SIRENS WAIL
'There are certain things in life
'that nothing prepares you for or hardens you to.
'And that's how it should be.
'Because if you become inured to those horrors, your soul dies.
'But this knowledge makes bearing witness to them
'beyond fucking tortuous.'
MUTED
TEARFULLY: I'm sorry.
KNOCKING
I need to speak to your mum.
Mum? Mum, the police are here.
What is it?
'Is it her?'
It's Britney.
I'm so sorry.
You told me you'd find her! You fucking promised!
You're liars.
You're all fucking...
SOBBING: ..liars.
SHE SOBS
I'm so sorry.
'I'm so sorry, Angela.'
It was him, wasn't it?
It was him, it was her grandad. No, no, he didn't kill her.
He was at the hospital. He couldnae have done it.
Erm... An officer will accompany you when you identify the body.
I want him to suffer.
Don't you worry, Angela. He's going to suffer.
That monster will wish he was never created.
SHE SOBS
Mr Gulliver, absolutely delighted you could join us this morning.
I'm delighted to be here. Really looking forward to it.
Please, if you just look this way? CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS
Thank you. Right, shall we do this?
ON STAGE: 'Ladies and gentlemen...' Thank you.
'..a big round of applause for Mr Richie Gulliver.'
When you break the bonds of a family, you have problems.
Now, take that young girl who vanished recently,
not a mile from here.
Britney Hamil.
She was 13 years old, ladies and gentlemen.
And she came from a broken family. God bless her.
It's a cautionary tale.
Do not break up the most successful family in modern times,
or you will have problems.
We are an island family living in a full house.
No room for mongrel interlopers.
We are stronger as a union with England, Northern Ireland and Wales.
A united family.
A United Kingdom.
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
We're ready for you now.
Long time no see, Lennox. How are you keeping?
CORONER HUMS TO HIMSELF
WHISPERING: I'm sorry, sweetheart.
She's not been dead more than ten hours.
She was strangled, probably as she was drugged and raped.
A condom was used. No sperm.
She'd spent a considerable amount of time restrained.
Tape marks on her wrists and ankles,
nothing deviating from a standard rape-homicide.
I'm gonna check out Cornell's employer, eh?
I'll keep trying to track into his transactions.
Er, I found these in her mouth, between her teeth.
Not sure it's from a gag.
Just as likely she tried to bite him in resistance,
then bit into a garment he was wearing.
WHISPERING: Find that shit. Work this case.
Find that shit. Work this case.
Yes to an independent Scotland?
Er... pint of lager and a... whiskey, please.
Yes, mate.

PUB CHATTER CONTINUES
TV: 'Gentlemen, at 7am this morning, a body was discovered
'at the National Monument in Calton Hill.'
The body has been identified as that of missing schoolgirl
13-year-old Britney Hamil.
'We are treating the death as suspicious,
'and we are launching a murder inquiry.'
We're now asking the public to help us.
'Anyone with information relating to Britney's disappearance
'should come forward.
'Our team will be working tirelessly to bring the killer to justice.'
PHONE RINGS 'Thank you.'
Hey.
Hi. Just seen about the little girl.
It's... It's awful.
'Between her and the French couple, what's happening to this place?'
I've...
I've... I've failed her, fucked up.
What? It's not your fault. 'It's my fault.'
You OK?
I found... I found her. I had to go and tell her mother.
Oh, Jesus, Ray.
'Where are you? Shall I come and meet you?'
No. I'm, er...
I'm at work. I've got to go, hey?
'OK. I love you.'
No. No, I...
Take a seat. Mr McClelland will be with you shortly.
I see. Yeah.
Look, the thing is, we cannot divulge personal information
about employees to the press.
Yes. Well, er, you have to put in a written request.
To me, Baxter McClelland.
You must be Detective Inspector Lennox. I'm...
Baxter McClelland?
Graham Cornell?
Oh, still not due back from holiday for another week.
Yeah, I know. Any idea where he went?
Graham's a quiet sort.
It's like pulling teeth, getting anything out of him sometimes.
Oh, yeah? Not in a bad way.
It's just, you know, he's not exactly gregarious.
Karen? Detective Inspector Lennox here
needs to find out where Graham's gone on holiday.
