Well, I can't believe
we're already into series six

and this year, we're travelling
to the central Cyclades,

the most popular islands in Greece.

And if we're lucky,
we'll see some of these beasts

that have been hibernating
for the winter.

These guys, they can't get
into the nooks and crannies

that we can get to.

So, Mia Zoi is gonna take us
right into those lovely islands.

And we'll see the famous one,

Mykonos, but also the tiny
ones that you know nothing about.

I'm really looking forward to this.

I'm about to jump out of my skin!

We start this episode on Antiparos,

the smaller,
quieter neighbour of Paros.

From there, I head to an uninhabited
neighbouring island

to visit one of the most important
ancient sanctuaries in the Cyclades.

But most of this episode

is dedicated
to an island in the north,

meeting the people and learning
about what makes Mykonos

arguably the most popular
and well-known island in Greece.

I've been enjoying several days

exploring the islands of Paros
and now Antiparos,

which is only
a short ferry ride away,

but it really is
completely different

to its more famed big sister.

It's a place where things move
at a much slower pace.

It's a modern island
that has gradually grown

and matured without overdevelopment.

The Antiparos I've been experiencing

is a destination you visit
to escape the crowds

and be anonymous,
regardless of your fame.

That's why so many of the rich
and famous come here,

not just to holiday,
but to call it their home.

And while the manmade elements
of the island are quite pretty,

the natural ones are even better.

That's another
of the attractions for tourists,

from the beaches and hinterland

to the underwater
and even underground.

Plus, as you're about to see,
you don't have to stay

in expensive accommodation
to enjoy your time here.

There are options for every budget,
including amazing camping

that's been drawing people
for decades.

I don't think I've seen

a camping ground like
this in Greece before.

The facilities are fantastic,

but it's
because of their experience.

They've been here since 1978,

and they've actually had
people coming here year after year.

Since 1978, they've had people,
lots of them,

getting married here
as a result of meeting each other.

Wow.

Every May,
their doors open to visitors,

offering a variety of
low-cost accommodation

from camping to caravans.

They've created a space

where you can come as
a solo traveller,

family, or group of friends,
and either find a bit of privacy

or create
your own temporary community.

There's a great cafeteria on site,
too, serving fresh meals

that use local ingredients.

So, you've got everything
within arm's reach,

meaning you can basically come here,
set up your tent,

or park your caravan
and then never leave the place.

This camping compound sits
on 15,000sq.m of coastal land.

There's a beach behind me.

And this family's been offered
all sorts of money to sell it.

They won't sell it.

It's in the second generation
at the moment,

and Theo plans on
passing it to the third

because they believe they're doing
a service for Antiparos

and for the young people
that come here.

80% of the people that come here
are under 25.

The others are all return

people that have been coming here
for 10 and 20 years.

I mean, it's a wonderful place.

There should be
more places like this.

For the young and carefree,

this is a place where you can spend
the summer months

living like the hippies of the '60s.

You can while away your weeks
baking on the beach,

relaxing in the shaded camping area,

and meeting like-minded travellers
to share the experience with.

Young Niko here has the right idea.

He's taking the time
to find himself and see Greece

before being swallowed up
by the pressures of society

that erode away
the untroubled minds of youth.

You can see why over the decades,

so many artists, poets,
writers, and musicians

have been attracted
to the quiet Greek islands.

They're a place where you can find
inspiration in your surrounds

and have few distractions

that take your mind away
from pursuing your passion.

I, too, was inspired
by the surrounds,

but I wasn't about to pick up
a guitar or paintbrush.

My motivation was to head
to the nearest public beach

for a swim.

Across the island,
there are a number of beaches,

some more developed than others,
like here at Soros Beach.

And despite there being
plenty of space,

my less than graceful entry
managed to splash a few tourists.

In most places,
I'd probably have been told off,

but here, everyone is just that
little bit more relaxed,

and I quickly made
a few new friends.

Every morning,

ferry-loads of people come across
from Paros on day trips.

Some like it so much, they end up
spending a few nights here.

It's a quick and inexpensive trip,
costing just 2 Euros.

If you have kids,

this is the perfect way
to keep them entertained,

and what child
doesn't love a boat ride?

