Now it's at this point in the course that I want to introduce the idea of starting your very own blog.

Now, the good news first.

The good news is that within Shopify, we already have a blog completely built in for free included.

So there's literally nothing to do there.

If you go down to your online store here and click on blog posts, then we can very quickly start creating

our own blog.

I'm pretty sure everybody on this course knows what a blog is, right?

So I don't think I need to describe that.

So basically just a series of articles building up over time.

So why would we even want to consider a blog?

Well, actually, there are two reasons.

The first reason is that we can drive free traffic to our store when we write articles.

Ultimately, they will get picked up by Google and other search engines within their natural rankings,

and people will visit your store when they search on certain keywords.

Now, in a bit later on in the course, I'm going to talk a little bit more about SEO search engine

optimization, which will help your blog post rank more highly within Google.

But there's a little bit of a cost involved with that.

So that's going to be in the next section when I talk about the affordable wins.

But right now, it can be a great idea just to start a blog, just familiarizing yourself with the process.

Now, the second reason for starting a blog is that it builds credibility and this has an enormous indirect

impact on your sales.

And what I mean by that is that when somebody comes to your site, your site looks great and everything.

If they see a blog with all kinds of fantastic information in it, it builds confidence with that customer.

They start to know, like and trust you, and therefore the chance of buying from your site goes up

enormously.

And so I hope you can see why.

For those two main reasons, creating a blog is a great idea.

Now, the thing that happens very, very quickly with blogs is that people aren't sure what to write

about, okay?

Not perhaps just in the beginning, but also in the long term, because when you start a blog, you're

in it for the long term.

You want to be creating content on a regular basis, perhaps once a week or once every two weeks or

once a month.

I mean, people write daily blogs more than that, but basically it needs to be a constant flow of information.

So the problem becomes, what do I write about?

Well, there's a reason I put this lecture in here at this point in the course.

And that's because we've already been looking at Facebook, Quora and Reddit in the previous lectures.

And I've been saying to you, that's going to be an amazing place to uncover your ideal customer, to

really understand their wants and needs.

And as you spend time on those sites, you're going to find it really, really obvious, the sort of

subjects that you need and want to write about.

It'll just happen.

It just kind of happens naturally as you wander through those sites.

So this is now the perfect time to start thinking about a blog.

All of the potential content is already there as you explore those previous sites and get increasing

number of ideas.

So I really would encourage you at this stage just to start the bare bones of your blog.

We'll build on it as we go, but just at the moment, just get going.

Maybe just create your very first blog post, just anything.

Just start writing something down, see what it looks like on your site.

And from there we can further develop this great opportunity.
