and they look like superheroes.

L.A. County is a unique county.

It's one of the largest counties
in the whole country.

From the high desert

all the way down
to the beaches and the shores

and everything in between.

Cardiac arrest in our district.

Going into a dangerous
situation is not for everybody.

We're gonna make our push

I have been at Station 16
longer than anybody.

19 years.

MAN: Still checking out your
stuff after all these years.

-Lives depend on this, right?

DAN: Fire Station 16 is a very,
very active district.

We get a lot of shootings,
stabbings, fires.

Fire in the building.

But the people are fantastic
and they rely on us.

DAN:
And just being able to put

a smile on their face,
it makes me feel good,

and that's one of our
core values, is community.

16 has a reputation
of being a tough house.

It's in South Central
Los Angeles.

It's called the Fire Factory
for a reason.

every year, having the most

DAN:
Make sure your primary,

You have to have that love
for what you do,

because if you don't, like,
you're not going to last there.

I've been a captain
almost for 24 years now.

And after 24 years, I still love
getting into the fire.

I like backing
my firemen up, going,

"Kid, get *** in there!"

DAN:

DAN:

someone possibly inside.

And there's possibly
somebody trapped inside.

-Lot of smoke.

So you have Engine 9
and Engine 16 responding.

They're gonna be in charge of
extinguishing the fire

and we're gonna go and see
if we can make a rescue inside.

We got a commercial building
on fire, too.

It's going pretty good.

-I'm gonna get this side...

Well, the main concern

when we responded
to an RV fire is life.

So you gotta figure somebody
could still be in that RV.

Check the building.
If exposure's on fire,

I need somebody
to go in the building.

-DISPATCH: Engine 9, go ahead.

DAN:
It is my job as
a fire ground commander

to be the guys' eyes and ears.

I can see with--
sometimes what they don't see.

A high voltage power line,
it-it could end their life.

DAN:
Is this yours? What happened?

DAN:
Okay.

DAN: Okay, you're saying

somebody might have
torched it, then?

Okay.

DAN: Okay, if your wheels

were blocked
so you couldn't move it,

and that wasn't there
prior to that?

Okay, all right.

You guys getting foam?

DAN:
Good foam right now. Perfect.

Just smother the heck out of it.

We don't want to be back here.

We got lucky

it was just the front portion
of this, uh, trailer here.

If it got into the back portion,

we would have really
had a problem, because there's

a ton of tires back in here
and everything like that,

and it would have really
took off on us.

They're saying when
the male and female were here

when they started...
the fire started,

they're saying the lock
was busted.

So, obviously, they probably
popped the lock

and, uh, and started it, so.

To get going that, they
probably put an accelerant

or something in there.

DAN:
Every second counts.

The RV could get
an exposure going.

Man, it could be catastrophic

due to, uh...
who knows what's in there.

The guys are very aggressive
there and they, they

know how to... they know how
to fight the motorhomes.

It's like a well-oiled machine

and, and just watching them

do it makes me just go, "Yes!"

DAN:
Guys made a good stop.

When people think L.A.
and Southern California,

they think Hollywood.

For anyone who's been
to West Hollywood,

it's probably exactly what
you would think.

It's a different animal,
for sure.

The first month I was there,
I'm on the engine,

we're following the truck
and we're on Sunset Boulevard.

I look over, and in
a convertible Bentley,

smoking a cigar with shades on,

looking every bit like
you'd want him to look

if you met him in person,
is Arnold Schwarzenegger.

And I lean out,
and he gave me a fist bump,

and then he took off.

To have that in our district,

and the district that
I'm a captain in,

is kind of a... definitely
a unique, surreal experience.

JASON:
We run with other agencies.

We run with Los Angeles City
on every fire call.

We run with Beverly Hills
on every fire call.

We have a lot of large
apartment complexes,

a lot of high-rises.

These buildings are not easy.

Fortunately,
there's two captains every day,

and the captains that have
been there for a while,

very senior guys
very great at their job,

well respected.

Being able to learn

with them for the last year

has been pretty,
pretty great experience.

JASON:
Cole, what do you got
on the engine?

COLE:
Uh, engine's good.

Uh, Squadies, what do you got?