Tassos, how long does it take
to get from Paros to Antiparos

in the ferry?

Total time? About eight minutes.

Eight minutes. (LAUGHS)
Eight minutes, yes.

And it's the only way to get there,
otherwise there's no bridge,

there's no airport.

This is it, isn't it?
No, no, no. No.

And this is the lifeline
for Antiparos, isn't it?

Yes.

Yes, all the year.

In the winter,
we have about every one hour.

Every one hour?

Yes, in the morning
and every two hours

in the afternoon after until,
11:00, 12:00.

And summer, in the morning,
we have every 20 minutes,

afternoon every half an hour

and until 3:00, 2:30 in the night.

And it's always on time?

Always.
Always on time?

Just one, two minutes delayed,
that's it, nothing.

What if it's rough out there,
if there's rough water?

In the winter, sometimes
we stop after 9:00 before...

Right, right.

..when the weather
is after 9:00 before.

But it usually,

it happens about three,
four times per year, I think.

Right, right.

And that's not too bad,
that's not too bad.

Now, this is quick.
It doesn't take long.

Eight minutes and you're there.
Yeah. Yeah.

We're arriving in one minute now.

It's got to be one of
the shortest ferry trips in Greece.

No.
Yeah?

There's another one
also in Paros, Galatas

it's one, it's the half.

Half? It's four minutes?
Yeah.

(LAUGHS)
But it's needed.

I mean...

In Greece, we have many, many...

Short trip ferries.
Yes, yes.

Yeah, yeah.

There are small inter-island
ferry services

like this right across Greece,
unlike the massive vessels

you find taking hundreds of people
on longer hauls.

They're essential for servicing
small island populations.

Daily deliveries and common services
wouldn't exist without them.

They're like being the sole road
that connects these

remote communities
to the outside world.

These little guys are the lifeblood
of many Greek islands.

Greece is famed
for its sun-drenched

beaches
and seaside tavernas.

I can
totally understand

why people can spend
an entire holiday

relaxing on the sand

and eating
the amazing food,

totally oblivious
to what incredible things

might lie just across the way.

But as I often say,
do a bit of research

and you'll discover
a wealth of fascinating sites

that, in my opinion,

will add new depth
to your experience.

Southwest of Antiparos

is this uninhabited island
of Despotiko.

But once when it was inhabited,
and at a time when Paros

and Naxos were at their peak
in archaic times,

this sanctuary
with some 27 buildings

that have already been discovered,
was very-very important.

See, Paros and Naxos had the power
and they wanted to challenge

the Delian League and the Athenians

that had Delos
as the centre of the Cyclades.

Unfortunately, they failed
and the Athenians won.

But what we got from this

is probably
the second-biggest sanctuary

in all of the Cyclades.

And I'm just about to meet
one of the sculptors

that actually worked
on the restoration

for the last seven or eight years
to get it to where it is now,

and it's almost finished.

But if you have a look at this,
you keep walking, there's more.

The road keeps going.

So, I'm just wondering
how much more digging

and exploration they're gonna be
doing over the next few years.

Gee, I'll tell you what,
I wouldn't mind

getting a shovel out
and giving them a hand.

They've been excavating
this site since 1997,

and in that time, so much has been
unearthed about this ancient period.

But looking at
what remains to be done,

I can't help but think
that they'll be rewriting history

for decades to come.

Fragments of pottery
and other relics they've discovered

have identified the main deity that
was worshipped here to be Apollo.

Centuries ago,
from at least the Bronze Age,

this island would've been
connected to Antiparos,

making it easily accessible
for worshippers.

But over the millennia,
the ruins gradually became buried,

and the sea level rose,
which led to this remarkable place

being lost to time.

However, bringing it back to life
are a team of archaeologists,

as well as amazing sculptors
like Lukas,

who comes from the island of Tinos,

where many of the best in his trade
are taught their craft.

This is unbelievable, Lukas.

I think, you are blessed
to have been able to work on

a sympathetic restoration
of such a beautiful temple.

It must have been
a wonderful experience.

And I mean,
you're still not finished.

No, no. We are not finished.

We have few parts yet to continue.

It's been exciting?
Have you loved this process?

Yeah, of course,
I love this process.

Of course.

