With high inflation,
the cost of basics

like food and power
are going through the roof.

And it's hitting the poor
a lot harder than the rich.

But is money the key to happiness?

Two families living on opposite ends
of the wealth divide

are about to find out.

Laura and carpenter boyfriend Rob

live in a small, rented
terraced house in Yorkshire.

Laura has battled poor health,
and last year,

was laid off
from her estate agents' job

in a difficult market.

It does really get to me at times.
It makes me feel... like a failure.

Now Laura's on benefits
and struggling to make ends meet.

The benefit that I do receive,

with the rent
and everything else going out,

it does leave me next to nothing.

Just 53 miles away

lives Ferrari-loving
property tycoon William,

who has built a fortune
of over £15 million.

It's somewhere that
I'm very fortunate to have ended up,

and I won't forget that.

Starting out with very little,

Will had to work hard to succeed.

When I was about six or seven,

I was diagnosed with
severe dyslexia.

I've always felt like
I had something to prove.

For one week,
they're swapping homes...

My God.

Not what I expected at all.
..budgets...

That is madness.
..and lives...

Near the town of Malton
in North Yorkshire

is stunning Langton Hall,

home to multi-millionaire
property developer William.

I feel absolutely blessed
to live here, to be honest.

It's something that when I was born
and raised in Bridlington,

I would have never even imagined
for a million years

that I would end up looking back
at that view and thinking,

"That's my house."

As well as acres
of manicured grounds,

there are sports courts
and a huge heated swimming pool -

perfect for exercise-mad Will.

It feels like one
of the ultimate luxuries, really,

to have a swimming pool outdoors
in Yorkshire with that view.

Will's completely
renovated the house,

which was derelict
when he bought it.

Inside, there are 12 lavish bedrooms

and nine bathrooms.

Downstairs, there's a huge kitchen,

five magnificent reception rooms
and a stately dining room.

Will has several staff
he can call on,

including housekeeper Debbie
and private chef Dan.

He knows what he wants,

so it's always a pleasure
to come and cook for William.

Will has built an empire
of over 100 homes.

He's self-made
and fought his way to the top.

When I was about six or seven,

I was diagnosed with
severe dyslexia.

My reading and writing was within
the bottom 2% of the country.

I have always felt like
I had something to prove.

Will works 24/7
on his new-build projects,

and he's keen to prove

he's not a stereotypical developer
and landlord.

I'm not particularly
driven by money.

I'm driven by my desire
to build the best possible houses.

Because in the end,
a good life starts at home.

William will be going on the swap

with his long-time friend,
estate agent Ross.

I don't know if we've really
had a disagreement,

really, in 40 years.

I'd probably say Will is a little
bit more hot-headed than I am.

I'm the bull in a china shop, and...

I'm the brains.

He's very passionate about offering
a good service to his tenants,

to people that
are buying his property.

An overall just good hard-worker.

The property tycoon
is still keen to learn,

and changing places for a week

is the opportunity
he's been looking for.

I hope that perhaps doing the swap

will give me a real insight

into the things
that some people are going through.

In Wakefield, for many years,

Laura's struggled to work
due to having endometriosis,

a painful medical condition

affecting more than
a-million-and-a-half women

in the UK.

Unfortunately,
my health deteriorated,

and I was in a lot of physical pain
on a daily basis.

Partner Rob knows how difficult
life has been.

Laura's had quite a few things
going on in her life,

a lot of adversity to overcome.

That takes a lot of courage,
really does.

But last year,
as her health improved,

she landed a perfect job
with a local estate agency.

Then just as things were looking up,

the property market slumped,
and Laura was made redundant.

She's now on benefits
and £600 in rent arrears.

After everything has gone out,

I have about £50 to £65 a week
left over.

Towards the end of the month,
I'm really struggling,

and then it's a case
of borrowing money,

or take my mobile phone
or laptop to a pawnshop.

But paying that back means that
then knocks on into the next month,

something that's really difficult
to get out of.

Laura wants to build her career
as an estate agent,

but there's one big hurdle.

I've never done my driving lessons.

It's always been a financial reason
behind that.

If I apply for property jobs
and don't have a driving licence,

they will often turn me down.

But Laura isn't giving up
on her dream.

I turned 40 a few months ago.

It's a fresh start,

and I really do want to push forward

and get the career
that I've been waiting for.

Rob is hoping the swap
will be life-changing for Laura.

I want to see her say, "Wow,
so this is what the other side do."

