A lot of pressure on them, to be honest.

The halfway point is where we really crank the pressure up,

Because we're essentially trying to emulate war.

And war keeps becoming more stressful, more horrific,

More tiring, more exhausting,

And that means there is no room for complacency.

It all looks tiny from up here.

...To face the most demanding exercise of selection so far.

Not my favorite roller-coaster ride.

Being an alpine skier, for me it was the coolest thing.

It was raw speed, power, risk.

I think I have less fear than most people.

You're fatigued.

You're gonna have to set that to the side.

We're ramping it up. We're gonna be relentless.

[narrator] the recruits have been brought to this extreme location

To attempt the commando cliff crawl.

Using a single rope,

They must move across a deadly ravine.

The commando cliff crawl is absolutely by far

The most difficult thing

These recruits could have ever imagined doing.

It looks easy when the ds demonstrates,

But I guarantee you when you're up there,

If you do not apply the skill and technique, you will fail.

Pull yourself forward. Hands are in front.

The crook of your foot and your ankle will be a guide.

The other leg is your counterbalance.

[narrator] once the recruits reach the halfway point,

They must then tackle the regain.

For anyone that is scared of heights,

This is probably one of the most petrifying things

You will ever do.

You are attached to a rope at 200 plus feet.

If that goes wrong, you won't get a second chance.

[rudy] once you get the command from the ds,

Swing the leg back up

And mantle yourself back to the center of the rope.

Turn around, recruits.

We're 4600 feet from sea level.

You're heart's gonna be pumping

To get that oxygen to the muscles,

But ignore the pain, ignore the pumped-out arms.

We never quit.

No matter what it takes, we accomplish the mission.

If I hadn't taken the risks that I did,

I would have never won a race.

There's frustration given off by you

When we're delivering instruction.

The only times where I really get [bleep] up

Around authority is like when I think something's not fair,

And I feel this, like, trigger in there

Where I'm like, [bleep] that, you know?

[foxy] the world that we come from is unfair.

We have had to deal with very difficult people,

With weapons, and we are in their backyard,

And we literally have to bow down

To the unfair approach that they're taking

To make sure that the situation we're in

Doesn't spiral out of control.

I think it's something I identified.

I don't have the first [bleep] perception

Of how to hide it, or that's... I wouldn't...

I know how to deal with it internally,

But it's just some ego thing or some competitive thing

That I just have in there still.

What was it like competing at that level?

I was just relentless. I just didn't stop.

Not, like, necessarily trying to, like, hurt myself,

But, like, like, hard, hard training.

How old are your kids?

My daughter's the oldest at 15.

Then ten, eight.

Our daughter that we lost would have been six.

What... What happened with your daughter?

She drowned in our neighbor's pool.

I was with my older daughter at softball.

Honestly, I hadn't thought of that,

That my being away for that,

At another kid's sport thing,

Is... Like, could be some [bleep] weird routing

To why I'm so tentative around, like, encouraging my kids

To wanna pursue something that way.

Getting back to this course, you are doing well.

But your attitude, you've got to try and keep it in check.

About the way that I act towards them

That I can understand and I'll try to be more aware of.

I will say, it crossed my mind for the first time.

They're looking for the right moment to give up.