-It was perfect.

And then, uh, Nemo's the cook.

JASON:

NEHEMIAH:

So that being said,

So we're en route to a cardiac
arrest on Sunset Boulevard.

Male, 50s.

It says man down
with a gray tank top.

Oh, they're doing CPR on him.

on scene. CPR in progress.

ROY:
Let's go.

Bring it down. Start CPR.
Ruben, take over.

RUBEN: All right, sir,
I'll take it over from here.

What's going on?

REUBEN: Got it.

MICHAEL: Anytime we go on
a cardiac arrest,

there's a sense of urgency.
When a patient's heart

stops beating,
time is a huge necessity,

and the sooner CPR is started,

the better the odds are for them

to have a positive outcome.

RUBEN:
How long were you doing CPR for?

-Four minutes.
-Four minutes? Okay.

-He's, uh... agonal breathing.
-Do we have a pulse?

RUBEN:
I can't feel anything.

-Set this LUCAS device up.
-Got it.

MICHAEL:
At Fire Station 8,
we have a LUCAS machine.

It's essentially a machine

that we strap on the chest
of the patient

and it's... it does
the compressions for us.

Being able to work and
manipulate that patient

however we need and
they're still going to get

the efficient compressions.

ROY: Did he just fall?
Did he get hit by anything?

I saw it initially.
I called 911.

-Okay.
-And then he came by
and started doing CPR.

So was he running?
When you guys came upon him,

he was already on his...
he was already on the ground?

RUBEN:
Got an airway in?

-(machine tone)
-Clear.

We got pulses?

-He's pulseless.
-Go ahead and continue.

You want him waiting to
establish an IV right here.

Get some fluids on board.

that guy fell down in front of

a registered nurse,
which he started CPR right away.

Usually we don't get
pulses back that fast.

That nurse kept his pump going,
and, uh...

which probably saved
that guy's life.

We still... did we get
any vitals or anything?

They're working on it.

MICHAEL:
It can be a very stressful job.

We are put in these
intense situations

that most people won't see.

You can't wear all these calls,
right?

You never last 30 years.

So you-you go on the next call,
because at the end of the day,

no matter how intense
or serious that call was,

you could have another one
ten minutes from now.

So you always have to have--
be on your game.

He's starting to breathe
on his own?

-Yeah, we're good to go.

I need you to drive
the squad to the hospital.

RUBEN:

DISPATCH:

Someone just drove their car

through the gas station.

It says pump on fire.

a gas station fire.

Uh, if the gas pump's on fire,

ERIK:
Hey, we got smoke and fire.
That's the pump.

heavy black smoke showing.

DAN:

PACO: Fighting fires is what
we do, and it's what we do best.

But when you think about, like,
it's at a gas station

with the potential of it
not just being a fire,

but it could possibly blow up
a city block.

It kind of makes your, you know,

the hair stand up
on the back of your neck.

DAN:
Right here. Get a reel line.

-L.A. Engine 16 on scene.
-(firetruck beeping)

We do have a gas pump on fire.

Fire Station 16 can handle.

FIREFIGHTER:
Is there a shut-off?

FIREFIGHTER:

DAN:
L.A. Engine 16. Be advised,
we do have knock-down.

We have shut off the gas pump.

All units will be out
approximately 15 minutes.

Watch out, there's probably

DAN:
So what happened is

looks like there was
a police chase going on.

The vehicle hit the gas pump,
knocked it over, and then fled.

DISPATCH:
L.A. 16, sheriff is requesting
medical treatment

for a tased patient
front of your location.

DAN:
Hey, Romeo, they got
a tased patient over there.

-This is a result of
the high speed chase.
-Oh, okay.

DISPATCH:
L.A. 16, go ahead and put
Squad 16 on that call, please.

Hi, ma'am.

-Hi.
-Are the prongs still on you?

-I don't know.

ROMEO: A little bit

over onto his left side

and get on his back.

He's been shot,
his heart stopped,

he's bleeding out and
we've got to pump his heart

for him to keep him alive.

We've got to breathe for him
because he stopped breathing.

His life is literally
in our hands.

