in this '89 Indianapolis 500.

Danica: Are you kidding me?

Man: I just don't think we're
going to see anything out of her

as a driver anymore.

Man: When are you going to
win your first race?

Man: This is the best day
of my life.

I've dreamt about it.

I'm just so proud of her.

She knows she's under pressure.

Man: She's got tears
coming to her eyes.

Danica: Racing is what I do.
It's not necessarily who I am.

Man: Danica Patrick is now
a household name.

She may have changed
this entire sport.

Man: All right. Nice job.

[ Deep breathing ]

Danica: I've done yoga
since I was, like, 19,

but I didn't do it for quite
awhile when I was in my 20s.

It's only been the last, uh,

oh, three? Three years

that I've started
doing it again.

I've always been good at all
the, like, poses themselves,

but it's getting
into the handstands

and all that stuff
that took awhile.

I have become much more positive
as the years have gone by.

And I'm just over worrying
about things so much.

You can't have the family
and the job and the respect.

You can't have it all.

It just doesn't...
It's not possible.

The best you can do
is try and, like,

when you see something needing

a little bit of balance,
you pull it in.

And then you go this way,
and you pull it back in.

And you just try
and keep it flowing.

You just try and keep
your head on straight

and you keep doing things
that serve your soul

and that make you happy.

And at the end of the day,
if you're happy,

then who gives a crap
what anybody else thinks?

Until you can do things
all the time,

you only do them sometimes.

And sometimes,
you just don't have it.

I think that's the interesting
part about yoga

is you have to accept the falls.

Like, you might not like
what I have to say,

but at least you can go like,
"Oh, man.

That's what she thinks.

Like, I respect her honesty."

Why do people care about me?

I don't know.
I don't really know --

other than
they must sense my authenticity.

Mom:
Let's see your pajamas, Danica.

What?

Look at your mom.

No.
I'm not going to talk.

TJ: I was pretty much
a workaholic.

So I was never home.

I'm getting a new job
unloading trucks.

So I knew we, we needed
to spend some time.

The kids were getting
old, they're 8 and 10.

Danica: [ Inaudible ]
We're all going to the beach!

TJ: Come on, babe.
Let's go to the beach.

We're going to the beach!
See you later!

Danica: We were going to buy
a pontoon boat.

That was their first thought
of what we're going to do

on the weekends
to spend time together is,

we're going to buy
a boat and go out on

the Rock River in Illinois.

And thank goodness
that guy didn't call back.

Brooke: We grew up watching
racing, the Indy 500.

We went to midget races
when my dad raced,

so it was always something
we were interested in.

I told my dad.

I was like, "I think I want
to race go-karts,"

and Danica didn't
want to be left out

but was interested
enough to agree.

Danica: I'm not mad.

TJ: Danica was more
of the prissy one.

I mean, Brooke was wanting
to race gung-ho.

And Danica says,
"Oh, well, I'll try it."

I do remember the first time
I drove a go-kart,

and that was a disaster.

Mom:
Oh, tricked you, Danica.

You let her get ahead that way.

TJ: We would put paint cans out
in this parking lot.

Brooke was actually faster
than Danica, passing her.

And I left the cotter pin
out of the brake pedal keyway.

So she went to a corner
and had no brakes.

[ Indistinct shouting ]

Danica: So the pedal fell down
to the ground,

and there's no way to stop
the go-kart anymore.

So since I'm 10 and I'm dumb
and I don't know what to do,

I went straight instead of,
like, turning or spinning out.

I'm like, "Oh, my God.
What am I going to do?"

And I hit a concrete wall head
on and my arms go flying back.

My arm, like,
lays on the exhaust

and burns my cool,
like, puffy jacket.

Her coat was smoking on fire,

and I thought I'd killed
my kid already.

And...

So, that was the very
first time on a go-kart,

and she got back in it
the following week.

I bought a new go-kart,
and we put one together.

We raced the next week.

Man: Driver number 10,
Danica Patrick. [ Inaudible ]

Danica: We sucked at first,
like, terrible.

TJ: Tough race. We'll have to
have luck on our side.

We'll give it our best shot.

Brooke: My dad always had
the mentality

of everything is possible.

How can I make her
go-kart faster?

How can we make this work?

He is a dreamer and a
long-vision type of person.

Mom: Son of a bitch.

Quit.

Brooke: I used to beat her.
I'll brag about that.

That's okay.
We were getting lapped.

I was just getting lapped
a little less.

