where the crew
is working the boomerang cut,

which delivered
a big payday last week.

But the two locations

are pushing Parker's
operation to the limit.

We're really struggling with
just having enough personnel

and, you know,
enough big equipment

to keep up with everything.

months left in the season,

Parker has mined
over 3,400 ounces

closing in fast
on his 5,000-ounce target.

But the breakneck speed
needed to hit his goal

is coming at a cost.

at all the equipment here

and it'd sure be nice
to have some operators.

We got a lot of ground
to get through there,

but it's making the struggle
very real right now.

so why not we repurpose
one of our truck drivers

and she's been running truck
for us for a bit here,

but this is a big step-up.
Running a wash plant,

you're not only operating
the loader,

but you're also responsible

for the wash plant
which means,

you know, the shaker deck,
the conveyors,

the water system
going through sluice runs.

So a lot to look out for,

but hopefully
she catches on quickly.

I'm pretty pumped
that I get the opportunity

to run Sluicifer for a bit,

so it feels nice to be able
to get back into it.

It's good. I love a loader
over a truck any day.

But this loader sucks.

But this stupid armrest
keeps slamming against the key

and turning the key off while
I'm ripping in fourth gear.

for three weeks.

on Paradise Hill.

He has huge stockpiles
of super pit pay dirt
ready to sluice,

but still needs to get
his trommel up and running.

Tony's trommel is shut down

conveyor belt.

Once again, his moneymaking
machine is not washing dirt,

and Tony's empire

to the side.

You don't want a belt
to ride too much to one side

or the other because it will
rub on the edges

and will actually wear
a [bleep] hole through your
seal and you don't want that.

[narrator] To adjust
the position of the belt,

Mike needs to tighten
the alignment rods,

a system of steel bars that
pull the belt to either side.

It should start sliding over
here real quick-like.

It's not supposed

So I'm gonna constantly
and consistently

keep tightening it...

until it sits
where I want it to sit.

we tighten or loosen it,

will not shift even slightly.

In his haste to install
the trommel last week,

Mike's brother, Kevin,

failed to correctly
level the conveyor.

The whole thing
is not level at all.

The conveyor is [bleep]

[Mike] The conveyor's bent
out of shape.

She's not level at the top.

trommel's feeder

conveyor belt is off-center.

The feeder connects
the hopper to the wash plant

and sits on steel struts
and columns,

which hold up the top end.

One of the columns is lower

and the imbalance is causing
the conveyor belt to drift.

Rather than adjust
the whole conveyor,

Tony's bush fix is to cut
through the lower column,

lift the conveyor with
a crane until it's level,

and fill the gap
in the column with a stack

of steel plates, which
will be welded in place,

realigning the belt.

Hopefully it works, because
enough is [bleep] enough.

it's a tough deal.

This is the toughest business
by a mile I've ever done.

Gage and Bryce are mining
gold on a 70-acre

claim at Eureka Creek.

[Brian] For us, mining up here
is like the family farm.

I grew up on a farm,
harvest would come
and we were 24 hours,

flat out for a month,
six weeks just going.

This is harvest
the whole season.

This is not for the faint
of heart.

Brian brought
his family north

to the Yukon to join him
in the search for gold.

[Brian] I know Gage loves it,
he's crazy about it.

Bryce is quiet,
but I know he's hooked.

Twenty-three-year-old Bryce

and 22-year-old Gage

have been full-time
gold miners

since they left high school.

I've been mining
since I was 14.

I started on a rock truck.

That was since
grade ten and...

Yeah, I've been doing it
ever since.

I've always been working
with my parents.

So it's... I don't really know
like what it would be

at a normal company

if I were to be treated
differently or not.

My dad is very go, go,
go gadget.

He's really good
at thinkin' new ideas,

more efficient ideas.

We try to be as efficient
as we can.

We're chasing hotspots.

The McCaughan family hunt

for small channels
of pay dirt

with the highest
concentrations of gold.

We see lots of other miners
do massive, massive cuts

and so that's just...
It's kind of scary to us

'cause then we're gonna have
to hire 10 more mechanics.

successful years at Eureka,

they're now running out
of hotspots.

[Brian] We're trying to find
our ground

for next year
that we wanna mine.

We need ground for the future.

[narrator] Last week,
Brian invited his neighbor,

Parker Schnabel,

to look at his operation,

hoping to lease land from him
in the future.

-Is there a lot more

We're coming to an end.

I'm looking for something
for this spring.

Well, we got married in '92.

And then we've run every kind
of business possible.

First we started
with siding and roofing.

Brian was a racecar driver.

So, then we built
our dot car racetrack.

And we started gold mining
in 2012

because the economy went
for [bleep] in Alberta.

Brian and I have never really
had a good working
relationship.

We've been in business
together

and we're total opposites.

Anyone who's ever worked
for us

knows the drama
between Sharon and Brian.

[narrator] To secure
their mining future,

the family want 1,500 ounces
this season,

but two-thirds
of the way through,

they've mined less
than a third of their goal,

481 ounces.

And Mom Sharon isn't happy.

This is the worst position
we have been in.

We had the late start
sluicing,

so we're way behind
that we've ever been,

ever in a decade of mining.

The bills are piling up and
I'm concerned, very concerned.

Obviously we're behind more
because of the rebuild
on the trommel.

Once we got into it,
we wanted it perfect,

but it took some time.

We're still aiming
for that 1,500

as my goal for the year.
We gotta have it.

[Sharon] You guys, what's
going through your head?

I think it's gonna be
pretty easy actually.

It's not gonna be the easiest

However,
I've heard all this before,

so, I'm concerned.

from their latest hotspot,

Well, to reach our goal

the boys are gonna have

is driven by two
steel wheels.

With one of the wheels
slipping,

it only has half the power
to rotate the drum.

Yeah, I mean at least
we'll be washing,

so we'll have some type
of income.

It's frickin' brutal. We're
not here to run at half speed.

I'll figure it out.

[narrator] Brian's quick fix
allows them to run,

but cuts their gold
production by 50%.

weighs 44,000 pounds.

With that kind of weight,

They're paralyzing.

You just feel so helpless.

Yeah, I've been struggling
with my mental health

for years.

My mom said it's pretty much
since I was 11.

So I started last fall,

talking to a psychiatrist

and he diagnosed me

with anxiety borderline
personality disorder

and ADHD.

I've been trying to hide this

from, I guess, the bosses
and most of the crew.

So I just don't
wanna lose my job.

Parker doesn't like that I was
trying to hide it from him,

so I won't do that
in the future.

But he's super-supportive

and wants to keep me here,

which feels really great.

I'm really happy I have
this big family here.

It's so nice to work in a camp

where everyone's
so supportive.

because, you know, putting in
a lot of hours,

everybody's tired,