DAN:

Being on a lot of these
gunshot wounds,

I don't give up,

even though I can say
90% of these don't make it,

we're fighting
all the way to the end.

DAN:

TONY:

I try not to think about each
call individually because

the human aspect of it is...
is horrific.

DAN:
They started bagging him

because he did have pulses
but he was losing his pulses.

We have memorials
throughout the whole city.

You're driving by,
there's candles,

there's flowers.

And every corner, you're like,

that was a call
that this guy got shot.

And on that corner was
that lady that died.

And on this corner is...

And we have so many that

you can't keep track of them
anymore.

JASON: Young guys follow
the more experienced guys.

The more experienced guys,
please, I want you to

talk out loud what you're doing

so the young guys
can get it and grasp it.

The guys who are a little more
technically trained

on the ECAR,

I've been a firefighter
for over three years.

This is a job that I've wanted

since I was coming
out of high school.

I had no other desire
but to be a firefighter.

All right, David, are you good?

Jeremy, you want hand signs

-JEREMY: Both, please.

DAVID:
You know, when you first
get hired,

you do probation for a year.
Traditionally.

It has taken me close to three
years to finish probation

because a few months
into probation

um... it got put on a pause

because I was diagnosed with
stage three *** cancer.

The day right after
my 29th birthday,

I did a CAT scan.

And in that CAT scan,
it was revealed that it...

there had been a-a spread
to both my lungs and my abdomen.

FIREFIGHTER (on radio):
Truck 8,
208 on the scene on water.

FIREFIGHTER:
Copy, 208.

Supply Engine 8 with water.

FIREFIGHTER (on radio):
Water coming.

DAVID:
During treatment,

there would have been
no possible way

I would have been able to work,
so that's when these guys

were working forme.

They would pick up my shifts
so I could still have

insurance to be able
to be covered.

-Perfect.
-Solid.

We're all on a team here.
Trying to get the job done.

DAVID:
You hear about the...
the family that the

fire service has, how we all
look out for one another.

But to experience it
so early on to my career was...

(stammering):
it's mind-blowing.

It's a lot of work being
a probationary firefighter,

especially when you're
already behind the eight ball--

no pun intended--
but keep pushing forward.

Still baby in this career.
I have a lot to learn.

NEHEMIAH:
Thank you, Cap.

STAN: Fire Station 37,
it's in Palmdale,

and it's in what we consider,

in L.A. County,
to be in the desert.

It's different from
a lot of other locations

because it's so flat, without
buildings, lots of grass areas.

It's much more windy

than would be down
in the basin or at the beach.

You've got so many
other factors to think about.

It's exciting, it's dynamic.

Watch his respiratory drive,

make sure we're breathing
for him if he stops breathing.

You just never know
what you're going to get.

Brush fires,
grass fires...

It's crazy intense,
it's stressful.

It's frightening at points.

But it's what
we all signed up to do.

DISPATCH:

STAN:
If that is a hill fire,

we should be able to see it
off ahead of us

-soon as we round the corner.

California is-- it's a matchbox
waiting to happen.

We'll send out a lot of
equipment

to their counties to help them

fight fires and they'll come
help us out.

You can see it.

STAN:
Fire can spread uphill
very quickly.

I've heard rates as fast
as 70 miles per hour.

So it's in our best interest
and safety for everyone

to put that fire out
as quickly as possible.

Oh yeah, look at that header.

(radio chatter)

Sounds like handcrews
and helicopters as well.

Engine 24 is on scene,

reporting a half-acre
creeping in

light to medium fuels.

Fall out!

Make an aggressive attack.

That's what people are
counting on with us, right?

-FIREFIGHTERS: Sir, yes, sir!
-It's time to go to work.

STAN: There are several
what we call camp crews

or hand crews stationed
throughout the county.

MAN (over radio):
We have approximately

one acre...
with potential for five.

STAN:
When you talk about

containment of a fire
or control line of a fire,

these are the guys
putting in the work to do that.

Everybody's secure back there?

-Yeah, thumbs up.

Chocks are up,
the doors are shut.

STAN:
They go in and literally
scratch down to mineral soil

line around this fire
so that it can't

creep out around us,
or come back and flank us.

That same helicopter
will become

a water-dropping helicopter
as well.

