I hate it when people
ask me that question.

I mean, do they have 15
minutes to listen to me?

Or are they just bein' polite?

[laughs] Hey, I'm, I'm good,

I'm not doin' well.

I'll tell ya how I'm doin'.

Seven years ago, I had a dream.

I had all this land and thought,

"Why not grow cannabis?"

The only problem
was, I'm an actor.

I grew up on the
streets of Chicago.

I'm not a farmer.

Battery's dead.

[clanking]

Well, I figured,
"Ah, what the heck?

Let's give it a shot."

So, I partnered up with my
dear friend, Dan Aykroyd.

I got something to
tell you that's no joke.

The Blues Brothers
weed is mighty fine smoke.

[Jim] And I convinced my cousin,
Chris, to help me run the business.

[bleeping]

I might stake out a
little area for an office.

Yeah, do you see right over
there where the cows are?

[mooing]

You know, everyone
knows I love my cousin.

-I got you, Chris, I got you.
-Yeah.

[Chris] But, he's
a pain in the ass.

[Jim] And let's just say we
learned a thing or two the hard way.

What the [bleep] is this?

Captain Jack plants,
burnt to a crisp.

[Jim] I killed the
Captain Jack plants.

Then I killed Danny's
special Colombian plants too.

-[Dan] How come they don't look...
-[Jim] Alive?

Because they're dead.

This farm had major problems.

We need to start
from ground zero.

We have to rip out the
six existing hoop houses

and we need to rebuild.

[Jim] We built four
state-of-the-art greenhouses

and they came out beautiful.

We were making some
of the best cannabis

that Oregon had ever seen.

36.88% THC.

-[laughing]
-Wow.

Off to dispensary.

I mean, it was flying off
the shelves everywhere.

-Hey.
-Hey, how you doin', Jim?

[man] Whoa!

[Jim] And just when I thought
things were starting to go my way,

shoe drops!

-[police siren blaring] -[over radio] We
were on scene of a medium sized farm.

[officer over radio] We
got heavy fires showing.

[Jim] Our vault, the
heart of our farm,

which also happened to
house all of our cannabis,

mysteriously
burnt to the ground.

-We lost everything, man.
-Everything is gone.

[Jim] It was devastating.

Emotionally and financially.

[Dan] We lost
$500,000 facility there.

Really was, was
devastating to Jim.

[Jim] You know, I'm
starting to wonder

if I've bitten off more
than I can chew.

[theme song playing]

[Chris] Good morning,
Jim. How are you?

[Jim] I'm having a struggle.

The morning meeting is our time

to talk about both
business and personal stuff.

It's sort of our, our
special time together.

It's supposed to have this look.

Number one: This fire.

No answer yet,
still investigating.

It's arson, you know,
they wanna make sure.

The fire was
devastating for our farm.

It could have been a hater,

could have been
a competing farm,

could have been
organized crime element.

Could've been.

Chris.

[loud explosion]

We've got 450 plants
in there growing.

We've got 10 outdoor plants.

They're all ready to get
harvested in two weeks...

-All right.

We have nowhere to dry it,

we have nowhere
to trim it. It's a crisis.

We have this issue right now

about salvaging
what's been planted

and finding a place
for it to dry and cure.

I know.

-I'm pushing the emotion back.

-And bringing the reason up front.

Chris is panicked
about not havin' a place

to take our new
harvest is substantiated.

Where are we with the expansion?

Oh, God, Jim. Everybody
keeps reaching out.

We've got so many people
that wanna partner up.

We got East Coast
Cannabis in Massachusetts,

Green Stem and Highway
Horticulture in Michigan.

I'd love that.

We did a couple of expansions
last year and it went well.

You know, there were
some hiccups along the way,

but we ironed 'em out.

It's time to move on now.

It's time to look at the
national play for us.

Maybe even
international at some point.

We have 10 strong
possible options.

Ten? 10's a lot.

Each one of 'em have
different regulations.

[Jim] That's why we'll
just take it nice and easy.

One state at a time.

I love this plan.

Jim generally does
not agree with me.

But we talked about
moving slow, right?

Take it a step at a time.
And he agreed with me.

That never happens.

I don't believe him.

gonna narrow down

the 10 opportunities we have.

And then we can decide
which ones you wanna start with.

I know I said, "I'd slow down."
I did, I said, "I'd slow down."

But, you know, I get a 30 day
turnaround to change my mind, right?

doesn't make me an ass.

You make a decision, you
live with it, you process it.

Then you change your mind.

I got nothing left on the list.