Huh? I dunno. He went on a sightseeing thing to Rome last year.
He's a bit of a secret squirrel.
How do you mean? Just keeps his self to his self.
Er, I can email you his work diary if that helps?
Yeah, thanks.
There's a few references to an "RG". Friday lunch, Tuesday lunch...
Did Graham ever mention an "RG" to you?
No.
Probably best we head to his flat in New Haven.
He lives alone, but a neighbour might have a key.
No, no, no. It's all right. It's all right. I've got it from here.
Of course. Just want to help in any way I can.
That's, er... That's fascinating, eh?
What's that? Police work.
I'm a budding crime novelist.
I've just finished another draft of my debut novel.
They Paid In Blood. I was wondering, er...
..would you mind giving it the once-over?
I strive for authenticity and...
Nothing authentic about police work. Kind of mirrors life.
Lots of complexity and confusion.
Oh. All right.
But yeah, yeah.
Email it over with Cornell's diary.
Oh, that's great, thanks. I'll just email it now. Erm...
Ray?
Those fibres that were...
The fibres that were in Britney's mouth, we checked it out.
They're the same sort they have on the hoods of parkas.
We're looking into the brand. How was Angela at the ID?
Yeah, it was hell, but she got through it.
Robert Ellis again.
Robert Ellis is the Confectioner. Confectioner got Britney.
It's the same MO. It's his signature. He's still out there.
And that could be Cornell?
Maybe. Let's go and check his flat.
Forensics are on their way there now. I mean, the only thing
we've got on Cornell is circumstantial.
We need some proper evidence.
No recent calls recorded on his phone and no transactions,
on his card for the last four days.
At pains to leave no trace. Dodgy.
Get Jill to find out where Cornell was
when Stacy and Nuala were murdered, eh? Sure.
PHONE RINGS OUT
PHONE RINGS
Ray. To what do I owe the pleasure?
Three guesses.
'Listen, mate, you wanna sack that job off.'
Come down here and join me in the security industry.
'Sunshine and sea, I'm telling you.'
Ray. Come on. Do yourself a favour.
'You've served your time, mate.' Some day. Maybe.
Listen, the Andrews and Ernshaw murders -
the killer has the same MO as a case of a wee girl I'm on.
It's the same guy, George.
'Confectioner's still out there.' Oh.
The, er... Britney Hamil girl, yeah? 'Yeah.'
And was she raped? 'Yeah.'
Tape marks on the neck? 'Yeah.'
Kept for two days?
Yeah. 'And placed somewhere in public...'
For us to find.
Yeah. 'Yeah, well, always thought
'that he'd come back, didn't we? You know my take on it, Ray.'
I told them. I told everyone until I was blue in the face.
There's no way that Ellis committed any of those murders.
I'm convinced of it, George. Convinced of it.
There's no chance that Ellis was the Confectioner.
'But if you decide to go down this road...'
you're gonna have to decide if it's worth it for you. You know?
'Personally.'
Got to go, George.
'Thanks.' Yeah.
Yeah.
Anything?
Graham Cornell has a lovely collection of homoerotic art,
for a start. What else have we got?
Apparently not much.
There's only one set of prints anywhere, and these.
They don't open anything in here.
This guy was tidy to the point of anal.
No pun intended.
INDISTINCT CHATTER
Hi. How can I help?
I know who killed Britney Hamil.
And Claire Gorman. And Hazel Lloyd.
She's gone, and I know where she's buried.
It was me.
I did it.
I killed them all.
Is that him?
Of course it is, look at him. Fucking French.
Fuck sake.
Hello. Mr LeBlanc?
Louis, please. Hello. You must be Monsieur Roberto, yes?
Yes, yes. This is DS Dougie... Douglas Gillman.
All right? Enchante, enchante.
How was Eurostar?
My preferred way of travel, the train.
I get the time for reading the notes and thinking the thoughts. Perfect.
Time. Yeah.
Well, we'll take you to the hotel and then on to the crime scene, yes?
D'accord. Lead the way. PHONE RINGS
Yes?
Yes!
We have a confession. Huh?
What, Lennox come through with that civil-service guy?
No. Not the Cornell guy.
