Pel Forever
NARRATOR: The most famous man in the world is the Brazilian Pel.
(CROWD CHEERING)
A superstar courted by kings and queens,
nobles and commoners,
Pel is the celebrity
who knew better than anyone how to handle fame.
He was born for glory.
Pel is the greatest footballer ever,
the embodiment of the most popular sport in the world.
When bidding farewell to the national team,
LONG LIVE THE KING
150,OOO passionate fans,
rather than saying goodbye, cried out with a single voice...
CROWD: (CHANTING) Stay! Stay!
And Pel stayed forever,
immortalised in their memories.
Pel: l'm very happy because l managed to gather my entire family
to participate in the film about my life.
I was only able to accomplish everything you're about to see
with the strong support of my family,
especially my father's encouragement and my mother's understanding.
My family was always fundamental
to my ability to accomplish everything l always dreamt of.
l thank God for all of this
and l want to share this great joy with you.
(FAMILY APPLAUDING)
CELESTE: l was born in Trs Coraes.
My father worked for a lumber company and had a horse-drawn cart.
We were nine brothers and sisters, six girls and three boys.
When l was 14, I used to go out with my girlfriends.
l met Dondinho on one of these outings.
Dondinho was in the army.
We started going out and a year later we were married.
l was 15 years old.
When l was 16, l was pregnant with my first child.
-lt was a normal pregnancy. -Was it really normal, Mum?
There were little inconveniences sometimes, you know?
A head butt, kicks in the belly...
l thought to myself, ''There's going to be a footballer around here.''
Mum, what did the midwife say when Dico was born?
She told me to be very careful with this child,
that he was going to be a special child who would make me very proud.
NARRATOR: Celeste and Dondinho's son
was born on October 23, 1940, in Trs Coraes.
His father admired Thomas Edison, inventor of the electric bulb.
That's where Edson came from, Edson Arantes do Nascimento.
He grew up watching his father play football.
Dondinho was centre forward for Trs Coraes Athletic Club,
Atltico Mineiro, So Loureno's Vasco da Gama,
and Itaiub's Yuracan.
ln a match against Yuracan...
Dondinho scored five headed goals.
Victor Cunha formerly 3 Coraces Athletic Club
Five headed goals in just one game!
His son never did that.
Dondinho Pel's Father
l even missed some.
-He doesn't have it on tape, does he? -No.
NARRATOR: In 1945, Dondinho joined Bauru Athletic Club
and brought the whole family with him.
He was a champion with BAC, where he played for 8 years.
His career came to an end due to a knee injury.
Dondinho was a good football player, but his greatest feat
was giving the gift of football to Pel.
Antnio Yafushi friend from Bauru
l met him when he was 3 years old, when he arrived from Minas.
He was only this high, but really loved the ball!
Pel didn't do anything else. He had the ball with him day and night.
He scored in his sleep, dreaming about football.
Edir Alves former Baquinho player
You could invite him to play anytime. He would always go.
Jorge Arantes Pel's Uncle

When he made saves, they would say, ''Get it, Bil!''
The kids didn't understand very well and started saying ''Pel''.
lt was Pel, Pel, Pel.
NARRATOR: The first uniform Pel wore
was From a street team called September 7.
He also played for Canto do Rio, So Paulinho de Curua,
and for Ameriquinha, where he wore his first football boots.
RADlO ANNOUNCER: The Brazilian team enters the pitch!
NARRATOR: When he wasn't playing,
he was listening to football on the radio.
On the radio he listened, together with his father,
to Uruguay's defeat of Brazil in 1950 at Maracan stadium.
lV FIFA WORLD CUP JULES RIMET TROPHY
lt was a national tragedy that had the whole country in tears.
PEL: l remember it as if it were yesterday.
l saw my father with tears in his eyes.
l was worried because in those days,
my father was always saying that men didn't cry,
they had to be strong.
And l saw my father crying, completely defeated.
lt seemed like he had just finished the game,
like he himself was on the pitch and had lost the game.
All l could say was that he didn't need to cry
because l was going to win a World Cup for him.
TRAGEDY oN MARACAN PITcH

and Tim, Bangu's coach at the time, wanted to take him to Rio.
l didn't let him because l didn't want him to go to Rio
or any big city.
So he was invited to play for Noroeste in Bauru.
Waldemar got mad
because he was worried that team would weaken his skills,
and he thought it was better
to go to Santos Football Club than to stay with Noroeste in Bauru.
But l didn't want him to go anywhere or be a football player.
So they stayed all night trying to convince you to let him go to Santos.
Thank God, Celestinha!

