THE BREIDJING CAMP

2014 - It has almost been 11

since the first Darfurian
refugees
arrived in Chad.

We went to see what happened
to the Breidjing camp after so
many years.

We leave Paris for
N'Djamena,

where we will spend the
night

and we will be taking a plane
early the next morning.

N'DJAMENA

N'djamena is the capital of
Chad.

It is a very important
crossroads
in the center of Africa.

After crossing the bridge
over the Chari,

we reach Cameroon.

And Nigeria is right
there.

And Niger.

lies the Central African
Republic.

N'Djamena has also become
an important crossroads

as it is the gathering point
of refugees

kilometers away.

is called the "Iron
Mountain",

stands the Breidjing
camp.

talk to us.

The youth in the Breidjing camp

truly has an important role to
play.

We are young people from Darfur,

and have been in Chad
for almost ten years.

That's right,

we have been living in this camp
for ten years now.

In fact, as elders,
we have organized many
activities.

We have set up a committee of
young Imams,

an internal security service,
and other organizations,

including the women and girls'
committee.

We work hand in hand
to provide services to the
public.

These include community
outreach.

But we face many challenges,

especially during 2014
and at the beginning of 2015.

Here, the biggest concern is
food
because there is a food
shortage.

And water too,
as we also face water shortage.

So, the population is suffering
due to the reduction of food
rations.

People do not grow anything

because there is almost no
arable land
in this rocky region.

So the population suffers

by NGOs,

and most children are
malnourished.

Adults are also affected.

In the hospital,
the cases of malaria have
multiplied

patients
with no medication available.

malnutrition.

our students followed

our Sudanese curriculum,

tomorrow.

The Janjaweed are still there

and the Sudanese government
is still bombing with the air
force.

Is there a strike?

For ten years,

since our arrival here,

the children were taught

and got used to a manner of
teaching

that followed the Sudanese
curriculum

that we had brought with us.

This year, the Chadian state and
NGOs
decided to make a change.

The Sudanese educational program

was replaced by the Chadian
program.

As a result, students and
parents

are boycotting the school

by staying home.

That's why there are no children
at school.

Do these students who don't
attend school
go to the mosque?

This thing troubles us.

The children have been removed
from school

and only sent to receive the
education
offered in the mosque.

This is because some people
think

that the new program

has several disadvantages.

If it had been introduced from
the start,

everything would have been fine,

but it poses problems.

For example,
a student starting high school

will have to adapt to a new
program,

all his schooling was based
on another educational program.

This is negative for the student

and will cause problems in his
education.

decided
to rely on the education

offered in the mosque.

But if we go back to the
previous program,

our children will go back to
school

These people will go home
when there will be stability in
Darfur.

These students want to learn

the history and geography

of their own country.

It is important for the students
to learn about their country of
origin.

If they don't get this education

from a young age,

and using a Sudanese curriculum,

they risk not learning it
and losing this knowledge.

the population rejects this
program.

We are a bit upset
because this program annoys
everyone.

The population doesn't like it.

We want to follow
our Sudanese education program.

That's why children
do not want to go to school.

Ask that kid if he wants to
learn
the new program and he will say
no.

He wants to follow the Sudanese
program.

We can't force children
to follow a new curriculum.

malnutrition

complications,

the child has to be hospitalized
to ensure a better follow-up.

These are obviously not
desperate cases.

This little girl that we saw
today,

just needs to be seen again
in two or three days.