Everybody that is coming here,
they say, "Wow, it's amazing."

It is amazing.

The energy of the island,
it's unbelievable.

What drives you to do this work?

Why do you love this work?

I think, the material pulled me
into it.

Yeah. You're not from Paros.

Are you from Paros?
I'm not from Paros.

I'm from Athens,
but I have a grandmother from Tinos.

From Tinos.

And that's where you learned?
Yes.

But you followed your path to Paros,
the best marble in the world.

Exactly.

So, you've just been drawn
to the marble?

Exactly.

So, these pieces
would've been on the ground here.

Yeah, buried.
Buried.

So, when they first came here,
there was nothing?

Almost nothing.

They knew that there's some walls,
something around,

but almost nothing.

Wow.

So, I wander across and I see

things like the frieze
at the top and the way...

There's a lot of ancient pieces up
there, isn't there?

Of course,
that's why we did all these things.

Yeah.

And it's been so sympathetically
restored like this,

you know, so that people could get
a understanding of the shape.

Yeah, the idea of how the build was.
Yes.

So, tell me,

what were the main difficulties
that you found

here in the restoration process?

Actually, working in the sun

without having many-many tools
that we wanted to have.

Yes.

We had to bring marble
from somewhere else.

We brought marble from Naxos.

We had...

At the beginning,
we did everything here.

After that,
the last two or three years,

we had the help of a CNC machine
that was in Athens,

so, we had to carry them
back here in Despotiko.

And...
So, the CNC machine is a 3D machine?

Yes, but we can have it
till the 80%.

Right.
We were still working here.

Yeah.

So, you'd bring it 80% here,

and then you'd finish it
off on-site?

Exactly.
So, you...

Exactly.
Wow!

Where do you go from here?

How much longer to finish this,
do you think?

I think, that we have
maybe a month or two, but not more.

So, the archaeological site,
it's almost finished.

Wow.

We have to support
the floor with the wall and...

OK.

Well, let's go and have a look at
a bit more, Lukas.

Let's go.

There are some 27 buildings here,
but they don't have the time,

resources or funds, for that matter,
to be able to restore them all.

So, they've picked
the most important,

the temple of Apollo,
to invest their energy into.

Work like this is very rare.

Of the hundreds of ancient sites
across Greece,

just a few were allocated
the money to be able to bring them

back to some semblance
of their former glory.

It's extremely complicated,
expensive, and sensitive work

that only a handful of people
are capable of carrying out.

I've been travelling through Greece
for many years,

and I don't think
I've ever seen a modern restoration

as striking as this one here
on Despotiko.

To walk through it with one

of the young sculptors responsible
for the work

is truly a privilege

and something
that I'll always remember.

A short distance away

are the busy beaches
and taverns of Antiparos.

Most of the people
sunning themselves

are probably unaware
of what lies across the water.

No longer is this a location that's
revered as a place of worship.

Today, it's a modern-day sanctuary

for those after outdoor recreation
and relaxation.

You could say
they're worshippers of the sun.

There's some tanned bodies
on this beach, man.

Saint George Beach is a favourite
of mine on the island.

Apart from a swim and sun bake,
nearby you can enjoy

a fantastic lunch
at the famous Captain Pipinos

or any one of the other
fish taverns at the ferry stop.

To tell you the truth,
it's worth spending the 2 Euros

and catching the ferry
over from Paros

just to have a meal
or afternoon beverage

in this pretty location.

This was my final stop on Antiparos.

Our weather window

meant that tomorrow we would be
upping anchor early

and making our way north

to one of the most
popular islands in Greece, Mykonos.

It's a contrast to the peace
and serenity of this little gem.

But as you'll see,
it may be known as a party island,

but Mykonos has so much more
to offer the inquisitive traveller.

(THEME MUSIC)

A long journey,
another island,

and this island
really intimidates

my circadian rhythm.

I just cannot
keep up with its pace,

and as a result,

it doesn't rank as
one of my favourites,

but it definitely ranks as
a favourite for many others.

You see, this place
is the gay capital of Greece.

It is the cosmopolitan
capital of Greece.

It is the party capital of Greece.

And it is the favourite destination
for the uber rich and wealthy.

There's Learjets coming in.

There are superyachts everywhere.

