Christopher and I met in high school.

- Me and Terra met in high school.

- I was the new girl at
school, so it was like,

"Oh, Terra do you think
anyone's attractive?

Like, who do you like?"

And people are trying to feel me out.

- I used to DJ at lunch,

and just see her like
in passing or whatever.

- There was this guy under a ramada,

and he was setting up DJ equipment,

and I just watched him for like an hour.

- I remember what she was wearing

and she had a big old
booty, and... (laughs)

- When I was like, "Oh, he's fine.

He's good-looking."

- Everybody, the homies are like,

"Dang, she got a big booty," or whatever.

- And then I just went up to
him and introduced myself.

I don't, no idea why.

Just something just brought me to him.

- I just kind of didn't say anything.

That's like my personality.

I was like, "Yeah, she
looked good, but whatever,"

like to myself.

- We exchanged letters through
a friend a couple times.

- She wrote a letter to
give to him to give to me.

- And we started exchanging
letters to each other

and that's how we communicated.

- Somehow, I don't know,
she ended up liking me.

- High school sweethearts,
which is kind of unheard of.

You know.

They say when there's something good,

you should always go after it, right?

And hold it if you can.

So, I think we both did that.

We both did that early on.

(rhythmic music)

- I genuinely love DJing.

It's something that I fell
in love with as a kid.

Because of hiphop,

the way hiphop culture
has created this DJ thing,

it changed the way people

look at turntables or a record player.

I think anybody,

their first thought when
they see a turntable was like

they want to go up and scratch it.

- One evening, we're sitting, watching TV,

and then we hear this scratching,

this mixing coming from down the hall,

and it was actually Chris
and his brother Matthew

on the floor mixing it up.

From the start, they
were pretty much on beat.

You know, didn't hear a lot of trampling,

a lot of galloping like when
you're trying to catch a beat

from one to the other.

They were pretty much on beat,

and that's kind of what
the old light bulb came on.

- I think Chris eventually
talked my parents

into getting a nicer setup.

My brother had belt drive turntables.

He talked them into getting
direct drive turntables,

which you could do more tricks on those.

- Yeah, I picked it up during
high school, and you know,

I messed around with the
turntables a little bit,

but once Chris jumped on there,

it was like pretty obvious
that he was gonna do way more

than I ever could do with him, so.

(Chris grunting)

- I know a lot of guys get into DJing

because it puts them in the spotlight,

they get girls or whatever,

the free drinks or whatever.

I'm more into the free drinks,

not the girls, but... (laughs)

- I think everyone views
the DJ like this crazy,

outgoing guy who has all the girls,

who does drugs and gets
drunk all the time and stuff,

and like, yeah, early time,

that's what you view, oh
the party-goer and stuff,

and Christopher is not that person.

He is the complete opposite.

He knows how to have a good time,

but he does not indulge
in any of those things.

I have nothing to worry
about when he goes out.

Absolutely nothing.

- I think we're all raised

with a pretty good head on our shoulders.

I think the reason why
Chris isn't an alcoholic

or into drugs or obsessed
with girls and stuff

is 'cause we DJ for the right reasons.

We DJ 'cause we love to DJ.

You know, it's not about looking cool.

It's not about getting the
bar tab or any of that.

So, I think Chris is just very passionate

about the art of DJing.

- No, he's always been pretty levelheaded,

pretty focused.

He knows what's important.

I think he had his
parents, his aunts, uncles,

our entire family to kind
of emulate his sense.

Yeah, I won't throw any
of the boys under the bus,

but certainly not Chris.

- I'm used to it, so it's normal,

but I could only imagine
bringing my dad out

and him seeing some of this stuff.

But I'm happy that I'm
not into cocaine anymore,

and I'm just playing.

Nah, I've never done cocaine.

But...

- So, my mom and dad
would take me to the store

called the Guitar Center,

because they had all the equipment,

the nice equipment on display,

and you could actually if you
gave them a driver's license,

they would give you a pair of needles

and you could go practice on
the gear that they had there.

- Chris was scratching in in the store

and got the attention of somebody

who worked for the radio station,

and was like, "Hey, you
should come by and mix."

- He happened to be the morning host

on Power 92 at the time,

was the radio station,

and his name was Davey D.

It was "Davey D & the Wakeup Show."

- [Davey D] This young
man's name is Chris.

