Britain is a divided nation.

The cost of basics like food and
power have gone through the roof,

and it's hitting the poor
a lot harder than the rich.

But is money the key to happiness?

A family and two friends

living at opposite ends
of the wealth divide

are about to find out.

The Macharaga family
are really struggling.

Dad Innocent puts in long shifts
six days a week

as an NHS mental health nurse.

Sometimes I see him leaving at 6am.

I won't see him again till 10:30,
11 o'clock at night.

Despite working so hard,

a low wage means the family of four
can hardly pay the bills.

I think disposable income
is about 70-something pounds.

Self-made entrepreneur Lisa made her
money out of the property business.

We work on regenerating empty spaces
and empty shops.

Her passion is for super cars,
and of course, they're pink.

I've got three super cars.
The McLaren 600LT is around 280,000.

For one week,
Lisa and her best friend Alisa

are swapping places with
the Macharaga family, and budgets.

That's gonna be really tough
to live on that for the whole week.

They're also swapping lives...

People are looking at me
like I'm some sort of celebrity.

...to discover whether money
really does buy happiness.

Bridgwater in Somerset is where
you find the Macharaga family.

Local girl Holly's 31,
and her husband Innocent is 34.

We've been together since May 2020,

and we've been married
since October 2020.

Innocent's originally from Zimbabwe.

Three years after
he arrived in the UK,

the couple had a whirlwind romance.

So, we have Albert living with us,
which is my son,

and we also have Malachi,
who is our son together.

Something we do that's fun is,
like, going to a park

and pushing Malachi on the swings.

Life's not been easy.

The family's had a tough time
finding accommodation.

We became homeless.

We ended up moving into a holiday
let, which was extremely expensive

and took everything that we had
and we'd worked for.

Then their luck changed.

They were offered an affordable
house by a local landlord,

and it couldn't have come
at a better time.

It's the best house
we could've ever dreams for. Mm-hm.

It's amazing,

and I don't know what we've done
to deserve it.

Innocent works for the NHS,

but despite doing long hours
as a mental health nurse,

there is little to show for it.

It brings a lot of burden on me

because I know, as a man,
I need to provide for my family,

and at the same time,
I don't even have time for them,

time to sit down
and enjoy life with them.

Holly used to work for the NHS, too.

She gave it up because the family
couldn't afford childcare

for little Malachi.

The cost
of getting to and from work,

I'm left in minus.

It's not worth it.
I would rather stay home.

The family is left with a disposable
income of less than £80 a week.

My income is the only source
of income in the family,

and it's not enough
to meet our needs.

They manage to scrape by,
but only just.

In the past, things have got so bad.

I mean, we've visited food banks,
my mum has transferred us money

because she's worried
that we're not eating.

Money's so tight,

they've done nothing to the house
since moving in.

There's nothing on the walls.

There's nothing to say
that a family live here.

Family photos are still in a pile
on a table.

And that's really sad
because you see people's homes,

and they have pictures
of their children everywhere.

Despite the hardships,

a deep Christian faith
helps them get through.

They even give to others.

Charity work is very important
to me and my family.

Despite not having much ourselves,

we create little care packages for
children who don't have anything,

things that they might need
for school,

pencils, pens, a little toy.

It's not much
because we don't have much.

So, if money was no object,
how would it change their lives?

It's always been a dream of mine to
own something such as a restaurant.

Holly's a great cook
and knows how to do it on a budget.

She makes meals in bulk and
batch-freezes them for use later.

I would love to start somewhere
small and just get my feet wet.

Someone who might help Holly make
a start is Welsh businesswoman Lisa.

My name’s Lisa,
and I'm from Cardiff.

I work in the construction industry.

Locals know her as The Pink Lady.

What they don't see
is her serious side.

My company Pinkspiration

aims to inspire young people
and transform communities.

We work on regenerating empty spaces
and empty shops.

There are more than 380,000
empty spaces all over the UK,

so we really wanted to bring
some of these spaces back into use.

Lisa's never followed
a conventional path in life.

I did obviously have
some Barbie dolls to play with,

but there was much more
interesting things for me to do,

such as I was sat there one day,
I was watching the F1 on TV,

and I thought, "I really wanna be
like Lewis Hamilton."

Financial success means
she can indulge her obsession

for fast cars.

I've got three super cars.
The McLaren 600LT is around 280,000.

The Ferrari is just under 100,000.

And then there's
her little run-around -

the pink Porsche.

It's something
I've always been passionate about.

What started as a hobby
has turned into another business.

From her pink-themed coffee shop,

she organises super car events
for the super-rich.

We're hoping to turn it into the
UK's number one super car hotspot.

Lisa will be joined on the swap
by best friend Alisa.

Her dog Fabio
will be staying behind.

Yeah, we met through our love
of pink, didn't we?

We seen each other and sort of
started chatting about pink,

and then we became friends

and realised we had lots in common
as well.

I love basically being a role model
to help inspire other people

that they can make a positive

about the swap

and just letting them see
how we live.

to seeing

how they got to where they were

And what do they buy from you?
Holly in particular likes her beef,

so she buys, like, lean chuck

so Holly's very switched on,
she's a very good cook.

She knows what she's doing.

She might buy more
than the average family,

but she would make that amount last.

Two packs of meat were £10,
and he was telling us

that if you, you know,
go in and batch-cook

then you can save a lot of money
and time.