To see her react
to that opportunity,

I think it's just gonna be cool.

That's what I'm looking forward to
the most.

I'm really excited
to find out how other people

have created their success, and
what they've had to do to get there.

The same age as Laura,

William is also taking stock
of his life.

I'm a workaholic.

During the course of my career,
I've made sacrifices,

and I'm doing a little bit of
catching up with that now in my 40s.

And I hope that perhaps
doing the swap for the next week

will teach me a little bit more
about relaxing

and disconnecting with work
when I need to.

It's day one,
and anticipation is building.

Invariably, any time
that you are entering the unknown,

you... you are nervous.

I don't think I'WLl need this
this week, so that can go back away.

So it will be a little bit
of a change...

to the house swap.

It is stressful
not knowing what you're doing.

Could be a city centre
or in the countryside somewhere.

You've no idea.

This is like my perfect,

I feel like there's probably
some good times in this house.

the back of the houses opposite

and collapsed fence panels.

A bit of an overgrown allotment.

Or somebody bouncing up
on a trampoline,

and their head coming over a fence
every now and then. Yeah.

In Wakefield,
the first priority for Will

is shopping for him and Ross
to last the week.

And he's on foot, Laura-style.

Normally, I'd be at the supermarket,

and I'd just grab
the first thing I see,

and I put it straight in the basket,
I wouldn't look at the price.

Will has just £65

to cover everything from food
to travel and entertainment.

So he's hoping to spend
less than half on food and basics.

I'm going to grab a couple
of chopped tinned tomatoes there.

Two for £1.50 seemed like
pretty good value to me.

I'm gonna go for
the long grain rice, 1.19.

A big saving there because
if it was a market leader, £4.50.

And I'm in for £1.19 for a pack
that's the same size.

Supermarkets can be full
of temptation.

So, it looks like a cheese
that would make a perfect salad.

When I first started

and then either selling them

or renting them out to students.

And he was just doing them

He was getting stuck in there,

and it just grew from there,

It gives me all the motivation
to keep going

when you see
what can be achieved with...

You know, if you just believe
in yourself and keep going.

Hearing how William's come from
such a humble background himself,

and how he's really had to start
from nothing and work his way up,

I think that's really inspiring
to hear.

of the vast manicured grounds.

While Laura knuckles down

So, there's quite a lot of work
that's gonna need to go into this,

but, yeah, I'm definitely excited
to get on with it

and learn more
about this side of things.

It's obviously something
that William does quite intensely.

Will's experts will expect
a detailed layout.

If we start from the ground floor,
you then have to decide

how you're gonna utilise this space,
and then measuring it up.

and hallway

Absolutely agree.

In terms of location,
it's going to be young couples,

first-time buyers, probably
going into that first child.

It's really good to see
you've got a hallway. Yeah.

Because, obviously,
when you're coming in,

you want somewhere you can put
your boots, your coats.

The hallway is quite large...

...so what you could
potentially do is

look to bring this doorway
slightly further down. Right.

And it would still be
a very decent space. Yeah.

Moving onto the first floor,

I mean, I think, pretty much here,
it's there or thereabouts.

And I think you want
to be getting as much space

into these bedrooms as possible.

If you think about
in terms of how easy it is to build,

maybe just pulling
this wall out here...

Just taking a portion of that off
and extending the bedroom. Exactly.

And then you've got equal bedrooms.

I employed her for four,
five months last year.

It was a tough year, really,
for a lot of agents,

so if it wasn't for that, yeah,

We know Laura has had her struggles.

I'm wondering
what was she really good at

when she was working
in the business?

I really liked her
sort of proactive approach,

looking for land
for property developers,

see that through until the sale.

Social media,
she was very good at as well.

She's a people person,

she likes to go above and beyond
for renters, for sellers.

And would you happily re-employ her
if the market changed?

Absolutely, yes. Yeah, absolutely.
We keep in touch now and then.

So, yeah, if things picked up,

then, absolutely, 100%,
I'd take her back.

I think the next step for Laura
is to get back into a full-time job,

where she can really get herself
back on her feet financially.

The estate agent that we met today
said that she has the skills

and the tools in the box
to be successful.

Day five, and Will is missing

The difficulty is,
with what I've spent on shopping

and then what I've spent
on a TV licence,

it leaves me with nothing
in the budget.

with no sort of budget

It's been great.

But designer clothes

I'm coming to buy a laptop
so I can use that for work as well.