TJ:
And after about a week or two,

like, it was just flip-flopped.

Brooke: She, all of a sudden,
wasn't getting lapped anymore.

And then it was like, "Oh,
we're actually winning races."

[ Radio chatter ]

TJ: Halfway through the season,

I had her tune
a carburetor on a go-kart

where most kids don't do that
until they're 15 or 16.

She was 10.

Man: Okay. Danica is your
winner, number 10.

Danica: That was what started
the love,

that challenge of going faster
and getting better

and, you know, mentally had to
discipline myself to go faster.

Man: Danica is really off
to a country-mile lead here.

Bev: She learned really early
on that she had to think

when she was out there.

She could go to the 100th
of a second

lap after lap.

Other kids
were on the fence going,

"How can she go so fast?"

Man: Good job, Danica.

Danica:
And I continued to get better.

So I kept going.

I mean, I was winning by
the middle of the year,

and I almost won
the championship.

I got kicked off
the cheerleading squad

because I was gone
for racing too much.

Woman: All right, Danica.

Danica: When I was 14, I won,
like, everything.

I mean, I won 38 out of 48 races
I was in that year or something.

Like, I just won everything.

This is Danica Patrick,
the early years here.

Bev: We'd go to the track,
and everybody go,

"Oh, there's the girl.
The girl."

Man: Well, I want to get
your autograph for my daughter.

Danica:
I can get used to that.

It wasn't really until I
started doing interviews

that I felt like,
"Oh, I guess I am different."

TJ: I never told her she had
to be the fastest girl.

I told her she had to be
the fastest person.

Just like any sport,
you see some kids,

and they stick out.

And she was one of those
that stuck out.

She's going to change
racing, I think.

I said that when she was 10.

I don't think I was
quite as optimistic

as he was as far as
making a career of it,

but it was pretty evident
that she had a lot of talent

and was going to go forward.

Danica: MTV came and filmed me
at my high school.

ABC came to film a program

called "Passion to Play:
Making of a Champion."

As far as I'm concerned,
I control what I do,

everything I do.

It's all under my power.

And it was awesome.

And there are days I wish
I could just go back to '96.

I wish I could go back to '96
sometimes, but I can't.

But '96 also put me here.

The smaller you cut things,
the faster it cooks.

I have mutilated my hands
on this microblade.

It is the sharpest thing ever.

My starches come from
potatoes and squashes.

That's a lot of no's.
No oatmeal.

No toast.

I mean, I eat everything
from eggs to...

I think today I'm going
to have some bison.

I like a variety.

This takes awhile.

Here's the thing, I like
things crunchy and crispy.

I have to wait.

I mean, I lived
in England by myself.

And then I just like cooking.

It's artistic.
So, you know, I like cooking,

and cooking and art are all
in the same vein, I feel like.

So when you live alone, you kind
of got to figure out

how to cook for yourself.

I was extremely committed
to success and an end result.

And I wanted to keep going.
And I wanted to keep winning.

And I wanted to
see it through.

And when I was 16 and had
the opportunity to leave home

and go to England
to race, I did it.

TJ: That was an easy decision.

Bev: It really was.

It was one of those
opportunities

that we had taken her
as far as we could.

She got this chance
to go to England to race.

And that's sort of the Mecca,

especially for all
the young drivers.

They go over there
and race all year round.

And it was hard to see her go,

but it wasn't hard
to let her go.

Brooke: When we dropped her off
at the airport, you know,

she's got her,
like, 15 bags.

And, I mean,
we were basket cases.

Mom, Dad and I,
we were just like,

"Ah, what are we
going to do?"

She was like, "See you."

I don't get emotional
about that stuff.

If I'm going to win
the Indy 500 someday,

I got to do all this.

And I'm happy to.

I was 16 to 19
when I was there.

I was very lonely.

There were tears, or whether
it was the weather.

All the same.
Gray and rain.

Those are done.

That's how they need to be,

super brown.

Murdered.

All of the other drivers,
which were guys,

they just weren't very nice.

It kind of started showing up
that maybe being different

was not so great, like,

because I was a girl
and American

and, you know,
boys were asses.

Man: And here comes Danica,
both arms and fists

punched up into the air
in celebration,

and a very unhappy Mark Taylor.

Danica: Of all the dark days
and things,

awful nasty things
that came from England,

I met Bobby Rahal.

Bobby: Racing in England
was like a alley fight.

You know, you've got young guys
from all over the world.

