We've spent a mountain
of money this year.

We have a lot more to spend.

We don't have a lot left.

[narrator] Parker Schnabel's
thirst for big gold

is pushing him dangerously
close to going bust.

So right now,
we're stripping at Dominion.

Tyson sluicing down
the Ken and Stuart's.

We've never been that
spread out before.

[narrator] Parker's fighting
a war on two fronts.

At Dominion Creek,
his crew are still stripping

the 40-acre Money Pit cut,

spending hundreds of thousands
of dollars a week.

To pay the bills,
Parker has a second crew

sluicing Ken and Stuart's
El Dorado cut

and needs it
to deliver 300 ounces

by the end of the week.

Now, Parker's about to stretch
his resources even further

and open up a third cut
he leased

before buying Dominion.

We went to go up to
Australia Creek this spring,

but the drilling maps
were all, kind of, screwed up.

And I think we know
what we're doing now,

and it's a pretty
rich-looking piece of ground.

[narrator]
From Dominion Creek,

4 miles south
sits Australia Creek.

Its 8,500 acres
of virgin ground

was skipped over
by the old-timers.

Early drill results revealed
the depth of the overburden

is a third less than Dominion,

suggesting it should be easier

to reach the gold ridge
pay layer.

[Parker]
Before we bought Dominion,
we were really desperate,

so I, kind of,
had to just say yes.

To mine Australia Creek
this year,

it's probably one of the
higher risk things we've done.

When we have
this huge commitment,

nearly half a million dollars
already tied up

in, like,
payments for drilling

and payments for access

and just us
getting the ground.

And we can't afford ground

that doesn't at least
pay for itself.

But really, it needs
to make a lot of money.

We've got a lot on our plate,

but, uh, typical
Parker fashion here,

we're gonna add
a little bit more to it.

Right now, we're on our way
over to Australia Creek.

Parker's behind me
with the loader.

We're gonna take the D6

and the 250 loader out
and just see what we can do.

You've gotta be [bleep]

Do you think the truck
was hooked to it

when they made
the big jump over there?

has washed away
the makeshift bridge,

an old lowboy trailer
blocking access to the ground

on the other side
of the creek.

[Mitch] A lot of water flowing
through there,

and we're probably
looking at the best spot

to try and cross this.

There's nothing upstream
or downstream

that's any more promising.

Not that puts us into a spot

where we can do anything
on the other side.

Do you think we're gonna have
enough time to do this project

with the other ones going on
and get everything

to where we need to be by
the time the snow's falling?

[Parker] That's the problem.

To walk away from this
would be very expensive.

Like, I already paid a hundred
ounces in royalties,

plus a few other payments for
a bunch of drilling and stuff.

Rock and a hard place.

Just with everything else
going on at Dominion?

[Parker] There's so much
to do, Mitch.

[Mitch] I know.

Stressing me out.

[Mitch] It's just gonna
be tough on our timeline.

How much is this gonna
cost you if you walk away

versus how much
is it gonna cost us

if we don't get
everything done

that we need to get done
over at Dominion?

And that's the problem

I've got is it's just neither
option seems...

Feels particularly good.

The big advantage we've got
with it is it's quite shallow.

Like, the deepest of it
is 15 feet, some of it's 10.

You're not gonna spend
much money stripping.

I think we, kind of,
have to do it.

to bring a hoe in here,

put some gravel on this ramp,

because it's gonna

in waste gravel

to build a ramp down the bank.

He'll then take his 750
excavator across the creek,

hook it up
to the stricken lowboy,

clearing the path
to the other side,

allowing all the heavy iron

to cross and start mining
the virgin ground.

I don't know.

It's gonna
be pretty interesting.

is going out

and Parker is spending it
like he never has before.

hard to stomach.

once you get that

This is where the road stops
and Parker's ground starts.

And now the real work begins.

We've gotta open up a cut.

We've got a sluice it,
and on top of that

we got two other mining
operations going on,

so a lotta work to do.

We're already almost halfway
through the season,

not a whole lot of time
left for it all.

Hopefully there's a lot
of gold in the ground

because we had to work
to get here.

[Rick] Right now,
we're in full throttle.

We've got a thousand ounces,
you know, to get this year.

And at the current rate,

I don't think
we're gonna get there.

in the mountains above Keno,

is behind the eight ball.

Over a third of the way
through the season,

he's brought in
just over a tenth

of his thousand-ounce
season gold.

[Rick] We need to up
our gold tanks

at least 60 ounces a week,

uh, for the rest
of this season

if we're gonna hit
a thousand ounces.

As of right now,
we're mining the Bacon Strip.

It's not really paying out
like I wanted to.

We're doing everything
we can right now,

but by the end of this week,
we need to up our production.

