A SONG CALLED HATE

We've known each other
since we were small kids,

because we're cousins.

We've always had this kind of special connection

where we get this very natural

and unforced flow

of thought between each other.

He's more calm and collected.

He has such a good
connection with language

and conveying his thoughts and emotions.

I'm more physical;
more emotional than Matti.

Or, I express more emotion than Matth�as.

It started in a high school
drama club setting

and then in... a circle of young people

here in Iceland doing poetry readings

and poetry events and publications.

And then just fiddling
around with Klemens.

He was always in bands and stuff.

There had been no idea of creating a band

or to bring a message
until, I think, we started

a kind of multimedia project

and art performance,

industrial-bondage band, Hatari.

I had just started
making electronic music.

It was just this kind of click of a second

where I was like, ''Hey, Matth�as!

''You should scream something over this.''

We are Hatari.

We're going to do one last song.

But first I have to say,

I have never seen such a
repulsive gathering of people.

And I think the first
lyrics he screamed was like,

''botnle�ja samf�lagsins
lekur yfir t�rnar ��nar.''

Like, the bottom mud of society

leaks over the toes of you

or, the toes of people.

And that's where the spark of the concept

around Hatari began.

Where we suddenly had a
platform to express ourselves

towards our surroundings and
the society we lived within.

And kind of this frustration of living

in a normalised society

which is completely and utterly absurd.

Rebelling is just a
healthy part of growing up.

But then you get more
oriented with your world views

and your political stances.

That can sometimes become
a source of outrage.

I think that's where this character

I do in Hatari comes from, in many ways.

Even though it's framed as a
political burst of outrage.

It's also just a personal
mode of expression.

I think it was in the summer of 2015

when Klemens first showed me

some of these recordings

and I thought it was pretty funny

and original.

Not that great, but definitely interesting

and something that
I wanted to get involved with.

And in 2016, we started playing
our first shows together

and started creating a bit of a hype

in the underground music
scene in Reykjavik.

At every point, when there's
a new idea with Hatari,

where it could be taken,
what we could do with it,

fantasising about what
the fuck we're doing.

There's this euphoria of just...

it has to keep going somehow.

Therein is the drive.

There's this added tension
of responsibility, almost,

because we've sort of
claimed to be campaigning

for all these noble causes,

yet we're on this
hysterically absurd track

that we just love to
take further and further

just for its own sake.

We've worked a lot with the contradiction

of being an anti-capitalistic band

that participates in a
capitalistic environment.

So we felt Eurovision was a, sort of,

a very interesting path,

going a completely different way

to what people expect of us.

The Eurovision Song Contest is

one of the biggest stages in the world.

And we knew that if we were
going to fuck around with that

we were gonna need a bigger team.

S�lbj�rt, our choreographer

got Andrean and �str�s involved.

Karen, she's our costume designer

and she brought Andri onboard.

We set up our own media platform.

Iceland Music News, run by
Geinar, H�kon, and Vigd�s.

Baldvin, he does our videos

and Ingi takes care of
our graphic identity.

I think it must have started

like most art projects.

Most art projects are basically

jokes gone too far.

And I think that's how
this must have started.

Wow, wouldn't that be funny

if we went for this
Eurovision, and ha ha -

and it would go to
Tel Aviv and all that stuff.

And then, I guess the joke
must have started to take form.

I think when they got
that song they realised,

''okay, we've got something going on.''

Because it's a really good pop song.

That's at the core of this matter.

I think that's a very important thing.

It won because it was damn good pop.

If Eurovision 2019 is
not a political affair,

then the Likud party is a pop band

We're coming from our own bubble

and we wanted to see things
from a different perspective.

So we got into contact with both

Israeli and Palestinian artists

and that's how we got into
contact with Bashar Murad.

I'm Klemens.

I am Bashar.

I've always known about Eurovision

but in the Palestinian community

it's not like, you know, a huge event.

My family has a non-profit music

and government organisation,
and nine years ago

we tried to get Palestine into Eurovision.

And we did a huge campaign and...

my mum was actually in charge of this

and she travelled to
Finland during Eurovision

and she held the Palestinian
flag at the event.

And then they banned the
Palestinian flag, after that.

It was after that?

Yeah, okay, wow.

Actually, since I was younger,

I always imagined that I'd be the first

Palestinian person representing Palestine

if we were ever accepted to be in it.

Now it's a very... tricky situation

with it being hosted in Tel Aviv.

How do you feel about it?

It's so full of contradictions for me.

And there's been a very
heated conversation

about it here in Iceland.

Because BDS asked for--

- a boycott, obviously.
- a boycott of Eurovision.

Or rather, put a lot of pressure

on the national broadcaster here

to just skip the competition

- this year.
- Not air it, right?

Yeah, there were 30,000 signatures.

Which is a big portion of the population.

I think it's great that you guys

are using this platform to
make some sort of statement.

Do you have any ideas yet?

Politics isn't something confined

PRIME MINISTER OF ICELAND
to parliamentarians or ministers.

Politics is for everyday people;

it's for artists,

it's for people doing all sorts of jobs;

people making documentaries and movies.

People are allowed to have
their political opinions

and when we come to artists,

I think they have a really special freedom

to use all sorts of strategies

to mediate those opinions.

