Narrator: History is often told
by the wrong people --

and the evening news.

In the slum
and the poor neighborhood

all around the world,
these stories,

they almost always
end as tragedies.

peaceful protests turned bloody
across the Middle East.

And Yemen, a poor
and misunderstood country,

made headlines.

Our story does not
make front-page news.

The dream of every kid
who grows up in the ghetto

is to leave.

But I think our dream

is to change the slums.

If you want to know
the history of hip-hop,

you will find it here,
on the streets.

You might call us orphans,
drug addicts, and gangsters,

but we are the real kings
and queens of hip-hop.

We have been told
that the life of the street

is all about survival,

but we are doing
more than just surviving.

We speak many languages
around the world,

but for me, my real language,

the language of my heart,
is hip-hop.

The world sees Africa as a place

where people cannot
do anything for themselves.

But when I talk about the world,

that is a lot of people
who don't live in Africa,

who don't live
in developing countries.

They usually show
the starving kids,

the wars, the unemployment,
people begging all the time.

But, you know, this is --
this is a part of our reality.

I'm not going to say that it
doesn't happen. It does happen.

But they also need to know
that the real Africa

is not only what they see
in the mainstream media.

I thought hip-hop was something
that all of us can be a part of,

something that can be
a part of all of us.

It doesn't belong to
any of our traditional cultures,

'cause the way hip-hop
happened in the Bronx

is not the way
it has to happen here,

because we're living
in two different realities.

The way it's going to happen
in India, the Middle East,

or anywhere around the world
is going to be different.

Narrator: The slums and ghettos
of the world

are often misunderstood.

Only one story is told on
the news and in the newspaper --

lands of famine and bloodshed,
homes of terrorism.

And when you grow up here,
you begin to believe in lies.

AJ: Well, see,
you have to understand,

first of all, when you see
a bunch of people with jambiyas,

their hook knives, and [Speaks
indistinctly] on their back,

they're thinking terrorist.

But when you're here,

then you see a whole
different side of --

You know,
they're beautiful people,

and they're probably the most
generous people on the planet.

Narrator: Scratch beneath
the surface of any news story,

and you will always find
something beautiful.

You will find another side
to history

unfolding before your eyes.

AJ: In 1993, I was a victim
of a drive-by shooting.

Once I recovered
from the shooting,

I decided I need
to get out of New York.

So once I left New York,
I came to Yemen.

Hip-hop, in the beginning,
it was fighting the power,

letting your voice be heard,

letting people understand
about your struggles.

I may not have what you have,

but I can do what you can do.

[Beatboxing]

I did a song with a group
of Somalians called S.O.Legend.

They brought to me the attention
of the refugee problem

that's going on in the world --

you know, how they're
kicked out of their homes

and kicked out
of their countries

and have nowhere to go.

It is here that you will find

I will say hip-hop is like...

the soul of the people.

The main thing is the voice,
the music,

and it becomes
the people's heart.

Narrator: In the 1970s,
thousands of refugees

fled Cambodia
to escape war and violence.

KK was born in a Cambodian
refugee camp in Thailand

and grew up in the streets
of Los Angeles.

He became a member of the Crips
as well as a break dancer.

When he was 18 years old,
he was deported to Cambodia,

to a land
he had never set foot in.

I was still trying to make
my life a better life, you know.

I didn't know I was going
or what I was doing

or what I was --
what I wanted.

And all I wanted was to just...

[Child squeals in background]

...just stay out of trouble
myself.

I didn't like what I see
at first, you know?

When -- When I came here,
I didn't like seeing kids

5, 6 years old
running the street

dirty, homeless,
begging for food.

You know what I mean?
I'm like, "Wow. Why?

Where's -- where's
the grown adults?"

You know what I mean?
Like, you see all these kids

running around,
but everybody ignored, you know?

Like, "Wow.
Is this my people?

This is how we treat
our own people?"

And I ran into a couple kids,
and they asked me, you know,

to teach them
how to break dance,

and at first it was for fun,
you know,

till I see a lot of these kids
don't go to school

or don't do nothing.

And I tried to ask for help
and see what I could do

and how I could help.

also known as BPU,

is a voluntary
nonprofit organization

which uses breaking and other
elements of hip-hop to promote

positive social change
and social responsibility.

We always tell people that to be
a successful b-boy or b-girl,

you need more
than breaking skills,

'cause if -- if you can't write,
if you can't read,

if you don't know
how to respect people,

if you have no tolerance,

then who's gonna
work with you?

But we try so hard to see
how we can use hip-hop

to help them reach their goals.

Ugandan beat break-dance battle.

He founded it.
It's called Break-Fast,

so he came up with the idea,
then he shared it

with about four other people
and they started it.

And it's the biggest
break-dance battle in Uganda.

And right now, he's one
of the members of the admin team

and he's in charge
of BPU finances.

[Laughs] It's crazy.
He's learned so much.