lt was a friendly match against Corinthians from Santo Andr.
l was on the bench for the first half.
ln the second half, l replaced Del Vecchio,
and l soon scored my first goal wearing the Santos jersey.
And the goalkeeper from Santo Andr made a business card later that said,

NARRATOR: Pel has always been a winner on the pitch.
Off it, not so much.
As a businessman, he sometimes met with failure.
PEL: t first, thinking about the future,
l invested money in real estate
and had a partnership with Zito and Pepe, our left winger.
We built small buildings.
Then we bought a building supply store,
the Sanitria Santista.
But since we travelled a lot, we had a partner, Pepe Gordo,
who looked after the business.
Perhaps due to his lack of experience, he didn't do well.
Afterward, Zito and l invested in a latex firm called fiolax,
which didn't work out either.
So l can't consider myself a good businessman,
because l always trusted people, l always believed in them,
and they say a businessman can't be like that.
(CHURCH BELLS RINGING)
NARRATOR: Lucky in football, lucky in love.
Pel had many girlfriends all over the world,

The marriage lasted 12 years, and they separated in 1978.
After that, Pel was once again collecting admirers.
He spends 16 years living the good life,
collecting titles and hearts with the same passion.
But all pleasures have their price...
ln 1990, Pel spontaneously recognises
the paternity of flvia Kurtz.
ln 1996, Pel legally recognises
the paternity of Sandra Regina Machado.
ln 1993, Pel is reunited with an old flame,
psychologist Assiria Seixas Lemos, mother of Gemima.
ln April 1994, they get married in Recife

LONDON 1966
The 1966 World Cup in England comes around.
Brazil has the opportunity to capture the Jules Rimet Trophy forever,
every Brazilian's dream, and Pel's dream as well.
He arrives in London
with the intention of reasserting his reign over the European continent,
but Europe now wants to depose him and crown a new king.
Brazil's first opponent is Bulgaria, known for their physical football.
They know that the beast to slay is Pel
and they foul him many times.
ANNOUNCER: He's taken down again...
(CROWD CHEERING)

ln the third match,
the coach feola replaces eight players on the Brazilian team
and puts Pel back on the pitch.
But his knee is not entirely healed,
(CROWD BOOlNG)
and that is precisely what the Portuguese team targets.
What follows is a hunt unprecedented in the World Cup.
Pel was hunted down in all of the national team matches.
Edu former Santos player
The Portuguese team was determined to hunt Pel on the pitch.
They tackled him hard three times in a row.
lt was the most violent World Cup match l've ever seen.
Rattin former player
NARRATOR: Pel falls victim to the brutality
of three Portuguese defenders who crossed the line.
(DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING)
The scene of a famous exit repeats itself.
Barely able to walk, Pel goes back on the pitch
iust to make up the numbers.
Brazil was losing 2-O.
Even weaker, Brazil concedes the third goal
and loses the match 3-1.
Brazil is disqualified.
(REFEREE BLOWS WHISTLE)
Pel's dream is destroyed.
lt's his farewell to the competition.
Pel loses the World Cup For the First time.
Pel, rumour has it you don't want to go to the World Cup any more.
That's right. l don't intend to go
as l wasn't very lucky in the last two l played in.
So it's better l don't try.
Things can change in four years, of course,
but l prefer not to play in World Cups any more.
l suffered a lot in those days.
lt could be a serious iniury that prevented him from playing,
like what happened to his father,
who iniured his knee and couldn't play any more.
So l was really worried about him.
NARRATOR: nd in fact, Celeste had every reason to worry.
Armando Tavares former referee
Every athlete of his calibre suffers a great deal of harassment.
They really went after him. They were tough on him.
Washington Olivetto advertising executive
Considering how much better he was, they weren't that hard on him.
No, they hit him hard. Come on!
(PLAYFUL MUSIC PLAYING)
NARRATOR: Pel was the player who experienced
the heaviest persecution given exclusively to a single player.
He just couldn't be contained by a single player, no matter how good.
lt was absurd. Some players followed me wherever l went,
because their coach told them to.
Sometimes l would go to the side to tie my shoes and he'd be there.
Sometimes l ioked with some of them that they would breathe down my neck.
l said, ''Stop breathing on my neck! You're giving me goose bumps.''
NARRATOR: Pel always played with his head up, looking ahead of him.
His ''lynx eyes'' give him a more accurate peripheral view
that senses the attacks coming.
The hunt can begin at any moment,
you only need the ball to roll between him and his adversaries.
Never before had a player felt
the fury of his opponents to such an extent.
The parade of brutality seems endless
and inspires many descriptions.
Pel is hunted down...
Pel is taken down...
Pel is run over...
Pel is run into...
Pel is pushed...
Pel is bumped into...
Pel is thrown over...
Pel is kicked...
Pel is lifted off the ground!
Praised be Pel!
But Pel didn't run from a fight.
Tosto former player
He did pay them back.
He knew he could be hit, so he learnt to hit back.
lf he was kicked, he kicked back.
lf it came to that, he would hit, too.
When he hit, he did it well.
He who hits forgets, but he who is hit doesn't.
(SWING MUSIC PLAYING)
NEW YORK
NARRATOR: The Americans wanted to introduce Football to the United States,
and this depended on the support
of the Latin American and European communities
who were passionate about their countries' teams.
One month after the 1966 World Cup,
we went to play New York's quadrangular tournament,
together with two European champions,
Benfica and Internazionale from Milan.