[narrator] Last week,

Rick's first big call
of the season

was to sluice
the 1.4-acre Bacon cut,

but got a disappointed
11 ounces of gold.

This week, he needs 60 ounces

or he will be forced
to find richer ground.

at the plants on the ground.

the whole thing.

Um, we can't repair that.

We gotta find a new pulley.

Power will likely be down
for a several days,

unless he can get the plant
up and running and again.

is shut down with a worn-out
pulley wheel.

the boneyard here

will take days to arrive.

Every hour down,
Rick's hope of a comeback

slips further away.

I got two conveyors
sitting right here
and I'm not using them.

I know that those run electric
motors, uh, just like that.

But I don't know if whether
or not they're the same size

or share the same
shaft size or nothing.

It'd be pretty easy for me
to find out right now.

These are actually conveyors
for Monster Red
that I don't use.

So, they're sitting here
with good donor parts on 'em.

Yeah, that's not, but this is.

That's the right [bleep] size.

So this pulley would fit
on the shaft that we need,

um, on the electric motor
at Rocky.

But the diameter of the pulley
is too big, it may not work,

but we're definitely
gonna try.

This is better than
to sitting on our asses,

waiting for a new one to come
from the [bleep] store.

Now, we're just gonna see
if she fits on the, uh...

Fits on the shaft on Rocky.

I mean, there's quite a bit
of size difference there.

With that bigger pulley,

we might be able to go
from 120 yards an hour to 140.

We got thousand ounces to get,

wheel drives the belt

that makes the washplant
shaker deck vibrate

to separate gold
from the dirt.

Instead of finding one
that's the same size,

Rick gambles
on replacing the pulley

with one twice the size.

It could speed up the rate
the dirt is processing,

potentially bringing
in 20% more gold.

[Rick] We'll just
have to judge.

We are trying to get

Parker's crew are opening up
a new 11-acre cut.

We're just getting off
the top gravel

just a little bit more until
we're down to good pay.

operation of Parker's
ever expanding empire.

We'll be mining three
different areas,

but so far everybody
is in good spirits,
which is good.

[Parker] Everybody
is pretty busy.

Tyson is down
at Ken and Stuart's.

The stripping crew
is out moving mud

in Australia Creek.

Here on Dominion, there's
a mountain of things to do

and not enough people
to do them.

And it's just a general state
of disarray.

[narrator] 4 miles away,

at Dominion Creek's Money Pit,

Parker's crew
has spent eight weeks

stripping 36 acres
of deep overburden.

Parker needs the final
four acres down to pay

by the end of the week
so he can finally get gold

coming in at Dominion.

We have a really good crew.

It's just like when you start
getting that as spread out

as we are with three projects,
it's, uh...

You can never
have enough people.

So today, we're getting rid
of these piles of overburden.

[narrator]
In the 480 excavator,

veteran operator Damien Brown

clears the worthless
overburden.

So, we have two trucks
here with us.

We have Jacob,
he's here last season as well.

And his friend, Connor.

He only started
a couple of days ago.

Two trucks
isn't nearly enough.

We could do with another
two here for me to keep up.

barely scraping by.

I'm making no money.

You know, if I make no money,

then, you know, I can't live,
I can't do anything.

I can't pay for school.

So, you basically have to make
decisions like this.

You know, keep going to
school or go and work.

[narrator] To hit
Parker's deadline,

the stripping crew
need to shift

7,000 tons of dirt every day.

Enough to fill three
Olympic-sized swimming pools.

on the front of the engine.

If it's not,
that means it's something,

uh, deeper in it,
which is not a good thing

because that
won't be a quick fix.

And now, we're down to one.

of trucks

now stretched
across three sites,

Mitch has no choice

but to turn
to Dominion's auction yard.

This is where all
the equipment came

that we're like, "Yeah, we
don't wanna own that stuff."

But now,
we've got so many trucks down

that here we are,
looking at these, uh,

two magnificent pieces
of history here.

[narrator] When Parker
bought the mine,

it came with a ton
of old beat-up excavators
and rock trucks.

[Mitch] We never intended
on running any of this gear.

And now, here we are,
gonna go out there
and try and run it.

[engine starts]

Oh, yeah.

That's not bad for sitting
as long as this thing
has been.

Oh [bleep].

[Mitch] Hopefully, that truck
could give us some time here,

let us catch up
on these other machines.

It's put in a lot of hours.

Hopefully, it's got
a few more left in it.

Well, we finally got
a second rock truck again.

It's pretty beat-up,
to say the least.

And I'm pretty sure
they pulled the "do not use,

do not operate"
sticker off of it.

The lock on the, uh,
bed doesn't wanna stick.

Connor's replacement truck

has lasted less than an hour.

It's screaming at me,

You know, once you got
one truck break down on ya,

you certainly
don't want any more,

These trucks are old.
They got a lot of hours
and we're pushing 'em hard.