It's pretty much dog eat dog,

but that's what
makes it so good.

I mean, that's what makes it...

If this is what
you really aspire to,

whether it's road racing,
Formula 1,

Le Mans, IndyCar,
that's where you should go.

But the fact that she was there,
that impressed me

because it meant to me that she
really wanted to succeed,

that she was willing to kind of
make the sacrifices

that you have to make.

Woman: And as far as studies go,
have you given that up for now,

or you're still
studying at home?

Danica:
No. You know, I'm completely
dedicated to the racing

and really, really,
really want it to work.

So I've given, you know,
I gave up the school.

Bobby: All great athletes have
to have a little bit of that

chip on their shoulder,
you know,

that I'm going to show you.

I had never really
seen that

in women drivers before that.

I mean, frankly, and somebody
will probably tell me

I'm being sexist,

but she had an attitude
like a guy in a girl's body.

Announcer:
We have a slight delay.

Danica: I think male competitors
can be intimidated by me.

When I go quicker than them,

they're going to obviously
think that I'm nothing,

and I'm just an another
American girl.

I mean, I went through karting,
and they'd sort of go,

"Oh, stay away from her,"
like they were scared of me,

but I've obviously got to
work up to that respect here.

This would be
my normal breakfast.

I'd sit here.

I'd turn my phone
on to entertainment,

which is also known
as Instagram.

There we go.
I'd go to my stories.

And then I just start
watching them like it's TV.

I didn't race every
single weekend,

and even when I did,
I was gone for a few days.

And then I would have days
and days --

Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday,

with nothing to do.

Hey, dog hair.

But as boring
and lonely as it was,

I also started learning
about eating healthy,

started learning about cooking.

Oh, this is a fun thing to do
on Instagram, too.

They call it yolk porn
where it's, like, soft,

and you go like this.

I mean, it is kind
of good, though.

My parents said when I came
back from England,

I was so much more
guarded and cold.

So, it just was...

It was just awful.

Very character building.

That was good growth for me.

A couple years,
I was just learning

how to be my own best friend

and how to let go,

and, so,
then you're not needy.

You know, you're not reliant on
somebody else to make you happy.

It's just...

And then you become
more attractive, too,

because you're happier.

Like, you're already happy,
and then they make it better.

So, I think it's
a valuable lesson.

That's what my wo-man cave
is all about.

[ Reverberating ]

It's kind of loud, right?

They, like, orient
with your chakras.

And anyway,
it's super hippie, but...

I have stones and rocks.

And they might be nothing,
but they were just, like, stones

I got at some points in time
that seemed important.

Palo santo smells good, and it's
cleansing of negative energy

so got a bunch of it.

Bobby:
This was probably early 2002.

She was coming back
to the states,

and her tail was
between her legs,

maybe the success she hoped

she was going to have
and didn't get it.

She seemed to be a little bit
of a shadow of her former self.

Fragile, I think,
is a good word for it.

She was going nowhere fast.

I mean, wheels were
just spinning.

There was nobody
calling her up saying,

"Hey, come drive our car."

Danica: "Power Thoughts,"
so, like, I just do, like,

a "Power Thought" dip
and just go like this and go,

"Whatever I am guided
to do will be a success."

I like it.

One of the things that I did
when I came back from England,

because I didn't have a ride
because I didn't have a sponsor,

and I didn't have a team,
and I didn't have a job,

my dad and I would go walk
around the racetrack

and ask people
if I could test their cars

to show them that I was capable.

I see Bobby, and I put him
on the spot.

TJ: She goes, "Are you going
to hire me or what?"

And Bobby looked over
at his CFO and went,

"I'm hiring her.
Let's put it together."

There was no sponsors
onboard at that time.

I mean, that, you know...He took a leap of faith.

Bobby did.He did.

Wow! What, like, cosmic
orchestration that was.

Doesn't everybody love
to cross things off a list

or check a box
so that you could go,

"Done. I did that work"?

Because everybody just loves
to check things off,

so I look at it
from time to time

and remind myself
of what I still need to do.

For the most part,
I wanted to have this be open.

Even "namaste" means, like,
the divine in me sees

and respects the divine in you

so just lots of, like,
positive words, positive.

There's so much negative
in the world.

You got to have positive.

Bobby: We had no money.
We had no sponsorship.

We had nothing.

Everybody thought I was nuts,
you know,

and they didn't think
I was nuts 2 years later.

