Last week, a relatively unknown band
sold out London's 7,000 capacity

Alexandra Palace purely on the strength
of word of mouth.

Seemingly, Manchester's Stone Roses
have overnight made the leap

from promising cult band to the hottest
musical phenornenon of the moment.

REPORTER: Their first album
sold more than a million and spawned

an army of fans in flares
and baggy T-shirts.

But after that hugely successful debut,
there was silence.

The Roses became embroiled in a dispute
with their record company.

MANI: It was just horrible
to have created all that momentum

and get to the top of your game
and then have

the rug whipped out from under your feet.
We were injuncted

for two-and-a-half years.

We should have got a paper round
or a job in a sweet shop.

We just ended up sitting about
or rehearsing and stuff.

There was no outlet for us.

MAN: It's been six years
since there was new material.

REPORTER: There's been a lot
of speculation over the last few days

about live dates. I wondered
if you could tell us what your plans are.

Our plan's to shake up the world.

You know, we're gonna go round the world
next year

and we're gonna start off
in our home town, Manchester,

and we're gonna play two bigs...
two big gigs at Heaton Park.

End of June, June 29, June 30.

And then after that, we're gonna
take it round the world.

Colin Paterson, Radio 5 Live. John, two
years ago, you made that artwork saying,

"I've no desire whatsoever to desecrate
the grave of seminal Manchester pop group

"the Stone Roses." What's changed?

Um, well, everything changed when me
and lan started seeing each other again.

It was surreal. We went from...

crying and laughing about the old days

to writing songs in a heartbeat.

It completely changed me outlook

and made me think it was possible,
it might even be enjoyable.

And that's turned out to be the case.

It's...

In some ways it's a friendship
that defines us both and it needed fixing.

And two phone calls later,
the band was no longer dead, so...

there is no grave.

This is a live resurrection
that we're inviting you to,

so you'd better be careful.

Bones of an impressive romance

Scattered all across the sand

JOHN: We didn't hang out
together at school.

Our relationship formed
after school, through music.

Virtually everything we did together
was related to music.

IAN: We used to make
our own scooters, yeah.

We weren't mods, but we used to go
to Northern Soul all-nighters.

We used to make our own choppers

and bone down scooters,
used to go all over, yeah.

That'd be '80, '81.

JOHN: I think I was 14,
and when I heard God Save The Queen

and realised how electric guitars
could be made to sound,

I started pestering me dad for a guitar.

Got a paper round, started hanging around
guitar shops on the way home from school.

I think it was the next Christmas,
actually, er, I got the guitar.

I can remember sitting depressed on the
windowsill in me bedroom, no amplifier,

picking me way through
Three Blind Mice on one string

and wondering how long it would take.

MARK: I haven't got a remote control,
so I didn't bother with me telly.

SHANE: Mine, erm...
Yeah, I think they assume in my room

that you're gonna sit on the floor
to watch telly.

MARK: Mm.

Cor, that day I got that phone call.

God, yeah.

- We were going to Dinard, wasn't it?
- Yeah, I was in a taxi.

The taxi dro...
Cos normally I'm really paranoid.

You know when you're in a train
and you're talking

and there's people on there
that don't care

and they talk so loud,
you wanna punch their faces off.

But this taxi driver was, errn...
just heard everything

and I was like a two-year-old,
like, half crying and that in the car.

You know, it's not very often, is it,
that one of your heroes rings you

when you're going to a film festival

and asks you to make a documentary
about your all-time favourite band

that are getting back together
after 20 years?

- Is it this one?
- It is this one. God, it is.

IAN: I'm in Hulme, it's 1983,
and me girl's just had a party. She's...

She's 21, and, um, a kid called Glen
that used to work with New Order,

he brought Geno to the party -
he'd just played Salford Tech.

- INTERVIEWER: Geno Washington.
- Geno Washington, yeah.

IAN: And during the party,
Geno keeps telling me I'm a star.

"You should be a singer, you're a star."

And I'm like, "What's up with this old
guy?"Like, you know, he's on me case.

He just kept saying it to me all night,
"Be a singer."

