Britain is a divided nation.

With high inflation,
the cost of basics

like food and power
are going through the roof.

And it's hitting the poor
a lot harder than the rich.

But is money the key to happiness?

Two families living at opposite ends
of the wealth divide

are about to find out.

Single mum Julie shares a cramped
house with her grown-up daughters.

Children can't afford to leave home.
They just can't afford it.

Daughter Chloe
has to sleep on the sofa.

I don't have my own space,
I don't have my own, like,

place to go.

Julie works in a care home,
and money is very tight.

Really doesn't pay the bills.

But she loves giving back.

I like to help, I'm very caring,'

and that gives me more happiness
than money could ever do.

Millionaire Jazz started out in life

teaching football classes
to schoolchildren.

Making about £30 a week at the time,

and over time
I started to bring other people in.

In just ten years he created
a £3 million coaching empire.

Now he runs a business

teaching other people
to be successful as he is.

One of the things
that really drags me a little bit

is seeing people
who have masses of skills

but they're not creating the income

that matches the skill sets
that they have.

For just one week,
their families are swapping homes...

Wow.

I'm scared to go in now.

...budgets...

That's a lot of dough.

...and lives...

We spent £12.87.

...to discover whether money
really does buy happiness.

Travel 44 miles north-east
from London

and you reach the town of Halstead
in Essex.

A small semi-detached
is home to single mum Julie

and her adult children.

It's not easy.

We make do, and we get on
and muck in together.

Daughter Chloe
doesn't even have her own bedroom.

I hate the fact that she sleeps
on the sofa in the living room.

I want her to have her own room.

I'm looking to look at
the conservatory,

see if I can do something in there
to make it a bedroom for her.

I haven't got the money
to do that at the moment.

Times haven't always been so hard.

Julie used to run a successful
doggy daycare service.

It got quite big, and
it was a well-established business,

and then Covid hit
and instantly shut me down.

The failure of her business
knocked Julie's confidence,

and she's struggled since.

I had no income,
I wasn't able to pay my bank loan

and other credit cards
and things like that,

so I had to go to
an insolvency company,

so I'm basically bad credit now.

Julie works in a care home and is
soon moving on to help the homeless.

I like to give,
I like to help, I'm very caring,

and that is... That gives me more
happiness than money could ever do.

She is passionate
about helping other people,

but struggles on the low wages.

Once I've paid my bills, my rent,

council tax, gas, electricity,
I'm left with very little.

I'm left with basically
about £58 a week for shopping.

Both girls are studying.

Chloe, 21, is qualifying in
cosmetic aesthetics.

Martine, 17, is at theatre school.

Julie feels guilty that she
can't support them more financially.

It makes me feel helpless, really.

But she's got a dream,
and it combines her love of caring

with a possible solution
to the family's money problems.

I would love to run
a bar/pub/restaurant

and have special days for people
with dementia and things like that.

Just an hour's drive from leafy
Essex on the outskirts of London,

Romford is home
to 36-year-old businessman Jazz

and his Portuguese partner Catia.

With five bedrooms,
a beautiful garden

and even a steam room,
Jazz has bought his dream house.

I remember walking into the house
and thinking, "Oh, my goodness,

"this is a bit of Jazz.
This is a bit of me."”

His life now is a million miles
from the crowded West London terrace

where he grew up.

I remember when I was 12 years old
my mum gave me her last £20

and asked me to go to the shop
and buy some milk.

I lost the £20 on the way
to the shop playing football,

and I realised
that was the first time

that | saw tears in my mum’s eyes

and it made me realise that money
has a massive impact on your life.

When he was young,

Jazz had dreams of becoming
a professional footballer,

but was plagued by injuries.

Then he was given an opportunity
to coach in a local school,

and from there, things snowballed.

I started to contact more schools
and bring other people in

to start delivering the sessions
on my behalf,

and over time, we scaled
that business from £30 a week

to a £3 million business
with 150 staff.

In 2020, Jazz sold the business
to establish a consultancy.

He now teaches other people
how to grow their income.

One of the things
that really drags me a little bit

is seeing people
who have masses of skills

but they're not creating the income

that matches the skill sets
that they have.

Absolutely smashed it,
and I look to seeing your growth.

So why are Jazz
and Catia doing the swap?