Bev: We were married in 1980,

and he was going to go to
the Indy 500,

and he goes,
"But it's no place for a lady."

1980.

I wouldn't let her go because
it was, you know, it's just...

How ironic, right?

Yeah.

Man: Rookie sensation,
number 16,

Danica Patrick.

I think it was more something
that hit home for, like, my dad.

TJ: I've been going to
the Indy 500 since '74.

And then to have your kid
in it, you know...

Woman: Lady and gentlemen,
start your engines.

Man: The green flag is out!

Let the chase begin!

Bobby:
I think the 2005 Indy 500

will always
be highlighted

by the ascension
of Danica Patrick.

Man: Danica Patrick is earning
her racing stripes right now.

Danica: Had a crazy race.

I mean, I stalled it in the pits
and went from somewhere

in the top five-ish to the back

and then climbed my way up
to somewhere in the top 10.

Restart at the end
of the race happened.

I don't know what happened.

Again, all this crazy
cosmic orchestration.

And I cycled to the front.

Man: Danica Patrick has
moved out into the front.

It is Danica Patrick leading

with Dan Wheldon
sitting in second.

Bobby: When she passed
Dan Wheldon

on the front straight,
the place went nuts, you know,

350,000 people
standing up screaming.

Man:
Danica Patrick, number 16,

leads the 89th running
of the Indianapolis 500.

187 men have done it,

and never a woman until today.

Bobby: The screaming from
the grandstands

overwhelmed the sound
of the cars.

I never seen that.

Man: Look at the crowd
just absolutely going crazy.

You know, they have not sat down
since the moment

that she's actually taken
the lead of this race.

Brooke: "Oh, my gosh.

She's going to make
history today."

Danica:
Everybody, say a prayer.

Bobby: Now, anytime your car
is in the lead in the Indy 500

with a few laps to go,
I mean, to be honest,

I don't care who's driving it.

You know, we have
a chance to win.

Man: Danica Patrick
as she has

slid back now to fourth place.

But in the end,
she proved she belonged.

Man: Her shot may be over,
but her story

will certainly be told
from days to come.

A fourth-place finish,
but you know something?

It's still amazing.

Man: Danica, you have completed
your first Indianapolis 500

with an outstanding effort.
What is the emotion?

I'm relieved.

I thought for a second
we were going to win

that thing at the end.

I knew I had a fast race car.

Danica:
Like, so crazy, just crazy.

Just about won the Indy 500
my first year

and that's pretty cool.

Kind of feeds the ego, too.

I mean, it feels good.

Man: We will definitely see
Danica Patrick

in the victory circle --
that was an unbelievable race

by a rookie.

TJ:
To finish fourth, that was...

Still, um --
it's still touching to me.

Bobby: That will always go down
as one of the great races

just because of her.

All I can say is Danica mania
just took off from there.

That's really when the
glass ceiling was broken.

The media interest just went,
like, went straight up.

I collect stupid coffee cups.

Some people collect coins.

Yeah.

I collect coffee cups.

After the Indy 500 in 2005,
my website shut down

because there was
too much traffic.

It was a really neat time,

and there was a lot
of opportunities coming up.

Bobby:
Her two teammates, she had Buddy
Rice, and she had Vítor Meira.

Now, Vítor had finished
second in the 500.

They had t-shirts made up that
said, "I'm Danica's teammate."

And the other one said,
"I'm Danica's other teammate."

Poor Dan Wheldon
wins his first 500,

and hardly anybody knew that.

I'll never forget
the next race,

they have an autograph
session at Milwaukee.

Andretti's drivers
all boycotted.

Danica: No one would have
anyone in their line

because they'd all be in line to
get my autograph.

Haley: I remember watching a fan
in the driver-owner lot walk up

to her coach and knock on it.
She got in the car.

I'm like, "Did you know
that person

who knocked on your door?"
And she was like,

"Oh, no. They
were asking for an autograph."

And I thought, "Well, that is
just really, really ballsy."

Bobby: She brought a lot of
people back into the sport

that maybe had left.

I wouldn't even say it was just
the interest of little girls.

You'd see people with Danica
shirts on 4 years old

up to, you know,
80 years old,

and it was just because here
was this great story,

and they couldn't
get enough of her.

Photographer: I like that sort
of walking thing you did.

Danica: I'm in articles and
photo shoots because I'm a girl,

and I'm like,
"Maybe being a girl is good."

I need to use it now.

Not just do an interview,
but now I, like,

need to use being a woman
in the capacity

that I can that a guy can't.