He kept saying, "Be a singer.
Go for it, be a singer."

V0ICEOVER: The influences fermented.

Geno Washington's advice was taken
and the Stone Roses were formed.

IAN: And Pete Townshend was at
the first ever gig that we ever played.

He says,
"Oh, you look great up there on stage."

He did a little spot
and he wanted Reni to play with him,

so our first ever gig,
Reni jammed with him at the end.

He says to Reni,
"I want you for me solo LP."

Reni's like, "No, these are me boys."

JOHN: We loved doing it, you know.

Loved being together,
loved playing music, you know.

Stinking, beer-sodden cellar.

IAN: I'm back, what about town, town.

IAN: We all write all our music.
It's all joint effort.

We just get in a room,
and just play along and bash it out,

and at the end of the night,
we've got a decent song.

We write about our friends

So, there's no inspiration from anybody
who's written anything.

But we like a lot of '60s music.

- Yeah.
- Erm, '60s psychedelic stuff.

We like a lot of early punk stuff,
so we try and combine the melodic...

you know, the melody of the '60s stuff
with the energy of the punk stuff.

We're not a punk band
and we're not a '60s band.

We're just an '80s band.

MANI: I met them via the scooter scene
of the early '80s.

Yeah, well, they were mates
and I used to go watching 'em.

I kind of always had an inkling

It was just a matter of biding me time.

IAN: Mani joined about 0ctober '87

and we did Elephant Stone,
and it had a groove.

And Mani was an important part of that.

Him and Reni locking together
gave us a groove.

on recording the first album,

right old adventure into London
with John Leckie and all that.

They were quite special times, cos we
kind of knew we had... we had something

what was in our minds and get...

and how to get that onto tape, and, er...
It's a wonderful journey

just to... just to see it evolve, and it
becomes what it becomes, you know.

We're not that interested in the band,

that people cite as an influence
in years to come,

or would you like to be like that?

Hopefully people will form groups
as a result of seeing us.

How do you feel when you see people
walking out of one of your gigs?

Depends what they look like.

If they're dressed well
then I'm a bit disappointed.

If they're a clown then I'm not bothered.

Well, don't you get hurt by people
who don't like you?

Do you think everybody should like you?

JOHN: I don't expect anything.

Yeah, but you say... you all say you expect
to be the best band in the world, so?

No, we know that we are.

We don't expect anyone else to think
anything in particular about us.

They can think and do what they want.

Well, if you're the best band in the
world, why aren't you number one?

Because the record isn't out yet?

Why wasn't your last single number one,
and why wasn't the album number one?

It takes time for people to get,
you know... acquainted.

But it's inevitable.

What's that?

It's the original graffiti artist
called Vaughn Bode.

He did, like, a series of, er... books
called Erotica, and all erotic cartoons.

And his missus just got the rights back
after 30 years.

I think he died about 30 years ago.

I dunno. He's the one that inspired all
the New York graffiti artists and that.

NEWSREADER: Gary Mounfield,
John Squire, Alan Wren and lan Brown

arrived at Wolverhampton Crown Court
to a noisy greeting from about 30 fans.

They admitted taking part in a revenge
attack on the Wolverhampton offices

of FM Revolver
and their former manager, Paul Birch,

after he re-promoted an earlier single.

Photographs show
they poured paint over three cars,

threw a stone through a window of one,

tipped paint onto the floors
and over Mr Birch himself.

The damage has been estimated at
£27,000.

Sentencing the four, Judge Michael Mod
QC

said he could understand
their indignation,

but he said what they'd done
was, on the one level,

immature to the point of childishness,
and extremely destructive on the other.

He said he'd considered
a custodial sentence

but felt this would only lead
to their notoriety

and ultimately be of benefit to them.

INTERVIEWER: How big do you think
the Stone Roses will get?

that there's a free gig
that the Stone Roses are playing.

Their first gig in 20 years.

And they're playing it here for a few
of their very close friends and family

and about a thousand people

It's weird, cos when they first announced
that they were coming back,

they announced the Heaton Park gigs,

um, but I think once the band
started rehearsing,

they realised that, in a way,
they needed a warm-up of some kind.