Now, it's the morning,
Paradise Beach.

And if I was back home,

this place would be
full of people exercising,

finishing their run,
and having a swim.

But not here.

This is Mykonos, and they run on
a completely different time clock.

Everybody's asleep.

I could run to the town naked
and nobody would see me.

But come here
later on this afternoon

and it'll be loud.

It's gonna be like
an outdoor nightclub

and you'll be able to hear it
for miles.

Anyway, I'm going into town.

Now, as much as I wanted to prove

my nude walk through town comment,

the director insisted

I keep my signature white shirt

and green shorts on.

It was probably for the better.

Some viewers seem
to get offended enough

just by seeing me
in my bathers at the beach.

This island is windswept
300 days of the year.

It has no water.

In fact, 100 years ago,
it was the poorest island in Greece.

And yet 100 years later,
it's the most popular.

If I gave it one word,
I would say ostentatious.

It's not one of my top ten,
to be honest with you,

but those guys I know
that come here continuously,

those wealthy guys that own
those aircraft carriers over there,

my gay mates that keep coming here
year after year after year,

they can't all be wrong.

Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know.

But it sure looks good.

On face value, Mykonos looks like
most other Cycladic islands.

There's no denying it's pretty,
but as I'll show you,

it's not just
the aesthetic of the place

that makes it
so popular amongst travellers.

Mykonos is polarising.

You either love it or you hate it.

It's Miami.

It's Monaco.

It's Ibiza.

It's like I said before,
it's ostentatious.

I've told you that
it's not one of my favourites,

yet I keep coming back here.

I've been to Mykonos
on at least ten occasions.

I think, one of the reasons
I'm drawn to it is

because I've met
some wonderful people

and have plenty of good memories
spending time with them.

Those that come from here
don't refer to themselves as Greeks,

they call themselves Mykonians.

But are they different
to other Greeks?

What I can tell you
is they're hardworking,

friendly, hospitable,
and extremely cosmopolitan.

The people of this island
are willing to try new things.

They are innovators,
fun to be around,

and forward-thinking.

A great example
is my old friend Yanni,

who is as Mykonian as you can get.

Yanni, you've been here
in Mykonos a long time.

Tell me your first impression
and when was it?

I came on the island the first time,

1973, and I wanted to go swimming.

When I reached a beach,
I found out that everybody

was nude and I had in front of me

naked people,
which was a big surprise for me.

Yeah.

I didn't understood that could go
somewhere swimming like this.

How old were you?

I was 16-years-old, only.

Wow, innocent.

Innocent.

No experience.

So, you jumped in with them?

I did.
Wow.

I did.

And that's your first experience?

This is my first experience
on the island,

and I will never forget.

I bet.

Yanni is your typical Mykonian.

If you're in town,
he will open up his home to you

and show you a side of the island
that very few see.

And when you're not looking,

he'll be doing business
on the phone,

nonstop, almost 24 hours a day.

I don't think he sleeps.

Yanni, you've had retail here for,
I don't know, over 40 years,

you're one of
the oldest retailers here.

How has Mykonos changed
in that time?

You see the changes
almost every year.

Every year you see a new
mono-brand boutique come in,

big names like Louis Vuitton, Gucci,
Hublot, as you see now.

And other big brands,
they're coming here

because they have the customers
visiting the island.

All VIPs worldwide
are visiting the island.

And is that good for the island?

Excellent.
Yep.

Excellent.

Excellent in terms of advertisement,

in terms of knowing
the island worldwide.

But the island is beautiful,
that's why people come.

It might only be
33sq. km. in size,

yet Mykonos matches

New York,
Paris, Rome,

and London for the number of
high-end fashion brands

that have stores here.

Hang on, I know that name.

Yanni, with Gucci, Louis Vuitton
and all these guys being here,

do you think it's taken away
from the culture

and tradition of the island?

No, nothing at all.

I think it's helping

because we have
the best possible customers

arriving on the island.

So, why not?
Yeah, fair enough.

Come on.
Let's go.

Let's eat, mate.
Let's go, let's go.

Let's eat.

Spending a day with Yanni

is a bit like
walking into a whirlwind.

He's such a cool guy
and a great friend.