[Chris] Really?
You've been yappin'.

[Jim] Look at
that big-ass truck.

That's gotta be Simon, man.

-Jeez, it's been a while, man.
-It's been a little bit.

[Jim] Yeah, lots is going on.

I love Simon. He's been
in this cannabis business

way before it was legal.

He knows all the players and
he knows how things operate.

[Simon] I saw the
destruction on the way in.

I'm sorry to hear
about the fire.

It's just things. Nobody
got hurt, you know.

Have they come up with
anything at this point?

Well, I don't know
what started it.

[Simon] When Jim's
barn burned down,

immediate just
shock and depression,

and then you start runnin'
through your mind of,

"How could that have happened?"

I don't know, but
the criminal activity,

in general, in
Northern California

and Southern Oregon, there's,
there's a long history of it, isn't there?

[Simon] When you
take into consideration

what we're known for here,
what we grew up in here,

lot different than the criminal
elements that you have today.

The, the organized
crime that's here,

it's wrecking those
multi-generational families

that have been here for the last
50 years that have been doing this.

Oregon and Northern California

have a very rich history
of illegal cannabis growing.

It started in the
'60s and the '70s

when the hippie
culture was in full swing.

And the cannabis culture
became mainstream.

And these cannabis farms
were very small operations

run by families, run
by little communities.

And they had to hide in
the mountains from the law.

We know them as legacy growers.

They're small
mom-and-pop operations

that've paved the
way for guys like me.

Cannabis became
legal in Oregon in 2014.

And these illegal
legacy growers,

a lot of 'em came into
the legalized market.

And some of 'em did not.

Those growers,
they were the ones

that lived in fear of
being imprisoned.

They were the ones
hidin' in the mountains,

but growing beautiful cannabis.

Some of the best I've ever had.

What they're doing is illegal.

-Sure.
-But their heart is in the right place.

Their heart is in
the right place.

Opposed to the organized crime.

Their heart is only in the cash.

They don't care what people
in America are smoking.

The '80s and '90s,
The '80s and '90s,

they were growing illegal
cannabis in Mexico and shippin' it up.

But, once it became legal here,

uh, the laws were
a little more relaxed.

Organized crime just
came into California

and came into Oregon
and just expanded.

Law enforcement
stepped up their efforts

to stop these illegal
organized crime growers.

But, you can't stop 'em.

You shut one down,
they jump to another farm

and intimidate the
owner and grow there.

And when I say organized crime,

I mean just what is sounds like.

[emphatically] Organized crime.

Dangerous people.

They'll use pesticides, they use
slave labor, they carry weapons.

They force farmers to
grow cannabis for 'em

against their will.

These aren't people that are
passionate about cannabis.

They're passionate about making
money in any way that they possibly can.

They don't care
about our environment,

they don't care about our
streams, our groundwater.

They don't care about our soil.

[Jim] Last year,
three miles from here,

they busted two warehouses

which could've been
sprayed with pesticides

that contain metals,

contains everything
that's bad for the body.

Here, locally, when they
bust some of these farms,

there's evidence
of human trafficking.

There's evidence of
fentanyl distribution.

There's evidence
of running guns.

Anything and everything
that you can imagine

making money on in
a criminal enterprise,

these groups do all of that.

I think maybe I pissed
'em off and they're,

showin' me, uh,

-"Shut up, Belushi." You know?
-[Simon] Mmm.

-I don't know, Simon, but...
-Let's cross our fingers.

There's maybe five different
organizations in this valley alone

that are growing illegal cannabis
and sendin' it all over the country.

[yells] Don't tell on
'em, 'cause if you do,

they could burn your barn!

Look at how happy
these girls are.

These are the girls
I'm worried about, Jim.

[Jim] I know we got two weeks

and we're gonna
do it. Stay positive.

The clock is running.

You have about a week window
that you can stretch harvest.

At 10 days, we've stretched
it past the week window.

You go much farther than that,

everything starts to decompose.

If we don't get this next
harvest hung, cured, dried,

we could lose another
$500,000 worth of cannabis.

Now, a dryin'
room is exactly that.

It's there to dry, cure.

Like you hang your ham or
beef, or we hang cannabis.

The environment has to
have the right humidity,

the right temperature.

There can't be any leakage,
their can't be any moisture.

I know Jim hates
when I use adjectives,

but it's a huge problem.

Nowhere to dry.

[Jim] Hey, we got the R&D barn.

Why don't we just convert the
R&D barn to, like, a mini vault?

