I was just expecting
a nice birthday weekend,

maybe like a couple
arguments.

I wasn't expecting that.

It was something
I've never seen before.

There it is.

And if freaked me out.

The noises all around us
it felt like.

Guys.

I just panicked.

It's coming for the cabin.

We wanted to go places
where most people didn't go.

It seemed like something

didn't want me there,
it was terrifying.

The fear hits you like a wave
and takes over.

I wanted to scream.

That's just not supposed
to happen in the woods.

My name's Debbie Robinson.

It took me by surprise
completely.

I don't ever think
I've ever been that scared

in that moment.

I've always wanted
to go to Hocking Hills.

Are you guys excited?

- Can't wait.
- Yes.

So my daughter, Alyssa

and her best friend,
Tenyjah, said,

"Let's book a cabin
for Hocking Hills

for your birthday."

My name is Tenyjah Thomas.

Debbie's daughter Alyssa
is my best friend.

I've never been in a cabin
in the woods before,

so I knew it was gonna be
like really peaceful

and really fun
and all that stuff.

I drove
with Alyssa and Tenyjah.

It's scary out here, man.

And my other son, Colin

and his best friend, Matt,

were in Matt's car.

My name is Matthew Roder.

Debbie is
my best friend's mom.

The cabin we stayed in,
it was pretty much like

in the middle of nowhere.

It was deep woods like,

it's just woods everywhere.

To get to the cabin,

it was a very scary driveway.

And then finally you get up
and then you see

your big cabin sitting there

and just looked all spooky.

Oh, wow.
Look at this place.

We're here.

Finally.

But we were very excited

to get away.

Whoa.

This is nice.

The only thing that we were
a little skeptical about

is all the windows
had no curtains.

So it's easy to see in.

So that was the only thing
I remember thinking, "Uh-oh."

You had that feeling
that someone's watching you.

Who wants chips?

- Oh, yeah.
- Yeah.

Thank you.

- Thanks, Mom.
- No problem.

Happy birthday,
by the way.

Thank you.

That night was great.

Everybody's just, like,
joking with each other

and we were having a good time
like we always do.

Who picked the cabin
right out of a horror movie?

- Oh.
- Thank you very much.

Wait, what is that?

What?

- Ha!
- Jesus, Matt.

There was no worries
on the first night at all.

And then Friday,

that's kind of when things
started changing.

Did you guys sleep well
last night?

- Passed out.
- My man.

Nice.

Whoa.

There was this
horrible smell.

It's smelled like wet dog,
but also like a dead animal

and then, like, feces, like
just all bad things combined.

That wasn't here last night.

Yeah.
It keeps coming and going.

And I thought this
could just, you know,

stinky from the, like, mud

or dirt or something.

The mud?

From the rain last night.

But it wasn't that.

I think it might be something
coming from the woods.

It just was like in the air.

It was so weird.

We couldn't figure it out.

During the day,
they all went on a walk.

And I was
just chilling outside.

- Got you!
- Oh, my God!

- Stop doing that!

Oh, my God, I got you so good.

That whole day, I was messing
with people the whole time.

When Alyssa
was taking a shower,

- I would knock on the door.
- Who is it?

Like there's ghost
in the house and stuff.

- Boo!

That's why I thought
everybody was gonna try

to get me back that night.

All right, everyone.
I'm gonna head up.

- Goodnight.
- Me too.

Yeah.
I'm just gonna finish this.

- All right. Good night.
- And I'm like,

"Yeah. There's no way
I'm gonna be able

to fall asleep."

- Hey, Matt. You staying up?
- Yeah. Just for a bit.

Okay. Shut the door
when you come in.

Thanks for letting me swap,
sweetie.

No problem.

Guess I'm the only one
brave enough to sleep

- in the downstairs room.

I didn't like
being in the main room

downstairs by myself.

I just didn't feel
comfortable.

Goodnight.

So I went upstairs

with Tenyjah.

I kept hearing
noises behind me.

It sounded like maybe,
like, something

fell out of the tree.

Sounds like a pretty big
scary monster out there.

I'm really scared.

I felt like it was a game,

because I was messing
with everybody a lot.

So I thought, you know, "Now,
it's time for them to get me."

You guys are really scaring me
with this stuff.

But, no one was talking back.

They're not laughing.

The bush like blew up.

Something jumped on this bush

and then the birds
just took off.

They were all like...

