These towns sprang into being
overnight

and prospectors flocked here,

enticed by the lure of easy
riches.

Everyone wanted to get rich
quick.

And for a while it looked
as though everyone would.

Then the bubble burst.

No one even took the time
to turn off the ticker tape.

And lest I keep on running too
long also

perhaps we should begin
tonight's show.

In keeping with the
theory that we shall have

nowhere to go but up, we
begin with the following.

- Sure, the whole world's
full of problems, Miss Naomi,

in all of us.

We all gotta puzzle over
what we're supposed to think.

None of us, 'cause
nobody's gonna puzzle over

what we're supposed to do.

right there beside me.

- At the Mission?

- Yes ma'am.

I don't remember Aunt Naomi as

a Pennsylvania mining town.

- Perhaps that's my trouble.

- I had a vision.

- A vision?

Not really, a genuine vision?

- It was down in the
mines, very bottom of it.

You see, Laura, I was bad, I
mean rotten.

I was a drunk, liar, a
hypocrite, married at the time,

went around with other women.

Ah, I spend a lot of
time just runnin' around

grabbin' women.

I was a fool.

There was no sin that the
devil didn't lead me into

but what I didn't know was
the word was waiting for me.

- And what about the vision?

- Oh that was a miracle.

I was ah, I was 23 at the time.

I was working in what's
known as the lowest gallery

of the mine and just kinda
working and diggin', thinking.

You know what I was thinking

long-legged thing around town.

I was thinkin' how I'd like
to take her up the mountain.

- Nevermind about Alice

Anyway, as I was saying,
I was digging and thinking

and suddenly I heard a rumble.

Then a louder one and then
a roar and then there was a

terrible fall of rock and men
were hollerin' and screamin'.

There was kinda dust and
thunder, everything shaking

and everything tearing loose.

And just as fast, dead silence.

I realized there'd been a cave
in.

I was trapped and I was alone.

- Were you hurt?

- I wasn't hurt, I wasn't even
scratched.

But I was alone for 12 hours.

12 hours I was alone in
this little black hole

and I, I could hear them digging
for me, trying to get to me

but there was a second
cave in after the first

and then, well then I
thought I was finished.

- Well what did you do?

- Stared into the blackness.

I could feel my own fear.

I could feel it jumping around
inside me.

I started to pray.

The more I prayed, the
more I could feel this fear

and it got worse.

And I remember trying to control
it.

I remember trying to keep
it down because I thought,

I thought I was gonna go mad.

Then it stopped.

I saw a picture.

I saw my mantle piece at home.

I saw a photograph, a
phonograph of my family.

I saw my mother and my father,
my sisters, four sisters,

my brother and they were staring
at me,

just staring, that's all.

And I stared back.

I started thinking about them.

I couldn't think about anything
else.

Everything else went out of my
mind.

And that saved me.

- And that's all you saw, that
photograph?

That's what the vision was?

- I swore to my family
that if I ever got out of

that mine alive I was
going to cleanse my soul.

- And later you did cleanse your
soul.

- Yes.

And if I did it, you can do it.