I think the lesson that we'll
be learning, I think both of us,

I think I can speak for both of us,

making sure we don't forget
our humble beginnings.

to get out of the week?

The reason why I'm doing this

is maybe give myself
a bit of a kick up the backside

to maybe look at things where I
do perhaps need to achieve higher.

She's always wanted to have her

That has always been her dream.

And all we want ultimately is for
her to be happy, and by doing this,

I think she'll get the end goal of
her being happy doing what she loves

and us also be financially stable.

a weekly spending budget of £1,200.

I started my first business
when I was 17,

took that business from £30
to £3 million.

For the next week,
they'll be managing on £59.

I feel like it's nothing,
it's not enough. Yeah.

Day two, and Jazz and Catia start
each day by meditating together.

In terms of meditation, your
surroundings, of course it matters,

cos you need to be in a Zen space,

and they certainly
have a lovely outdoor space.

Living the rich life,

also start the day with exercise.

on a private Pilates session.

I think successful people do work
out because I think they have to

otherwise they would burn out.

Mum kind of, like, writes herself
off when it comes to exercise.

She's very self-conscious,
and she's very aware of the fact

that she doesn't look
the way she wants to look.

Is that right?

It may the hard work,

but it's taking Julie's mind
off her troubles.

Once I get it right, I think that
would really, really help me

just switch off from the world
because my mind never switches off.

it's time to get supplies in.

With just £59 to manage on

It's quite expensive.

Normally, Jazz and Catia's food
is delivered to the door,

so going shopping is something
totally out of the ordinary.

I haven't been out personally,
like, with bags in my hand,

walking into a shop,
in a long time.

Shopping with that limited budget

gave me an insight that
that's what a lot of people now do.

They have to be very mindful
how much they spend

and where their money goes.

We spent £12.87,
something near that amount.

Very efficient. Tuna steaks,
buy one, get one free.

I like options,
but this can certainly work.

Day after day, week,
month after month,

having a limited
and a constrained budget,

emotionally, I think
that must be very draining.

It's certainly depressing,

and you have to bear in mind,
you know,

how does that affect every single
person in the household.

In Romford, Jazz's cousin Shane
has called in.

It's time to discover more
about the owner of the house.

Tell me a bit about his childhood.
Was you a well-off family?

Yes and no. Mainly no.

We literally just came from
humble beginnings.

So how did Jazz break away
from his poor background

and end up in a luxury house?

There's no surprise even just
being here, where Jazz is today,

because at such a young age,
for example,

we'd be given £5, whether it's from
my mum, his mum,

"This is your little sweet money
for the weekend",

Friday, all right?

Come Sunday, if I've got 50p left,
I've done well.

Jazz with literally have,
no word of a lie, £3 left,

and I'm noticing Jazz is literally
saving that £3 every single week,

and even at that age, Jazz was very,
very, very good with budgeting,

and that's what he does now, he
goes back and he teaches people

how to budget, teaches people
how to be financially free.

So having heard that from him,
it does make me think

that Mum really does need
to latch on to this opportunity.

The amount of lives that
he's affecting and he's helping,

to I'm just proud of him.

He is gonna be learning
about what I am interested in,

with the restaurant, bar.

I am interested to see
what he thinks about it,

see whether it is actually doable
or not.

Barbara has come round.

I think that there's a gap maybe
around how using that ability

to help people
can actually help her as well

and help her financial situation in
terms of generating income from it.

So that's something to explore,
really.

I don't know her monthly salary,

but I know she never has
any money by the third week,

and everything is on a budget.

I can tell she's a dog lover.

To work with dogs,
you have to be very giving,

and especially to be boarding,

to give over your home.

really well.

Dogs loved her, all the owners
loved her and then Covid hit.

Is that why she stopped dog walking?

She just felt maybe
that was the time to stop,

because the problem with being
self-employed, as I'm sure you know,

there's no certainty to it.
There's no security. Yeah.

And suddenly you're hit with a
pandemic with no guaranteed income.

Yeah. We were hit really hard
during Covid.

Time to take the dogs for a run.

Has she ever thought
about going back to it?

Has she spoke to you about it
or anything like that? Yeah.

I don't think going
back into the dogs is the way to go.

I know, you know,
long-term plan, her goal,

her dream, she'd love to open,
like, a cafe bar restaurant venue,

and because
she's so community spirited,

I think one of the things that
she'd really love to do is to hold,

like, dementia friendly sessions
in the cafe restaurant.

