River of Lights is huge.

We've got
over 1,630,000 twinkle lights,

and that doesn't include
the over 700 sculptures

that we have.

We'll try and make
that one right there.

I'm a welder/sculptor.
Everything we do,

we try to get as life sized
and realistic as possible.

The work he does is amazing,
and how he can take

a drawing or a toy
and turn it into this amazing,

life-sized piece
is incredible.

Taniya's going to like

pretty up there.

I think Taniya's going to be
blown away

not only by the size
of our sculptures,

but the scope
of the entire garden.

And you cannot leave this

So what kind
of tree is this?

It's a baobab.

The leaves at the top
are like a canopy.

It's just beautiful.

I think the lions,
the fact that their heads

are moving adds
such a cool effect to it.

Yeah, it does.

I can see such detail.

Just the way
you laid the lights,

it kind of gives you this,
like, skeleton, you know,

like I'm actually seeing
the body, and my mind

can envision it
as a whole animal.

I'm going to do something that
I'll probably never get to do

in my entire life.

I'm gonna put my head
in the hippo's mouth!

You guys,
this is just awesome.

Aah! Look at this!

I think I just made the sound
that a T-Rex actually makes.

This guy's 56 feet long,
12 feet tall, 8 feet wide.

This is wild!
Look at the claws.

I see this detail.
It looks like the scales.

You know it's some type
of a reptile creature.

And then the underbelly
being a different color,

just the way it would be.

I am so impressed with
your skills and your talent.

And then just to make it look
like an old dinosaur,

I made his front tooth
sticking out from all the rest.

Amazing.

Just to start from the tail
and work our way to the front.

Everybody thinks that
it's a brontosaurus,

but it's actually
a brachiosaurus.

We call it One Ton.

He literally weighs
one ton.

He's 30 feet tall all the way
to the top of his head.

And how long?
He's 80 feet long.

18 different pieces.

So the really interesting thing
is how they get him up there.

The thing we do about that

is we got this
little mechanism down here.

So he's on a couple of wheels,
one on each side.

So the only way
we could put his head together

is to make it
like a teeter totter.

So we'll take his front feet off
and we'll lean him

all the way forward
down this way...

Really?
...and we'll put
his head together.

And then we've got
to pick him up

and lean him all the way back.

And then we'll put
the rest of his body together.

My point of view, from here,
I can't even put it in words.

I am quiet because
I am speechless right now.

That's incredible.
That's cool.

This is another fun one
to make, the sunken pirate ship.

but it's also very well known

that alien spaceships
take cows.

So if you watch it
long enough,

you'll get to see the cow

actually
go up into the spaceship.

the New York City

Winter Lantern Festival.

We can put our tunnel here,

and the Monkey King
should be here.

Just like Christmas
in the United States,

in China, we celebrate
Chinese Lunar New Year

with a lantern festival
for good luck.

This looks like you.

No.

This is real Chinese stuff.
We don't have tiny lanterns.

We have huge lanterns.

Two, three. Okay.

We have over a hundred artisans
back in China

who premade all the lanterns.

Each of lanterns basically
has like,

this kind of big structure.

Our artisans will use
steel wires to shape out

the frames of the lanterns.

We put L.E.D. lights inside,

then we cover the whole lantern
with Chinese silks.

We color the silks
and make it come to life.

Authentic Chinese design.

All the lanterns
we have this year are inspired

from an old ancient text
about all different kinds

of mythical creatures
and monsters.

This is the best memories
from our childhood.

Hopefully,
people will like it.

So how are we going

baseball field today?

Usually we do a countdown
to light up everything, right?

So today,
I'm going to teach you

how to count down in Mandarin.

Mandarin? Uh-oh.

I don't know any Mandarin.
Yeah, it's very easy.

So "3, 2, 1"
is like "san, er, yi."

And we just say,
"Light up New York,"

how about that?
"Light up New York," okay.

Are you guys ready

The three lanterns
you see here

are actually mythology creatures
coming from an ancient book.

This one is called
a Vermilion Bird,

and this one is called
a White Tiger.

This one is actually
not a dragon, but a tortoise.

Wow. That is one fierce-looking
tortoise.

Yes.
All the tortoises I see

are super slow.

So, in Chinese culture,

a tortoise is kind of,
like, transformed from a dragon.

Wow.
It's all metal structure.

And then we cover it
with white silk.

It almost looks like
a drawing.

Our artisans paint
everything you see.

This is just stunning.

This tree is amazing.

Yeah, it's
a mythical tree called
Fusang.

It's the biggest tree
in the world,

that connects to the heaven.

Really?
Yes. And also,

the bird is called Jinwu.
Okay.

So the Fusang tree
is actually the nest

for the Jinwus.

Jinwu, in Chinese mythology,
they represent the sun.