We can put three rooms up

that can handle
three different cycles,

and we can have all
the trimming done there,

we can have the
bucking done there.

It's not even finished yet.

We're gonna build a
nice little barn for you girls.

We gotta get it out of the
field, out of the greenhouse.

We're runnin' out of time.

dearest friend to me.

I love him with all my heart.

He was my co-star in According
to Jim for eight seasons.

He came to farm
last year for lunch

and then never left.

-[Larry] Oh, thank you.

I don't have many gifts.

Except that people love me,

and they like to be with me.

They think that I
am a ball of energy.

I make them feel better.

They fall in love with me.

But other than that, I don't
know what I bring to the table.

[heavy machinery beeping]

-Havin' a good time?

that'd be quite nice actually.

I betcha a lot of people think
I've been up here a long time.

It wasn't the intent.

I wanted to come up
and, and lend a hand.

Chris needed a lotta help.

I think I know what's
been going on at the farm.

[sniffing loudly]

It's fear.

I look around, each
one of your eyes,

I see you guys are terrified.

And it's okay. A
barn burned down.

-I get it.
-Larry, what's going on?

Just trying to help if I can.

All right, guys, listen, I
know you're all concerned

about the vault bein' burned.

We're gonna take care of you.

With a fire like that, well,
the staff is concerned.

So, to reassure them
was very important for me

and very important
for them to hear.

Now, if you're really
worried about security,

I think I'm gonna put Taro
out on the farm a little bit more.

If you see somebody that
you feel is questionable,

all you have to say
to him is, "Watch."

And the next
word is, "G-E-T I-T"

[whispers] Guy comes
creepin' up on the farm,

and then you
say, [yells] get it!

[struggling] That's
it! Get it! Atta boy.

And he will hold that arm

until he is released.

-[loudly] Okay, you win.
-[Taro growling]

So, anybody wanna try this?

-Just for fun?
-Yeah, I'll do it.

[Jim] Larry, why
don't you try it?

Chris, he seems
really threatened

that I'm gonna steal his job.

[clicks tongue] I
don't blame him.

I'm gunnin' for Chris.

He's just stayin' in the
game too long, you know.

It's like watching an old QB
throw his last interception.

-This goes in your right hand.

[phone ringing]

Oh, my God. This
is Jenny. Hold on.

[Taro growling]

My former wife, Jenny, called.

She heard about the fire.

And she's concerned
about Jared's safety.

right in the middle of a safety meeting.

This farm is the safest
place in the world.

[shakily] Um, I just
saw my life passing by. I,

I started to weep
thinking about my kids

and how I didn't
say goodbye to them.

I was cheering for Taro
all the way. I love that dog.

Agh, I think it
went well. [panting]

-[wind chime ringing]

Oh, by the way, I got divorced.

Because we don't
know who started the fire,

but my former wife
thinks it may have.

I got the feeling that my dad

doesn't really want me to leave.

This is the best summer
I've ever had with my dad.

It's been the best summer.

looks as beautiful as can be.

But the inside is... This is
like the emperor's new clothes.

We just need some direction

on what your final
use is gonna be.

[Jim] Dave Hammonds
is a good friend of mine.

He is a great builder,
general contractor.

He knows everybody
in the county.

And when you need to
get something done like this,

he knows the buttons to press.

Jim is delusional half
the time on price and time.

Every time I get
a call from Jim,

he wants it fast and cheap.

And I said, "You
can't have both."

What we're gonna
need, are really strong

environmental controls.

We gotta put HVACs up here.

Yup, HVAC goes up there.

When this vault burned down,

it make me sick to my stomach.

We give each other [bleep]
back-and-forth all the time,

but I love Jim to death
and I'd do anything for him.

So, we got three
different rooms.

So, instead of making each
room a genetic testing room,

we'll just make these rooms
drying and curing rooms.

The environment is perfect.

Did you tell him how
much time you have?

Jim thinks this stuff is easy.

This would typically
be a two-month project,

and we're expected to
get it done in 10 days.

This originally was set
up as an R&D building.

Totally different
for a drying facility.

So, there's a lot of
things we have to change,

even though we still
have a shell of a building.

A drying room needs
optimal temperature,

humidity and
airflow in this thing.

The drying room
requires HVAC system,

new plumbing, new electrical.

Dry wall, insulation
to seal the room.

There's just a whole
bunch that goes into this.

Jim's a son of a bitch. He
does this to me every damn time.

-[Jim chanting] R&D barn come!

discuss a plan B.

We could run into
problems. It may not happen.