What's it look like at the top?
I'm just curious.

As far as form goes?No.

Just, like, how,
you know body looks.

Bobby: I think Danica,
to be fair to everybody,

is the first real package,

I mean, good-looking,
personable,

obviously good in a race car.

Danica: I feel awesome about
being a sex symbol.

It's somebody saying
that I look sexy.

Why can't we be determined
and athletic

and strong and soft
and nurturing and sexy?

Like, why can't we be
all these things?

TJ: I've had people
come up to say,

"How can you have your daughter
in a swimsuit in the magazine,

Sports Illustrated?"

I'm going, "It's a swimsuit.
Do you go to the beach?

Everybody goes to the beach.
It's no different than that."

I tell everybody
she looks like me,

and they all just kind of
look at me like I'm nuts.

Danica: Pleather and lace
and boots and hot rods,

it showed that even going that
far was, like, very helpful.

The exposure that was generated
because of being female

and using my attributes,
it works.

Take it all with a grain
of salt, y'all.

I never did anything that I
wasn't comfortable with, never.

My comfort zone perhaps
is larger than others.

You know it's funny, though.

In the echelon of things
that happened in my life

that made a big difference,

GoDaddy brought attention to me,

and if you're a story,

if you're on TV,
if you're in articles,

then you're attractive
to a sponsor,

which helps me
get a car to drive,

which gives me the ability
to show what I can do.

I'm going to write in here.

"This is me writing,

fake writing,
in the actual journal

I wrote all the workouts
for the book,

which is what we're
at the photo shoot for."

Even when you're reading.

Danica: I know because my
straight face is, like, unhappy.

Man: It's a song.

I can change it.

You know, I know at the track
I have this awful mean face.

It was this sort of like...

I didn't want people to think
that I was okay

with fourth or eighth or 10th.

I wanted them to know
that I was freaking serious,

and I was serious
about winning.

You know, I was there.

Like, there was lots of
top fives and poles,

and it just didn't
come together for me

for one reason or another.

Man: Look at Danica.

She is just furious,

stomping her feet.

Bobby: Danica has got a temper.

She wears her heart
on her sleeve.

It's that simple.

Her father is the same way.

They're very similar people.

Haley: The apple doesn't
fall far from the tree.

I hate to lose at anything.

It's either great or bad.

There's no in between.

Haley:
She is T.J. Patrick.

She is just a very
passionate, fiery person.

It's just part
of her personality.

However, guys do it
all the time.

All the time, but it's different
when she does it.

Man: Oh, she's not happy.

Danica: And I'm just "a bitch"
or "complaining."

But you know what? If a guy does
it, I think he's an asshole.

Dan Wheldon: She has a lot
of pressure, like I said,

because she has not won a race,

and, you know,
her teammates are.

So she's just being Danica.

She'll be fine
when she calms down.

Bev: She forgets that she's 5-2,
100 pounds.

If somebody makes her mad,
she is not afraid

to voice her opinion.

Man: I think she's walking down
to tell Mr. Briscoe

that she doesn't
appreciate what happened.

Danica: I don't think anyone can
teach you

to be confrontational.

I totally just am.

I have absolutely no problem
with honesty,

with being upfront
and also telling

someone when they're an idiot.

Man: Expect a helmet or maybe
a steering wheel

being thrown your way here.

Haley: When people find out
what I do,

they're like,
"Is she really a bitch?"

I'm like, "No."

I mean, does she have
bitchy moments?

Sure.
But they're all caught on tape.

Just because she's not
winning races

doesn't mean that
she's not a good driver.

She's held to a different
standard in my opinion.

Man: Here's the thing
about Danica Patrick.

Everyone talks about her
being a great race-car driver.

Man:
She needs to win something.

She needs to
win something.

Danica: I thought that if
I looked pleasant

that people would think
that I was content,

so I just looked miserable

because I was going
to be miserable until I won.

Haley: She was crying,
I mean, out of relief,

out of excitement,
out of probably all of it.

Haley: Having her parents there,
I mean, just busting with pride.

Haley:
I was just so proud of her.

I mean, you know, to all
the naysayers, like, screw them.

Welcome to IndyCar victory lane.

Danica:
It's a long time coming.

Finally.

Man: An incredible run.

You never have to hear it again,

"When are you going to
win your first race?"

Man, what a relief.

Haley: Gosh, I mean,
the monkey off her back.