I had to sort of give that up

with her new laptop,

Laura's still got £600 left
on her budget,

but she has a plan
on how to spend it.

As lovely as it is
going out and buying all this stuff,

I'm gonna use the rest of the budget
that we've got left

to clear that rent
with the landlady.

That is a really sensible thing
to do.

I know it bothers you a lot.

Being able to clear that at least
is a massive worry off my shoulders.

with his garden makeover.

So, obviously, these plants don't

I was left with £65 for the week,

and just this beautiful hydrangea
alone was £45,

so a little bit of a gift
from me to Laura.

William's always 100 miles an hour.

It can be difficult
to keep up with him sometimes.

He's good to work for.

We will keep filling it
until it's full.

I want it to look like
a millionaire's garden.

My confidence level is currently
running at about 65%,

and that's 65% that I'm gonna end up
with something bleeding.

Just a few hours later,
and Laura's garden is transformed.

I think, actually,
what we've created here

is a really tranquil space

that Laura can enjoy
with friends and family,

and another place
that she can actually be proud of.

Living in opulent surroundings

has had a deep impact
on both Laura and Rob,

and it's time to reflect on
what this week has really meant.

We've had the opportunity
to look over the fence

and experience
every single aspect of it.

I think what we need to take
from this is,

if you have a dip in confidence
or something when it comes to work,

or I do, we need
to pull each other up

and remember what can be achieved,
and not give in.

Seriously, thank you so, so much
for doing this for me.

You know how much it meant to me

when I had to cancel
all my birthday plans.

This has absolutely made up for it.
I'm over the moon.

Being surprised with that tonight
has just absolutely blown me away.

And you know the thing that
I'm pleased that we could do,

for your 40th birthday party.

That never went ahead,

so we left it for Will to drink
at the other end.

And yet we've celebrated it

Despite the rain, Will and Ross

I went into it with no expectations
whatsoever,

no sort of preconceptions

of what the week was gonna be,
and it's just been...

an amazing experience
from start to finish, hasn't it?

It's been perfect,
exactly what you need.

Absolutely changed my life.

Obviously, you've been working with
my budget this week, Laura. Yes.

I was absolutely shocked, wasn't 1?7
My eyes were like, "What is this?"

I don't think I've ever had
this much money to hand.

Did you find that it
kind of level led you back

to where you probably wanted to be?

When I was in the early stages
of my career,

while I would always spend
on anything that I needed to

for the business,

I would often have days
when I spent nothing,

and I wanted to re-experience
a little bit of that.

Sometimes, as you become
more successful,

actually, there are luxuries
that you lose... Mm.

...because there's people,
there's questions,

there's jobs to be done.

You do lose some of the space
that you have in your head.

Did you get the chance to see
any of our construction sites?

We went along to the new proposed
development that you've got.

One of my tasks was to do the design
layout and things like that,

and I was really nervous
and really anxious.

But you got
some really good feedback.

Yeah, they were really positive,
actually.

I'd love to just know
a bit more about you.

I did have some health issues.

I feel like I've had to
sort of hide away... Yeah.

...the hardships
that I've gone through

because I've been ashamed to say,
"Look, this is how it is."”

This whole process has been
the biggest, most intense...

sort of letting go of that past.

And... now, at the end of the week,

are you feeling like you are ready

to sort of take on,
you know, the world again?

Yeah.
They say life starts at 40.

That's what I keep saying.
So, do you think...?

40 is a new chapter.

Take that as a first page
of this chapter

and rebuild something new.

It's very obvious
from talking to you

that you're keen
to kick-start your career.

I mean, absolutely.

Since being made redundant
from that last property position,

that is what I've been
trying to achieve.

And my recommendation would be
to try and find the biggest

and most stable estate agent
to work for

so that you can climb
a career ladder.

I very much do want
to be within a company

that can support my growth
and I can see working for long-term.

But I've had jobs offered
and interviews offered,

and as soon as I say I don't drive,

it's, "No, thank you,
we don't want you."

Will's got a plan
to help Laura launch her career.

Going to arrange
a local driving instructor

to come and give you ten lessons

so that you can start
your driving journey.

And hopefully
that will get you established

on your route to your new job.
That's huge.

That will completely change my life.
Yeah.

so that we can do
a little bit of practice,

and help as much as I can.

to be proud of who I am

and push forward
and see what happens.

It's good to be back.

in life

is who you surround yourself with.