Take a right here

along the dirt road
by the sheriff's

to see if we can get
ahead of it

and get an idea
of what's ahead of it.

STAN:

and keep them from turning
into a large campaign fire.

STAN:
A-firm, 37 Zulu.

We're heading another
100 feet right now

to extend up around to you.

When we have
firefighters out cutting line,

it looks like they're digging
trenches and what they're doing

is removing fuel
from the fire.

Hey, watch your footing

We're gonna clean this up
right here.

Spend time with that.

STAN: I'm thinking
about safety for my crew.

I'm thinking about water supply.

There's no hydrants out
in the middle of the hills.

Each fire engine
carries 500 gallons of water.

That's what I'm allocated
right now

till helicopters start
dropping water.

(over radio):
We got a 'copter available.

He's gonna drop
at the end of this fire.

That'll knock
the bulk of it off.

DISPATCH:

and heli-tanker 6.

Right now, we've stopped
the forward progress.

We're calling knockdown,

This is, this is what we call
the mop-up or cleanup phase

to make sure it doesn't spread.

You know, Quebec, we throw
the big Super Scoopers.

They're coming in right now

to make a drop right
in the middle of it.

There they are.

STAN:
Even once we've gone past

and we've put out a fire,

there's going to be
smoldering pieces,

that could in a big gust
of wind, pick up an ember,

throw it to a spot
outside of our line,

and start another fire.

They're doing a couple more,
there's another one.

The only reason this
didn't turn into something

bigger was because of the help.

We had the helicopters,
they were dropping water.

We knocked this one down
pretty quick.

Full assault
on everything we have.

In the past, we may or may not
have had those Super Scoopers

come and drop on this.

We're not messing around
anymore,

we're putting them out
right away.

We want zero chance
it's gonna make a run

towards homes or anything.

MICHAEL:
Tonight's a big night

at Fire Station 8--

after three years of probation,

Dave is becoming a full-fledged
firefighter with L.A. County.

start grabbing food.

DAVID:
That's teriyaki chicken,
but the teriyaki's on the side.

I figured more people

would probably prefer to keep it
dry and add as pleased,

as they please.

it's least I could do
is feed you guys.

MICHAEL:
With the fire department,

you get a second family
whether you want it or not.

And when something like
Dave's situation happens,

you have the support
of the fire service

and the fire department.

DAVID:
They didn't write me off.
I came back very nervous.

I didn't know if my body
was gonna be able to handle it.

They were there,

step-by-step,
and provided a lot of guidance,

and built up my confidence,
and never really gave up on me,

and I wasn't gonna
give up myself.

DISPATCH:

Firefighters have died
on fires

smaller than this fire.

-Oh, my God.

Dave means the world to us
here at the station.

and meeting the faces

that we've been hearing about
for all this time,

it's really special for us.

We got, uh--
Dave's final dinner was tonight.

He's off probation,
usually a year.

So we got him
his five-year pin,

because it took Dave
a little bit longer than usual.

MICHAEL:
When you're on probation,
you wear red helmets.

And when you're off probation,

you graduate to a black shield
that says firefighter on it,

and there's no one more
deserving than you, Dave, so...

JASON:
Thank you very

I'd also like to thank
your family

for giving us David
for a little while.

For putting him in our,

in our lives and he makes all
of us better every day.

David is a freaking warrior.

A lot was weighing on him,
and, uh...

You'll always be a part
of 8's fire family

and always be loved.

I'm excited for your future,

and I'm lucky to call you
my friend.

You know firefighters,
we have this image

of being stoic and tough guys.

But we also have
our soft sides,

and I'm a big softy.

I always tell everybody,
I'm a big teddy bear.

And, listening to his speech,
yeah.

It made me tear up, because, uh,

it was, it meant,
it means a lot.

Best word I could use
right now, it's very humbling.

I'm don't know how I'm gonna
follow up with all that.

I thought I had a big family,

but it became
an even bigger family,

because everybody here,
I consider

a family member to me.

Getting diagnosed with cancer,
I-I was lost, I was scared.

And these guys, who had only
known me for a few months,

worked for me

so I could continue
to have health benefits

so I could be treated.

Um, that's...