Julie's clearly
very entrepreneurial,

and I'm really excited to see
where those entrepreneurial skills,

where it can and how it can help
other people

whilst also making Julie
and her family more profitable.

The girls want to give
Julie's confidence a boost.

Here we go.

They're insisting
she buy some new outfits.

You do need work clothes.

And treat yourself, maybe a nice
little bag or shoes or whatever.

I think the thing why
Mum doesn't like shopping,

as children going shopping,
you have no understanding of money.

Mum struggled to say no because
she wanted to give us whatever,

she wanted us to have the best life,
have everything we want.

I think that's really cool.

So I think the less we went shopping
the less bad she'd feel in herself,

and the less she'll feel like
she's failed.

It was nice to see Mum actually

and not having to worry
about the prices.

But it just feels like
it's a lot of work.

She needs her own space.

She's the only one
that doesn't have a bedroom.

She's an active girl,

to sort out Chloe's sofa bed
in the living room

and exploit the conservatory.

Maybe it would be better

to have this as more of a lounge,
chilling area, family space.

And then just use
the living room as Chloe's bedroom.

Next it's off to the superstore.

Using their own money, they plan
to buy new furniture for both rooms,

and the priority
is to give Chloe some storage.

Hopefully, they can at least
get a bed in

before the family returns home.

There's always grants,

your citizen's advice bureau.

and you'll find that information.

There's a lot of information
out there.

It is gonna be a lot of hard work.
It's not an easy...

I know that,
but I never make my life easy.

is being very family-orientated.

her chat with businesswoman Hesalya,

Julie's called a family meeting
to discuss the pros and cons

of her running a bar
that gives back to the community.

A big passion.

Cons. Don't have much knowledge
of the hospitality sector.

I think the fact that she's
passionate about it is a good start,

but it's not enough to be
able to have a booming business.

How stressful is running a bar?

How long does it take for it
to get off the ground?

Talking it through
makes them realise

that they should follow Hesalya's
advice and do their research.

Fortunately, Jazz and Catia's local
is just around the corner...

...and the landlady, Lorraine,
is happy to talk.

How did you start?

My parents were publicans,
I got my first pub in 2001.

Lorraine knows all
the tricks of the trade,

but it comes with a dose of honesty.

It's a dying industry,
unfortunately. Yeah.

It is a dying industry so unless
you find a niche in the market...

I'm looking to have certain days
for dimension friendly,

because I work with dementia,

and one thing that they don't have
is to go and eat somewhere

where they, the families or care
staff where they feel comfortable.

So that's a nice thing

cos the hub of the community
used to be the local pub.

Yeah.
That's now gone.

Yeah. So you would be
creating a different kind of hub.

It might be a nice idea,
but as the conversation goes on,

Julie becomes aware of the size
of the challenge she's facing.

So obviously you'd need
to buy stock.

Yeah. If you open a place
that wasn't kitted out

you've obviously gotta have all this
built,

you've gotta buy fridges,
you'd have to build your bar.

Now you have to have a premises
licence. Yeah. There's a lot to it.

It's not just, open up a place.
No.

It was definitely helpful and
it made a lot of things clever,

because she told us, like the brutal
reality of, like, running a bar.

So if you were to start up now,
would you or not? No.

No, you wouldn't.
No. No.

OK.

When she said to me that, erm...
I asked her, honestly,

do you think I should do this?
And she said no.

She said don't. It kind of...
My heart sank.

Jazz an Catia
have dipped into their deep pockets.

They've used their own money
to buy a bed for Chloe,

and it's arrived
in the nick of time.

I am not good at furniture
putting together.

What will take a normal person
ten minutes will take me an hour,

and I'll end up putting it the
wrong way and have to do it again!

The fact that Julie couldn't afford
a proper bed for Chloe

reminds Jazz how his family
struggled.

I remember times when we had,
my family and myself,

we had just enough money to survive
but we didn't have enough to thrive,

and it's given me the discipline
to go out there

and really create something of my
life and help others along the way.

Living on just £59 for the week

has brought painful memories back
to millionaire Jazz.

I remember times when we had,
my family and myself,

we had just enough money to survive
but we didn't have enough to thrive.

Single mum Julie is chasing
her dream of running a bar,

but it's not all good news.