SANTOS WINS CHILE'S 8-TEAM TOURNAMENT
Winning other important international tournaments,
Santos added even more to their enviable trophy case.
ln order to keep its great stars, Santos FC had to travel and play a lot.
lt was the team that played the most in the world.
January and february in the Americas, and July and August in Europe.
NARRATOR: The price for Santos to play abroad
was quite high, as long as Pel was playing.
Without him, the price fell by half.
He began to be paid by the match, 10,OOO dollars, l think.
And a bonus of 100 dollars.
So he got $10,100 and we got only $100.
What a guy!
And he would ask me to help count the money. Can you believe that?
NARRATOR: for Pel, the most important thing wasn't money,
it was his performance.
The King turned any match into a great spectacle.
He was art in motion on the pitch.
He mesmerised everyone with the excellence of his play.
That's why his fans always wanted a piece of his strip as a souvenir.
He had to run from the fans at the end of the match
so he would have jersey number 10 for the following matches.
No Game Without Pel
Pel's wandering round the world's football pitches
has its share of interesting incidents.
Some incidents evolved into legends,
while some legendary incidents were true.
ln the mythology created around Pel,
it's difficult to separate myth from reality.

ln a match against the Colombian University team,

And Pel came back to play.
Chavez former referee
Pel wasn't sent off. Or he was, but was readmitted.
(SIRENS WAILING)
People aren't stupid.
NARRATOR: Pel's adventures took him to Africa.
Santos was scheduled to play against the Congolese team
in the city of Brazzaville,
which was at war with the neighbouring city of Kinshasa.
People were armed and everything...
-Lots of machine guns! -Crazy, isn't it?
l said, ''l can't believe we're going to play here.''
Manoel Maria former Santos player
One of the country's leaders said, ''We're having a match against Santos.''
''lf you play in one country, you have to play in both, or the war goes on.''
So we got authorisation from both governments.
-The war stopped. -On one condition.
We had to play in the other city as well.
Clodoaldo former Santos player
The posters said, ''A moment of peace to see the King play.''
So there was a truce, white flags on both sides.
''Let's watch football, we'll fight later.''
MAN: (SINGING) My heart from the forest screamed Pel!
NARRATOR: Pel's presence was what it took

The African war resumes.
Pel is fighting a different war,
that oF the artist in search of perfection.
After training, l would stay to practise headers, kicks, straight shots.
l was always very disciplined with physical and skills training.
(UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING)
NARRATOR: The pitch is a stage where a diverse repertoire of moves,
rolls and fakes is shown For the First time.
An art of the body,
where movements become more important
than the touch on the ball itseIF.
lt's football as an extraordinary ballet performed by a genius.
Pel had all the techniques we wanted to see in a player.
Pel was a player with a lot of energy and good health.
He had it!
l've never seen such powerful sprinting.
A superior physical power. A panther.
His eyes seemed to jump out.
lt was impressive, scary!
Didi former player
Every match was a beautiful thing to watch.
Julio Botelho former player
What he did on the pitch was extraordinary!
-A fine dancer. -He was a fast thinker.
He was about to do one play and did another instead.
He was diabolical.
The ball stopped on his chest!
lt seemed like he had a shock absorber in his chest.
He seemed to swallow the ball.
Nobody treated the ball better than Pel.
The ball loved Pel!
You were jumping with him,
thinking he was going to head it, but he jumped even higher.
Joo Saldanha former football coach
He jumped really high. You had his chest on your head.
l would try to head it, he would iump, and then l'd be below his chest.
-He stopped in the air. -He always got the calculation right.
NARRATOR: In addition to all of his qualities,

Any intelligent player knows how to be tricky.
Pel was highly intelligent even at that.