Only problem is,
like most Mykonians,

he's just go, go, go.

Yanni, I love you,

but I can only take you
for a day or two at a time.

For your average visitor to Mykonos,

the day is spent
sunning and swimming

before a little bit
of retail therapy.

And to round things off,
there's no better way

to end proceedings than
a drink while watching the sunset,

followed by dinner at one of
the waterside restaurants.

However,
for those who like fine dining,

Mykonos has some of
the best in all of Greece.

For me, it all boils down
to the company you keep.

You can have all the luxury clothes
and expensive jewellery in the world

and eat at the best restaurants,
but it brings little joy

if at the end of the
day you're not sharing

your journey with great company.

Mind you, a stunning location
like this does help.

Mykonos
is a busy island

and attracts people
from all walks of life.

In order
to make the place

as inviting as possible

for the huge amounts
of tourists

that come here,

there's been a lot of development
over the last 20 years.

They've had to build
accommodation that caters

for not only those on a budget,
but the affluent holidaymakers

who like exclusivity and comfort.

There's been significant growth
in the luxury end of the market

and that has seen
some beautiful villas

pop up in idyllic locations
across the island.

Katerina, I've been
coming to Mykonos

for I don't know,
35 years.

And one thing I've noticed
is the amount of villas

that are being built
that are charging enormous money,

like 8,000, 10,000 Euros a day.

Do they fill them?

Thank god, so, we can make a living.

(LAUGHTER)

But they fill them.

You're obviously making
a living from it.

Yes, I am making
a living out of this.

And, yes, during summer,
we rent them for around 60, 70 days

and people, you know, Mykonos
is an international destination.

Everybody wants to visit the island
for at least five, seven days.

So, they offer privacy,
luxury service,

hotel services in the villa.

So, why not?

But when I have clients
that are families,

most of the time I show them
Mykonos through my eyes.

So, I...
You've been here how long?

20 years.
So, you know Mykonos.

Yes.
You know Mykonos.

Very well.

What is it you love about Mykonos
most as an action person?

I love
all the other sides of the island

that are hidden from publicity
and celebrities.

Yes, yes.

Like, I prefer quiet areas,
small tavernas to go.

I love Delos and Rineia.

I love these islands.

They're my favourite places.

Well, no one lives there.

Yes,
but, you know, when you visit them

for a daily trip, it's beautiful.

Yeah, yeah.
Where is the hidden treasure?

Where is the beautiful things here
that are more traditional

than the cosmopolitan side
that we all see?

There are also the classic
festivals, they like Panigiri.

Yes.

I love this kind of stuff
here on the island.

And this is what I met
actually the first year that I came,

when I was 15-years-old
with my family

and we first time visited Mykonos.

It was the first thing I saw,
like, Panigiri

and beautiful beach
and people that are so kind.

And, you know, Mykonians,
they're hardworking people,

which I really appreciate,

and they also open
their houses for everyone.

So, 20 years ago,
my first time here,

I felt this hospitality,

and this is what touched
my heart a lot.

It's not like this now.

No. Well, it is a bit.

But it...

I think, that's why Mykonos
has grown to where it is.

Because the stars come here
and you wouldn't know a star

from a wealthy shipping magnate.

They all meld into the clique.
Yes, exactly.

They're all the same.

And we treat all our guests
like here the same.

It doesn't matter who is the client,

they all get VIP services.

The premium end of town
comes with a hefty price tag.

It's not for everyone,
but there's plenty of demand for it.

With that high-end expense,
you not only get impeccable design,

loads of space,
and all the modern comforts,

but there's often great views

and occasionally
a little bit of excess.

Mykonos does have
options for everyone,

from reasonably cheap
backpacker-style rooms

to low-cost apartments
and mid-range hotels.

So, whatever your budget,

you'll be able to find
something that suits.

At the end of the day,
for the majority of us,

our lodging is mainly for sleep,

and most of the time
we're out exploring the island.

That said, who doesn't enjoy
a bit of luxury on occasion?

I mean, you do
the villa thing as a...

The real estate, yes.

The real estate thing
as a money drawing.

But you've got another passion,
haven't you, Alpha Blue?

Yes. This is my baby.

It's my calling.
It's a wonderful thing.

Explain to us what Alpha Blue is.