And so this, for me, has become
the all-important gig, really,

cos I suppose any genuine fan
is gonna wanna be at that first moment,

you know, and I wasn't a trendy kid
from anywhere near Manchester

when I was a kid,
so I missed all the really cool gigs.

I just heard cassettes on mates'
record players in flats in Uttoxeter.

I was never at any of these events,
so for me tomorrow, this is kind of...

In a way, it's like my Spike Island,
potentially, tomorrow.

Everything that I missed
I can make up for all in this one gig.

I just obviously can't quite believe
that it's happening.

Me and me husband went,
well, 21 years ago,

and I was pregnant with me daughter,
who wants a ticket.

to the Alhambra Palais a few weeks later.

So, er, last night was Amsterdam

monitor problems on stage

basically didn't want to put the thing
back in his ear

cos he was getting loads of distortion

and, obviously, there was 5,000 people
who knew that they'd, er...

done an encore in Barcelona and were
expecting an encore, so it wasn't pretty.

Er, I was meant to be going
to Sweden and Denmark,

I think, and Germany till Sunday,

but we're canceling that

and, er, obviously the last thing
anyone wants at the moment

is a camera ramming in their face,
cos things are, erm...

tricky and, er, the atmosphere's
not very nice, obviously.

I've just seen the manager
and he says Reni wants to go home home.

So, this is gonna be the end
of my, er, European stuff

and just fingers crossed everything works
out and they get back on for Heaton Park

JOHN: I'd hate to paint the picture
that we had a great time

then we made a hit record and fell apart.

It didn't happen that way.

The making of the second album
finished the band off, in a way.

It was never the same after that.

MANI: Basically, it was all down to that
having to take all that time off

and a lot of things happened
that were out of our control -

ie the court stuff
and getting injuncted

and not being able to be together
and record.

And, you know,
we give it our best shot after that

and it wasn't...
it just never was the same.

0nce you've lost that momentum,
it's hard to regenerate it.

J0HN: I mean,
in the process of extricating ourselves

from the Silvertone deal

we found out that a lot of money
had gone missing

and the finger pointed at the management.

So, we tried to get rid of
the manager as well.

And then whilst making the second album,
we were kind of lost at sea.

We didn't have a proper business
manager, any sort of management, really.

IAN: There's four little chiefs
with a two million dollar advance.

There was no-one to give us that kick up
the arse that we needed at that time.

MANI: We always said, you know, as
long as we're enjoying it, we'll carry on,

but I think we rapidly began
to not enjoy it.

It's when it became more about
the business and less about the music.

Because we were like
one of the toughest little gangs in town.

We'd hang about and we lived it.
We used to work for eight hours a day

and we were round
each other's houses at night.

And as soon as other dynamics come in,
like having children and stuff like that,

you're like planets that are moving
slowly away from each other, you know.

The dark matter that holds you together
is becoming fragmented and...

and you're off.

JOHN: Doug Goldstein got involved,
Guns N' Roses manager,

and the band were a little bit unsure
about whether to go for that or not.

I know lan and Reni had a row about it.

I know he came to me and Mani

and said that Reni had quit
the night after this big row.

And he said that he wouldn't work with him
again anyway.

This was a couple of weeks
before the tour was due to start.

And I could see in Ian's eyes that there
was no turning back from that point.

And I think that was really
the last nail in the coffin for the band.

IAN: But leading up to that, there was
a big build-up leading up to that.

You, know Reni was going AWOL.

He wasn't turning up. He came to me
one time during the recording,

come in and said, "You three
should get yourself another drummer."

You know, he said, "I don't wanna be
any more famous than I am.

"I want you three to go and smash it

"and have the satisfaction
of watching you smash it."

And that was about eight months
before he left. So, it was in his mind.

JOHN: I just...
I didn't see any future in it,

other than a kind of... treadmill,

trading on the past.

It didn't fire me
with any sort of creative enthusiasm.

I knew it would be final...

...because our relationship
was related to music.

So, to take that out of the equation
by leaving the band...
