon.

(suspenseful music)

(foreboding music)

- Hey, one Reardon was enough
for this precinct, man.

I mean, nobody living could
put up with two of 'em.

- Well unfortunately, the
choice isn't yours, Boxer.

Herbie Lane doesn't run this
precinct.

- Your daddy should've told you
the facts

of life, boy.

- Now listen, boy.

At least six people saw
you force me into this car.

If anything happens to me,
you're just

signing your own death warrant.

- You're breaking my heart.

Your daddy just shouldn't
have turned you loose

all by yourself.

- You see, what Jocko
means is we got a lot

of good people around us on
Blake Street.

They mind their own business,
they don't get nosy,

they never talk about what
their neighbors are doing.

- Like three monkeys, you know?

- So you see, Reardon, we
can do just about anything we

want to with you.

- Well if you're smart,
you'll let me out of here.

- Not yet, copper.

We got things to talk about.

You see, if you was to
get off on the wrong foot

in this precinct, you could wind
up

in real big trouble, man.

- We're trying to help you,
Reardon.

Like why do you think
we're being so nice to you,

driving you around?

- [Boxer] You wanted to

Now do you see anything that
was worth all that trouble?

Boxer.

- Thought maybe he'd hidden

under the seat down there.

- And now you figure you
made a little mistake, huh?

- Maybe I did.

Maybe he just dropped a book of
matches

and was picking 'em up, huh?

- Hey, who's a smart cop?

- He got smart real fast, didn't
he?

I got this thing about cops,
Reardon.

I just don't like 'em.

I don't like especially those
who don't

know when to quit.

- I think I know when to quit,
Boxer.

Right now I'll prove it to you.

- A break he's gonna give us.

What kind of break, cop?

- You're coming to the tunnel

which means you'll be
across the state line

in a few minutes.

- So what?

- So if you take me across
the state line, Jocko,

that's a federal wrap,
kidnapping.

(screeching)

- [Freddie] I don't want
the feds on my tail, man.

(mumbling)

We've had our drive and we've

and I get your message loud and

so what do you say we call it a

- Yeah, Box, but he said that

But you never heard of

You don't have to take a
man across the state line,

do you, Reardon?

All you gotta do is get him into
a car

and ride him just half a block
where he

don't wanna go, right?

That's the big break he was
gonna give us.

- Yeah, I thought he
chickened out too fast.

- Get him out here, Jocko.

- This'll make old man Reardon
wish he'd never been born.

I had a gun under the seat.

Guys on parole, they're not
allowed

to have guns, are they?

And no one's allowed to have
three ounces

of heroin taped to his car.

You should've run along
when Freddie told you to.

(gun firing)

(dramatic music)

- Indications are he was shot
once

in a kneeling position.

Then three shots in the back.

- Like an execution.

- We don't know yet where it
happened.

- Oh.

Paul.

You killed him.

I tried to hold him, to keep him
safe,

and he wouldn't listen to me.

If it hadn't been for you--

- Please, control yourself.

- Paul, it's your fault.

- Reardon.

Phil was on his way to his
mother's place.

He always took the subway to
Blake Street

and he got the bus from there.

I don't think he ever made the
bus.

I think on the way he
happened on to something,

something that to him, at
first, didn't seem dangerous.

He wasn't just shot down.

He was disarmed and then he was
executed

and a thing like that isn't done

to men in a panic and isn't
done by just one man alone.

- Herbie Lane's gang?

- It's his territory.

- Lane's never gone this far
before.

Maybe he thinks he's big enough
now.

- [Officer] Even if Lane
didn't have anything

to do with it, he probably knows
who did.

Nothing much happens around here

without Lane knowing about it.

Not that it's likely
to be much help to us.

- Well he was young, he
had a lot of confidence.

He'd probably go into something
alone

where an older man would've
waited.

- Wait a minute, Paul.

You're going with Sam.

- You mean he'll run the show?

- For now.

- You wanna give me a reason?

- Because I know how you feel,

because I don't want
you to get into trouble

and I don't want the department

to get into trouble either.

Is that a good enough reason or

take you off the case entirely?

- Whenever you're ready.

Somebody catches colds in
this precinct, I get the wrap.

heard the news on the radio.

client's rights are respected.

- We try to observe all the
amenities.

the rest of you's go bird's eye.

Yeah, well I don't want no

the death of Philip Reardon?

at five o'clock this morning?

- I was upstairs asleep in my
apartment.

- Well did anything happen
here while you were sleeping?

- I didn't hear nothing.

- Where were your boys this
morning?

- At work in the plant.

- That must be a change for
them.

- What time did Herbie call you,
Chaney?

- Right after the eight o'clock
news.

- Yeah?

I thought might be a little
earlier,

- Called me at eight o'clock,
Reardon.