I finally found
my reason of being here.

Your calling?
My calling, yes.

I founded Alpha Blue,
it's an NGO organisation,

and four years ago.

We do cleanups all over Greece
and mostly we are very focused

on the education
to the next generation

because it's the last generation
that can make a difference

for the environment.

I did this because I'm in love
with the big blue.

So, whenever I dive in the water
and I see trash I collect them,

and this is
how it started everything.

Because when I was a kid
with my family,

we were picking up trash
from the sea

and then I said, "OK, I have to do
something more drastic."

So, I decided
to found this organisation

and, it's really, you know,
it makes me very happy.

So, what does Alpha Blue do?

We give seminars to schools
about ocean conservation

and shark awareness,

and we give them a diploma
for participants

and then right away we do
a bit in underwater cleanup.

The kids are in the sea
with the teachers

and us, the divers,
we are in the water.

So, whenever the kids, they see
what we remove from the water,

which is like motorbikes,
washing machines,

any kind of trash you can imagine.

We have collected so far more than
300 tonnes of trash.

Wow. In how long?
Over what period is that?

Four years.
Four years, 300 tonnes?

Yes. Yes.

And the good thing is that
whenever we go and give a seminar,

our seminar has been attended
by more than 55,000 kids

in Greece and abroad.

So, the good thing is that kids,
they create their own team,

Alpha Blue team.

So, we have so far 23 teams
all over Greece

that they keep doing cleanups
on their own, without us.

That's fantastic.
Yes.

And this is...

So, it's sustaining,
it's a sustainable thing.

Yes, exactly.

Plus, from all the plastic that
we removed from the water,

we create now trashcans
and we have put them

already in several spots in Mykonos
and other islands, as well.

Wow.

I mentioned earlier that Katerina
is a bit of an action woman.

When she's not leasing villas
or cleaning up the seafloor,

she free dives, is an underwater
target shooting world champion,

and she occasionally likes to have
a bit of a swim

amongst sharks, as well.

They're not the type
of things you'd expect

a successful Mykonian
woman to get up to.

The stereotypical image
is one of a person

that spends their days
on a deck chair,

not the deck of a boat
picking up rubbish.

You'd think those luxurious villas

are a reflection of a glamorous
lifestyle led by their owner.

But instead, Katerina chooses a life
that gives back to the world,

one that's physically demanding
and not always pretty.

She's truly an inspirational woman

and the right personality
to motivate others to replicate

what she's doing here in the Aegean.

Hopefully, a few of you watching
at home right now

might be enthused to clean up
the waters near your own home.

Be it a plastic bottle washed up
on the beach or some fishing line

tangled amongst the rocks,
every little bit counts.

This is what Mykonos
is known for,

the pretty beaches
where the tourists flock

to lay on deck chairs
and sip cocktails

throughout the day.

This is Paraga Beach.

Located at the southern
end of the island,

it's one of the most popular.

It's a constant buzz of activity
from mid-morning

to well into the night.

But like all of Greece,
come here early in the day

and you're gonna have
the place to yourself.

It always amazed me
just how many tourists

emerge from the villas and hotels
and head to these crowded beaches.

I can handle this type of busy beach
for a little while,

but I typically try to get a dip in

when most of these guys
are still asleep.

For those that are more interested
in bars and dancing

between swims and laying in the sun,
the place for you is Paradise Beach.

This is popular
for younger travellers

who have the youthful energy

to be able to drink
and dance all night,

then recover
at the beach during the day,

before putting it
all on repeat again.

It's a beach and resort area
where you'd be hard-pressed to find

many people over 40 or overweight.

I never really
did the party all night,

sleep all day thing in my youth.

I guess that made me
a bit of a geek,

but looking back on
those fond memories,

I wouldn't change a thing.

Here in the south of the island,
you'll find Psarou Beach.

It's the location of
Nammos Restaurant by the Sea,

which is a beach club
and restaurant destination

that, in my opinion,
is the pinnacle establishment

for wealthy travellers
visiting the Greek Islands.

Parked just offshore,

there's always a flotilla
of cruisers and superyachts.

To find out what makes this such
a hotspot for the rich and famous,

I grabbed a bite to eat
and a cocktail

with the fellow that runs
the whole establishment,

an Italian by the name of Fabio.