They had £76 spending money
for the week

and have spent almost 40 on
ingredients for the batch-cooking.

The rest of the week
could be a struggle.

Day three, and Holly and Innocent
are going to Lisa's business HQ.

They're meeting her partner, Leon,
to find out how she made her money.

So, what is it
that you guys actually do?

She had a business
or she's still got a business

training up, skilling women
and girls into construction.

She done it with a couple
of hundred pound, really,

bought a second-hand van
and just went from there.

We built up the branding
with the pink vehicles and things,

we just continued the colour
onwards.

After establishing
her construction firm,

Lisa branched out
and founded a super car club.

With over 450 members,

it's the biggest super car community
in Wales.

It even has its own coffee bar.

Oh, wow. So, come on in,
this is the super car hangout.

Holly's dream is to own
her own cafe,

so Leon's more than happy to put her
to work and see if she copes.

Feeling a bit nervous
about my shift.

It's been a long time
since I worked in hospitality,

I chose building a family life
and building a family unit.

so it's sort of the construction

and the cars sort of fell

Every single thing to do
with the business

ultimately is driven by her
and her inspiration,

otherwise the business wouldn't be
where it is,

so she goes out and motivates

and things like that,

working in healthcare is easy.

So, you're dealing with people that,
you know, they're walking around,

talking to themselves,
erm... laughing to themselves.

You know, sometimes,
they can just stare at you,

erm, in a way whereby
you might feel intimidated.

It's mentally challenging.
There's no switching off.

The only time you switch off
is when you leave that ward.

So, what kind of hours
does Innocent work?

Long hours, and
I'm not just putting emphasis on it,

it is really long hours.
Yeah. You know?

Are you constantly putting
in extra shifts in work

to try and make actual money?
Yes. Yes.

Things have always been tough,
and things will always be tough.

Sometimes,
he doesn't get to see Malachi,

cos he'll come home,
Malachi's asleep.

my family closer together

and realised we have something

Christmas Appeal, we're
just about to launch into that.

For us, it's one of
the biggest events in the year,

so two years ago, when we started,

we did toys for 350,
just over 350 children,

and we did food parcels
for about 150 families.

Last Christmas,
we did 500 children parcels

and we did food for 200 families.

What are the biggest challenges
at the moment facing families?

I think the thing
that's really hit me,

and the most noticeable difference,
is it's people who are working,

so people who've actually got jobs
and got an income,

but because costs are going up
so much, they're really struggling.

It's really, it's quite shocking,
really, isn't it, that...?

I think it surprises
a lot of people. Yeah.

I think it's really shocking in the
21st century in the United Kingdom,

that we are actually seeing
this kind of, you know, poverty,

people struggling, and they're
finding it really difficult to,

you know, do day-to-day things.

That was a real eye-opener.

After spending a morning
on the super car drive-out,

Holly and Innocent
want some quiet time.

They're visiting the luxury spa Lisa
uses when she needs to chill out.

was amazing.

Over the week, young mum Holly

has discovered that her family
is what's most important to her.

that money can't buy.

It's the end of day five,
the last night of the swap,

and in Bridgwater,
the cupboard's bare.

So I got the last of the budget
on our chips.

Oh, lovely. At least
we had enough for some chips.

Oh, I know. It was a really tight
budget, wasn't it, this week? Yeah.

I found it a really big challenge.
Yeah.

When I first saw that budget, £76,

I thought, "Oh, my God,"

and, like, they were feeding
four people on it, wasn't they,

like, two adults, two children?

But I didn't even think
you and I'd survive on that.

It's been a bit of a roller coaster
ride, hasn't it? Absolutely.

It needs something like this
for people to realise,

cos we wouldn't have realised
how bad things are.

And what are Holly and Innocent's
thoughts

on their last night
living in luxury?

I think this week has shown me that
we spend far too much time apart,

and, er...

that maybe we need
to make more time,

where possible.

I know it's difficult at the moment,
but we need to find a way.

It made me realise that I've been
missing a lot of precious moments

just by being away.

No matter what money we have,

I think the important thing
is that we're all together

and we're all happy and healthy.

Ee-ee-ee!

Day six, the final morning
of the swap,

and Lisa and Alisa

are having trouble cramming their
clothes back in their suitcases.

Packing's a simpler task
for Holly and Innocent,

but they've got other worries.

I think it's going to be
difficult for me

to adjust back to our lifestyle.
Back to normality.

Cos I'm used to spending
1,200 a week,

so how am I gonna live on 70 quid?!

You can't.

I'm really excited about
meeting Holly and Innocent today.

I think it's gonna be
a really nice day.

Halfway between the houses, they're
meeting up to talk things over.

Having lived each other's lives,
it's a chance to share stories

to be able to start up a business,

even if it's just to give it a go,

from a week living on a budget?

Do we now think that
money buys happiness?

I never really thought that money
bought happiness, to be honest,

but it does create opportunities
and access to different, you know,

things, like,
whether it's super cars or hobbies,

it does create an opportunity
where you can do those hobbies.

It allows you the freedom
to do what you want.

And what about Innocent and Holly?

It's nice to be home.
It is. What a week.

Has a week with no money worries

changed the way
they think about life?

Money doesn't buy happiness,

but what it does do
is give you time as a family

and time to rest,
and eases a lot of pressure

so that you can make memories
and enjoy time with the family.

It is good to be home.