We have to remember...

both Israel and Eurovision

are here because of the Second World War.

So we're basically dealing
with the Second World War here.

And there's consequences.

And his first conversation
with the Israeli press;

talking about the public
and media pressure

on them to boycott Eurovision.

Iceland is one of the two countries

in Western Europe who
recognise Palestine as a state.

There's a lot of pressure here in Iceland

to boycott this competition.

We thought maybe we can
take part and criticise

the Israeli government with discussion,

with art, with ideas,
rather than boycotting.

He actually says, ''We're pro-Israelis

''you should thank us for coming!''

Yeah, right!

We were told that 200 million people

could watch Eurovision and
I do want people's minds

to take them outside of
the Eurovision bubble

just for a minute

and think about the context.

I've always had this shield,
I would say, with Hatari.

It's a costume.

For example, just how
we behave in the media

has kind of changed that
because we're letting it

a bit closer to ourselves;

we're speaking with a bit more sincerity

to, I guess, the public and the media

but still in this costume.

We're still on these
terms, that we are Hatari.

So, there's a little bit
more of Matth�as and Klemens

and Einar being brought
forward in the guise of Hatari

but that has brought with it a more

kind of intimate, intertwined;

it's a bit more mixed up.

That makes it easier to
take things personally.

That makes it easier to be nervous

about people's reactions or expectations.

because I think the occupation

and we just stand there, all six of us,

I would love to make

Our idea was always, for example,

to work with Bashar, work with Trashy.

We're trying to bring Palestinian artists

in the forefront of our media attention.

But then that becomes complicated

when the boycott movement

calls on them specifically

to not work with anyone
to do with Eurovision

and then Hatari, in particular.

So now you're in conflict both with Israel

and with the BDS movement.

Basically it's a good
position to annoy everyone.

It's a good position for an artist

not to satisfy neither this nor that.

I kind of felt like I was
gonna fly into Tel Aviv

and there I would see a cab driver,

Benjamin Netanyahu kind of waving at us,

and then BDS kind of
telling us to fuck off

and then Gaza, or a
representative from Gaza

and the West Bank.

I felt like it was just
gonna be five people

that I was gonna go and talk to

and I thought it would be a really clear

and Hamas would be there.

But obviously it's just
tonnes of regular people

living their lives and
no one knew who we were.

people, other than Reem?

That was to ask them for their support

in convincing the BDS
not to turn on Bashar

if he releases a song with you.

Artists,

poets,

anybody who have an idea,

he must do his idea.

And he must have a big courage to do it.

six hours to get here

and waited in the lobby for
a couple of hours as well,

after we arrived back from the party.

And had brought us this letter

that he'd written to us,

This had obviously been kind of
lying on his conscious

and he'd been kind of studying

what we'd been saying in interviews

and seeing the possibilities of what

we could do and achieve.

Uri made this point of saying,

even if you don't win, but
still intended to protest,

that's something.

And we can have it on
tape that we smuggled

the keffiyeh that he gave us, this scarf,

this Palestinian sign of victory.

We are getting support from
very pro-Palestinian people

and that they feel that
this is the way to go.

It's the whole narrative of Eurovision,

which is supposed to be the peaceful,

unifying message that we agree with,

We feel it's important to bring across

I think I was affected just as them.

It was my first time going
there, and it's not easy.

And now just seeing my Facebook feed,

all my friends who are
saying, ''Boycott Eurovision!''

And then I saw people from my friends

who are writing about
Hatari, saying that...

''we appreciate everything
that they're doing

''but they're still gonna go perform

''as if nothing happened.''

Nothing is ever enough,
because what we're doing is...

There's not really an example for it.

And so we don't know what
the end achievement would be.

What the climaxes should
be, or what they could be,

- or what we can do.
- But we've done a lot.

We can be proud of that.

Whether we make a statement
in the green room,

or how or when the track is released.

You know, that's all great.

But to be honest, it's not at

In the beginning, when we first started,

And I just started panicking.

I was so upset and I
think I might have had

a mini mental breakdown or something.

Even when we were walking out

and people were screaming after us like,

''fuck off Iceland,'' and all that.

And that was very like...
reinforced it for me.

Because it's normal to bow your head down

when someone's screaming, ''fuck off!''

But at that moment, it felt like,

no, I don't have anything
to be ashamed of.

I am part of something that I believe in

and that's something to be proud of.

I know how it is to be in a country

being a gay man

and not being accepted.

We have to take pride in our diversity

and we have to find unity in diversity.

That's my narrative.

That's what I want to do.

And that's what I've been fighting for

since I was a little child.

that were being said to us

from many different sides.

And still going through
with what we felt correct

was an experience that
I haven't tried before.

I haven't taken anything this far before.

It probably changes you.

I think there was part
of us that was hoping

that we would get kicked
out of the competition.

At least, I was really hoping for that.

It would have been such a relief.

I don't know how much of
a relief it would've been.

If we would've got
kicked out of the competition

then Iceland, as a nation,
would have rejected us.

Yeah, we would have been
unpopular everywhere.

I saw what a triumph this was artistically

when I was in my daughter's school.

Like, she was eight

and all the school