Every time I come here,

there is a fleet
of superyachts out there.

Not so much at any other beach,
but here.

What draws them here?
Is it the same thing?

Is it...

To be honest with you,
this side of the island

is the less windy side we have.

So, Psarou Beach is one of the most
beautiful beaches in Mykonos.

Obviously, the wind is helping a lot
because here they can park

and they, you know, always say,

you know, even
because Nammos is here,

you know, they're coming,
they have the boats,

they can come here,
they can have dinner, lunch,

and then go back to the yacht.

There's some music, you know.

I'll tell you, Fabio,
a difficult question,

but last time I came here

and I looked in the menu on
the last page I saw

some champagne that
was like 150,000 Euros.

People buy that, do they?
Yeah, of course.

I think, it was the less expensive
we have, by the way.

Is that right?
I think so.

But, you know,
the profile of people we have,

you know, obviously,
Mykonos Island is something unique.

The place where you
are is something unique.

So, it's, you know,
not everything about money.

I don't think they still has money,
you know, they'll spend it,

but obviously they're gonna have
a nice experience here,

an amazing experience her.

The other thing
I've noticed when I look around,

I feel out because it's all
the beautiful people,

they're all beautiful
looking people.

It's like they're dressed to go

out somewhere, not to the beach.

That's true. That's true.

People are wearing
outfits that are worth $10,000.

But you don't see
that on other beaches.

Absolutely not.

and big personalities,

I had the opportunity to meet
with a friend that fits in

perfectly with this place.

Dora is a commercial litigator
by day,

but in her free time is a radio host
in her hometown of Toronto.

She's a charismatic
and passionate person

that's seen
a whole lot of Greece over the years

and has an affinity
with the islands of the Cyclades.

Dora, you've lived
half your life in Greece

and half your life in Canada.

Where is your favourite spot
in Greece?

That's a hard one.

I find every spot
has something to give you.

I love the Cyclades.
I love the Cyclades.

There's just the energy,
the architecture,

the people, the food, the capers.

But definitely Paros and Mykonos

are two of my favourite islands
in the world.

You spend a lot of time in Paros,
don't you?

It's my favourite spot.

I tell my parents
if I ever get married,

which they hope I will,
that's where I'm getting married.

Right, fair enough.

And Mykonos, I mean, I look at here,
at where we are in the moment,

in Nammos, in Psarou,
and the uber wealthy around us.

What do you think of
the ostentatiousness of Mykonos?

It's obnoxious
and it's fun and I love it.

(LAUGHTER)

What specifically do you love?

Well, I'm loud, so, it suits
my personality all the time.

Right, right.
But I find you can do anything.

You wanna just party, party,
you can do that.

But there's so many magical spots,
spots that you would never imagine.

And Nammos is one of those.

You can see the Joe Schmo
but you can also see

the super celebrities of the world
being here in one place.

That's magical.
It doesn't happen anywhere else.

It is...it really

very different
to the rest of Greece, isn't it?

Oh, it's a category of its own.

You can't compare Mykonos
to anything else.

Mykonos is just that, Mykonos.
Yeah.

Is it somewhere that you think

you'd want your children
to come to one day?

I think so.

I would love to have a family
that I come every summer

and I get to experience Greece,
and, I mean, the hospitality,

the tavernas, the little taverns on
the water, the food...

The culture.

..the people, the culture,
the music, the sounds, everything.

I think, I feel growing up in Greece
and being able to come every summer,

you get a different
sense of the world.

Do you think you're more Greek

than Canadian or more Canadian
than Greek?

That's interesting.

When I'm in Canada,
I'm the Greek one.

When I'm in Greece,
I'm the Canadian one.

Wow.

So, it's that dichotomy,
which is very interesting.

And I always say,
"Well, you know what?

"I have the best of both worlds."

So, your show,
what do you talk about

and what do you do on your show?

Well, it's a talk show.
I like to talk.

I'm a chatterbox.

That's why I became a lawyer, too.

So, it's a community.

We talk about the world,
what's going on,

and current affairs.

We do a lot of fundraiser.

And at the end of the day,
we give a voice.