Sorry, give me a second. Um...

I can't express how grateful
I am for that.

Because it meant--
it means the world to me.

And, when everything is--

Oh, gracias,mama.
(chuckles)

Um... (sniffles)

I had two families
looking out for me.

I had my immediate family,

and thanks to the new family
here, I'm able

to be here,
achieve my dream that I wanted

of being a firefighter.

Thank you, thank you.

MICHAEL:
I believe firefighters
all over the world

are all built the same way.

And this could, whether
it's L.A. County, L.A. City,

or FDNY, I guarantee you,

stories like this happen
in all these departments.

It gives you an immense
sense of pride that you're

able to be part of this,

part of the fire service
in general.

And it's not even a question,

it's make sure
they're taken care of,

and step up and do
what needs to be done.

WOMAN:

What do we got, Dan?

We have vehicle versus go-kart.

Male, unknown age,

unknown injuries.

PACO:
So this guy's probably going

30, 40 miles an hour into a car,

This... this could be
pretty bad.

Jeez, man.

PACO:
These go-kart calls

are very common in our area,
and they're very serious.

I mean, it's multiple
broken bones.

It's a, you know, a body
that's just literally mangled.

You know, when we hear these
calls, it's always like,

"Ugh," because you,
you see these kids,

driving around the street
all the time,

ripping through traffic,

No helmets, no seat belts,
nothing.

NEHEMIAH:
Ooh, this is all messed up.

PACO:
Tell me what's bothering
you the most right now.

This side of my ribs,
hurt, hurt.

Listen, relax, relax,
you're okay.

-You're doing very well.
-(pained groans)

PACO:
Where is hurting you right now?

Where were you-- what happened
and where did it happen?

MAN:
I was riding
down the court.

-Do you know how fast?
-Yeah, I was going pretty fast.

My man was driving this way

and they ... make a U-turn.

It's bad, you hear me, it's bad.

DAN:
Well, he's in good hands
right now, okay?

PACO:
He could potentially
have some type of head injury.

He could have some
kind of subdermal bleed,

he could have a dermal bleed,
he could have, you know,

a slow bleed.

Depending what type of bleed
he has,

we don't have that much time.

We want to get him
over to a hospital

and get that CT scan on him.

Okay, I'm gonna
hold your neck, okay?

PACO:
I just need you to relax, okay?

You're doing very well.

He's got a couple of
lacerations on his face.

Tell me what's bothering
you the most right now.

MAN:
This side of my ribs,
I can't breathe.

PACO:
On a call like this.

my job as a patient man is
to... to treat that patient.

You know, treat those wounds,
you know,

make sure that guy's gonna
have a positive outcome.

TONY:
So it flipped over?

-They hit him on the side.
-He flipped over back.

-He fell out of it?
-Yes.
-Yeah, and he got up.

Then he just

sat on the sidewalk
and tried to rest.

TONY:
And how did these break up,
this, uh?

-That's how he hit his face.
-All right.

TONY:
The kid said he flipped over it.

The seat is broken

-and the handlebars are...
-Unenclosed, right?

TONY:
Yeah, no helmet,
but he said no KO.

He got up immediately
and said, "Get me help."

-Your oxygen level's good, okay?
-Yeah.

PACO:
I'm gonna touch you, let me know
if you have any pain anywhere.

MAN:
Right there, my hand, my hand!

ERIC:
Don't move, Rudy, don't move.

All right, I don't want you

to mess up your back
any more, okay?

PACO:
Let the wife know
he's checking out just fine.

Everything's good.

A little swelling, but
that's it, a little bruising.

DAN:
Hey, he's gonna be okay,
all right?

We'll take him to the hospital,
he'll be okay.

-Can we see him?
-Yeah, you can go see him.

PACO:
Sir, we're gonna get
you checked out, all right?

We're gonna get some X-rays.

You're headed to the best care,
all right?

MAN:
Yeah.

Even though I can't see
all of his injuries,

I feel pretty confident
that this guy's gonna be okay.

WOMAN:
Where is he, wait a minute,
where is he?

TONY:
Ma'am, ma'am, ma'am,
he's fine, okay?