Someone walked in, put their hand up for Britney and for Claire Gorman.
Er, it's another case. Bloody fine result.
Congratulations. Hee-hee!
Sweet. Sweet!
You're admitting that you killed Britney Hamil.
Aye. Britney Hamil.
What's all this? This? The piece of feral shit,
Gary Franklin, has confessed to taking Britney and killing her.
And Claire Gorman, and another missing girl.
He's buried her in woodland out in Perthshire.
Hazel Lloyd.
His only previous is petty theft.
He was at school with the lassie. Says he tried to have sex with her.
Couldn't manage. He killed her by accident after she taunted him.
His first kill.
Gary, Claire Gorman, take us back to the start.
When did this happen?
Claire Gorman, hmm.
She was my first. But there's more.
Let's put all these connections together.
Loads more.
'OK. Go on.' 'Hazel was so...'
Boss. The Gorman murder was ten years ago.
Gary Franklin would have been, what, barely 16?
Never interrupt a canary when it wants to sing.
Where was he when Britney was taken?
How did he snatch her? Has he shown us the van?
He'll tell us everything. He's obsessed with Hazel Lloyd.
He wants to get that off his chest first.
Obsessed full stop. It's textbook serial killer trainspotting.
So I went for a walk with Claire... 'He gets off on the details.'
She'd been cock-teasing me for ages, eh?
She'd already keyed her hole to do boys in her year.
'So she was getting it one way or another.'
Let me in there with him, boss.
No. We're gonna bang this guy up for Britney.
You eliminate a tie-in with the French murder,
because the public are spooked with this serial killer stuff.
'She was teasing me...'
I'm going to update the police committee.
'She was asking...'
Then I'm going to Perth to find Hazel Lloyd's body.
'Do you have any exact dates for this here, Gary?'
I think he knows a lot about these cases.
I don't believe he killed Britney,
but this has obviously got you... Ray?
KNOCKING
DI Lennox entering the room. DC McCorkle leaving the room.
CLEARS HIS THROAT
I'm trying to work out your connection with these three girls.
Why those three?
Well, Claire was the one I wanted to be with.
And you know what happened there.
The other two, you get a taste for it, eh? You cannae stop.
Right. Well, let's talk about Claire. Must have been hard,
getting her in your car with those high heels on, eh?
Well... Where there's a will, there's a way.
So, Claire wouldnae get your hole. Well, fair enough.
I understand that. You're a man of passions, and sometimes, lasses,
they just didnae get that. They go for the shallow, smarmy creep, eh?
I'm fascinated by how you managed to get Britney
into the back of your black Toyota Prius.
I'll tell you all about that. I'm not talking about her right now.
What did you use to tie her up?
I, erm... These are important details, Gary.
The beasts will want to know. Beasts?
See, this, this probably seems like a smart move.
You're thinking all the true crime groupies will be lining up
for conjugal visits. That's not what...
You're forgetting one thing. The beasts wing.
You will be surrounded by
the monsters that you pretend to be one of. But, oh, for sure,
the conjugal visits will be abundant,
but they wouldnae be from the lost women that see themselves
as saviours of violent men.
And this cock of yours? Hoo!
Prized by these monsters, mate. Even more than your arsehole,
because that's what they want - to exonerate themselves
by claiming this trophy that defiled those girls.
Do you want to go there, Gary? Because it doesnae matter to us.
It won't matter to the monsters.
Do you want to fucking go there?! No, no!
Do you want to fucking go there? I didnae touch them!
I didn't do anything. I swear, I didn't.
Claire was wearing trainers, you daft fucking twat.
I didnae do anything! I didn't! I didnae do anything.
I'm sorry. I'm sorry I did it.
Jesus Christ, Ray. Bob's gonna be so pissed off.
Well, he might just have to get over his fucking aversion to police work.
Do you really think we're chasing Confectioner?
Yeah. Told us too. He's just shitting it about the politics.
And that Cornell's Confectioner?
There's only two ways that we can know.
One, by finding Cornell. Two, by eliminating all the other suspects.
KNOCKING
Well?
You saved me freezing my bollocks off in Perthshire.
But I fucked up, Bob.
There was a chain of command, and I broke it.
