But it does.

People always seem to think
they're reinventing the wheel,

but nobody really does.

I think Sleafords have really come along

and come up with something
that's a good formula.

You know, they're a band with old men.

a lot of older people just understand it.

Neither of them are record collectors,

they don't really study music or whatever.

They just like what they like.

They're not, yeah, music nerds.

There's often a bit in it where

I just think that's awesome poetry.

I'm not really into a lot of poetry.

So yeah, I think it's the same as what

everyone else experiences in that sense.

You do get blown away by how he does it.

He's very good at it.

not fit in anywhere.

care that much, I think

about his life.

I think it's probably the
best way to maybe word it.

It was always a spiral upon spiral

and working in shit jobs

and just existing really, on a level.

- I've worked at this chicken factory

about 15 years ago, and it was alright.

I spent like 18 months there.

It wasn't too bad.

But I went back two years ago

and it was fucking horrible.

had written or something.

Just putting chicken in boxes.

That was probably the worst time.

- To be fair, I always
thought that he was gonna be

one of those people that,

'cause we have known each
other for a long long time.

I always thought he was
gonna be one of those people

who'd disappear off the radar

and then you'd hear that they were just

- I started writing in
the evenings after work.

Big long essays, if you like.

Monologues, just about my life at the time

and what I was seeing and thinking.

Which wasn't a lot.

Just to the shop and back

to get some cigarettes and beer.

But I managed to dress
that up in a way that was,

as I was writing it, I'd be laughing,

and I'd also be getting stuff
out that was on my mind,

hang-ups about people,

and just slagging people off.

It's a way of beating people up

without actually hitting them.

the first time I heard a
Sleaford Mods track, if you like,

was when he was,

'cause when he did the early recordings,

he was in the same building as our studio.

The guy he was using to help record him,

Simon, I think it was,

had a studio downstairs
from where ours was.

And I was in there making a cup of tea.

And I could hear, I thought,
I'm sure that's Jason.

I thought he was having
an argument with someone,

'cause I hear, you fucker! (growling)

By that, I was thinking
Jesus, who is he talking to?

- By the time of, well pretty
much all of the recordings,

by the time he was ready to record,

we were all pretty drunk anyway.

It was just like plug it in.

And I was like, that's cool.

Then we'd turn it up full blast

and he'd be like, play
it again, play it again.

And afterwards, we'd just
hear it over and over.

Then I'd take it home and have a think.

What is it, what's going on?

- He's fallen out with a lot of people.

Because A, through being a cunt,

and basically, B, just
telling them what he thinks.

Not a lot of, you know,
people don't like that.

He holds a mirror up to,

first I think himself
with the early stuff,

and now he's holding
it up to everyone else.

And I think a lot of what he says

is bang on, you know.

- Young people signing major
deals with big companies,

and they're just singing about,

they're just singing about love and just,

you know, I'm a great believer of love,

but for fuck's sake.

There's a lot going on.
- It's been done.

Who wants to hear that

if you're on 15 pound a week

and you turn the telly on

and some fucker's spouting on about love,

with a guitar in the middle of a forest.

I mean that's just shit.

It's not particularly
pretty what we sing about.

And a lot of the time, it's not very nice.

where he's actually got

I was just driving the
bus through Nottingham.

They got on the bus, went
upstairs, made the video.

I left the bus at the terminus for a bit.

I disappeared to the shop, came back,

drove the bus back to the city,

timetable pretty much.

to town the same way

and coming back here in
another 10 minutes or so.

- When I was at work I just
had to like pull the bus up,

jump off, make a quick phone call.

You can see, people were thinking like,

shouldn't be doing, basically.

I just was so frustrated,

I couldn't deal with
what I had to deal with.

I just thought I'd get better money

doing the Sleafords thing.

It was a weird feeling, you know.

I've not walked out of a
job for about 20 years.

So yeah, basically I just

drove back to the city, got off the bus,

gave it to somebody else,

and walked down to the depot

and said, can I see the boss?

And quit, simple as that.

On the back of like
quitting work and stuff,

it's just really sort
of catching up with me.

For them, it's been a shock as well.

It's just so much has happened.

They've got to deal with it
and come to terms with it all.

Now we're all full time,
it's finding a level.

But I think the next album is really gonna

just up things a notch.

It's gonna be a lot more interesting.

But also a lot busier.

We'll see if we can cope with it.

So we bought the boat
in Daventry, which is

kind of about here, I think.

And then we took it back up to Nottingham

and moved out of my flat.

And then we went over here

to Boston.

And then came back and went to Cambridge.

And then we'd just come down to London.

So the plan is to go over here to Bristol.

And then maybe next summer we'll end up

in all this Birmingham stuffs.

Before, when I'd get back to the flat,

I would feel a bit, you know,

when you sit on the couch

and like you say, you lock
yourself away from the world.

You do feel a bit depressed then.

You know, so the distractions

and everything are really good,

they kinda like pull you out of it.

And, you know, it's a totally
different environment.

You're not in a popular

Seriously, we've done

three years of solid fucking
gigging, promotion on our own.

Album after album, three
albums in three years.

and we've done it our own way.

And, people have come to us.

It's just been a real case
of people coming to us.

we probably needed somebody else there,

because it was getting exhausting.

You know, it was like health, healthwise,

So yeah, we just thought

we needed someone to, someone else there,

with the right movements, to come in.

just a really polite one
actually, from Geoff Travis,

saying that he really enjoys the band,

what we've done, how things are going

and how we've worked things.

And he wasn't, I don't think he was even

sniffing after the band.

Maybe, I think he probably was,

but it was worded in such
a really nice polite,

you know way, I actually
bothered to respond to it.

Most of these sort of things
I just, pfft, you know?

But, it just to me, it
just made a lot of sense.

I mean, Sleafords is a
very independent setup,

Rough Trade is the
quintessential independent setup.

And yeah, it just makes a lot of sense.

We could just carry on as we are,

progressively getting bigger.

But we would effectively be coasting,

which Sleafords doesn't need to be doing.

Sleafords is music for everybody.

It's about, it's for everybody.

So it's important to reach
as many people as possible.

And I think again, the Rough
Trade deal would do that.

If we kept it as we are now it would just,

you know, it would get bigger,

but it wouldn't be as big
a push to make it bigger.

I think that's what Rough
Trade are offering us.