- ...flying everywhere.

I could feel
that something's out there.

I was terrified.

I'm panicking
because I don't know

what's going on here.

But I heard something
in the cabin.

I was thinking like,
"Yeah, there's gonna be

someone messing with me

and it's gonna be
a funny joke,

you know, they got me good."

Well, everything was closed
when I ran inside.

No doors open, not a sound.

Nobody running through
the house to hurry up and hide

or get back in bed real quick.

So that's why I blocked
this front of the patio

off with the chairs
because I was like,

"Well, if someone's
out there..."

I ran upstairs.

And the door banged open.

And there was Matt with...

Just scared out of his mind,
he looked like.

Who's messing with me?

What are you talking about?

He thought
that Alyssa and Tenyjah

were outside messing with him.

What about Colin?

Colin's been in bed for ages.

Then he realized
that it was none of us.

There's somebody outside.

Matt is not
a type of guy at all

to just be scared of anything.

Okay. Let's go see
what's going on.

So I got up and I wanted
to go down there

and investigate
what was happening.

That's when I first knew
that Matt was really scared

because he blocked
the stairs.

Boy, something
really spooked you.

And coming out
of the woods back there,

- I saw this black thing.

Over here.

And we see this creature.

It was crawling.

The moon was really
bright that night,

so it lit up
the entire back yard

but only good enough to where
you could see the figure

but you couldn't see,
like, details of it.

What is it?

I don't know. Bear.

Look at those shoulders.

Its shoulders were really,
really broad, really wide.

I was terrified
because my body knew

it was something different.

It stood straight up.

He was huge.

Taller than any human.

It was something
I never seen before

and it freaked me out.

And it just started walking
on two legs like a human.

It's coming towards us.

And that's when I started
freaking out.

Whatever it is,
it's coming for the cabin.

It was getting closer
and closer,

like, walking towards us.

I was terrified
and I can't move.

I don't wanna take
my eye off of this thing

to know what it's gonna do.

I was just ready to scream.

And it stopped

and got back into crawling
on all fours.

And then all of a sudden
he just went right back,

like disappeared right into
the deepness of the woods.

I'm gonna go get the others.

Bounced away from the window,

ran and woke up everybody.

Alyssa! Colin!

Because I knew
it was out there.

I thought that,
"Okay, well maybe it's,

like, scared of us."

We should go out there.

We heard noises
to the right of us.

But you could tell
it was not a human.

It sounded like something

none of us had ever
heard before

and it was freaking us
all out.

It sounds like
it's coming from over there.

And all of a sudden,
it was super quiet.

The downstairs door slams.

- There! He's right there.

You could see
something that zoomed by.

There.

I was scared.

I was, like, panicky-scared.

Everybody was just looking
at the front of the cabin.

But I kept hearing
something behind me.

Something kept
taking a couple steps.

And every time
I would turn around,
it would stop.

Footsteps getting
closer behind me.

Guys?

There's something
on that side too.

Shh.

It felt like there was
at least two or three

of whatever that was
that was stalking us.

The one up front was, like,
trying to distract us

while the other one
would sneak up behind us.

I was expecting
something to pop out
at any moment.

And then the noises

that started coming
all around us it felt like.

There was definitely
more than one there.

You know,
everywhere you looked,

it was so active.

I felt surrounded.

Alyssa's like scared to death.

And then all of a sudden,

everything stopped.

Not a branch, nothing.

Everybody's looking,
no one knows,

you know, what's going on.

But you're not thinking
at the time of anything else

but just to watch
and just to keep making sure

it's not coming towards us.

We were out there
almost all night.

I did not feel safe
until 4:00 in the morning.

I'm gonna check where that
thing came from last night.

As soon as the light came up,

my son was determined
to go out,

make sure it's not, like,

people messing with us
or something.

Alyssa!

Alyssa! Come back here.

So they went in that area
where we heard
all that noise.

Whoa. Look at that.

That thing is huge.

And that's
what the footprint was.

Yo, there's another one.

I wear a size 12

and this thing
made it look like

I have a woman' size six on.

I've never seen
anything like that.

Oh, my God!

It's huge.

- Yeah.
- Let me see.

Was it just the one?

Oh, no, there was
a big trail of it.

Everything that I saw, heard,
and then the footprint,

I was like, "That...
It had to be a Bigfoot."

Can you believe this?

Can you send me a copy?

Sure.

And I was just shocked.