- You sure you didn't get the

under (mumbling) panic call?

- Because a cop killing is big
trouble.

An organization doesn't like big

at the executive level.

What'd the old man say about it,

- Mr. Lane is engaged in
a legitimate business.

investigating the murder

of Detective third class Philip
Reardon

which occurred between five
and eight o'clock this morning.

information bearing on this?

and eight o'clock this morning?

- Oh, I was right here.

You see, I gotta come in
early, I load the trucks.

- Sure, sure.

Who was working with you?

- Freddie Arnolds, Jocko here,

Pete Sampson, Al Jeffries.

- What do you think, Paul?

- They're lying.

The act they put on for us was
too good.

- The pressure seems
to be on from upstairs.

Chaney wasn't here just to see
if we

weren't gonna beat up on the
boys.

Well, the organization
may just be going out

of its way to avoid even
the appearance of evil.

- You can believe that if you
want to.

I've been watching their
faces and I say they're lying.

And I can't touch 'em.

- Paul, we'll need more than
expressions

you wouldn't think cop.

hoodlum

being worked over and
you'd do what you always do

when the Lane gang starts
something,

you'd go in your back room and
you'd hide.

- You wouldn't know he
was a cop until later

and even then, you might not
talk to us

though nobody warned you not to.

around here like a giant

but when the old man cracks his

just like the common folk.

(shattering)

It means like when a cop is
really bugging you, you dig?

Cops aren't supposed
to do things like that

and you call the precinct

and you tell the lieutenant to
get his boy

off your back or you're
gonna scream for a lawyer.

evidence.

It's time to forget about Blake
Street

Killer sits and drinks

holding on to this Lane thing

if I say hello to them.

gang?

and I'll get a witness who'll
testify

and that's not good enough, not
for Phil.

- You're letting hate
get the better of you.

you've lost everything

but you haven't.

Freddie and Jocko, make the pick

to make sure there's no trouble
about the payment this time.

- Who needs 'em?

I can take care of Holland

- Yeah, well.

- Cops, Reardon, Singer,
whole bunch of them.

Looks like trouble.

- Take it easy.

Keep your mouth shut.

Don't let 'em shake anything out
of you.

- Kirby, but what about this--

- Hold it right where you are.

You're under arrest.

Lee, go check the plant.

- May I see the warrant?

- Sure, there's warrants for
everybody.

I'll pass 'em around.

No, you do it, Singer.

I wouldn't want them to be able
they

hadn't been legally served.

- Yeah.

What's the charge?

- Threatening a police officer

in the performance of his duty.

- What?

- Conspiracy to obstruct
a homicide investigation.

Suspicion of illegal
possession of firearms.

Intimidating an officer.

- Oh wow, Herbie, he
must be out of his skull.

- Now wait a minute, Reardon,

who's this cop that's been
obstructed

and threatened, you?

- I'm assuming you gave
the orders, Herbie.

If you didn't, you ought
to keep a closer eye

on your boys.

- Framing, it's a lousy--

- Shut up, Jocko, shut up.

Herbie, we never even touched
him.

Never.

- Yeah.

Okay boys, there's no trouble.

Let's go.

(dramatic music)

- Singer, I want you to
take this place apart

and I want you to shake down
every one

of these addresses.

- The whole gang?

- The whole gang.

You look for anything you can
pin on them

and especially, you
look for a 45 automatic

that might've shot my son in the
back.

- Well that was a wasted day.

I never saw such slicked up
pads.

- The word must've gone out
to them a long time ago.

Avoid even the appearance
of evil I think you said.

I suppose the gun was safe at
the bottom

of the river five minutes
after Phil was killed.

- The lieutenant's still here.

He's probably waiting for a
report.

- Yeah, probably.

- Reardon.

Well?

- Nothing.

- I'm sorry about that, I'm
really sorry.

All right, Chaney, here's
Reardon.

You talk to him.

- In regard to this alleged
threat--

- Skip the legal phraseology.

- Do you have any witnesses,
Reardon?

- Where would I get witnesses?

Where are the witnesses
to the murder of my son?

The Lane gang took care of that.

There are never any
witnesses on Blake Street,

Chaney, you know that.

- Then you're in trouble

because my clients can prove
they

never saw you on the
night that you claim they

threatened you with great bodily
harm.

(suspenseful music)

(foreboding music)

- How do you mean they
can prove it, Chaney?

The usual round robin alibi?

Sure.

So it's my word against theirs.

- You take your word into court,
Reardon,

and I'll crucify you.

I could enter suit against you
now

for false arrest.

- Do us that little
favor, will you, Chaney?

Reardon has an unblemished
record

of 30 years to dedicated
service.

The son of a police officer
was brutally murdered.

I'd like to see how much
public sympathy you'd get

for that gang of clients.