It's a dying industry,
unfortunately. Yeah.

you find a niche in the market...

Yeah.

It's the end of the week,

and Jazz and Catia
have spent the last of their money

on ice cream and chips.

But they're discovering that some
of the best things in life are free.

A lot of people only connect now
on their iPhones or their Samsung

and suchlike - digital connection,
which is good in some ways,

but you've gotta find ways to be
physically present with each other

and to connect face-to-face.

Julie and the girls are off
for a rare treat, dinner out...

Julie started the week with
the dream of owning her own bar,

but has she changed her mind?

It's been a roller coaster,
I'm not gonna lie.

Talking to has Hesalya really
made me feel yes, I can do this.

Then we met Lorraine,
and I did have a bit of a nosedive,

and she did say honestly,

if she was doing it from now
she wouldn't do it,

and that was a little bit
of a red flag.

One thing we have learned
as a family this week

is how to communicate properly,
and doing it

in the right way instead of just
having an argument about it.

It's been a week of ups and downs,
but it's allowed them all

to focus on
what they really want out of life.

I don't wanna be a millionaire,
that's not my goal,

I want to just be able
to comfortably come out

and have a meal with you guys,
and just, you know, not worry.

It's financial stability, isn't it?

You just wanna be
financially stable. Stable.

Don't, because you'll make me cry.

...that I can't provide for you.

You always have done.

There's nothing that we haven't...
We've never missed out on anything.

Money means nothing.

Well, that hit a nerve, didn't it?

Day six.
It's the final day of the swap,

and as they return
to their old lives,

all sorts of thoughts
are going through their minds.

It's definitely made me realise that
when I do go home,

something needs to change, I need
my own bedroom, I need my own space.

I think this week for Mum is gonna
be kind of like a milestone week.

I see already the changes in her
and I can only think that time

is just gonna make her
even more better in herself.

It is exhausting sometimes being
me because I put on this front,

this front that I'm happy go lucky,
confident, and I'm really not.

Oh! This has brought my guard down.

Before they go home, the families
are meeting up at a hotel.

It's a chance to discuss the week
and how it's affected them.

You have a beautiful house,
a really beautiful house.

How did you find it, then, at ours?

Yeah, it was good.
It was different.

It was different, but it was
a very cosy house, very friendly.

As soon as we walked in we could
tell there was a family house.

Swapping houses was the easy bit.
What about swapping budgets?

How did you find it
having to think about money?

What crossed my mind was more so
how you do it

and you do it every week,
you know, in terms of, you know,

budgeting the money

and making sure
you still have the meals

and you still have
all the things that you guys need.

It's why I often do it online,

because then I can see
how much I'm spending.

Yeah, and you can take things out.

Without being embarrassed
about being in a shop

and not having enough money.

Jazz knows about Julie's dream
to open a pub.

He's come up with an idea

that could get her started
in the hospitality business,

and also use her skills as a carer.

It's about turning that passion,
that skill set that you have,

and also generating
financial success from it as well.

Right.

Julie could rent out space
and provide activities

and a meeting place for the elderly.

She could even lay on simple meals.

Let's take the community centre
as an example, so from 10 to 12,

you've got certain guests
that come in,

you do all of
the engaging activities that day,

and that's an easy way
for you to then get started.

I can do it, but the business side,
that's where I need the knowledge.

To get the ball rolling,

Jazz and Catia are happy
to give Julie the support she needs.

So while living in your house, we,

Chloe needs her space and I think
every girl needs their own space,

we did get a bed, so we put the bed
in the living bread.

And they'll be more changes to come.

We are thinking to turn the
conservatory area into, you know,

a living space cos I know
you guys like to come together,

sit down and watch TV.

Yeah, and just put anything that
you guys need in there

to make it a nice liveable space
in terms of the conservatory

and make it the perfect bedroom
for you.

I think the family have showed that.

I'm very overwhelmed, it's been
very, very emotional for me today.

He's helping me with my first event,

and doing this for Chloe, and me,
all of us, really,

it's just... I can't... Words
can't describe how grateful we are.

Within days, new furniture
arrives to complete Chloe's bedroom,

and in the conservatory, a luxury
sofa completes the transformation.

Lots of new things happening now,
isn't it, girls?

Definitely big changes.

And all positive ones,
all good ones.

So grateful for what
they have now just given us.