They're gonna break.

Trucks that were
in the auction yard

that we weren't gonna run,

and we're down
to them resources now.

to be down to pay

by the end of the week
at Dominion Creek.

It's obviously
the weakest link

in the chain
that's gonna break.

one working rock truck

removing overburden
out of the cut.

It looks like we've
probably dropped a valve.

It's a big job.
You don't do this

out in the yard.

In a nice clean shop.

Mechanic Taylor Matejka

is trying to revive
Connor's first truck

with a blown engine.

We fortunately have
another truck,

like an A40E, just like this.

It's in pieces

and the engine's
still good on it,

so to me, the thing
that makes sense

is we just pull
this engine out

and throw that one in it.

[narrator] Taylor will replace
the blown engine

from the 40-ton rock truck

with another
from a truck used for spares.

First, the broken
470-horsepower engine

will be detached and craned

out of its tight housing.

Then the new
two-ton replacement

must be swung in and fitted

into the engine bay.

If Taylor doesn't damage
the housing or hoses,

he can reconnect
the transplant engine

and fire it up.

[truck engine revving]

[Taylor] How we
looking there, Janko?

[Tyler] Just need
some lifting power.

[Taylor] Lifting power?

Coming right at ya.

[narrator] Helping Taylor
with the transplant,

So Taylor's just
gonna get his crane

all rigged up

and we'll pick this engine out

and we'll set
her down right over there.

Broken engine removed...

to carefully install

the replacement.

[Tyler] This is technically
the biggest engine

that you should
work on, right?

It's 16-liter.

[narrator] The turbocharged
two-ton engine

is worth over $50,000.

Quite a bit of weight.

Uh, we don't really
wanna play around with it

too much while
it's dangling in the air.

-[Tyler] Yeah.

[Tyler] Okay. Hold it.

We're getting
pretty tight now.

Obviously, it's engineered
to fit

in quite a tight space.

There's lots of things
that can get in the way,

hoses or electrical harnesses.

Stuff that could
be easily damaged

by the weight of the engine,

so you wanna just do it

very incrementally
till you can get it in

nice and smooth.

Going slow
is your friend here.

So we're just finishing up

installing all the parts
and pieces on this truck.

Uh, it'll be nice to get
this one all finished up

and back to Mitch,

so he can stop bugging us

on getting this truck back.

eight hours,

the engine is safely
in its new housing.

So we got this engine in,
so I can start, uh,

putting it all
back together and...

ready,

that truck
heading back out here

because we got a lot
of dirt to move.

We are just
running pay through Rocky.

That thing is just
a good ol' washplant.

Rocky's just as simple
as it gets, you know?

Rick's crew is chasing
a 60-ounce weekly goal.

We are a pretty well-oiled
machine going right now.

Everybody's got a task

and everything's going exactly
how it's supposed to be going.

Right now, we're really
working Rocky really hard.

The shaker deck
is going a lot quicker.

Things are a bit
noisier right now.

[narrator] A new,
larger pulley wheel

is driving the shaker deck
faster than ever,

allowing operator Trey Charlie

to up the feed rate

to 140 yards an hour.

The spare pulley that we found

is definitely just a bit
bigger than the old one,

which is making this thing
shake like crazy,

a lot faster than normal,

but, you know, we got
to be sluicing and, um,

we got to have
money coming in.

If not, we're... We'll be...

We'll just keep
throwing money out.

[machine whirring]

On the other side
of the shaker deck,

you can see smoke coming out
of the outside of the walls.

It's overheating for sure.

[narrator] The replacement
pulley wheel

has forced
the shaker deck motor

to overrev and overheat,

shutting down
Rick's operation once again.

on a larger pulley wheel

has caused the shaker deck's
engine to overheat,

bringing Rocky
to a standstill.

We've been having solid
sluice times all year.

Plants have been running.

But this is a big deal,
you know what I mean?

A lot of it is a gamble,

but yeah, that didn't work.

[Buzz speaking]

[narrator] While the plant
is down,

Rick pulls the mats
for a cleanup.

I mean, right now, I wanna
know how much gold's in there,

but really,
in the back of my mind,

I can't stop thinking
about the plant

because the moment we're done
with this cleanup,
we can't start...

We can't fire back up.

And the pressure is on Mitch

to strip Australia Creek's
virgin ground
down to pay dirt.

Parker wants this done

and he wants it
done this season.

This time of the year
to be opening ground
and moving mud,

uh, there's nothing good
or smart about it.

This is gonna be difficult
the whole way through.

[narrator] The shallow
pay layer is covered

but it's late in the season

Hot temperatures are turning

into a swampy mess.

You know, it's really cool
to be someplace totally new,

but it's also very stressful.

I've been really busy,