I saw him at Guitar Center.

What's up, Chris?
- What's up?

- [Davey D] How you doing?

- Good.
- Oh, he's typical DJ.

Don't want to talk.

Just wants to get on the turntables.

(Chris laughs)
Ah, golly.

Hey, when I watched him,

he didn't know who I was at first,

and I was watching him do his thing.

He was in a little mix
competition at the Guitar Center.

He was with his mom and his

other little brothers and sisters,

and when we introduced ourselves,

and I said, "Hey, I'm gonna
have you on the radio,"

because so many times we hear

about the bad things that kids do,

and this is one of them situations
where we have a youngster

who is doing something positive

and he's got a hobby
that's dear to my heart,

because it's how I started in radio.

That's how I started, Chris.

I started mixing on the turntables,

and so I invited you down here

so that you can flex your
skills for the city of Phoenix

so that they can see how bad you are.

- I go and I play a
30-minute mix on primetime,

you know Phoenix Radio,

as a 13-year-old seventh-grader, you know?

So, off of that one experience,

I met a bunch of people that

it was easier for me to
get in the door, you know?

Right outta high school.

- It's history, man.

- I am the middle child.

Five brothers.

We're all pretty close in age.

Growing up, me and my
brothers, we'd breakdance.

So.

One of the ways I was exposed to DJing

was through break-dancing and hiphop.

We all did stuff together.

We hung out together.

Instead of having best friends,

you have your brothers, you know?

- Oh, yeah, very different.

The boys all have different

Chris is probably the quietest,

which is kind of ironic because he's

probably in the biggest stage.

- Eddie, Nick, Chris,
Matthew, and then me.

But like me and Matthew

are like nearly a decade
apart from each other, so.

Practically I'm like a only
child 'cause they're all old,

and I mean, it's just cool
having older brothers.

- I'm the oldest, so I would
get excluded sometimes,

'cause you know, Nick, Chris,

and Matt were pretty close in age,

and I always had to be
like the old man character

whatever games we were
playing and stuff, so.

- In terms of, as we say in
Spanish, (speaks Spanish)

meaning mischievous things, you know,

it's probably my oldest, Eddie.

Oh yeah, he gave us a run for our money,

especially in Catholic school.

Yeah, he got calls.

- The one right below me
is Matt, and he DJs, too.

I would say the only difference
between me and him is,

I guess I just put myself
out there a little more.

Like I got on the radio sooner,

but as far as talent goes, he's the shit,

and I'm not saying that
'cause he is my brother,

but he's really good.

How cool is this?

Not a lot of people can say this,

but literally at one time,

we were on the two top radio stations

in the Phoenix market at the
same time slot every day.

I don't like to put
boundaries on what I play.

Musically, I don't like
to stick to one thing.

As a kid, you would think my first records

would be whatever was on
the radio at the time,

so let's say back in the day,

maybe it was Puff Daddy or
some Snoop Dogg or whatever.

It wasn't like that.

My first records were my parents' records.

- You always came over and heard music,

and we didn't have to be clean

to be listening to it, either.

My wife, she loved music, I love music.

That's the way the boys grew up,

hearing all kinds of genres.

- Classic rock, jazz, funk, Latin.

If you play it cool,

if you present it well

and back it up with good songs

before and after,

make that shit fresh.

I have college kids singing
and dancing to Stevie Wonder,

which is huge,

but it's like these people think

you can't play Stevie Wonder in the club.

- As parents,

we wanted them to follow their
dreams, for the most part,

whether it meant college

or whatever they're in, the arts, music,

when they started showing interest in it,

we kind of nurtured that
by buying them equipment.

Of course they had to pay us back.

- Music is music.

It's fun.

Don't over-complicate it.

I never really chose this career.

I never really envisioned
me making a living,

buying a house with money
that I made from DJing.

I guess when I knocked up my girlfriend?

No, nah.

We were married when she got pregnant,

but yeah, I guess when I found out that

we were gonna have a kid,

it just put me in go mode.

- Christopher and I have two kids,

Katherine is about to be
four, and my son Esai,

he is six months, and I love them so much.

- Doing what I do and having a family,

it's been a learning experience.

Going into this environment that's like,

it's just a party atmosphere,

and you're seeing drinking and drugs

and girls and lights and loud music,

and then coming home and seeing
this little angel asleep,

it helps that I have
such a supportive wife.