I think it is so amazing that
you have these lanterns here

which look
like a piece of art.

Add the story to it
and it comes to life even more.

There are so many things
to see here.

This is like a fountain,

but with Chinese
design elements.

They're so pretty.

The bird is called Jingwei.
She is a princess.

That fish looks like it's
jumping right out of the water.

Yeah.
We've got
a Christmas tree.

Oh, yeah. The design of
this lantern was inspired

by the Beijing Opera.
Oh, wow.

So there is something
like a crown

on the hat
for each opera singer.

Yes.
The ideas that you guys have

and the way that you can
walk through the display --

this is what it's all about
when you're looking

at the grandness of this
Chinese lantern display.

Definitely.

Ooh, this is
a scary-looking creature.

It's an evil creature,
actually.

You can tell it's evil.
I'm a little scared.

This lantern is called Taotie.

Taotie represents greedy.

So you can see its big mouth.
It likes to eat everything.

This is a new one.
Yeah.

I never saw one
like this before.

Yeah.

Look at this.

They're dragons, but they look
like happy dragons.

This is azure dragon.

In Chinese mythology,

azure dragons
represent east.

And this one,
the purple beast --

this one is called
Ya Zi.

It represents
aggressiveness.

I love how it has
the pale pinks,

but then it comes
into this vibrant green.

They're just so striking.

These lotus flowers,
they are so pretty and elegant.

This is Monkey King.

Monkey King was every
Chinese kid's superhero.

He looks ready to, like,
take on the world.

Yeah.

So it represents people
who will fight

against authorities.

That is incredible.

So this is a place
we called Shuilian Dong,

hometown of Monkey King.
Okay.

And it's
very beautiful there.

I feel like I'm opening up
a pop-up book

and I'm walking
right through it.

Yeah, it's like a wonderland.

coming together,
and I so appreciated

the beauty,

But now I bring it here
so the kids will love it.

brought it

for the heavyweight division,

but I do have more
heavyweight displays to see.

is an annual light show
at the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

The overall mission of
the Atlanta Botanical Garden,

our nonprofit mission, is to
display plants for their beauty,

for education
and for conservation

and research as well.

The garden transforms
from the summer to the winter

during Garden Lights.

The plants, they go to bed
for the winter,

and then we turn on the lights.

We say that nature shines
year round here.

So we're with
the fantasy flowers now.

We are all about originality.

The orchestral orbs can do
14 million different colors.

How would you like
a box of crayons like that?

Is that amazing?

It takes so much work
to get it off the ground.

I mean, starting with the tree
crews that have to come in.

Our vertical light curtain.

There are 529 strands of light
descending from the tree tops.

And if you laid those end
to end, it's 58 miles.

This is an original,
creative, urban chic light show

that doesn't have the things

that you would predict

And only about 60,000
of them hanging from

530 individual strands.

Wow. I mean, just everywhere
I look is just spectacular.

You're also among nature
in this most amazing way.

so intricate and beautiful.

There's daisies
and tulips.

These flowers are so playful
and happy,

and they're just sprouting out
from everywhere.

We kind of wanted an

unique displays.

It's really cool to me the way
you guys

integrated the gardens
with the holidays.

like a topiary.

It's actually made
of soil and fabric.

And during the summer,

she has about 17,000 plants
on her.

Her whole face is completely
covered with greenery.

And that hair!
That hair.

My goodness.

So the structure is
essentially a hollow structure

that we fill with soil,

and then we plant
the plants right into it.

You see these tiny holes?
Right?

This is where
the plants normally are

during the spring.
In her transformation

from earth goddess
to ice goddess every year,

we put lights in her hair
and then her face and her hand,

we paint it
with a reflective paint,

so then we shine lights on it

and you can see it
from far away.

Oh, wow.
Yeah.

Girl, you are gorgeous!

Isn't she?

So beautiful.

which is a French-designed
garden with boxwood

that create
these beautiful shapes.

Oh! The way that these trees
create this arch,

they create a tunnel.

I mean,
it really is wrapping you.

It's like a giant hug
of Christmas lights, isn't it?

Yeah, it is.
We like to think about it

as a cathedral of light
made by these trees.

It looks like that.

One of the fun secrets
creating this light effect

is that the light strands
can be no further apart

than the width of your hand.

Yup. Oh, yeah.

It has a very, very ethereal,
magical feeling here.

This is an art show
out of lights.

It really is,
and plants and flowers.

Nothing is better
than that.

This mega tree
is incredible.

Its about 40 feet tall
and, as you can tell,

it's sort of right
in the middle of a fountain.

And what's so cool
is that we actually dye

this water black so that it
creates a mirror effect.

Oh.
So when you look over
the edge,

it creates this infinity
spectrum with all of the lights.

That's what I'm looking at.