Still am shocked.

I was very relieved
to finally leave the cabin.

I absolutely do believe
in Bigfoot now,

it completely changed
what I believe in.

And it terrified me,
it scared me.

I cannot wait
to get out of here.

I still love
getting together

with my friends and family.

I still wanna do all that.

But I don't want to be scared
like that again.

I was just expecting

and then it really
actually happens to you.

This isn't something
out of a scary movie,

like, this is real.

We wanted to go places
where most people didn't go.

It seemed like something
didn't want me there.

It was terrifying.

That's just not supposed
to happen in the woods.

My name is Jim Sherman.

This experience
created so much lasting fear.

It took away

a very important
part of my life.

I have always
liked the outdoors,

because that's just the way
I was brought up.

My dad took me out
hunting, fishing,

canoeing, hiking,
it was just amazing.

And so, when I went on
my trip with my dad,

after, I think,
my freshman year in college,

I was really excited.

It was this area in the Upper
Peninsula of Michigan.

You had to hike in,

and the further back you went,

the fewer and fewer
signs of people you saw.

And so we decided
we were gonna go

as far back as we could.

We wanted to go places
where most people didn't go,

and we found it.

We set our campsite
up on the top of this hill.

The sounds.

The animals everywhere.

And it was alive.

We built a big fire
and it was a cool experience

just to sit with my dad,

because my daddy
was a busy guy.

You know,
I was off in college,

and it was a real
neat experience,

just to have the chance,

even if we weren't talking,
just to sit back.

And I remember
I looked up at the stars,

you could see the Milky Way.

Everything
was just beautiful.

I think I'm gonna
call it a night.

All right.
I'll be in soon.

And you could hear
frogs, and crickets,

and whip-poor-wills,
animals everywhere.

But about a half hour later,
everything shut down.

There were no crickets,
no frogs,

and so it was just
dead silent.

I then kind of snuck in
to the tent.

My dad was sleeping.

I couldn't sleep.

Behind me,
I started to hear rustling.

And at first I'm like,
"Squirrel or chipmunk,

no big deal."

I heard some branches
kind of swishing

that seems a little
bit higher.

And I'm like, "Okay.
That's something taller."

And then I heard
branches snapping

as if it something
with a bigger foot,

like a bear
were snapping the branches.

My dad didn't wake up

when I could hear
branches snapping.

Nothing woke up my dad.

Frankly, he was
an exceptionally
deep sleeper.

It started coming
closer and closer.

I'm like, "But that's not
walking like a bear.

I've heard bear walk."

It got closer,

closer to the front
of the tent.

Until I could hear breathing.

I felt this rush of cold

and it was the most
unpleasant feeling.

I couldn't move my arms.

Almost as if invisible hands

were making it
so that I could not move.

It was terror.

I wanted to scream,
but I couldn't.

I saw something probably
twice the size of my hand

press up against
the back of the tent.

It was terrifying.

I was running this
through my head.

I'm like, "Maybe I'm dreaming.

Maybe I'm dreaming,"
but I wasn't.

All I was thinking
was I wanted it to go away.

It felt as if I hit
a very big hand.

Whatever it was,
made a noise.

Not a bear, not a deer,

and it didn't rush away
like a bulldozer

through the forest
like a bear would do.

It turned around
and sounded bipedal

as it walked back.

Dad. Dad.

I tried to yell.

My dad told me it sounded more

like a whimper
because that woke him up.

- What's going on?
- There's something out there.

- Is it a bear?
- And I said, "I don't know.

I have no idea what that was."

Just go back to sleep.

My dad was my hero.

And I didn't want him
to know I was scared,

so I had to be tough.

So I had to gut it out.

But it was scary.
No question about it.

It was scary.

- You want coffee?
- Yeah, sure.

The next day,
I asked my dad, I said,

"So last night,
what do you think that was?"

And he said,

"I really think
we were dealing with a bear."

Maybe you should've
come out of the tent,

made some noises
with some pots and pans.

I thought he was
thinking I was being weak.

And so what I decided to do
was face that head-on.

And so what I did
is before we went out,

uh, fishing that day,

I raked away all of the
leaves behind the tent,

so that
there was a whole bunch

of regular Earth
that would leave a footprint.

What are you doing back there?

I am building a trap.

And then,
because I'm a history major,

and I've watched
a lot of war movies

and things like that,
like I sharpened sticks,

and I stuck them
behind the back of the tent,

because if whatever was gonna
come back was gonna come back,

I was gonna teach it a lesson.