I don't think I would have been able

to get here where I'm
at if it wasn't for her.

We're a team.

- As far as him getting opportunity

and being away from the family,

that's just part of what he does,

and I know that, my kids
will grow up knowing that,

but they will also grow
up knowing that their papa

is doing what he needs to
do to provide for his family

and to be here for his family,

and and that's really
what it comes down to.

- Sometimes, you have to be out

even when you're not actually DJing,

just shaking hands and showing your face,

and sometimes it requires going out

and having a few drinks or whatever,

and she has to put up with
me like that or whatever.

So, but after we had Katherine,

I didn't really realize.

It took me a while.

I sound stupid,

but it took me a while to realize

you can't be doing this shit no more.

You gotta get it together.

I just love my kids,

and I'm just excited for what
the future holds for them,

and seeing like little parts of like me

or Terra in Katherine,

and then just seeing what is just her.

It's cool.

You know, as I've gotten older,

I realized that it's
not just all about me.

It's about setting a good
example and stuff like that.

as the World DJ Championships,

Red Bull Music 3Style has taken over

the city of Taipei, Taiwan
for the entire week.

Taipei is home to some
of the best clubs in Asia

and the perfect place to
host a week-long party.

- [Z-Trip] The DJs in the
Red Bull 3Style World Finals

have put in six months to a
year's prep into their routines.

They put in all the work to get here

and now they've put in extra work

to find out who's the best party rocker.

The DJs in the finals are
coming from all over the world

to compete for the crown of
world's best party rock DJ.

(upbeat electronic music)

Each DJ's set is 15 minutes long

and it's gotta encompass three
different styles of music.

This is not a competition
where you can play it safe.

The DJs got to impress everybody,
judges, crowd, other DJs.

You've got to wow everybody

and you've got to come out on top.

To actually compete against other DJs

and walk out as the winner,

that's gonna be the biggest
highlight of your career.

I guess it's tied in the same thing.

and you gotta play three genres of music

within your 15 minutes.

- Yeah, so it sounds simple enough,

but if you win this set,

could take me to the
world finals in Taiwan,

so gotta make sure it's dope.

- Red Bull is like the Olympics to DJing

in the DJ community right
now, as it is right now.

So, it used to be the DMCs
back in the day, right?

That was the battle everyone wanted to do

and everyone wanted to win,

but now it's Red Bull.

Being a part of it,

and being where he is
right now in his career,

it's, yeah, it's pretty big.

- I've been involved with
this competition in the past,

but the competition
wasn't what it is today,

and I wasn't what I am today.

I think I was like 19 or something.

This was back in the day,

but I don't even like to bring that up.

I think it's cool how far I've come,

but looking back on that,
that was embarrassing.

So, I kind of feel like I need

to redeem myself this time, you know?

so that people are

I think I'm like the only
parent in this competition.

Maybe it's not fair for me to assume.

I think there's one other parent,

but I think his kids are
already fully grown and stuff,

so it's different.

It's been nearly impossible

to try to really get in the zone

and practice and be creative

makes it really tough

to try to get in a groove,

- I actually met Chris two years ago,

and I was always just a fan of his videos.

I used to see everything
that he would put up,

all those really good scratching
videos, his concept videos,

everything he was doing.

A friend of mine works at
a club back in Pennsylvania

that was trying to book people,

and he reached out to me and
asked me who should we book,

and I was like, "Yeah, you
should try to get Chris,

that guy Chris Villa to come out here.

He seems like a perfect
fit for what we do here."

Instead of sending a driver down there,

my friend asked me if I
wanted to pick him up,

so I was like, "Yeah, of
course I want to pick him up.

That's awesome."

So, we set it up,

I went and picked him up,

and on the drive there and back,

I got to pick his brain,

and by the end of the trip,

that was literally less than 24 hours

I got to spend with him,

and in that time, I connected
with him really well.

We had the same humor,

and he just seemed like a real cool dude.

And then eventually he invited me

to come out here to hang out,

so this is like my fourth
or fifth time out here.

- But, yeah, I need his help,

and he just came out of his
own closet with his sexuality.

(Dominic laughs)

He just came out of his own competition.

He was in another DJ competition

and he got second place,

and he was sending me ideas,

and I was kind of giving him feedback,

so I think it's perfect timing

because we're in the same mindset.