I undermined you, and I'm sorry.
HE GUFFAWS
Even steal my fucking lines!
Alex Ferguson used to manage Eric Cantona
differently to his other players.
Be my Eric Cantona. Don't be my Beckham.
Do not be my fucking Jaap Stam.
Now, lay it all out for me... as you see it.
Er... Well, we're looking for Graham Cornell.
Still no sign. It's hard to vanish like that these days
without any help, but could Cornell be the Confectioner?
Cos I don't think Ellis is.
You will prioritise suspects that we have.
Loughran. Cornell.
Instead of trying to overturn a previous conviction.
Or you are done here. End of.
You got it?
KNOCKING
Patrol are saying Tommy Loughran's back home.
Go.
Providence. I didn't know you believed in God.
I don't. But there's one thing those Bible bashers have got right.
What's that?
We're those just fighting against flesh and blood.
We're fighting against evil.
These beasts suck the life out of their victims.
They're fucking vampires.
Hello, Tommy. You took your time.
I never took any bairn. Didn't say you had.
Did you hear me ask if he'd abducted anyone?
Nope. I asked where you were
eight forty-five on Thursday morning.
I listen to the radio. I know why you're here.
Sit down. I'm getting a crick looking up at you.
We're interviewing you as a potential witness, not a suspect.
Did you see this girl when you left the house?
We tend to keep ourselves to ourselves, eh, Percy boy?
Maybe you saw something now, did you?
What's that, Percy boy? You never saw a van?
Or a wee lassie?
You were too busy sniffing lamp posts.
It's all I can do to walk 50 yards down the street
to let Percy have a pish.
While I concentrate on when I might cease to draw another breath.
Asbestosis.
I... I saw something.
I saw a wee lassie. On her way to school.
In a bright red blazer. Girl has a wee smile.
'She was walking past a van.
'Then she just... disappeared.
'Kiddies being snatched up off the street in broad daylight.
'It's not something you see every day.'
Did you see a man in the van? No. Couldn't really see anything.
I heard the side door open. It must have been behind it.
You're not long out of uniform by the look of it, aye?
What's that supposed to mean?
I can see you in that black uniform, a nice wee blouse.
Hair tied up.
Your hair tied up in a nice wee bun, eh?
Or a ponytail, eh?
No, I don't think I did.
GASPING
MACHINE BEEPS
GASPING
DS Drummond... you seem to have inadvertently stood on
Mr Loughran's oxygen tube.
Oh. Have I?
GASPING
Clumsy.
COUGHING AND SPLUTTERING
If you could just jot your phone number down here, Tommy, eh?
You've been very helpful, mate.
You'll have to shout it out to me. The disc on Percy's collar.
0-7-7-0-0-9-0-0-6-2-4.
Thanks, Tommy.
I, er... I have to apologise.
That was very unprofessional.
It was indeed, DS Drummond.
But it was fucking brilliant. Bet it felt good, eh?
HE LAUGHS Aye, it did.
And we struck gold. How's that?
Well, the yellow paper found where Britney went missing.
Loughran had a ream of it. That's stretching it a bit, no?
Besides, look at him. He's hardly got the energy.
Could be part of a ring. Wolves often hunt in packs.
OK. Got the intel to back it up? Connections?
Sure we will have. He's been caught with material in the past.
I'll go through the files. Better you than me.
No amount of training prepares you for child porn, hey?
No such fucking thing as child porn. It's abuse.
Yeah. I'm sorry, I didn't know. No, no, it's OK. I'm sorry.
It's the sounds that kill me. I can't get them out my head.
Yeah, me neither.
Someone's got to bear witness to pure evil, though, eh?
Are you sure that paper was yellow?
The... What the fuck?
HORN BLARES
What the hell, Ray?
It was yellow.
I could have sworn it was... It was yellow. I mean...
The lighting was low. You might... Fuck sake.
Easy mistake.
Aye. Should get myself to Specsavers, eh?
Don't mention this to the others.
Pull over. Pull over.
That for Graham Cornell? Er, aye.
That's a different address on the package.
It's been redirected. Happens all the time.
Whoa, come on. It's OK, mate.
Sex toys. Bondage.