The rest of that day,
we fished, had a great time,

and it went
to the back of my mind.

I didn't think about it
until it started to get dark.

Pretty good job on the fire.

- I'll give you that.
- Oh, yeah.

- She's working.
- Yeah.

- Did you hear that?
- I'm sure it's nothing.

And then the thoughts
started to kind of creep back

into my head that there might
still be something out there.

So that night,
I built a really big fire.

That gave me
a sense of safety.

My dad went to bed early,

and I just sat
next to the fire

and animals were making
noises so I'm like,

"Okay, as long as I can hear
frogs, everything is fine."

And when the animal sounds
went away,

that's when the fear
really crept in.

So I went into the tent,
I brought my hatchet with me.

You could actually see...
Out through the tent,

you could see
the fire was still burning.

But I was filled with dread

going to bed
on the second night.

About a half hour in,

I heard the footsteps again.

But this time
it was different.

I could hear it
coming closer to the trap.

But whatever it was stopped
well before it got there.

I didn't want my dad
to know that I was scared.

So I didn't wake him up.

It took a sapling

and started swishing it
back and forth.

And this thing's
just going

back and forth,
back and forth.

It seemed like something
didn't want me there.

And it walked
around the back of the tent.

It started throwing things.

A bear can't throw things.

My dad didn't wake up.

It was unbelievably
terrifying.

There was something smart
out there,

specifically targeting me
and trying to mess with me.

That's just not supposed
to happen in the woods.

I felt that whatever it was,

was aggressively
almost toying with me.

The minutes
stretched into hours,

big bipedal steps,

snapping big branches.

I wanted to wake my dad up.
I couldn't.

I still can't explain
why the terror

froze me like it did.

It was just a horrible
sense of powerlessness.

And it seemed as if
I just blinked for a moment

and then I opened my eyes
and it was light out.

It was this unbelievable
sense of relief.

You know, I've been waiting

for the sunlight
because the sunlight

means I'm safe and I made it
through the night.

But I left there
with more questions

than I could answer.

Couldn't have been a deer,
it wasn't a bear.

And I had a whole bunch
of what it couldn't be.

But I didn't have
what it was.

It was a pretty
traumatic experience.

It became like a phobia.

The fear hits you
like a wave and takes over.

My job for the next 10 years

was putting it out of my mind.

I didn't wanna think about it.

During the daytime,

I never had to worry
about it.

But I tell you, the moment
it started getting dark,

I started
to get scared again.

I couldn't stop the darkness
and I couldn't stop the fear.

Both were coming
and I couldn't...

I couldn't fight them.

And I quit hiking alone.

And I quit going out camping.

I just didn't like
to be alone in the woods

if it was going to be dark.

There were 10 years
in between that incident

with my dad and the next time

that I really attempted
to go deep in the woods.

You can't live
your life scared.

And I figured, why not
go out looking for Bigfoot

and maybe
I won't be afraid anymore.

And so
that's the reason why

I go out in the woods

and I try to collect
audio evidence.

I have audio of wood knocks
in various parts of the woods

that are obviously
responding to one another.

I have audio
of very big things growling.

I have howls.

And the more
that I researched

the legend of Bigfoot,

the more that I researched
the science,

the more that I spoke
with people

that had had
similar experiences,

it's like
a little button clicked

and I moved from being afraid

to being more intrigued.

Right around the year 2012,

I received some audio
from a couple

who lived in the central part
of Michigan.

Something in the woods
was making a lot of noise.

So I said I'm gonna come over

because I need
to hear this myself.

It's about midnight.

I'm hiking deeper
and deeper into the woods.

So I stopped,
heard a couple of knocks.

I heard
this sing-songy kind of howl,

but it wasn't a bird,
and it was over here.

And then I heard a response

a little ways away.

And so there were two
of whatever was out there.

It's almost
like they were doing

this weird leapfrog
echolocation thing.

I gave it
to some of my buddies

who are former military

and their jobs
were audio analysis.

What they have found

is that it had the equivalent
of a fingerprint

of a sound
that has been attributed

to Bigfoot around the country.

I would say
that the experience

camping with my dad
changed my life.

I was afraid of something.

It was a phobia.

But I beat that phobia.

And now I wanna create data
that might prove something

that happened to me
so many years ago.