- I know that he has a lot of notoriety

and he has a lot of eyes watching him

anytime he posts anything

leading up to this competition.

I know he is got a lot of
lot of people staring at him,

so it's kind of cool,

and it feels good to be
able to be in a position

where he trusts that my ideas

are going to be able to help him succeed.

I could take one word from one song

and then link it with another
song just by those two words

or by the same concept.

As DJs, we all play the same music,

but how are you playing
the same music differently

so it's more than just

influenced by my parents' relationship.

Terra didn't have the
best situation growing up,

so long story short, it required her to,

my family took her in,

which most families would
probably be against, you know?

But at the time, that
was just what it was.

who instilled amazing values.

- The way my dad loved
my mom, it was obvious,

the way he treated her, and...

- I could care less if he's
a DJ, if he sold homes,

if he worked in an office.

I love him for who he is,
the person that he is,

the family that he comes from,

the way that he is so self-giving.

- When you have an
amazing mother or father,

you kind of want your significant other

to have those certain qualities

that you admire about your parents,

and I could see like some
of those same qualities

that my mom had that she had.

Seeing what they had, that
just molded us to what we are.

- Supportive is not the

He is a strong and confident and amazing

and has this talent that is God-given,

and if he were not to
follow through with that,

that's like a slap in the face.

He said to me many times,

"I should quit because I'm
not with the family as much,"

my mom and dad's relationship,

like with my mom's passing,

and the cancer, that definitely
brought us closer together.

She had a Facebook page.

She wouldn't post post a
lot, but every now and then,

I'll go look at her posts,

and she's like, "Everybody

and she doesn't know how to
tag properly or whatever,

but she's there riding for me.

proud mother, you know?

So, not just Chris.

I think that it's motivated him.

It's motivated Chris,

trying to make his mom proud,

which we were from the start, you know?

But it's motivated him to
even reach even further,

I keep her spirit alive like when I DJ,

music that we would listen,

that I would hear her

mom didn't like wack shit.

I think everybody who competed did great

and I think everybody who competed,

or especially the top three that placed,

I think we all felt like we won,

and I will say that it
could have went any way,

especially the top three.

I'm not being political.

I'm being honest.

- Honestly, that lineup was so heavy

that I could understand that the judges

have a really hard time deciding.

- No, he should've won.

Christopher should've won.

If he would've gotten second or third,

they're interchangeable to me.

It doesn't matter.

I think that he should've won.

You can think what you want, you know?

Everyone is entitled to their
own opinion, but you're wrong.

(laughs)

(Chris chuckles)

- I wanted to hit 'em
in the head technically

and just like show 'em
this is what I can do.

Like, no breathing room,

and then just the rest kind of like

just let the music do its magic.

I felt really good about what I did.

Actually, I felt really good,

and I was just like, yeah, I did it.

But...

- [Interviewer] So, when
you say you got emotional...

- I knew this was coming.

- [Interviewer] What did that look like?

- I should have controlled
my emotions a little more

and I think that I let
them get the better of me,

and I probably shouldn't
have let anyone see that,

but you know,

that's my husband and
I'll do anything for him.

So, the people who he
was competing against,

those were our friends, you know?

And it's nothing against them.

It has everything to do
with I'm his biggest fan

and I know how well he did.

- Not to sound like, you know,

to say this to make myself feel better,

but even though I didn't win on paper,

I still feel like I won in a sense

because the performance that I put on,

it sent a very strong message.

I strictly won them
over with just my DJing.

- At all the sets,

every single one of
them dissed Christopher.

Christopher dissed one person,
but all of them dissed him.

Why?

- I'm just grateful for
the overall experience,

not just the battle itself,

but seeing people that
you really care about

and knowing that they care about you,

but knowing that they
care about you so much

to make time outta their schedule

and literally call off work
and come through and help.

I'm grateful for that.

- But there's next year.

He's gonna come back next year

and he's gonna do what he
did this year, but better.

And guess what?

If they want to crown someone else,

then he's gonna come back
again the following year

and the following year

until they realize how stupid they are

and realize how amazing he is.

- I plan to be back and just keep going,

and it was definitely inspiring.

I needed something like
that to light more fire.

Regardless of the results or whatever,

I'm grateful for that,

to have that experience in my life.

It showed me a lot.