Kinky bastard. Each to their own, eh?
Let's go see what we can find out there.
Enjoy. POSTMAN CHUCKLES
PHONE RINGS Boss.
'Fucking press have my nuts in a sling.'
Not called that nowadays. 'Hey?'
Not the fucking press nowadays. It's the fucking media.
'Oh, don't act a fucking wideo cunt with me, Ray.
'Find Cornell!
'Erm, is Amanda with you? You got me on speakerphone?'
Yes to both, boss. 'Er, pardon the French.'
Why is he getting mail redirected from a flat two miles away?
Maybe it's an office, business address?
Ray. Ray, we don't have a warrant.
A full forensic team should be here.
You stole those from Cornell's flat.
You are gonna fuck up our entire investigation,
going rogue like this.
By the time we've fannied around with all that crap,
the trail's gone cold. HE SHIVERS
Hello?
Why would he live in that flat if he's got this one?
Check who owns it.
What is this place?
It's like something out of the Spanish inquisition.
Jesus. Won't find him in here.
What's that smell?
What? Whiff of sulphur.
Devil himself.
HE CHUCKLES
Forensics will have a field day in here.
Wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that.
See this?
Britney?
'How delightful is the imagination.
'Nothing resists us.
'It means that every crime is ours,
'and we employ them all and multiply the horror a hundredfold.'
Marquis de Sade, he's the freak that all this shite is named after.
You've read his books? You'd be surprised.
Surprised that you read an 18th-century French philosopher?
Or how depraved he was?
His books are not really about sex. They're more about power.
Raw power. Yeah?
Totally. I mean, that's what makes them so terrifying.
"To Daddy RG. Thank you for teaching me."
RG.
We had a... a suspect in custody earlier today,
but he's no longer a, erm... a person of interest.
We are pursuing, erm...
..other avenues, a-and I remain confident.
Can I just say that, as distressing as this case is,
I have full confidence in Chief Superintendent Toal
and his amazing officers.
Let them do their jobs.
I thought you didn't drink.
Sometimes, it affords clarity amidst the confusion.
Let's go through Cornell again.
So, he befriends Angela. Learns the girl's movements.
Takes time off work, disappears around the same time as Britney.
It's all circumstantial. For now, yeah.
PHONE CHIMES
So, Cornell doesnae start at the civil service
until after the murders of Stacy and Nuala.
We looked into him,
as to how Graham Cornell could have killed Stacy or Nuala.
He was a VSO in Ghana on those timelines.
So it's unlikely he's Confectioner.
It doesn't mean he's not responsible for Britney Hamil, though, eh?
Appreciate you indulging me and looking into it, eh?
You're welcome, Ray, but, at the risk of sounding like Bob...
AS BOB: ..let's focus on this fucking case, eh?
Sorry, keep jumping ahead. Or back.
Normally hooch or snatch. All right, sweetheart?
What's up? All right, darlin'?
Oh, Raymond.
You must join us. We've booked a table.
So, I've made it my task to civilise Douglas Gillman.
The surrounding is beautiful, of course,
but I'm for needing your help here.
Worthy of difficult tasks, Louis.
I'd love to help, but I do have somewhere to be.
Oh, that's too bad. Perhaps the lovely Amanda will join us?
Erm... No. Unfortunately, I need to be making tracks as well.
You bevvying again, Lenny? One-way ticket to the park bench, that.
Kick you off it first, mate, eh?
Wonder what the story there is. Oh, they're partners.
And very professional. It's innocent, I'm sure.
Aye, maybe. But Lennox likes to make out that he's Mr Nice Guy.
But when he smells nonce, he plays dirty.
And when he plays dirty, anything goes.
God.
'Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
'the courage to change the things I can.'
Shite. It's all fucking shite.
WOMAN: So, how is Rod? No.
SHE LAUGHS OK.
Edinburgh Merchant schoolboy that does not know
what his fingers and his tongue are for. He was like...
Yes. Yeah, he needs a road map in bed.
Oh, I'm so sorry. No. But between you and me, OK,
between you and me... I've met somebody a bit more exciting.
Oh, right, OK. And does exciting mean married?
Yes. OK. It does. Mm-hm. Estelle!