We give a voice
to people who otherwise

would never have one,

and that's the gap
that we're filling.

That's awesome.

I mean,
you're a construction lawyer,

you've got your radio show
for the community,

you're doing a lot of good things.

Beach clubs like Nammos
offer more than just good dining,

a wonderful atmosphere,
and pristine Aegean water.

There's also a shopping village,
as well as great live music.

Occasionally, they have some of
the best musicians in Greece

perform here, on the beach.

I had a great day,
but in typical Mykonian style,

I just had to end it with a bang.

To break things up a little
and get some respite

from the action of Mykonos,

we took the tender
and made the five-minute journey

across to the uninhabited
island of Rineia.

Now, I wasn't here purely
to escape the crowds.

During my early morning reading,
I came across some information

about the amazing ruins here.

So, naturally,
my inquisitive mind started spinning

and the plans for the day were set
so, I could do a little exploring.

As soon as I saw the stunning beach,
I knew I'd made the right choice.

Check out how clear the water is.

We're on the island of Rineia,
just a stone's throw for Mykonos,

and it's only inhabited by
the animals that come from Mykonos

in the summer
so, they don't disturb the tourists.

But we're not here for that,
although the beaches

are absolutely awesome.

You wouldn't hear about
this as a top ten beach,

but I'll tell you what,
it's up there.

We're going up there.

In ancient times, Rineia was home
to the necropolis of Delos

and covered in sculptures,
burial structures,

and buildings
of religious significance.

However, part way
through the Peloponnesian War

of the 5th century BC
the Athenians purified Delos

and removed all the tombs
and religious buildings.

In more recent times,
during the 19th and 20th century,

it was used as a quarantine site.

Today, much of Rineia
has been divided into lots

that are leased back to farmers
for livestock and cropping.

Looking at the arid landscape,
it's hard to imagine

that farming would be
hugely successful.

But across the terraced hills
with their dusty,

dry paddocks
and crumbling stone walls

are lots of relics
from when the island was thriving.

In amongst these farmlets that seem

abandoned but they aren't,
you find all sorts of pot shards.

Look at that, you can see
the handle of the pot,

abandoned columns.

And just in front of me here,
here is the sanctuary of Hercules.

Can you believe it?
Look at the beach behind it.

You could be swimming on that beach
and not know

that there's a building built
2,500 years ago.

Wow. Have a look at that.

Careful not to step inside it.

This building was discovered

at the turn of last century,
the 20th century.

Now, have a look at this.

There's three or four dolphins
in there,

but they don't look like dolphins.

They look like something that
probably is extinct.

You can see there's a couple of
wings at the back.

There's this brown thing on the top,

which looks like
it's hanging off the head.

Wow.

I mean, this is just impressive
to be here looking at this,

millennia later.

I just...

I don't know,
I'm just dumbfounded what to say.

Yeah, my last bottle of water.
Look at that.

Look at this.

I mean, it's just sitting here
and very few people know about it.

It's just amazing.

I'm careful not to walk in there
because I don't wanna desecrate

it in any way.

The water's starting to run out
through this hole

so, this was obviously a very...

exceptionally built
and coloured wine press.

They'd be sitting there or standing
in there crushing the grapes

and the wine would come through
this little hole here.

You can see
the water coming out now.

And this beautiful plinth here,
this marble plinth,

is still in excellent condition.

Wow.

Wow, it's impressive.

There's a plinth here,

and the statue of Hercules
was standing on that.

You can actually see that,

apparently,
in the museum in Mykonos.

Further over,
there's some more mosaics

and there's a well
that there's an old fig tree

still growing in there.

It's actually fruiting.

Wow, that's deep.

Hang on a second.

There is a fig.

Plenty of them on there
but I'm not gonna test it.

Anyway, I'm off.

It's hard to believe that
2,000 years ago,

they were pressing grapes here
and where now

there are crumbling ruins
dotted about a barren landscape,

back then,
it would likely have been green

and fertile, covered in vines
and olive trees

with glowing, white marble statues,
ornate tombs,

and other structures dedicated
to the gods.

I'm exploring a side of Mykonos

that your average traveller
doesn't see,

from the mines
that brought the island

so much wealth to the hidden stories
of local life

that help to retain
the island's culture.