Man: The weight of the world

is now off Danica Patrick's
shoulders.

Danica: I don't think winning
is the be-all end-all

of being successful.

I think it is
the easiest measure.

And that's why, like,
when I won in Japan --

I was always good
in an Indy car,

but winning is just
something very easy

for the casual fan to get.
They're like, "Oh, you won."

It wasn't the prettiest win,
but it was a win.

And I would have loved
to have had more,

but I'm grateful for that one.

And it was a big relief.

[ Cheering and applause ]

Tony: I was racing in NASCAR
and had driven

Indy cars in the past
but really wasn't around

the IndyCar scene anymore,
and this name

Danica Patrick
came up.

She was making such
headlines in the sport,

that it was real easy
to learn a lot about her

in a short amount of time.

It's a perfect scenario.

You have somebody that
you know has talent

and can drive a race car

that you can bring up
through your system

but also that's marketable
and attractive to sponsors.

So it's the perfect package.

Haley: IndyCar, her career there
just ran its course,

and I don't mean that
she couldn't still be

over there and racing well.

I just think that she was ready
to try something different.

It's such a bigger stage
on the NASCAR side,

and NASCAR seemed like
they wanted us there.

Danica: I didn't know what
a modern stock car felt like.

I had never driven it
on a big track.

And I didn't know.
I definitely never raced one.

So the question was, is like,

"Not only do I want
to leave this

because it's going really good,

but am I even going
to like this?"

TJ: I don't know if the writing
was on the wall,

but the viewing is better.

The money is better.

The racing is longer and harder.

She knew that NASCAR
was going to be 40 weekends

where IndyCar was 16, 18.

Danica: I'm extremely decisive,
totally.

I'm not a half-asser
because it's me,

and I don't want me to suck.

So I go all the way.

things about it

the Nationwide series.

We used to do rookie
meetings together a lot.

Anytime she would come in,
I would always get up

if there wasn't enough seats
to let her have a seat.

But she doesn't
remember, though.

He was always so nice to me,
and was not scared of me either.

He loves me.

He loves me not.

He loves me.

You've seen "The Little
Rascals" one time,

and that was, like, 2 weeks ago.

You don't think people

they were a kid?

I don't have to...

Did you know that came

Danica: Learning that he didn't
like swearing and drinking

all that much was
the first transition.

I was like, "Oh, gosh.
Shit."

I think that, that is such
a great balance for her.

Danica: I weigh enough to sever
a rope probably.

Ricky: When Danica and I
started dating,

she started just talking
about, like, quinoa.

And I'm like, "I have no clue
what this stuff is."

I mean, I ate Hamburger Helper
all the time.

She's really opened
by taste buds

to a lot of different things.

Tony: Their backgrounds
are totally different.

Their interests
are totally different.

Ricky likes to go
dirt-track racing.

And Danica will go
and be supportive of it,

but she's just not into it.

It's just kind of not her deal

and I'm not sure that
that's really Ricky's deal.

But I think it's a hard
scenario for her

because her boyfriend
is also a competitor

that she races
against that drives

for a different organization.

I mean, it's great to have
a relationship

with somebody that's
in the same industry

you are and has
the same passion you have.

I think there's
positives of that,

but I think there's
negatives of that as well.

Danica: When you were a kid
and you would jump off

the swing and land...

Yeah.You know, did you do that?

Yeah.
I'd do a backflip off of it.

Oh, gosh.

You didn't never do

Well, obviously,
I didn't do a backflip.

That doesn't
surprise me you did.

Danica: When we're on track
racing each other for position,

it's always one
of those situations

where I come up behind him
or he comes up behind me,

where you just kind of want
to, like, let them go on,

but then you also know
that there's a team watching.

And they're like,
"Don't just let a car by."

We race each other hard,
but we give each other room.

Just... nobody wants
to crash each other.

And we definitely don't want
to crash each other.

We've wrecked each other
a couple times.

There was two times
in particular.

One was him, and one was me
that was, like,

"We can't be doing any of this."

There was, I would say,
one race

that I didn't feel like
I did anything wrong.

She didn't feel like
she did anything wrong.

I was going to get
an "I'm sorry."

That was a quiet ride home.

But then I had a totally
dumb moment at Loudon,

and I remember sitting there
waiting for him to get back

because I think he got
back out and finished.

And I was like, "Oh, my God.
What am I going to say?

Oh, my God.
What am I going to say?

What is he going to think?
He's going to be so mad."

