When I woke up, the sun was high

and cutting through my window like a

For a second, I was peaceful,

suspended in that metal vacuum

that lies between sleep and consciousness

and then the whole thing came back.

take it somewhere, anywhere,

until I could figure what to do.

I remember getting in my car

and starting back for Rome.

I never made it.

Somewhere along the way

I must have passed out.

When I came to there was

no feeling of time elapsed

yet somehow I knew it was later.

And I was stretched out

somewhere in a small dark room.

I couldn't breathe and then I saw the

window and the faces on the other side.

They came up out of

nowhere and peered in the window

and then disappeared and

another came up to take its place.

Some of the faces I knew, some I didn't.

There was Gisavo and

once Tony and Angela.

Always Angela and the strangers.

Every time Angela's face

appeared I shut my eyes

but she came right through the lids.

I couldn't blot her out.

Then one of the strangers

came up and didn't disappear.

Instead he smiled.

Smiled and reached over and then the

window started to rise.

Strong light came in to hurt my eyes.

I was out of my little dark room.

I looked around.

I was home.

Home in my own bed.

And Gisavo stood beside the strange face.

This is Dr. Rubini, Steve.

What?

pneumonia. You're out of danger now.

You passed the crisis last night.