I can see that.

It's, like,
from infinity and beyond.

The never-ending
light tree.

That's really clever
to dye the water black.

Absolutely.

This is the great orb lawn,
and look what's behind it --

our city.
Nice.

Not a bad shot in the house.

That is so cool!

Beautiful. What a unique
concept. It's so different.

We wanted a statement
on this lawn,

and we really wanted
to show technology,

like, creativity
coming together.

The colors are so vibrant,
and it's so playful and happy.

We literally have millions upon
millions of lights

installed
throughout the facility.

They help add a little bit
of shimmer and sparkle

to our shooting star.

The shooting star
that we have

is the largest single piece
of decor in the state of Texas.

110 feet long, 40 feet high.

It's four stories tall.
This is one of my favorites.

This rocket is inspired
after the Artemis program,

which is what we're using

They go off a few times

help get our guests
ready for launch.

And then they get a chance

to peer up into the rocket.
It really is amazing.

You're educating kids
and adults.

They get to learn while enjoying
a wonderful Christmas display.

about bringing people

That is a constellation

the James Webb Space Telescope

looking back 13 billion years.

Well, this absolutely
is a holiday light display

representing all the miracles
and incredible things

about our galaxy and beyond.

I see Christmas trees,
I see tunnels,

I see lights everywhere.

There are so many cool moments,
like this right here,

that just kind of reach out
and grab you.

That's exactly
how we designed this.

Everywhere you look,
there's something beautiful

that draws you in.

The structure of this
is incredible.

It's so sturdy.

Yes, it has to be sturdy
and it has to be big

to scale next to a 747.

It's really
a fantastic element.

I see this
great big star here.

I need to get in there
and see it closer.

It is the largest single light
display in the state of Texas.

It's over 110 feet long,
40 feet tall.

I love the fact
that the lights are strobing

and these reflective circles
are on it

so it has that little sparkle
and the glitter.

It really makes it feel

that's about to happen.

What's happening?

Look up at the sky.

Wow! What is this?

So you are looking
at kinetic lights.

Look at that!

Something epic is about
to happen, I can feel --

Yeah, there it is!

They are
individually controlled

by pulley systems
and computers.

There's over 250 orbs
up there.

This is very cool.
It's so different.

We wanted something
technologically advanced,

interactive, something
for our guests to enjoy.

Kids will get down
and lay on the floor,

and so will adults.

Oh, I got to lie down
for this one.

This is actually
a much different perspective.

It's harder to see it when
you're standing up like that.

Oh, I see a wreath.

Candy cane.
Christmas tree.

You're always surprised
by the different formations,

and that's just like science,

always keeping you
questioning and thinking.

You guys keep bringing it
and bringing it.

There's no end to the fun
and to the lights.

And we've got so much more

This tunnel has millions
of lights in different colors,

and it really is intended

to fill you with wonder
as you go through.

I'm just mesmerized
by everything

that we're looking at.
It's, like, every time

I turn a corner,
there's something else.

Surprise!

Look at that!

It is 40 feet tall.

The strands themselves
are about 25 feet.

There's over 700 strands

in that entire
crystal fireworks display.

That is the coolest thing
I've ever seen.

Well, actually,
we have a strand

that you can look at
right here,

so you get a sense of what
it looks like.

Let me see
what you're talking about here.

And so this is the portion
that would hang down.

Oh! William, I thought
they were crystals.

They're based on the principle
of crystals

so that you get
the three-dimensional image.
Oh, I am teasing.

I would never imagine that they
would actually be real crystals,

but they really look
like crystals up there.

Don't they?
So it is a great illusion.

It's really, really beautiful.

Welcome to our light pods.

Here you have 290 pods,
and when you step on them...

What!
Oh, they're changing!

...they change different colors.
They're changing colors!

But we really feel that
this field represents images

from the James Webb
Space Telescope

and the limitlessness of space

and how they're all
these beautiful colors

that we're seeing
from infrared images.

William, you know I mean this

but all that nerdy talk to me
spells out

one kick-butt light display.

I mean, you guys really took it
to the next level.

Absolutely.

I had so much fun.

This was truly a blast.

from Atlanta, Georgia,

transformed a botanical garden
into an immersive experience

that combined the magic
of Christmas

with the wonders of nature.

Our brilliant bugs.

And an ethereal ice goddess
kept watch over it all.

We have liftoff!

Galaxy Lights from Houston,
Texas, was out of this world.

It's the largest single
light display

in the state of Texas.

They took me on an epic
space journey

throughout the solar system

and into a wormhole
to another universe.

That is the coolest thing
I've ever seen.

That's one small step
for Christmas

and one giant leap
for Christmas-kind.

All four displays were absolute
knockouts,

but only one can be crowned
the heavyweight champion.