And so he walked in, and I was
just like, "I am so sorry."

And he's like,
"It's okay, babe."

And I was like, "Oh, thank God."

an unbelievable ability

to be competitive
against each other

and then also just
all of a sudden, like,

fall back into being normal,

like, boyfriend-girlfriend
stuff.

Danica: When you look at, like,
the unique scenario

that we're in of both
being drivers

and both wanting
our own successes,

and they're the same.

If I couldn't be happy for his
successes and vice versa,

then that's a pretty
cold relationship.

they're over at the barn.

There was a dog or wolf
or there was something

that ran out
from the barn area

just, like, in the middle of
the clearing where the pond was.

I did see our deer
the other day.

I saw about five or six.

I'll play hide-and-go-seek
with our kids

when we're out here at night

because I know you won't.

Ricky: We both like to beat
everybody on the track,

so that includes each other,

but we both want each other
to do well at the same time.

I have kind of always been used
to being the first woman

to do things in racing.

I've never been a history buff.

And in fifth grade,
I remember raising my hand

and being a total smart-ass
and saying,

"What's the point of
learning about history?"

Man: And knocked the boss
off the pole.

Yes. 196.4 miles an hour
for Danica.

You don't realize on how crazy

Danica: For me, it's really just
thinking about

having something
super cool to cheer for

and something that was
an emotional memorable day of,

like, a, "I remember
when she did this."

Tony: She is the first woman

to ever be on the pole of
a NASCAR race,

let alone the Daytona 500.

Qualifying for her
first Cup Series event,

which is the premier series
in NASCAR,

and she goes out and starts
the race from the pole.

That's a pretty cool deal.

woman to the green flag.

She's done it.

Danica: I get more excited
about I've led laps

at Daytona and Indy 500,

being part of that shorter

And so you're like,

we should do this
every week,"

but it's not that easy.

then winning in Japan

a couple years later,

going to NASCAR and getting

the high points.

I miss finishing better.

financial boost for the team,

in racing right now,

struggling with that.

With the position she's in,
she can't run in the top five.

To run 30th,
that's not where she...

She should be around the 10th,
the 15th, the 18th.

And for some reason,
they're not there.

Man: She's not the friendliest

Showing up to your job every
week when it's been frustrating.

I mean, I just --

I feel heartbroken
for her a lot of times

just because I'm like, "Damn, if
we can just catch a break."

Man: I don't think that

there's a lot of racing
left in her career.

of a rope with frustration

with her performance in NASCAR.

Danica: The new arrival point
for me

is pure effing honesty.

I don't really care
what anybody thinks.

I don't care
if someone hates me.

that I hate them.

I'm just going to be
totally honest

about what I think,
what's bullshit and what's not.

Maybe somebody watching or maybe

We make sure that everybody

has the same quality
of equipment

as the rest of the group
and the rest of the building.

That's something we take
a lot of pride in.

If we weren't doing that and we
weren't giving her the same cars

we were giving
everybody else,

we would be embarrassed
as an organization.

Bobby: You start to hear drivers
say, "Well, I need this.

Or I need that.
Or their car is better."

You know, you're always
looking for something else.

Danica: I'm not willing to go in
the shop every day

and build a car --
that is not my job.

I am not a gearhead.

I do not like to go to the track
when I'm not racing.

I don't care about cars.
I don't.

I'm just not a car person.

Bobby:
Self-confidence in a driver

is maybe the most powerful
component in racing.

And some of that confidence
is based on knowing people

are behind you,
that your team is behind you.

I don't really care
what people think.

I don't care if they think
I'm awful.

I don't care at all.

And so if something
happens in a race

that I think is a terrible
call, that's what I say.

[On radio] I mean, don't worry
about it, guys.

We just, you know, went
down a lap at the Daytona 500

because your information
was [bleep].

Bobby: You are the quarterback
for the team.

And in order to have
those people around you

really commit to you, go out
and take them out to lunch.

They're more than
just guys working.

Danica: I can shoot the breeze
with them for awhile, for sure.

And I do that every now
and again.

But if it was all girls
at the race shop,

I guarantee
I'd have some friends.

There is tons of people,
I think, that, you know,

just show up and do the job.

And part of the reason
is because they think,

"Well, what's the point?
She's not very good anyway."

If somebody has got something
to tell me to do better,

I will take it.

I have no problem
with instruction.

I am coachable.

You need to know more what's
in front and more what's behind.

What lines to move in.

Those things in your mind...Yeah.