You've got to keep that on the down-low. You've got to.
Of course. OK.
What's, erm... What's his name? Ray.
Ray. That was it. Yeah. Yeah, he's good. He's good.
I'm a bit worried about him at the moment.
He's under a ton of stress at work, but...
Oh, shit. What?
That is our senior project director, Mr Mount McKendrick.
And that is not his wife.
Lucky woman.
Look, there's just some things, as head of HR,
you don't want to know about, OK? OK, OK.
HE GASPS

40 games for them, before moving to Dundee United,

HIS WORDS ECHO AND REPEAT
Are you ready, Angela? You'll be absolutely fine.
Where have you been?
Listen, tread carefully at this press conference, Ray.
Oh! SHE LAUGHS
OK.
Oh, as if. As if!
Yeah. Well played, well played.
You and Estelle are good friends.
We'll all be working very closely together.
How do you feel about that? Yeah.
It's a really strong management team.
I'm excited to work with everyone. Good.
Of course, there's some treacherous waters to navigate,
but I'd be more than happy to help you through them.
Thank you. It's really appreciated.
On that note, we should get dinner sometime.
Yeah, I do tend to only go for dinner
with people who are my boyfriend, though, so...
Of course.
Lucky guy.
Yeah, we're both very lucky.
Er, great. Thank you again.
It was a great game. Well played.
That S&M den. It's owned by a company, East Lowden Properties.
It's, erm... no sub-letter. And there's only one director -
Richie Gulliver.
Find out where he is right now. Yeah.
Found the owner of the S&M den. Ritchie Gulliver.
My name is Ritchie, and I am a drug addict.
Good morning, everybody. Thank you for coming.
We'd like to begin the press conference
with Detective Chief Superintendent Bob Toal.
The investigation to find Britney Hamil's killer is ongoing.
This case has affected us all.
When that monster... took my bairn away...
..he took my heart away.
Every gulp of air I breathe will never taste the same again.
He's taken a huge part of my life...
..and her big sister's life.
The kiddies at school are having nightmares.
He's devastated a community, and... it can't happen to anybody else.
So...
..if you know anything,
please, tell the police.
ON RADIO: 'We have to catch this man.'
'Tragic thing is, the killer isnae a stranger.
He might be a relative. He might be a parent. He might be a lover.
It's somebody that we know in this community.
And if anybody knows of anyone who's behaving out of the ordinary,
please, contact the police.
Nobody presents as the monster that they are,
and they only become apparent when we find out what they've been doing.
Let me say this... to the killer.
If you're out there watching this,
there's something that you want from us.
What I would beg for you to do now is to turn yourself in
so that we can find out what this is together.
Innocent people shouldnae die because of your pain and torment.
The way you see it is you have motivations
for doing what you're doing.
The twisted gratification of murder?
We can't understand you. You need to make us understand.
Let us help. Work with us.
Because know this - I will hunt you down,
and I will find you.
Thanks, er, DS Lennox.
This, er... This case is obviously, er...
It's obviously very, er... very distressing,
but the public can rest assured that we are leaving no stone unturned
in order to apprehend the perpetrator of this heinous crime.
CLINKING
If I could crave your indulgence, ladies and gentlemen.
The Newtown Affiliates were formed... Can you believe it?
..ten years ago, to facilitate communication
between the great and the good of our business
and political communities. APPLAUSE
'People say it's all about greed and self-interest.
'But history has shown us that greed and self-interest are the engines
'that drive our civilization.'
Nothing can stop us.
So here's to us, and here's to a united, prosperous Great Britain.
ALL: Hear, hear!
What's this? Ray?
DI Lennox, Lothian Police. Serious Crime.
Richie Gulliver, I'm arresting you in connection
with the murder of Britney Hamil.
You're not obliged to say anything...
Is this a practical joke?
Anything you do say will be noted and may be used in evidence.
Oh, you're not... You're not gonna cuff me, are...?
I think you'll find there's been a terrible misunderstanding.
'There's satisfaction in stripping some absolute bastard
'who thinks they're beyond the laws the rest are compelled to obey
'of their deluded arrogance.'
Enjoy your lunch.
'This sweet taste is too often denied us.
'So just savour.'