He would kick and sometimes fall.
-Pel was a trickster! -Quite a trickster!
You have to be clever to play football.
Julio Mazzei former trainer
The penalties that he fabricated himself.
He would become entangled with his opponent
and throw himself to the ground.
-Shouting... -He shouted, ''Hey, hey!''
The referee...
Penalty.
l saw Pel making a play with the opponent's leg.
He touched the opponent's leg and the ball would come to him.
Many people didn't even understand it.
First time l saw it, l said, ''He just bumped into him.''
Even that was created by Pel's genius.
He had the ability to know the right time
to pass the ball between his opponent's legs.
He was magical.
He was an encyclopaedia of individual technique.
What he did with his feet was pure poetry.
NARRATOR: Pel's artistic football inspired both prose and verse.
(SOLEMN MUSIC PLAYING)

''to rewrite the bible of football. May it be so.''
(PLAYFUL MUSIC PLAYING)
NARRATOR: Pel's power to create goal-scoring plays was inexhaustible.
(CROWD CHEERING)
He knew no limits when it came to finishing.
His shooting was not instinctive. There was art in it.
His goals had style and personality.
With strong and precise shooting,
straight and curved,
he scored beautiful goals with his right leg.
He also scored wonderful goals with his left leg.
That's why no one could ever tell if Pel was right- or left-handed.
He scored ''bicycle goals''
that he inherited from the immortal Lenidas da Silva
and executed with perfectphysical harmony.
He scored amazing header goals.
Going up... flying...
Pushing...
Diving...
Landing...
And celebrating!
He took penalty shots with a smart technique that he called ''little stop'',
invented by the master Didi, which he made world-famous.

PLj: Scoring a goal is always a joy.
lt's an explosion, something that comes from inside of you.
l've scored many goals in my career that l'll never forget.
And almost all of those goals were recorded.
Now, there's a goal against Juventus that l consider
one of the most beautiful of my career, but it was never recorded.
The most beautiful goal from Pel that l saw was against Juventus.
The match was on August 2, 1959.
The place was really crowded.
lt was touching to see because we didn't have that many fans.
But he wasn't doing very well that day.
And he disappeared in the game.
l don't know why the Juventus fans, who weren't like that,
started to provoke him.
For a free kick that went awry.
-And he made a gesture. -He did this.
Like someone who says, ''Hold on, l'll get there.''
Suddenly, he lit up!
lt was like opening the gate.
He came from the tip of the penalty area to the goal area.
When Juninho got the ball, l thought he was going to head it.
When it came down, l got it.
He touched it with the tip of his shoe and kicked it over him.
-He left me hanging there. -From that...
-l don't have to say it! -He did three chip passes.
Thump, thump, thump...
The ball was coming down and Clvis was approaching.
l charged and he chipped it.
And the ball was coming down really fast!
Then came Homero, practically inside the area.
-Homero went and chipped it. -And got close to Mo de Onca.
Mo de Onca said, ''Leave it, it's mine!''
All modesty aside, l was like a cat.
And Mo de Onca came out with both hands outstretched.
l made my move and ended up with only mud in my hands.
And in front of the goal, he just nodded.
lt was the most beautiful goal in Pel's career.
lt's the most beautiful thing l have ever seen in my life.
He could do the one he scored against Fluminense anytime.
He could score that goal anytime.
The crowd stood up for about 10 minutes,
clapping their hands and shouting his name.
ANNOUNCER: Santos and Juventus,
the crowd awaits a good moment for the King of Football.
Running along the right side.
Preparing, puts it in the air. He goes in...
He chipped the first one, chipped now...
The goalie comes out. Pel heads it. It's a goal!
A chipping festival destroying the Juventus defence!
Four chips, he even chipped the keeper!
He's jumping...

The politicians had an interest
in having the thousandth goal scored in their own city.
There was some set-up going on in Joo Pessoa
and the Santos management realised that.
The coach, Antoninho, was worried.
Agnaldo former Santos player

Vasco tried hard to frustrate the unanimous wish of the crowd.
The celebration was intense for every save.
People from Vasco had already said, ''lt won't be today!''
Some would go past and tap me on the head, saying,
''You won't score here.''
(CROWD CHEERING)

Until a cross from Clodoaldo

A goal for everyone to see.
A providential penalty that brings glory.
The liberating goal.
The sacramental goal.
lt's the dawn of a new day in the life of the King.
PLj: l decided to return to the national team two years later
because l hadn't yet played an entire World Cup,