He's got some injuries,

-but we're gonna take him...
-(woman speaking indistinctly)

PACO:
It's normal for the family
to be upset.

I think the fact is
you have to show that you care.

-Rudy, Rudy!
-He's fine, ma'am. He's fine.

PACO:
If we give them those
two seconds to, you know,

see their loved one,
let them know that there's

someone in the back
that's gonna, you know,

take care of them, that's
gonna make sure they're okay.

Now they can kind of, at least,
put that down

and relax more.

ROMEO:
Vital signs are perfect.

DAN:
Okay, let's go.

ERIK (over radio):
You guys going to the taco spot?

DAN (over radio):
Why don't we go
to that taco place

-on Fur and Firestone?
-That new one?

I like the burritos because

they don't make them too big

where they blow out,
they just make them

perfect size and
the carne asada is so good.

TONY:
Taco stands in L.A.
are like the foundation

of the fire department--
I love my Mexican food,

it's cheesy, saucy and sloppy
and that's,

that's my
flavor profile right there.

-(laughter)
-Hold up!

Ooh, there's the pastor,
right there.

TONY:
So you said the bucha,
is it cheap?

La cabezais the head.

He's got a lot,
I would eat his head

if it was, like,
if he was a cow.

-Yeah?
-(chuckles)

Carne asada, please.

DAN:
That's perfect.

Captain Dan Olivas loves
his Mexican food.

Oh, yes, this is gonna be good.

Pequito, pequito, pequito.

That's it, yep, perfect,
thank you very much.

TONY:
He thinks
he can handle those hot salsas.

DAN:
Oh, yes. Perfect.

TONY:
And he goes adventurous
with his spices.

But once it hits the tongue,

it burns him and then you'll see
him break down with the sweat.

DAN:
Gotta get this stuff--
not spicy.

TONY:
It's gonna be hot for you, Dan.

His whole sympathetic system

kicks into action.

DAN:
Well, maybe it is hot.

-It's good.
-It's a burrito, fill me up.

We have to take care of him.

We gotta make sure
we take care of our captain.

DISPATCH:
Engine 11, 63...

DISPATCH 2:
Engine 9, Engine 16,
vehicle fire.

DISPATCH:
Engine 12, 107, medical rescue.

DISPATCH 3:
147, Squad 16, gunshot wound.
Sheriff on scene.

DISPATCH: Okay, where is
the fire? I'll send you help.

What's on fire?

DISPATCH:
The pallet's on fire?

DISPATCH: Just make sure to get
everybody out, okay?

We are on the way there.

All right, structure fire.

Looks like we're
on the third alarm.

Oh, man, you can see it.

Dang, that's a lot of smoke.

SHEILA:
What is on fire?

Are those pallets?

Those are just massive
amounts.

So you can see how there's

fire coming through the roof
right there.

So it's already
jumped over here,

so it's gonna run through
that building right there,

because there's nothing
to stop it.

-(labored breathing)
-Oh ...

-Look at that fire behavior.
-Oh, my God.

We need more pressure.

I need more pressure there!

DAN:
It's a very dangerous job.

You got to watch my back,
and I watch yours,

because things could turn
in an instant.

SHEILA:
This place is going to blow.

If we're trying to catch
this fire, we need to move.

We need to start a helicopter
for a trauma patient.

(door shuts, seatbelt clicks,
switch flips)

We are angels in the sky.

ANDERSON:
This is one of the biggest
fires that I've seen

in my 17 years
in the fire service.

Every time I work this tower,
I have a rescue.

Get on board as quick
as you can.

I'm teaching Scouler
how to be a firefighter.

Being part of this family,
it's a big deal.

Heavy smoke!

ERIN: This is, like,
the culmination of everything.

It's game time.

Female is in labor right now
in an RV.

God, I may deliver this kid.

All right,
we're gonna go for it.

We just got a call
for a gunshot wound.

You still don't know
how long he has.

People can spiral down
faster than you think.

DAN:
I'm out the door.

I'm getting ready to retire.

It's all you guys, now.

My son is about to graduate
from the Academy.

It's a proud dad moment.

Good job. Love you so much.

I know this is
the real deal and I know

we have minutes
to save this guy's life.

-(groaning)