Think what's going
to make you better?

What's going to help you,
you know what I mean,

make your decisions.

All I can do is push people

to work harder
and be honest

and get them to dig deeper

and get them to find
some heart in the project

and building amazing cars.

And just knowing that
whatever they're doing

is their very best.

that's all I can do,

but it's completely accurate

in feeling like
there's little control.

I usually tell people
if they come up

with a really crappy
question like,

"Are you excited about
the season starting?"

Or, "How do you feel about
being back in Kansas?"

And I'm like,
"Is that the best you got?

you could think of?"

And I literally ask them that.

And then they come up with
a new one and it's better.

"Try harder."

the microscope has been on her

because she's so marketable

I think their standard that
they have expected from her

has been much higher than a lot
of other drivers in the sport.

People race her a lot harder
than they race other people.

So we played basketball
for a while --

Danica: The relationship
has really evolved

into this really
comfortable space

where we are,

We're just really happy,

and it's really
straightforward and simple.

Aaron: And so Ricky was over
our house a lot.

And so I was like,
"Dude, just move in."

And so I didn't really care
if he did or didn't.

Like, you know, but I didn't
he would say yeah.

But he was like, "All right."
So he moved in.

I was like, "That's fine."

He was our new child.Yeah.

And he lived with us for what?

And then he started
dating Danica.

And then she ended up
moving in for about what?

A year.Almost a year.

I lived in my boyfriend's
accountant's guest room.

The two of us being together

beginning I'm all in.

my head around someone

Danica: Unfortunately, I have
been married before.

but it's really not
that critical right now.

cancer research.

And we walk with the kids
down the runway.

So they have a lot of fun
with that, which helps because

I feel awkward walking

kids when she was growing up.

I think she was, you know,

just a little bit too
focused on herself

and what she wanted to do.

Danica:
I have always had people say,

"Oh, you'll make
a great mom some day."

And there would be days
and a long, long time ago

where I would be
thinking in my head,

"I don't want to.
Like, I don't want kids."

It's definitely more
of a thought now.

And being with Ricky, that is
something he has always wanted.

Like, if were going to have
a relationship,

that had to be something
that I wanted.

Haley:
She would be a fantastic mom.

Unfortunately, the career
has to come first.

I think she has to be done
with racing before she's a mom.

Danica: I took matters into my
own hands

about a year and a half ago

and I went through
an IVF treatment.

And I froze my eggs.

And I was like, "Look, I'm going
to take control of my life here.

And I don't know
where it's going.

And I'm not married. And I don't
know what the plan is

And I don't know how long
I'm going to race,

but I can only have
33-year-old eggs today."

Ricky: We really wanted to
make sure

that we had all of
the bases covered.

I'm like, super traditional
type person.

And she's kind of
opened my eyes to,

"Hey, let's think about all
the options" with her driving.

I want to drive for a long time,

so I can't sit there
and ask her to quit.

Danica: I just feel like
it's one less concern.

It's, like, one less thing
to think about,

and there's a lot
of shit to think about,

especially nowadays when I
have, like, five businesses.

One of the things that I
always struggle with

because, you know, I got guns,

is the sleeves
are always too tight.

So this was the flutter sleeve
so that it just kind of hangs

off your arm
and looks flattering.

So I mean, just as far as, like,

details that I wanted
to put in a shirt.

This company G3,
I was talking to them

about merchandise
for the racetrack.

They just heard my whole story.

And they went ahead
and went to work,

and we created a clothing line.

Instead of thinking small with
just, like, team shirts,

we went all the way.

I love it.

Racing is what I do.
It's not necessarily who I am.

So when I'm away from the track,

if you would have asked
somebody five years ago

what do I like doing,

I've now made businesses
of all those things.

I have my own wine,
Somnium, which is this.

And so kind of like the

It's about trying

as probably a distraction

I'm sure as far as,

But she's talked about racing
and done racing for,

I literally wrote down
every workout

I've done for a year.

I tested nine workouts
in 4 days.

If I can only do what's written
for, you know, someone in 1 day,

then why am I writing

When my sponsor left
at the beginning of the year

and, you know, I kind of got
put in that position like,

"Ha, all right.
Never been here before.

Well, what if it's all over?"

At that point in time,
it was probably the first time

I've really, like,
wrapped my head around

what it would be like
to not be racing.

You know, there's some stuff
about it that sounds awesome,

like, less stress, less to do,
less frustrations

I am a total believer that
