We hand-cut all of them,

to make an 8-bit candy cane.

hand-cut jigsawed by us.

Everything was hand-drawn.
Kim painted it.

So why the 8-bit?

Yeah, we wanted to give it
the video-game look.

Yeah.
I love the controllers.

And you guys didn't stop
at just one.

I mean, you have
controllers throughout.

Just looking
at your house,

what I do love is you didn't
fill your entire facade

of your house
with lights.

You know, you kept it clean,
kept it simple.

Isn't that literally,
like, the definition

of an 8-bit game, too?
I mean, simplicity.

This is, like, one

of our first
larger-than-life props.

Kids love opening this up
and hiding inside there.

And then this --
What's the exterior?

The coroplast.
We love our coro.

- I'm the coro king.
- It's easy to paint.

It's easy to move.
It's not heavy.

Yeah,
you can manipulate it,

and it looks like
a big game console

with a little bow
on the top, too.

These are so sweet.

I mean, you just want to rock
when you see these.

You want to
just go nuts.

That's literally just
landscaping paper.

Kind of feels
like felty stuff

that's on a headphone.

You know, this is
all coroplast material

and literally sat underneath
my barbecue for two days

just to get
the rounded shape,

because it does not bend.

That's really incredible.
I don't know.

I loved sculpting
in college.

Well, you should have led
with that.

Now it makes so much
more sense.
I'm sorry!

We got
some pixel reindeer.

Each kid has
their own reindeer.

They each helped hang it up
and put the lights in each one.

That's cool.

But you can't, like,
look at this section

without checking out
Santa Claus.

You know, I was looking at the
shape of a controller one day

in the kids' room
and it was upside down.

I was like, "That looks like
it could be a sleigh."

Yeah, Santa could ride in that.
I don't know.

This is the largest
joystick controller
I've ever seen.

If you're gonna have
an 8-bit retro theme,

you have to go
old-school.

Oh, this game.
This is a classic.

This is high-tension cable
you're using...
Yes.

...to suspend this
in the air.

So these blocks just want
to naturally rotate down.

And spin.
Yes. And spin.

So you have to, like,
give them, like, two points.

Kim spent many nights
inside of those blocks

tying them.

There's a lot of sweat
and tears

in something
as simple as a square.

This is our VR headset.

This is for the younger
generation, Carter.

So hard -- Like, I hand-drill
every one of these holes

and you can't even use
a tape measure,

like, on curved things.

So, like, I'm using, like,
an old-school,

like, clothing,
you know, measuring tape.

How do you get them
so straight?

Like, literally snap
a line.
Wow.

So you spray-paint it,
snap a line,

and you're just, like,
drilling.

Yeah, but I like also, like,
the soft edges over here

because
it just feels real.

Yeah.
Where do you guys
put all this stuff?

Oh, under our bed,
in the attic,

in a back shed.
Attic, sheds, basement.

Everywhere.

Can we talk
about the choir?

Yes.

This is our way of celebrating
more than just Christmas.

These are 12 holidays

that are happening
throughout December.

We put in the front
to really bring everybody in.

The choir
is really sweet.

Do you feel like you just design
in 8-bit in your head?

I feel like
it is in mine already

just being here for the limited
time that I've been here.

Sometimes that's, like,
the hardest thing.

You want to put expressions
in people's faces.

You can't do that.
Can't do that.

Dan is being very humble
with everything he does,

but he also only has vision
in one of his eyes.

No. I lost my eye
in 2004.

It was reconstructed.

That landed me in the hospital
for almost a year and a half.

let this new injury

or I could rise
above the challenges.

I feel like in my life

I use heat guns to help bend it.

And then I hoist it up

and we tried to figure out
how to get a rope over it.

So I said, "I'm gonna
get a potato gun."

No, you did not.
Fueled by hairspray.

So I went and asked her
if I had hairspray.

And you're like,
"What are you doing now?"

With hairspray, right,
with Christmas lights.

It's amazing.
You guys are elves. I love this.

This whole thing is now
making a lot more sense.

Engineering at its best.

Carter, guess how many

We got to get

I cut little barbs in it.

It kind of helps us
keep our spacing up.

our gingerbread house.

So I used pool noodles

and used duct tape
to make the stripes.

We use donuts
for the frames.

icing dollops?

Guess what that is?

Loofahs and donuts.

You never thought
those two would go together,

and you guys figured it out.

This is some ingenuity
at its best.

This is our chandelier.

It's really cool.

I use metal conduit

and I bent it
into circles.

I just incorporated
the droopy lights.

And then I added
that L.E.D. ball.

Where do you guys
come up with these things?

Out of these
feeble brains.

This is our space area.

We got "Star Wars" on one side
and aliens on the other.

And I love aliens,
Carter.

I don't think
I've ever seen an alien.

This is what we call
the red, white, blue area.

We actually had a neighbor

that didn't want
a dog kennel anymore,

so we took one of his 10-foot
sections and put a flag on it.

Yeah,
it's a chain-link fence.

That's a dog kennel?
Yes.

Who knew a dog fence
would be perfect

for a flag.

This is our dog area --
dogs and cats.

Because we love animals.

We do take donations
for the Humane Society.

We've raised
over $200,000.

That is a huge number.

It winds up being about

their second largest fundraiser

at the gingerbread houses,

the first one was "donated"
by our children.

when we first started

put-up-against-the-fence train.

So I got online
and found this train

and a guy had built it
for his son.

He outgrew it.
It was a playhouse.

And so we bought it,

and we turned it
into a candy-land train.

And you just modified it.
We modified it.

putting up this display?

I started putting lights
on my mom's house

at an early age,
around 8 years old.

And over the years, I just been
adding more and more.

And I think this is my year
that I just went too crazy.

this started?

Alright. So we're gonna

So what is this?

Why do we have
a helicopter?

Well, for the last 10 years,

I've been working
for this aerospace company,

building helicopters.

I'm very fascinated
with flight.
Wow.

So just spin
the main rotor

and on the count of 3,
and lights will go on.

the best area

to really get a look
at the roof, right?

I got a piece of PVC pipe
and just cut it 7 inches.

Just constant measuring?

and then the blue is spaced
at 2 1/2 inches.

Wow.
And then, of course,

you got the helicopter
and then the Merry Christmas.

How do you get that
to stay up there
with the chimney?

Pieces of 2x4s holding it
in place in the back.

The chimney was
actually handmade.

It's so cool. Great thing
about your display is

there's so much batting

I just buy an adapter.

little pieces.

Now, this, my friend,
is a mega tree.

This one has
about 7,000 lights.

I just got a bucket and
I just filled it with cement,

put a sleeve in there
and ran a galvanized pipe.

Oh, cool. Yeah.
Kind of gives

a nice little balance
to your entire display.

Well, you have
this mega tree.

What about this tree
behind you?

So this tree, we put
some robins in there.

These are also acrylic
also.
Yeah.

And then these are some brass
bells from the '80s.

Whoa.
That's cool.

I remember these at
my mom's house when I was a kid.

No way.

So instead of a music box,
each bell plays.

That's so great.

Isn't it so cool?
Like, that's from the '80s.

You hear that,

and you just think
of the church bells.

That's really special.

I love these arches,

And how many arches?

12 arches.
3,500 lights total in here.

During the day, I got to move
them for foot traffic.

I take them off
every night.

I put a rebar in here.
I just lift it up here.

And you just swing it

Every night he's out here,

you know, touching them up
and, you know, bringing them in.

they're nice and tucked away.

that felt like a theme park.