[Dave] We're not done yet.
We still have a lot of work to do.

[Chris] Jim promised me,
we'd take one state at a time.

potential partner today.

Jim wants to fire away

and go 1,000 miles
an hour and do it now!

We've been through this
Jim, we've talked about this,

moving too quickly.

Great state. I mean, they
got the Patriots and all that,

but besides that,
there's 24 million people

that are a two-hour radius
in the New England area.

Maine wants us, Michigan
wants us, Pennsylvania.

My father said,

work where they want you, Jimmy.

Otherwise, one day
they might not want you."

That was 50 years ago that he
told you that. It's different now.

There's lot involved to, to, to
launching in each one of these states.

I have experience in growing.

I was in the
restaurant business.

I grew a 13-unit chain.

I mean, I did one a year.

One a year!

[in normal accent] I love my
cousin. He's a scaredy cat.

He won't even risk
bendin' over to tie his shoes.

If you don't seize
the opportunity,

if you don't take your
love and expand it,

that opportunity
could disappear.

Like the barn disappeared.

This is a decision that we
need to make collectively.

This is not a
two-minute decision.

It's a very difficult
time for him right now.

The wife is gone. Jared's gone.

welcome to Ask Jimmy!

Today, we're gonna learn
about the infamous term, 420.

Where did it come
from? What does it mean?

The real story,
kinda like Goonies.

But with cannabis.

In 1971,

there were a group of five
teenagers at San Rafael,

nickname, the Waldos.

They were stoners.

One day, the Waldos got their
hands on this little treasure map

of an abandoned cannabis grove.

They would meet at
Louis Pasteur statue

at 04:20 once a week.

They would smoke up a little bit

and search with this map,

looking for this
abandoned grove.

-Never found it.
-[audience sadly] Oh!

I know you're
probably wondering,

"How did a small group of Waldos

get this term to become an"

[voice echoes] "international
term for cannabis?"

One of these Waldos became
a roadie for the Grateful Dead.

[mockingly] He would talk
about his 420 days and the map

and how they never found it.

Well, they kinda liked
the stories, you know?

The Grateful Dead were so
excited about that term, 420,

they used that term as
their secret code to say,

"Let's go smoke, 420."

They didn't wanna
walk around going,

"Hey, man, you wanna go smoke?
Hey, man, you wanna get high?"

[whispers] "420? 420.

420? I'll meet you at 04:19."

So, the term, 420, just kinda
rippled across all of these crowds.

And now we know what 420 is.

[Jim] It was me.

Where this positive battery

-...was rubbing on this sharp edge of the side by side.

And enough heat
generated, starting on fire.

And that spread to the
rest of the side by side.

Well, that makes sense then
'cause then this went up and

it burned the awning.

[Mark] So, that
awning held in the heat,

which was wood on the bottom,

and just pushed it
towards the barn.

And it started the wood
siding on the barn on fire

and then spread into
the rest of the barn.

The fire started outside.

-Yes.
-That's why I thought maybe somebody threw a

Molotov cocktail or
something that started it.

And those are things
we don't rule out.

We use our expertise
and our knowledge

based on fire-pattern evidence,

to really determine
what the cause and origin

of that fire is.

And the scene remaining

gave us the ability to
look at all that evidence

in a pristine condition to
really narrow the fire down.

This fire was
probably started by

the arcing battery
cable on the fire wall.

that we are gonna expand
across the United States now!

-[cheering and applause]

had the meeting,

everybody and announced it.

We are going to sweep the South,

go through the Midwest,
the Northern States.

I'm pushing the emotion back,

and bringing the
reason up front.

We're gonna spread
the word of cannabis

and the healing properties.

-[applause]

He's got this crazy
thing right now

of staying busy and you know.

He's lonely and this
is his solution now

to get busy in the business,

and make, make bad
decisions and move too fast.

He's insane.

Risk! I am magnificent.

I am not gonna make myself
smaller for the small people

so they aren't frightened.

We're gonna expand.

That's right.

I'm gonna take a grove
in Illinois, Mississippi,

Maine, Massachusetts,
New York, Pennsylvania,

Michigan, Oklahoma,
South Dakota, Colorado,

Arizona, Nevada, California,
and of course, Oregon.

Hell, why stop here?

Maybe we'll go international!

[yelling] I am gonna
create so much drama

that I might have to smoke this
whole damn thing just to sleep.

[Chris] This season

[Jim] We are gonna expand
across the United States.

Just because 10
girls wanna date you,

doesn't mean that you
have to be a polygamist.
